Politico: Obama Is Risen, Truly He Is Risen
Should we be thankful that Politico's Glenn Thrush didn't call this article "How Obama got his groove back"?
Even with the more modest title "How Obama reset his campaign," the piece is one of the greatest works of unintentional (and uncomfortable) comedy since David Brooks got hot and bothered over the crease in the future president's pants, Chris Matthews objectively felt a thrill up his leg at the 2008 Democratic candidate's silky tones, or The New York Times tried to give an inspirational glow to President Obama's tardy and clumsy sellout of longtime U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak.
Some samples:
Obama charged that Romney is a different man than the guy he faced Wednesday. But it was the president who seemed to be a totally different guy on Thursday. Gone was the distracted, deer-in-headlights mumbler. In his place, suddenly, was someone doing a pretty good impersonation of Obama '08…
But it wasn't the joke that struck a top Obama adviser watching from stage right, it was the way the boss was gripping the lectern — left hand grabbing the front, right hand in his pocket.
"Look," the person said, "That's what he does when he's really into it."[…]
If Thursday's Obama performance was any indication, he's more likely to compensate for his shortcomings outside the debate hall — at rallies that fire up a base that had been less than enthusiastic earlier in the year and more recently has been inclined to believe he will trounce Romney…
That night, after a brief, terse chat with his advisers backstage at the University of Denver arena — "He had real clarity about what had happened," one of them told POLITICO with a chuckle — Obama hopped in his limo, "The Beast," and sped off to a nearby DoubleTree with wife Michelle.
He had had enough of politics for the night.
I still expect (because I think an election is pretty much a mechanistic process on which the autumnal theater of polling, stumping and debating has little impact) that Obama will win. But am I the only one who gets a feeling of intense fremdschämen at this kind of inside-the-bunker credulity?
By the way, that "joke" Thrush refers to goes like this: "Thank God somebody is finally getting tough on Big Bird… We didn't know that Big Bird was driving the federal deficit. … Elmo, too?" Even if it were funny, it came more than a day after the debate. It doesn't even qualify as Diderot's esprit d'escalier, the realization that you should have told your jerk store joke after it's too late.
The saddest thing is this description of how the president laid out his bold new game plan:
He huddled with his inner circle — David Axelrod, David Plouffe, Valerie Jarrett, Anita Dunn, Ron Klain and Jim Messina — and settled on the theme they hammered all of Thursday — a direct attack on Romney that accused him of out-and-out lying on his tax-cut claims and portrayed the former Massachusetts governor as a two-faced imposter willing to say anything to win.
First of all, hasn't Anita Dunn been gone from the Obama administration since, like, sometime during the Carter administration? That she's back is almost as ominous as the continued presence of Plouffe, Jarrett and the rest. Obama's problem is not stylistic. It's a disastrous presidency in which all of these knuckleheads are directly implicated. This is a reset?
If you're keeping score at home, here's how the reset is going:
Mitt Romney is now polling within two percent of the president.
Romney has raised $12 million in the last week.
Even Bill Maher said something funny, and it was at Obama's expense.
A potential donor scandal is brewing.
Much of this drama is standard issue for a campaign season, and I'd be surprised if Obama did not come on stronger in the next debate. But if this is his idea of a new look, the president is in worse shape than I realized.

I'm not sure the other debates will matter as much. Both because I doubt the VP debate or the second and third presidential debate will be as viewed, but also because going into the first debate the view most people had of Romney was he one of those Japanese robots that almost seem human, but not quite. Romney came off in the first debate as not only competent to be President, but also somewhat animated about running. For Obama it was the exact opposite. Obama came off as a little kid who's been in way over his head the last four years.
Or like a turtle on a post.
Or like a dog strapped to a car?
Frankly it was the media's fault. They were so busy fellating the president and portraying the challenger as a faltering lightweight, that they didn't stop to realize that: A) Romney has vastly more experience debating and winning campaigns than Obama; and B) Obama is unable to speak coherently without a teleprompter.
Frankly, if it weren't for the chattering chuckleheads in the media shoveling truckloads of bias into every story, Romney would be significantly ahead of Obama.
Media? I blame Jim Lehrer, and of course GWB.
I would argue that being anti-drugs, pro-war, etc. are hallmarks of the Progressive Movement. It's the same movement that produced Prohibition and pushed towards military intervention abroad. "Spreading Democracy" is a Progressive idea.
I am not sure prohibition is progressive.
Wilson vetoed the Volsted act and it was under FDR when the 21st amendment was passed.
A lot of Progressives did support Prohibition
The next one is one of those town hall meeting type debates. Romney will probably perform horribly as he has little charisma with the common man.
And there will be a number of questions by suffering people designed to make Romney squirm. And Obama will do what the dems always do which is wear their heart on their sleeve and "feel the other person's pain"
And the media who are so upset now that Obama did poorly in the first debate will make sure that he does better here and will make sure that EVERYONE knows it and hears it repeatedly.
It is going to be absolutely sickening. That said, I hope Obama wins and destroys the economy on his own so that he and his Keynesian policies get the blame rather than all of Bush's "libertarian" ones.
maybe Romney will ask the suffering "why do you think that taxing your boss more will benefit you? How does the govt taking more of his/her $ help you?"
Every encounter between BO and the common man in the wild (ie, not at a prearranged, prescreened rally/meeting) has gone badly for him. Remember Joe the Plumber?
I've said it before and I will hit you with it again. The president's mojo is like Tinker Bell. If enough journalists believe, it exists. Get to clapping, David Brooks.
Just another politician with a knack for manipulating the press and a talent for setting a narrative.
It will eventually turn bad then turn good again once the 'historians' take over. See the last 40 or so presidents for some precedence.
What the fuck do I know? I'm working on a cheap beer buzz with chasers of stringent liquid and single ice cubes.
That potion you're taking makes you see more than the rest of us. Or possibly less.
Hey man, I got no hockey, what the fuck do you want from me?
I just have so many memories of the early aughts when I had to punch my way out of a million "The Mainstream Media Media lets Bush get away with sooo much because they profit off of the war-MACHINE, man!" conversations that I have no patience for the fucking whining that accompanies discussions of the media by the loser regarding the winners.
History, and alcohol, will redeem me.
History, and alcohol, will redeem me.
?or take your liver.
The liver is the enemy of the person.
Fuck it.
You know it's important, cause it's got the word "live" right in it
Evil spelled backwards.
So we're about to learn from Andrew Sullivan what one hand clapping actually sounds like?
Something akin to patting oneself on the back, I'd imagine.
I think it's the non-clapping hand you'll be hearing.
Possibly with some squishy sounds if he's not a dry guy.
I'm told He can do no wrong

