Obama Spokesman Concedes Libya Attack Was Terrorism, Obama Not So Much

|

At least he made the trains run on time.

After more than a week of improbable claims, the Obama Administration now characterizes the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. embassy in Libya as a terrorist act. But President Obama himself cautioned that protests against the unseen film Innocence of Muslims are "natural."

"It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," White House spokesman Jay Carney told Reuters. "Our embassy was attacked violently and the result was four deaths of American officials. So, again, that's self-evident."

From the Los Angeles Times

The new evaluation came as congressional committees met in closed session to press Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, along with top intelligence and law enforcement officials, on whether the diplomatic outpost was adequately protected by a force of mostly Libyan guards.

Libyan officials allowed FBI investigators to visit the burned-out compound only early this week, officials said, a delay that could hamper the team in gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Carney…said some of the heavily armed men who stormed the consulate in Benghazi and killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans "may have had connections" to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an offshoot of the terrorist network that is active in eastern Libya.

Elsewhere around the world, a pan-Islamic "Day of Love" was marked by violence, arson, and flag burnings:

* In Pakistan rioters burned down movie theaters and at least three people have been killed.

* In Sri Lanka, protesters burned Obama in effigy.

* In Indonesia, the U.S. embassy has been closed and an imprisoned terrorist told Indonesians they should imitate the Libya attack. "We should hold our anger if we're being insulted," Abu Bakar Bashir said. "We should forgive. But if the one that was defamed is Allah, the Prophet or his Shariah, death is the punishment. The Prophet is much more precious than our souls."

* In Malaysia, protesters burned American flags outside the U.S. embassy.

The president, meanwhile, seems to be stepping back from Carney's characterization. From the L.A. Times again:

Asked later about the Libya attack during a town hall meeting in Coral Gables, Fla., President Obama appeared to fall back on the administration's earlier description of the assault — that it was sparked by anger over an amateur film, made in California and posted on the Internet, that ridiculed the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

"I don't want to speak to something until we have all the information," Obama said. "The natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests."

In his comments to Reuters, Carney maintained the administration's claim that there is no evidence the Libya attack was premeditated, a claim that seems to contradict eyewitness accounts, intelligence estimates, and warnings from Chris Stevens, the American ambassador who was killed in the Libya attack.

  1. “…The Prophet is much more precious than our souls.”

The guy sounds just like an Obama supporter AMIRITE GUYS?

    1. He sounds like a cultist.

      So yes.

  2. Come on! It had to have been the movie! The alternative is to suggest that perhaps actions by this administration could have pissed off these people, and that is simply not a possibility! He’s got a Nobel Peace Prize for fuck’s sake! He’s made the oceans recede! He’s created jobs! He’s turned around the economy! How could anyone not love him! Racist! Bigot! Hater!

    1. It obviously wasn’t planned…except for Secretary Clinton is now forming an Accountability Board* to determine how the attack slipped our notice.

      Huh.

      * Whitewash Committee

      1. The report will conclusively state that Eric Holder had nothing to do with anything.

        1. And that he didn’t know jack shit about it.

        2. Clearly this whole kerfuffle was the fault of the Bush administration.

          1. How many times did Obama say “previous administration”?

        3. Minor minions will be sacrificed, briefcases full of cash will be given.

    2. I have this one Obamaphant I argue with who ALWAYS starts his argument with “he’s improved American standing throughout the world”. They really, truly believe that the world likes us more now that it’s a Democrat killing their brothers and sisters.

Long captain obvious short: Partisans are partisany.

  3. “It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told Reuters. “Our embassy was attacked violently and the result was four deaths of American officials. So, again, that’s self-evident.”

So self-evident it only took you a week to notice.

    1. Give the poor guy a break, he’s got a hell of a lot to do, like looking into Romney’s tax returns.

  4. What is the administration saying? That this is justifiable terrorism? So our response will be nonlethal drone attacks? What do they mean?

    1. If at all possible they mean nothing. If you communicate an intent, then you might be held to your statement. Politicians are in the business of not being held accountable for anything last time I checked.

