Ministers should end national pay bargaining and public sector workers should negotiate their salaries individually, some of Britain's most senior economists warn today.

In an open letter, the academics say national pay bargaining is worsening public services and making it harder for the private sector to recruit workers in many areas. The situation is threatening to exacerbate differences between regions and undermining the economic recovery.