Also, note that the naked student was unarmed. How much could he really have been threatening a bunch of police?
It was just one officer. He WAS right outside of a police station, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything backup-wise.
Before tasers, batons, and mace then pepper spray, there was no escalation of force. If you wanted to fight a cop, it was a gun fight. Some places are still like that.
"I had to shoot him, he had it pointed right at me! I don't know what kind of toxic or dangerous stuff might shoot out of there, especially if he's on bath salts"
Charged the office what?
It should say "officer", I think.
Is it me, or is the vast majority of MSM Obama coverage reading like Tiger Beat puff pieces?
Back in the day, at least Tiger Beat asked Leif Garret if he was using highlights for that unnaturally looking ash blond hair. You can't even expect that much from the MSM.
unnaturally hot looking
Okay, so I took out the word to appear less gay but forgot to correct the rest. Sue me.
They'd have to start asking uncomfortable questions if BO showed up with blond hair one day. Wouldn't they?
OK, maybe they wouldn't.
blonde hair on Obama? It would prove his reptilian lineage.
amirite wakeup?
You inherent the reptilian genealogy from your Caucasian side, so that would be the case.
I like to correct books on conspiracy theories, and that is what a few of them tell me.
One day, not now while I'm plastered though, I'll scan them for some choice quotes. There are some real gems.
Now tell me that is not the face of a lizard in human guise.