      1. Was Carter’s administration this inept? I was young then, but I can’t recall it being this full of incompetence. And he had the Soviet Union to deal with.

        1. Carter had a bipolar foreign policy. He was constantly switching between Brezinski and Vance and couldn’t commit to one course of action.

        2. This is much worse than Carter. Carter at least in the last year of his term started to get it. His first two years were liberal fantasy land. Then he got waxed in the midterms and changed course. Most of the defense cuts were reversed. The Reagan defense build up started under Carter. Carter also did his deregulation in the last two years of his term.

As bad as Carter was, he was personally an honest man and he was at least smart enough not to double down on retard. Obama is neither honest or smart enough to stop doing stupid things. If anything he seems to get dumber as his administration goes on. If he wins re-election by 2014, Biden will be considered the smart one.

          1. It seems likely to me that BO isn’t really in control of this administration anymore. He just wants to jet around and play president for a few more years and not have to be bothered with details of governance.

Who’s really in control? Maybe some of his toxic “advisors”. Maybe no one… maybe the WH staff has carved out little fiefdoms.

            1. It is probably the latter. A second Obama term is going to be chaos. I don’t think for a moment that Obama was ever consulted about the work waivers for welfare. I would bet money that Sebilius and the polticals at HHS did it on their own. At this point there seems to be little if any oversight of the executive from the White House.

              1. Say what you will about Romney, but you know he couldn’t resist the urge to micromanage the executive branch, with his background in private sector management.

While you may not like everything he does, at least you’d know who was in charge. (and I guarantee you would like whatever BO’s underlings are doing even less)

            2. Golf baby!
I wonder if he is trying to play as many of the Top 100 golf courses in the US before his presidential clout evaporates and he is banished to Kashyyk.

            3. Valerie Jarrett.

            4. Federal government’s a big thing. I don’t really think that any President can really be in control of everything. Make appointments, trust those people. Make decisions, but you have to trust the advisors to send correct data.

Perhaps if the President had less to Execute, he would be more in charge.

              1. True John. But some are better than others. You have to have a really crack White House staff who understands the executive and you have to have political people at the agencies who are deeply loyal. It is hard, but it can be done just not by these can’t even lie straight clowns.

              2. One of the reasons Obama needs to go is the exceedingly poor quality of his cabinet and other appointees.

              3. The point is, Mr Thacker, that he doesn’t seem to even be attempting to control what’s going on. I agree that he can’t have control of every little thing the executive branch is doing in real time, but he can at least try to keep abreast of what’s going on.

Anyone who’s been in management or been in charge of the tiniest ice cream shop in the private sector knows that you don’t just wait to be informed of a problem, you keep tabs on as much stuff as possible so you’ll know very soon after a problem occurs. These fellows seem to not want to find out so they can avoid responsibility. And if we the American people allow them to continue in office, we bear responsibility too.

        3. Barack Obama: Dumber than Carter; Dirtier than Nixon!

          1. To directly answer ProLib, Barack Obama has proven to be far more incompetent at both domestic and foreign policy than Carter.

Carter was a nuclear engineer and tried to “solve” a complex humanities problem. The results were mixed at best. So Carter governed much stupider than Carter actually was.

Barack has proven himself to be completely in over his head. He is governing stupidly, because he is stupid.

            1. Funny, wasn’t Hoover an engineer too? He certainly had progressive tendencies – just not the ‘bold experimentation’ attitude.

That phrase, bold experimentation, where have a heard it before…very recently, too…

      2. If at all possible they mean nothing. If you communicate an intent, then you might be held to your statement.

        This too.

    2. “They” don’t know what the hell they’re doing, that’s the best explanation here.

If they had the testicular fortitude to just admit “we don’t know what happened just yet, but we are aggressively investigating” and “the perpetrators will be brought to justice”, I would have respected that.

Instead, they instantly blamed…an obscure YouTube video.

    3. It means that whatever happened wasn’t their fault.

The administration can be likened to a fighter pilot who has fucked up royally, and is in the sights of an enemy fighter, and out of altitude and airspeed.