I'm not sure that anything can convince me that Bill Maher is a bright person, but he might want to reflect on his joke and come to the realization that no matter how much money a campaigner is able to raise, if they are not persuasive, then they won't receive votes.
That would impinge on the arrogance of those that believe the american people are sheep destined to be convinced by the shiniest object and that they are above such influence. Not that I don't think they're half right.
I'm Steve Jobs and I approve this message.
"Gone was the distracted, deer-in-headlights mumbler. In his place, suddenly, was someone doing a pretty good impersonation of Obama '08?"
Yeah, Obama in '08 didn't have the record of Obama in '12. He had the luxury of simply not being W.
Now, for the first time, he has a record. And if that record doesn't cause embarrassment, I'm not sure what could.
I didn't think Obama was so hot to trot in '08. The cult mystified me then. They were looking, yearning for a demigod who would deliver them from Boooosh, and overlooked the purple prose, the merely serviceable at best delivery, the dingbat promises. They needed to believe, and damn if the human mind wont compensate to make up the difference.
Killazontherun| 10.6.12 @ 10:50PM |#
"I didn't think Obama was so hot to trot in '08...."
Obama wasn't elected as Obama; he was elected as 'not W'.
In office, he's proved himself to the continuation of W, which is not surprising. He was cast into a position for which he had no skills, and therefore he's followed what he was given.
He was also running against an incompetent old man who willfully ignored every opportunity to criticize Obama.
I'm tellin' y'all, the Democratic Party--with all its minions in the media--has been transformed into a personality cult around Obama.
They don't stand for any issues anymore--except Obama. Obama is their only issue, and you're either with them or against them.
If Obama trips and falls on his face on the way into the next debate, they'll make like it was supposed to be that way.
They don't care about anything anymore except Obama. They don't care if what Obama does is wrong--so long as Obama's the one doing it...
They don't care if Obama screws up--he can't screw up. It's like in the Life of Brian--every mistake Obama makes is elevated to the status of scripture. Screw up in the first debate? Of course! That was the plan all along! Pure genius?
Bursting the bubbles of the people that live and work in this Obama personality cult is reason enough by itself to vote for Romney.
And so-called liberals said the same thing about GeeDub in 2003 in the lead up to Operation War Boner, so what?
An anecdote:
The day after the debate, which I didn't watch, I went online to the major media outlets sites to see how much felating they'd do and they pretty much said that Romney won handily and that the president performed poorly. Guess that was the part of some long game I keep hearing about.
Bursting the bubbles of the people that live and work in this Obama personality cult is reason enough by itself to vote for Romney.
Yeah, whatever man. You do that.
I ain't gonna defend George W. Bush--one of the reasons I despise Obama is because he continued so many of the awful programs of George W. Bush.
One of the reasons we're having such a hard time getting rid of Obama is that Obama doesn't seem that bad when measured against Bush...
Having said that, there were dyed in the wool Republican pundits who were critical of George W. Bush. Very critical.
Meanwhile, I saw gay people pound the table for Obama recently--back when he was against gay marriage. I'm tellin' ya, they don't care about the issues! They just care about Obama.
That isn't like a personality cult. That is a personality cult...especially when it's media driven:
"A cult of personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized, heroic, and, at times god-like public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_cult
Bush never had it like every mistake he made was transformed into a personal triumph by the media.
Those people we saw in North Korea after the last Dear Leader died? They were weeping by the thousands like their own children just died? I think they really mean it. I think that's what they're really feeling. And I think Obama's followers are like that, too. Maybe not to the same extreme, but they identify with Obama's personal travails as if any attack on him is an attack on them personally.
It's disgusting.
It's like you were born in 2008.
How so?
Because you seem to accept, unquestionably, the narrative being put forth by republicans.
A narrative that is intentionally ignorant of history.
Have some goddamn perspective man. The Obama presidency is criticized by some, and put on a pedestal by others; just like any other presidency.
Oh wait, I forgot this is totally the same as N.Korea. Jesus.
I didn't say it was totally the same as North Korea.
I said North Korea does it to much more of an extreme.
But qualitatively? Yeah. It's the same shit!
Look at what Cavanaugh's linked to up there.
See it?
See Cavanaugh's headline?
"Politico: Obama Is Risen, Truly He Is Risen"
That's funny 'cause it's a true representation.
That's funny 'cause it's a true representation.
Again: Among whom?
Personally, half the liberals I know fucking hate Obama and half think he's the goddamn second coming; but all will vote for him 'cause they're team players. The same could be said about my conservative acquaintances vis a vis Mr. Romney. Like I said, competing anecdotes. Also, the things that make us angry and irritated usually stand out more than those that don't.
There are a few things that regardless of politics of the speaker really burn my ass: Ignorance of (recent)history, mindless partisanship, generalizations, and bitching that the media isn't fair. Every election brings out these things in spades. That, in addition to my acute drunkenness, has made me a bit salty. Don't take my insulting style personally, Ken. I always read your posts and respect your opinion.
That would explain your reluctance to consider amputation as a punishment for quartz thievery. Perhaps you'll be more open-minded in the morning.
I think that every quartz thief should have to spend 5 hours cleaning Mary Stack's bathroom, which is a much more horrific fate.
What she loses by pre-defecating on the bathmat she makes up for by not having very high standards for cleanliness.
I think a large section of people in media really do worship Obama.
The Libya thing is a prime example. Not only would the media not let Bush get away with the kind of shit he is pulling but i don't think they would have let any previous democrat get away with it either.
Seriously we have a murdered ambassador and the Obama administration is full on lying about it. Pretty big whoppers at that and MSM is just ignoring it.
All the weird pant leg tickles and bowing and the articles like the one Tim links to sure is easier to explain if there is a circle of Obama personality cultists within the MSM elite.
Yeah, I don't think there would be much of a difference between Romney and Obama, but there is a definite cult for Obama. If the press were saying "he's done a lot that's crap, but he's still the lesser of two evils", I could understand that. They're not - they're in full denial mode, and anyone who even questions the Pres is obviously racist.
And I think Obama's followers are like that, too. Maybe not to the same extreme...
The sad thing is that it wouldn't take all that long for them to reach that extreme.
"The day after the debate, which I didn't watch, I went online to the major media outlets sites to see how much felating they'd do and they pretty much said that Romney won handily and that the president performed poorly. Guess that was the part of some long game I keep hearing about."
Isn't that the exception that proves the rule?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.....s_the_rule
And look how quickly they're back to work!
Isn't the fact that the pundits are getting back to the hadith writing what Cavanaugh's post up yonder is all about?
That's not what "the exception that proves the rule" means. An example of the exception that proves the rule is a sign that says, "No parking on Sunday". The exception (no parking on Sunday) proves the rule that parking is allowed Monday through Saturday.
If you say, "All swans are white," and later encounter a black swan, that exception does not prove the rule that "All swans are white".
I used it exactly the way it's supposed to be used.
"I went online to the major media outlets sites to see how much felating they'd do and they pretty much said that Romney won handily and that the president performed poorly."
He went online expecting to see the general rule--but what he saw was the exception...
If this one instance is the exception, then the rule is that the media treats Obama like a religious figure.
If he recognizes himself that he saw an exception to the rule, then there must be a rule.
If he recognizes himself that he saw an exception to the rule, then there must be a rule.
The exception you cite only exists in his perception. So the rule it proves likewise exists only in his perception.
Going back to the time Cicero used the [removed]and my Latin is pretty good), that's the point.
If you're arguing that no rule exists--then you shouldn't argue that there's an exception to it.
He went to go see the rule applied--but he found an exception. That doesn't mean the rule doesn't exist! The fact that he recognized it was an exception implies that there's a rule.
"[removed]"
I have no idea where that came from or why.
But are the god damn squirrels are censoring my posts in real time?
"Going back to the time Cicero used the [expression the first time](and my Latin is pretty good), that's the point.", was what it was supposed to say.
He went to go see the rule applied--but he found an exception. That doesn't mean the rule doesn't exist!
Actually, it DOES mean the rule he was looking for doesn't exist. There may be a weaker rule that still exists, which does not contradict the found exception. Even that weaker rule is not proven to exist by the exception; it is merely not ruled out.
They don't stand for any issues anymore--except Obama. Obama is their only issue, and you're either with them or against them.
I don't think this is really the case in general. It only appears that way because he has to win next month to keep the gravy train going for the people who are really in control while he's out playing golf.
They were all over him in 2010 when he suggested not having the public option as part of OC and repealing the Bush tax cuts.
I'd like to see somebody do a test, where they're given a list of positions people usually associate with being Republican issues--but in the test, they're pinned on Obama... And I'd like to see how many Democrats would stand behind Obama anyway.
Ask them if Obama turned back against gay marriage again, would you still vote for him?
If he wanted to put up a wall on the border and make the penalties on illegal aliens much harsher, would you still vote for him?
All the way down the list.
I don't think Democrats care about those issues anywhere near as much as they care about supporting Obama. It just isn't about the issues.
I bet they'd keep supporting him for much longer than the average Republican would support Romney on the same test, if Romney were supporting things that are traditionally considered Democratic issues.
I bet they'd keep supporting him for much longer than the average Republican would support Romney on the same test, if Romney were supporting things that are traditionally considered Democratic issues.
Yeah, republicans would never support Romney if they found out that he had not only supported socialized medicine in the state he was governor of, but signed anti-second amendment legislation. They're way to issue conscious and immune to crowd psychology.
I wonder ken, are you accidentally or inherently myopic?
I wonder ken, are you accidentally or inherently myopic?
Are you accidentally or inherently illiterate?
I didn't say Republicans wouldn't support Romney despite not being 100%.
I wrote, "I bet [the Democrats] keep supporting [Obama] for much longer than the average Republican would support Romney...
I'd point out that Romney promised to repeal ObamaCare, etc., but what's the point of that? How much support would Romney lose if he came out as pro-life or in favor of banning handguns? I bet he'd lose a lot!
I don't think it's like that with Obama. When I see Republican gun nuts pounding the table for some Republican that's in favor of gun control the way I saw those gay guys pounding the table for Obama--despite Obama being against gay marriage at the time? I'll totally reconsider.
We are on the verge of arguing competing anecdotes. I have been inundated by gun nutz for Romney, as I spend a lot of time around firearm enthusiasts. And Romney is in favor of gun control.
I didn't say Republicans wouldn't support Romney despite not being 100%
No, I guess not. You said they wouldn't support him "much longer" than Obama. Which means nary a thing after he's voted for.
We are on the verge of arguing competing anecdotes.
Okay, one last anecdote and then I'm done...
Have you ever argued an issue with Tony?
Do you think Tony cares about issues?
How many issues do you think Obama would have to change his mind on before Tony changed his mind about supporting Obama?
Tony doesn't give a shit about issues.
If Obama changed his mind tomorrow and suddenly agreed with Mitt Romney on everything--or even went to the right of Romney? I don't think his support for Obama would change one bit.
And I don't think that's unusual for Democrats, especially those who call themselves Progressives.
P.S. How many marginal Democrats are breaking for the Greens right now--compared to how many marginal Republicans are breaking for the Libertarians? Last poll I saw, Libertarians were pulling twice as many votes as the Greens. Maybe that's because the Greens are competing with a sitting president, but maybe there's more to it than that, too.
And Romney is in favor of gun control.
Doesn't matter. This isn't '88 where George H Bush could get away with mild support for gun control laws. If Romney even batted an eye moving in that direction in the form of suggested legislation, he would find himself out on his ass impeached on a technicality. If you doubt that, you do not know the gun rights movement of 2012.
If Romney even batted an eye moving in that direction in the form of suggested legislation, he would find himself out on his ass impeached on a technicality. If you doubt that, you do not know the gun rights movement of 2012.
Believe it when I see it.
And you are not seeing it outside of a ten year old clip in a Massachusetts debate because Romney has learned to keep his fucking mouth shut as a good little poodle of us gun rightest will. Even Obama knows to keep that shit locked up tight, and only only confront us through subversive means that backfired on him. Tell me, after the media push during the Dark Knight screening massacre, have you noticed a few correspondents missing?
We're taking over. The numbers are astounding if you took the time to break them down. You would know where its going.
Gun Control will know the True Death
We're gonna take over DC.
We're gonna take over Philadelphia.
We're gonna take over NYC.
And we're coming for Chicago.
Goddamned, I am sick to death of libertarians who only know how to play defense, or worse, bench heckler.
Can you please come for California after that?
GBN is buying into the Team Orange false equivalence.
There is a personality cult surrounding Obama, the likes of which I've never seen for a living US politician. My parents used to tell me that FDR had a personality cult and i never really believed it because it was so far outside of how I've seen politicians treated here. So yeah maybe FDR was treated with the same worshipping deference, but no other politician has been.
It's laughable that you think Bush was treated the same as Obama. Maybe you've forgetten the open contempt the press corps showed him, the faux anti-war protests that were really anti-Bush protests etc.
How about Clinton? Oh yeah the guy that was impeached and spent the last 3 years in office fending off Lewinski jokes and attacks.
What about HW Bush - Nope he was ridiculed as a bumbling idiot during his whole administration and dry roasted for "doing the right thing" and signing off on a tax increase.
Oh but the sainted Reagan, he was worshipped right? Nope, ridiculed as doddering old fool by the press for 8 years. The no talent hack Sam Donaldson made a career off of being rude to and insulting to Reagan. And the republicans were constantly attacking him for being to far right or not far right enough.
But hey, keep telling yourself that they're all the same if that's what it takes for you to justify (to yourself) voting for Gary Jonhson.
You're correct in that GWB didn't have close to the aura that BO does, but the media was basically in his lap from 9/11 until things really started going south in Iraq in 2004. They mocked the antiwar movement at the beginning of the wars. The media has always loved the Great Man doing Great Things narrative, left or right.
I was anti war in 2002 before it was cool and yes the media did a shameful job in that regards. But, it was nowhere near as in the tank for Bush as it is for Obama and that time frame was following the biggest attack on American soil in at least sixty years, with an understandable corresponding surge in nationalism.
It's nothing like the political environment that Obama has had.
Fun fact: I was pro-Iraq-war in 2002 (also too young to vote). Reason won me over to the antiwar side in 06.
Extra fun fact for Auric Demonocles: the Iraq war enjoyed 75% approval from the American people at the time. It took years of mostly batshit crazy propaganda from the blindly loyal team blue types to swing even a plurality of their own base against the Iraq war. Check that... the "Bush Lied" argument just provided a slogan. The only thing that really turned the tide on the opinions of the people regarding the war was "war fatigue". Bush warned us that it was going to be a long haul and the American people resoundingly said, "we're with you, we won't forget and we won't stop supporting you!" In an ironic twist, it was actually the American people that lied to Bush about the war...
Strange that nobody outside the Libertarian camp and maybe - maybe - a few old-school lefties hanging out with Nader and Kucinich bothered to make the straight-up "killing people is bad, m'kay" anti-war argument. Michael Moore and his minions are convinced that the Iraq war is bad because "Bush Lied", and because "no blood for oil". I suppose that explains why they can now be unashamedly pro-war for Obama, since Obama clearly didn't lie.
Your comment is nothing more than an opinion filled diatribe which is supported by little more than your own perception of reality.
One unsupported assertion after another. I freely admit that what I argue is based upon anecdotal evidence, but you would rather we take your statements as coming down from up upon high, truth without verification. And guess what asshole, I hear the same, "Whaaa, the press is sooo unfair! *sob*" tripe from liberal idiots too, so at least your not alone in your whining.
But hey, keep telling yourself that they're all the same if that's what it takes for you to justify (to yourself) voting for Gary Jonhson.
As for this, go fuck yourself. Really. Truly. Sit on a fucking rusty screwdriver. I don't need to justify how I vote, or not vote, to anyone. Least of all you.
Besides, I hope Romney wins just so I don't have to hear four years of revving the conservative whine machine kicked into high gear. "LEAVE MITT ALONE" *sob*
Ah fuck it, they'll whine anyways. Boo fucking hoo.
Your belligerence says that my response hit a chord.
And for the record, I'm planning on voting for Gary Johnson too, but I'm under not delusion that Obama and Romney are the same or even equally bad.
How can being in favor of nationalizing GM be the same as opposing the nationalization of GM?
How can being in favor of the $800 billion stimulus be the same as opposing the $800 billion stimulus?
Obama championed the stimulus and nationalized GM. Romney opposed them both.
They're just not the same.
The problem with this is that I don't believe Romney actually means anything he says. Of course he can afford to speak against government intervention when he's not at the helm. But what if he were?
Maybe Romney does have some principles and would have said "No, we are letting GM go down, because government shouldn't interfere with business!". Or maybe Romney is *gasp* a politician, and thus can be greased by the right hands into being "sensible and serious", because "sometimes there are exceptions to the free market rule", bailing out Big Auto and passing stimulus packages of course being a couple of them.
That's realpolitik. Very few Republicans are defending those decisions or claiming he was playing 3-D chess or whatever. They just see him as better than the alternative.
It's not comparable to the Obama defense reflex the left is displaying right now.
That's realpolitik.
Oh, okay.
You do realize what realpolitik implies, right?
Yes, it's saying that Romney might not be great but he's better than the alternative. And that we'll keep pressure on him to do the things that we want.
Contrast that to the average anti-war protesting Obama voter from 07 that now argues how great it is that Obama killed OBL and what a great president he is. Oh and that it's totally ok that Obamacare is based on an individual mandate when Obama specifically ran against one.
Oh and that we totally need to not take the 1st amendment so seriously now that the right men are in charge.
Oh and that crony capitalism is a-ok as long as Obama's directing it.
Oh and that the Bush tax cuts are horrible and should be repealed, except for the 90% of them the Obama wants to keep.
Ken is right, Obamunism is a cult of personality and his acolytes will support any policy flip flop that he makes.
Ken is right about The O cult (get it!?!).
That was a medium quality joke.
The Blue ?bama Cult?
They love his career of evil
If the debate performance did nothing else, it punctured the "Emperor Barack the Perfect" balloon. (Goddamn, his slavish devotees must be out of breath trying to keep that one inflated!)