They are jinking wildly, with no long term plan or strategy, thinking no more than 2 seconds ahead to how they are going to dodge the next burst of cannon fire, hoping that some miracle will intervene before a turbine is shattered by a shell burst.

      1. ….and they’re winning, so far.

        1. Winning what?

          1. Nothing. There’s just too much WTF going on these days for people to reelect this buffoon. Not just in the administration’s random walk of a foreign policy, but the sleepwalking economy that they’re doing nothing to improve. Quite the opposite, in fact.

            1. I dunno, it could be quite entertaining to watch another four years of this no-talent assclown. Romney isn’t going to turn anything around or meaningfully change anything so shouldn’t we at least be entertained for the next four years?

              1. Oh, we’re well and fucked. But Romney might kill us slower. Maybe. Probably not, but I’m pretty sure Obama will fuck things up worse.

                1. I am just in it for Obamatron tears at this point.

                  1. There won’t be any tears from the Obamatrons, only rage at
                    A) A stolen election,
                    B) Stupidity of the American People,
                    C) Why doesn’t anyone understand their betters,
                    D) Maybe the kind of fascism the first Progressives loved so much isn’t such a bad idea…

                    1. There won’t be any tears from the Obamatrons

Dude, yes there will. I have way too much emotionally invested in that River of Tears, and my thirst will be satisfied one way or another.

                    2. Randian, Restoras,

You are both right. There will be tears and rage. It will be one giant temper fit. What is interesting is that even if Obama wins, there were not be much celebrating. I get the feeling from some of the liberals I know that deep down they are pretty embarrassed about Obama. They can barely admit that too themselves and would never admit it publicly. Basically all they have left at this point is “but the Republicans..” Even winning the election is going to be pretty grim for them. Even if Obama wins, what has he won? He won’t have Congress. He will have no coattails or a mandate to do much of anything beyond not fuck up.

I can’t think of a single thing he actually plans to do in a second term.

                    3. What a great moderator question: “President Obama, what are your plans for a second term?”

I guarantee it wouldn’t be anything concrete, just more bluster about fixing the economy and cars in ditches and healing the planet.

                    4. Well he can’t tell you his big “plans” until we know what the matchups are in the next 4 NCAA tournaments.

                    5. “I can’t think of a single thing he actually plans to do in a second term.”

Recall he plans to lighten up on Russia.

                    6. I can’t think of a single thing he actually plans to do in a second term.

Well…more golf!…and…well let’s see, he won’t be able to campaign anymore and that’s all he seems to know how to do…ummm…shoring up his legacy?

                    7. “Basically all they have left at this point is “but the Republicans.”

Correct. I live in Liberal Land and that is the response I usually get. Not many people I know really defend him anymore – they just sputter something about Bush or about Romney outsourcing jobs or something.
Nevertheless, they will all still vote for him because they want their free shit, and he will win.

              2. I can see the logic of that Restoras. Even the great Presidents had disappointing second terms. But when a bad President gets a second term it is usually epic LUTZ. FDR’s second term was such a disaster liberal historians refuse to even talk about it. And we all know how it worked out for Nixon and Bush.

Obama is worse than any of them. He is more incompetent and even less able to learn from his mistakes.

                1. Yes John. It’ll be like being a Yankee fan watching the Red Sox epic collapse last September. Except this time I own’t be screaming at my television, just laughing as I store more gold and ammo.

                  1. Actually, as a libertarian, it’ll be more like being an Oriole fan watching the Red Sox epic collapse, or perhaps watching the Yankees epic collapse up 3-0 on the Red Sox.

Sure, we didn’t win, and we’re not sure we really like the ones who did, but at least one of those teams lost in painful fashion.

                    1. O’s certainly put together a nice season. Imagine a Nat’s/O’s WS? Be kinda cool.

                    2. Cool but almost completely unwatched nationally.

                    3. Absolutely right, Randian, but that’s too bad for everyone else. Not every WS should feature a ‘big market’ team every year.