Yeah, defense!!!!!!!!!!
The Buckeyes have showed up tonight!
O-H...
Florida beat LSU, Arkansas beat Auburn, and South Carolina is beating Georgia.
It's a good day for college football.
Can't you stick that shit under a fucking dunphy post? Jesus.
I hate how colleges name their teams after the useless troglodytes that populate their states. Like that is going to keep normal people from realizing that they're backwardsass sister fuckers. "Hey, look America we're self-aware, and self-deprecating!" Just fucking die already, honky.
Christ I'm a misanthrope.
Maybe I spoke too soon. 0 first downs on three possessions and shitty special teams coverage.
SHIT!!!!!!!!!
Oh ye of little faith!
At the 'shoe last night - loudest I've heard it in 40+ years of going to games.
I blame myself for the slow start. I had a Buckeyes t-shirt on when they went up 7-0, but I inexplicably put on my Corny Green (#7) road jersey and Nebraska went up 17-7. I realized the error of my ways and took the jersey back off and everything was fine.

Skyfall theme by Adele.
Not The best Bond theme nor is it the worst.
What's your fav? I've always liked A View To A Kill
Oops, read below for my response.
My favorite is For Your Eyes Only. One of my favorite Bond movies for that matter. Moore was just...cool in that.
Best theme was the very first: Dr. No.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5jjYLsh1V4
The second best is a toss up between You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger.

No
The best is this:

Why is that stupid bunny hop Sean Connery does before he fires his gun?
And looking at the smoke I think he shot the sound guy off to the left.
Reason #1 GoldenEye is my favorite Bond flick: The Tina Turner/Bono/Edge theme song that replaced the crappy theme song Ace of Base was going to provide.
Now, the game GoldenEye is definitely the best of the bond games. shit ton of fun.
Still the game I think of when I think of "why I enjoy video games". Even though my cousin used to kick my ass in it without a contest until Perfect Dark came out.
It's shit.
That song finally atones for Duran Duran.
Like every Bond theme, it's shit.
Just about everything from that overproduced Etta James wannabe is garbage.
John F. Kennedy head went to the back and to the left, indicating a shot fired from the front and to the right of the presidential motorcade.
This can only mean that the Warren Report's findings are false, and Lee Harvey Oswald was not the only shooter in Dealy Plaza on November 22, 1963.

I listen to NPR while I get ready in the morning before I go to work. On Friday they were playing clips of a speech BHO gave at a rally the day after the debates. BHO told a joke and laughed at it. The crowd just lit up and guffawed. Before BHO continued, there was a lull, and he chuckled again. Immediately the crowd burst into laughter.
There are some days I think I should have achieved more than I have thus far in life. But I'll always take solace in the fact that I'm not and never will be someone like those folks in the audience--shameless bootlickers of the presential personality cult.
Re: DanD,
Reminds me of that Star Trek: The Next Generation episode where Data, in his relentless quest to be more human, tries his luck with standup comedy in front of a Holodeck-created audience that laughed at anything he did - something which, in contrast with the self-adoring president, disappointed Data.
I wish this comment was on reddit so I could upvote.
Maybe they were laughing AT him.
And remember friends, Brooks is considered the "conservative half" of NPRs iternerant liberal minstrels, Brooks providing balance to E.J. Dionne's firebrand liberalism. Or something.
And really? The most liberal president of his lifetime? I have no idea how old Mr. Brooks is but Obama isn't the most liberal president of my lifetime, and I put myself around the same age as Tim "Are These They" Cavinaugh.
I would put Carter as the most liberal president of my lifetime, with George W. Bush coming in a close second. Obama gets a nod for a few "progressive" policies such as his damn-the-torpedos-spend-moar approach to governing. Aside from that, he's anti-drug, pro-war, apologetic of our first amendment-- that creepy old uncle that embarasses us... I dare not go on.
But let's see what he does with this second four years now that he doesn't fear re-election. Unless he wants to protect the legacy for Biden's 2016 run. Who knows. Anything can happen, right?
It's like these people are channelling crazy dead people.
And yes, I typo'd your name, Cavanaugh. Just to give you the shakes.
Brooks was born during the Kennedy administration. So not even close to being the most liberal.
Carter wasn't that liberal either. Airline and trucking deregulation anyone?
Depends on what you mean by liberal.
Personally, I'd say that Obama is the most socialist fascist president of my lifetime, I was too young to remember Johnson, with Nixon a close 2nd.
Lemme essplain something to you... people like Obama have never had enough politics. Ever.