                2. But when a bad President gets a second term it is usually epic LUTZ.

Perhaps he should run on that prospect.

                  Obama 2012
                  For the lulz!

                3. Clinton’s second term was actually better than his first (neglecting the BBBJ fiasco).

                  1. Yes, but he had a GOP Congress to contend with, and, for that matter, that was a GOP dominated with reform folks for a year or two.

I think the GOP will take back control of both houses this time, but I don’t think there’s any congressional revolution occurring, either.

      2. They are jinking wildly, with no long term plan or strategy, thinking no more than 2 seconds ahead to how they are going to dodge the next burst of cannon fire, hoping that some miracle will intervene before a turbine is shattered by a shell burst.

Does the media run interference for fight pilots in trouble?

    4. That this is justifiable terrorism?

Seems to me that is exactly what they are saying.

      1. So they’re freedom fighters? No, that can’t be right. Anti-freedom fighters?

  5. Question: does the Obama administration bungle their PR worse when it’s for successes or when it’s for failures?

They unquestioningly bungle every PR message.

    1. But Obama cares

      1. I see what you did there…

    2. They didn’t bungle it. They lied, got the story out and then later admitted the truth after people stopped paying attention. You run the lie on page one for three days and then run the correction just below the word jumble.

      1. I think the bungling comes in the way they pushed for the youtube explanation. They were arrogant and dismissive to the point that some mainstream media would have no choice but to call them out on it when corrections were issued.

      2. Telling such a blatant and obvious lie that it becomes a source of derision even in the mainstream media – that is a bungle.

        1. Is it really a source for derision in the mainstream media? Just asking. If it is, it will be the first time the media has ever held them up for derision.

          1. Maybe it’s just me laughing at the media and Obama’s bullshit.

            1. They are all still still blaming the video for this, so Obama was successful.

  6. In Pakistan, that guy was shot looting up a movie theater…

But from what I can tell, Pakistan declared a holiday in order to encourage people to riot. Just at the US embassy, or the KFC, not the movie theater.

I’m so sick of this shit, these protests are not ‘natural’. When will we wake up to the fact goatfarmers are playing us like a fiddle.

  7. “It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack,”

If it is so self evident, why did you claim otherwise for nearly a week? You lying sack of shit.

    1. Exactly. Even from a strategic standpoint this makes no sense. If you’re looking to shape narrative because the actual damaging details will eventually be revealed and you want to establish a story… why do the one thing that will guarantee the most embarrassment? They knew these details would eventually come out yet they decided to make statements the press couldn’t possibly ignore when they walked them back.

      1. They are banking on the short attention span and stupidity of the American people. All they care about is the first story. Since the media never holds them accountable for lying, all they have to do is lie. You can always walk back later after people stop paying attention.

        1. Since the media never holds them accountable for lying, all they have to do is lie

          1. above shoud also include:

Isn’t it really more this than anything eslse?

            Frakkin’ skwerlz….

  8. So is BO going to fire Jay Carney for misrepresenting his postion?

    1. Firing someone would be admitting fault, so I think that answers the question.

  9. Obama’s continued bungling of this situation boggles the mind. He really seems not to give a shit about: 1) freedom of speech and 2) American lives.

    1. Nope, not in the mood for that shit today.

    2. If, as the police claim, the only DNA on the condom is the dad’s on the inside, and the girl’s on the outside, then that guy is a vile shitbag who deserves to die in the boats.

    3. don’t read that. really.

      1. LISTEN TO THIS MAN HOLY SHIT

        1. There are very few times when it’s a benefit to be dead inside. Reading that article is one of them.

          1. Well said sir. Or madam.

    4. Thanks Mullatto. That is the worst thing I have ever seen.

      1. I really want to travel to Michigan and kill him with my own hands.

        FUCK!

        1. I am a former criminal defense attorney. I get the whole due process thing. But I can’t say I would have been too upset if the cops had just shot him trying to escape.