Most read words in the press this week: Romney wins on style, Obama wins on substance.
Funny cause I have no idea what the "substance" of Obama's side was.
I can't recall him saying much of anything except talking about how Romehy wants to cut $5 trillion in taxes.
Does anyone remember anything substantive Obama said on Wednesday?

I just heard an Obamney(the half black version) ad on the way home this evening and it went something like this:
When Romney was governor in MA, he denied women health care and they died in the streets by the millions.
Romney has promised that on his very first day in office, he will deny all women health care and they will die in the streets by the hundred of millions.
Women need to be very afraid of Mitt Romney, and if they value their life for even one more day, they will vote for the only candidate that truly cares for women, Barack Obama.
Seriously, I am exaggerating a little, very little. That was actually the message that the ad conveyed.
"Mom, can I borrow $18,000 to help pay for my birth control?"
What the fuck is wrong with people. They're really gonna shit when there's a real-deal slash and burn libertarian type running for prez.
The parasites that cried wolf, as it were.
The Rethuglicans may be less than stellar, ok, they suck. But the Dems are totally wihout shame, and have become the lowest form of life on the planet. No wonder they think that some endangered tree frog is more valuable than people. If they were the only people, it would be true.
Here is a pretty accurate article on the big O, IMO:
The Imaginary Man
Good article. That is how I feel about our president.
I remember when the Wright/Ayers shit hit the fan and everyone was freakin' out. Me, I couldn't imagine a shamelessly ambitious and self-centered individual as Obama ever being of a revolutionary disposition. Hell, if he were that much of an ideologue I could at least respect that as an adherent to "fringe" movement even though I didn't agree with him.
I think that Obama is nothing more than a mistake of history and our times. A tabula rasa that the left can canonize and the right can demonize, but there's nothing there except and empty suit. Dust and nothing more.
The Rethuglicans may be less than stellar, ok, they suck. But the Dems are totally wihout shame, and have become the lowest form of life on the planet.
I have recently been tossing about the thought that the Democrats really are "centrists" politically, and I in no way mean that as a compliment. They take the worst bits from the right (warmongering, war on drugs, immigration, 4th amendment, "it's for the children" to name but a few) and the worst bits from the left (no concept of limited govt, socialism, social engineering, 2nd amendment, 5th amendment). It's like a perfect storm of anti-liberty policies.
I totally hate the term moderate
What does that mean? It means someone who is a total big gorverment statist hack without any morals or shame.
But it's so respectable! Everyone can agree with Moderate, except for TeaBagging Eliminationist degenerates that require elimination.
That number continues to amaze me. If we're talking The Pill, assuming 20 years of suppressed fertility, that's $72/month. If we're talking condoms or some other barrier method, at $5 a pop we're talking near-Wilt-Chamberlain levels of copulation.
And we are all so assuming that mommy is responsible for the entire life cycle of her dauqhters whoredom.
Here's a radical concept. If you are able to have sex, then you are also old enough to get a fucking job and pay for your own birth control.
also, not all so. Geez, am I drunk already?
Makes sense. A daughter who would send that e-card must have a mother who didn't spend enough on birth control for herself.
Yeah, there is this side of me that wants to pay for all birth control and abortions for all proglodytes and their parasite voting base so that they don't fucking breed. Hell, just sterilize them all at birth and save the human race.
+1
Remember, this is the guy who won on "substance"
God I hate these people with a passion that words fail to describe...
Yes, because Romney only won because he lied so much. Even though not one person who has uttered or copied and pasted that ridiculous line, can point out what he lied about. Including our own beloved Tony.
And how could anyone beat the great O on style? He is a God isn't he and everyone else mere mortals?
He lied cause he said Obama "almost doubled" the deficit instead of Obama's pledge to half it! Even though by the most generous reading to Obama, he cut it down by 8% (starting with $700 billion of one time spending), and starting with the spending that actually occurred once he took office, it's up at least 50%. But of course Obama isn't at fault for any of the spending bills that passed while he was President and he signed... cause Bush?
That number continues to amaze me. If we're talking The Pill, assuming 20 years of suppressed fertility, that's $72/month. If we're talking condoms or some other barrier method, at $5 a pop we're talking near-Wilt-Chamberlain levels of copulation.
I just checked Amazon.com, and you can get 100 Crown condoms for $16.95. $18000 will buy you 7 condoms a day for 40 years (and actually, 2 days a week you can use 8).
Or if ypu run the numbers differently, just $200 per abortion.
Condoms aren't green.
Some are not only green but glowing, too. (Well, those are not the cheapest sort.)
They are showing the undiscounted cost of 30 years of HRT.
"Mom, can I borrow $18,000 to help pay for my birth control?"
That's a whole lotta fucking.
Clearly all these women need it for medical reasons, and not to avoid having babies!
Spitzer didn't even pay that much, did he?

NBC is confusing the MLS match with a real soccer game.
One in a country where people riot because they're out of other people's money?
But it wasn't the joke that struck a top Obama adviser watching from stage right, it was the way the boss was gripping the lectern ? left hand grabbing the front, right hand in his pocket.
"Look," the person said, "That's what he does when he's really into it."
You'd think they'd want to be WAAY quieter about Obama touching himself in public like that.
Texas down by 3 with a turnover close to their own goal? You bet it's Gus Johnson time.
I still expect (because I think an election is pretty much a mechanistic process on which the autumnal theater of polling, stumping and debating has little impact) that Obama will win.
You've obviously never personally run for office, Tim, or you'd stay well away from such insanely ignorant statements like this.
I was actually pretty damn convinced that Obama was going to win, until the debate. I am not so sure now. That was one hell of an ass whooping and I don't care what anyone says, coming back from such a brutal beating as that is not likely.
For some reason the daily poll reports have vanished from the MSM.
They are still up on RCP though. That is probably about the most accurate polls that you will see, judging by the 2010 elections, they were pretty close on most races with the RCP average. It looks like Romney considerably closed the gap.
That being said, I can't imagine someone not knowing by now who they are going to vote for. Look at the candidates, look at their positions on the issues(their current rhetoric anyway), and their voting records. It is scary, I think that about 50% of voters, or more, couldn't even tell you why they are voting for who they are. Well, I just like him better than that other guy, durrr.
If 'your' candidate turns into a buffoon at the end of the campaign you are less likely to actually go out and vote for him. Doesn't mean you changed your mind to support the other guy.
I'm still not positive who I'm voting for. I'm either voting for Johnson (issues) or Romney (schadenfreude). I still haven't decided exactly how much I hate liberals for Obamacare, though I know it's a fucking shitload.
it's easy to live in WA. i can vote for johnson because god knows romney has no chance of winning here.
on the + side, i get to vote for legalization of mj, and if it passes it will be like BEING PART OF HISTORY , MAN!!!!!!!
i am trying not to get too stoked about MJ legalization because the polling isn't that great, but it would be fucking AWESOME if it passes
Just vote for Johnson because it's the right thing to do, right, Dumphy? Because really, you want to be a Libertarian or you wouldn't be hanging around here even though getting verbally abused by some of our posters because you represent authority.
So vote for GJ, Mmmkay? And stop shooting puppies and tazing granny.
are you going down the troll highway, too dood?
whatever. sad.
i don't WANT to be a libertarian. i am one, like most people, because my underlying visions necessitate it be so. at least for me, it spreads from these underlying beliefs. it's not a matter of choice or what one wants as to BELIEFS, only as to recommended policy.
are you going down the troll highway, too dood?
No, dood, I am not a troll. I was just fucking with you a little. It was totally in jest. Your sarcasm radar is broken, but that's ok. H and R is not a place for the easily offended, as you well know. Also, the distrust of authority here is very high as you should also well know, and understand. You can't just expect folks here to accept that you are what you say when they daily see the atrocities committed by authority.
my bad. appopologies. i'm so used to seeing it, i assumed i was seeing it again.
cheers
The likelihood of my vote affecting the outcome has no bearing on my vote.
You'll hate yourself even more than that if you vote Romney and Romney wins and he does what Romneybots do: expand government in a 'moderate' bipartisan way. And Romney will still probably lose so that's a wasted vote. I'd stick with Joho.
I don't think you're fully comprehending how badly I want to piss off Obamatrons. It's possible that regardless of how much Romney sucks, voting for him will be worth it for me just to enjoy their angry when I say I did.
I have been 100% positive that I am voting for Johnson since RP quit the race.
I hate one of the supreme court justices way more than any liberals for Obamacare. And I have already had my insurance rate doubled to subsidize lower income employees because of the shit.
And if I could vote for Supreme Court justices, Roberts would forever get a vote against from me.
there's not a single justice who passes for me.
scalia totally lost me on raich. don't even get me started on bong hits for jesus (apparently, the constitution doesn't apply to minors), etc.
oh yEA. and kelo
way too much deference to state authoritah, a commerce clause on steroids, the drugs exception to the 4th, the domestic violence exception to the 2nd, 4th and a few others, etc.
meh
You guys are totally blowing the OC decision out of proportion. It was a Hail Mary pass to try to get it struck down... and things could have gone a lot worse. As it stands, the mandate wasn't struck down by itself (which would have caused an insurance industry death spiral and an embrace of socialized medicine), and no precedent was set for inactivity being subject to the commerce clause.
Oh, and two of the leftist justices, Ginsburg and Breyer, voted for the bad side in Kelo and Raich, which were much more destructive decisions.
They rewrote a law so they could keep it passed. And they couldn't have struck down the mandate by itself. No severability, the whole thing goes. Also, no precedent was set for inactivity NOT being subject to the commerce clause, because Roberts topic on that was just dicta since he didn't have the balls to actually vote for it to be unconstitutional.
I'm not blowing this out of proportion. You are downplaying the fact that the federal government, supposedly with enumerated powers, thinks it can force you to buy health insurance while also limiting what health insurance plans can exist.
They also believe that they can confiscate 13% of every dollar earned in America and hand it over to old people; that they can steal money and goods from their rightful owners because the goods might have been in the vicinity of something that may or may not be illegal; that they can invade foreign nations without declarations of war; that they can dictate the chemicals that you possess and the plants that you grow; that they can deprive you of your freedom for filming pretty girls giving each other milk enimas; that although they couldn't set up a national bank, they can set up a national health insurance company and confiscate your money to subsidize old people's use of that health insurance; that they can confiscate your money and hand it over to farmers to not grow crops, to auto manufacturers to spend as they see fit, to banks, to energy companies, and on and on...
And we didn't even have to break into new stuff like warrantless wiretaps, assassinations of American citizens, mandating that private companies become spies for the government, banning hunting rifles with cool plastic stocks and heat shields, requiring that you and I register with the government if we want to speak out together to promote our favored candidate in the next election (or making it illegal for a candidate to coordinate his campaign with like-minded groups), requiring that the bathroom stall in your local tennis club be wheelchair accessible, etc. to infinity...
I was convinced he was going to win until the debacle in the Middle East. Now I really know he's going to win.
the debacle in the Middle East.
You mean 9/11 Libya?
In particular, yes. In general... all of it.
Same. But do debates really matter? Obama still up 2 points.
Typically maybe no, but that was an ass whooping of apocalyptic proportions, so maybe yes. And I think that the O is shell shocked now and desperate. He is looking for answers and at the same time looking for a dark corner to hide in. It could get much worse for him.
I certainly hope Romney starts unloading the big guns already.
How so?