    5. People suck.

    6. I just hovered over the link without clicking, and its already the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

      1. Same here. Don’t need to get the details on that. Ugh.

        1. Just reading the URL gave me the shivers.

  10. OT: new Menomena album is awesome:

    http://thesilvertongueonline.c…..ou-buy-it/

    1. What kind of music?

      1. What kind of music?

        From the link:

Menomena tradition of packing unshakable pop melodies in the middle of dynamic songs characterized by sharp, twisting turns.

    2. I am still listening to the new Rush album quite frequently…have I mentioned that it is teh Awezum???

  11. Elsewhere around the world, a pan-Islamic “Day of Love” was marked by violence, arson, and flag burnings

Brought to you by the irony department of the religion of peace.

    1. Daddy Mo only hits you because he loves you, BP.

    2. Did it say what they Love? If it was Love of violence, burning and mayhem, then +10 for the day!

  12. “In Sri Lanka, protesters burned Obama in effigy.”
Not the world healer! They must have thought it was someone else, like one of the Koch brothers.

    1. Re: Lisa,

      Not the world healer!

Worse – they burned the effigy of the Nobel Peace prize winner!

      Oh, those backward savages!

  13. What’s with the picture of Jeff Ross that says, “Miss me yet?” Did Comedy Central cancel The Burn?

    1. reasonistas are big fans of DWTS and they were pissed at his elimination.

  14. Remember, if we hadn’t elected a tall, handsome, half-black, Nobel Peace Prize winner for president, the Muslim would be aflame at this point.

    1. If we adopt the Dean strategy for embassy security (MOAR FLAMETHROWERS!), then we may just see Muslims aflame.

Although I doubt it. The weekly checks and training exercises will probably guarantee nobody comes over our embassy walls ever again.

      1. Flamethrowers vs. The Libyan Humungus Brigade? I think we’ve all seen that movie.

      2. Or you could appoint a panel to study it. A panel of angry, sex-starved Valkyries.

    2. Don’t get me started on the Buddhist burners again.

  15. * In Pakistan rioters burned down movie theaters and at least three people have been killed.

It would’ve made more sense if they had burned internet cafes and computers… But I guess frustration knows no irony.

  16. In Sri Lanka, protesters burned Obama in effigy

    In Russia, effigies burn protestors!

  17. So I guess pleading ignorance is Obama’s new schtick. “National debt? Gosh, I just can’t remember what it is right now. Was Libya a terrorist attack? Well, I don’t know much about it, maybe ask me later? Fast and Furious? Hey, I don’t keep track of everything the DOJ is doing, you know. My guy in charge didn’t know anything either. What can I say, sometimes stuff just happens.”

  18. Pakistan explodes in protest; 17 killed…

Applying Reality Debased Community Logic: if not for those bold commercials showing in Pakistan where Obama and Clinton let the Muslims know that it wasn’t the administration that was responsible for the video but the evil culture of America that the administration scorns and is trying its best to reform more to the Islamist liking there would have been 1500 deaths instead of a mere 15.

    1. Really makes sense when u think about it, lol.

    2. Why not? That’s always their argument when it comes to the economy.

    3. “Lives Created and/or Saved”

  19. I love that the same Secretary of Cunt that denounces the video that supposedly caused all of this, has attended the Book of Mormon play that mocks Mormons.
Not that I care about mocking Mormons, but the fact that no one in the media is even calling her on this is infuriating.

  20. Is that picture of Q’daffy from before or after his death?

‘Cause, seriously, he looks about two weeks embalmed. And with a mail-order embalming kit, at that.

  21. * In Malaysia, protesters burned American flags outside the U.S. embassy.

    Take that “improved international image”.

  22. Many thanks for just one more great article.it attract me like the sterling silver necklaces.Wherever otherwise could any individual have that form of details with this a best approach along with words and phrases? I’ve got a demonstration future full week, and I’m for your appear with regard to this sort of details.

  23. That this is justifiable terrorism?

  24. What is the administration saying? That this is justifiable terrorism? So our response will be nonlethal drone attacks? What do they mean?