what's the beliefs as to the likelihood of legalized MJ passing in any/all/some of the states it is coming up for vote. as a WA resident, i'd love to say i'm confident we are going to pass it, but the polls aren't filling me with a lot of love. are either of the other states looking like a sure thing? is the scenario where all state legalization initiatives fail, the most likely one?
I sure as hell hope that it passes in at least one of the states, becaue that will be the catalyst that will finally get it legalized, after lots of ugly action by the feds.
My prediction is that it passes in Colorado and is narrowly defeated in the other states. The Obamney admin will quickly file a lawsuit against CO and send in thier jackboot DEA thugs in a series of raids in the state.
BTW, none of us posters here on Reason have ever smoked or would advocate the smoking off illegal cannabis. Is that cool?
thx. somebody else told me they thought colorado had the best chance. maybe you guys know what you are talking about. I'm not sure how the feds will handle it and of course will it OBAMA-feds or ROMNEY-feds? my (weak prediction) is that the feds would be pretty cirumspect about balls to the walls assnuttery, but they've surprised me before (horiuchi, you listening?).
I think it's good that some advocacy people have smoked, and that some haven't. Both sets bring different "cred" to the legalization table. I just think the face of legalization on the whole should "look like america", not like a kevin smith movie.
lastly, i haven't smoked (which as a surfer from UCSB is almost unheard of ...), but all the other guys in my band did, TONS of cops i work with have, etc. - iow, i don't think it says anything about anybody whether they have smoked mj. but i would think nothing wrong with advocating the smoking of even illegal cannabis, since it's ridiculous that it's illegal, and in most jurisdictions, the penalty is a joke- literallly.
will it OBAMA-feds or ROMNEY-feds?
Won't matter, both will have the same policies and therefore same reaction.
And yes, it is ridiculous that it is illegal, and yet it is.
I think Romney said that he'd leave it to the states...just like Obama did (for medical). I have to wonder if Romney would want to bother. Rand Paul would be all in his face, and he'll have enough other problems.
My sense is that team Romney/Ryan are as much or even more pro-WOD than team Obama. Funny that, Team Obama, when one member of the team is literally brain dead. But anyway, I don't think Romney will be any worse or any better than Obama on the WOD when push comes to shove.
i am going to say that my prediction is that romney feds would be better on respecting state autonomah vis a vis medical mj (or almost anything else) than obama feds. the latter have shown zero respect for even the concept of state autonomy.
succinctly - put romney fedbots would be better than obama fedbots- totally wild assed speculative opinion on my part
I agree with you on this one Dunphy.
The republicans in practice have been more deferential to the states than the democrats, which coincides with the general smaller government and states rights positions of the national republican party.
Not that they go far enough imo, but that they at least pay lip service to the concepts and can be shamed into doing the right thing. In contrast to the dems that are increasingly becoming nanny statists and completely repudiate small government and state differentiation ideals.
Ultimately though, Romeny is a wild card on this issue and also on the war issue, in that he hasn't expressed a strong opinion on either. I'm hoping that he will be more libertarian on both, which fits with both his mormon and business background, but ultimately there is not way to know.
Wild card? Guy's a devout Mormon and he's already said he strongly opposes ending prohibition. There's video of him telling a person with cerebral palsy they should be arrested for using marijuana.
Maybe he'll have a Nixon goes to China moment.
Probably not, but there's a better chance with him than there is with Obama.
Guy's a devout Mormon and he's already said he strongly opposes ending prohibition.
So? Ron Paul opposes abortion and gay marriage but wouldn't force states to comply with his personal wishes. Why can't MR do the same?
There's video of him telling a person with cerebral palsy they should be arrested for using marijuana.
If you're talking about the video of the guy in a wheelchair who goes around asking politicians whether they'll allow him to get medical MJ, you're a liar. Romney just walked away and didn't answer his question.
Obviously not the best response, but not what you're claiming.
yes , i saw that video too. romney personally is a complete mr mackey. drugs r bad, mkay, and doesn't even drink alcohol as a mormon
however, that video is not as Greg83 portrayed it; i've seen it too tulpa.
again, i stand by the proposition that romney imo would be more likely to defer to state authoritah than obama. also, we already KNOW obama doesn't even consider the idea valid. romney AT LEAST is a wild card compared to a "known known" to get all rumsfeld and shit
Didn't Romney say he would "fight medical marijuana tooth and nail"?
The Republicans don't want to defer to the states on gay marriage or any other cultural issue, why would they on this one?
My prediction is that it passes in Colorado and is narrowly defeated in the other states. The Obamney admin will quickly file a lawsuit against CO
On what possible grounds?
During prohibition there were a number of states where alcohol was legal even though there were federal laws prohibiting it.
That's a pretty obvious parallel.
My reasoning, VG, is that Colorado is more libertarian than the other states in question, and just gut feeling. The other states are more modern day liberal, which does not translate into much of anything that you could call pro-liberty. Look what happened in Cali, the great bastion of liberalism? No, the great bastion of progessivism.
We will see, but I say that the best chance of legalization is in CO, by far.
I believe VG's question was "on what possible grounds will the lawsuit be brought?"
On the grounds that federal law trumps state law, of course. Am I wrong?
But dual sovereignty says that the federal and state laws exist independently of each other. With federal laws taking precedence in some cases of conflict.
The states would effectively become nothing more than administrative districts if the federal government can overturn any state law that they want.
On the grounds that federal law trumps state law, of course. Am I wrong?
Except for a few cases related to the 14th and 15th amendments, which are not relevant here, the feds cannot force states to outlaw things, and cannot demand that state law enforcement enforce federal laws.
I've actually never smoked weed or cigarettes (I have smoke 3 cigars) and get annoyed by people who do . I still think it should be legal.
ditto (except for the cigars thang)
Fifty-eight percent of respondents said they support I-502, the ballot referendum to license and regulate marijuana use in the state, while just 21 percent said they oppose it. Another 21 percent said they were undecided.

Yes, yes, it's the first time a rich dude with a rich father ever came close to being President.
Not to mention that I'm pretty sure Ross Perot was "real billionaire."
The proper, democrat, path to wealth is becoming rich after you've been elected, no before.
First of all, hasn't Anita Dunn been gone from the Obama administration since, like, sometime during the Carter administration? That she's back is almost as ominous as the continued presence of Plouffe, Jarrett and the rest.

those guys look like they are having a lot of fun. Wow.

The reaction from the Democratic side seems a bit bizarre to me. Obama's still ahead in the polls, and he was doing just fine with his previous tsrategy. He doesn't have to change anything, shake anything up, or do a reset of anything. His strategy was working. The reaction to the debate is going totally overboard, and honestly, the Democrats are feeding the perception that he did badly by buying into it. This is the first time I think I've seem them reacting in an irrational way.
Either the debate has comepletly unnerved them, or they are playing some kind of reverse-psychology spin game. Maybe they're trying to spin Obama as some sort of debate underdog so people won't expect him to win next time.
They were expecting a cakewalk, sort of like Bush in Iraq and Afghanistan was. They thought Romney was a laughable opponent, a clumsy robot who would get knocked out of the ring by their far smarter and far more articulate leader.
But they forgot that robots can be reprogrammed.
