Study: Politicians and Psychopaths Aren't So Different
Are the politicians going crazy? Or are the crazy going political? Over at The Atlantic, James Silver postulates that certain political figures share traits with (or may even be) psychopaths:
Psychopathy is a psychological condition based on well-established diagnostic criteria, which include lack of remorse and empathy, a sense of grandiosity, superficial charm, conning and manipulative behavior, and refusal to take responsibility for one's actions, among others.
Sounds familiar. Silver also points out that though there's a good amount of variation along the psychopathic spectrum, core features like the egocentric behavior, the shallow charm, and apparent lack of guilt are there throughout. In other words, behavior that elected officials have in spades:
Presumably, no one would dispute the notion that Hitler and Stalin were psychopaths at the extreme end of the spectrum: completely unconstrained by empathy or guilt and willing to say or do anything to accomplish their goals. This, though, reinforces the perception of psychopaths as out-of-control madmen who are evil to the core. Might there be other, more mainstream political leaders who have psychopathic traits but fall closer to the "normal" range? Some have certainly thought so.
In 2003, neuropsychologist Paul Brok argued that Prime Minister Tony Blair was a "plausible psychopath" who was ruthlessly ambitious, egocentric, and manipulative. Respected psychologist and researcher David Lykken has written, "If we can believe his biographer, Robert Caro […] Lyndon Johnson exemplified this syndrome. He was relatively fearless, shameless, abusive of his wife and underlings, and willing to do or say almost anything required to attain his ends."

Sounds familiar.
Sounds like the police.
Minus the superficial charm, sure.
Policemen in general are classified more as sadists than as psychopaths. However, I would like to point out that there is no bright, clear line there.
Unlike many of you, I am not a 'police hater'. I used to work for a police department and know tons of first-rate guys who are cops. On the other hand, I used to work for a police department and know tons of super-pieces-of-shit who are cops. The piece-of-shit to normal ratio is much higher in PDs than in any other population I know of...save prisons.
I don't have a hate-on for cops either, dunphy included.
But... the last time I talked to a cop was while I working for a city to program to their water distribution. That's what I do for living. A cop with nothing else to do comes up to me and starts telling me what to do - how to write my programs, what language I should use, and what hardware should be purchased. He had a Mac and a wireless router at home which he proudly maintained himself. Yup, a wellspring of information.
Prisons. Ugh. I used to live near Corcoran State Prison, and the culture of the prison guards was downright abnormal. I did some work for this lady who used to be a guard, and she said she had to leave the area for fear of her life. From the other guards.
I'm sorry for you that you lived anywhere in the region near Corcoran. Prison or no, we can never drive through there fast enough. I am sure the prison was put there because of the area's uncanny resemblance to hell.
do positions of power naturally draw psychopaths? And/or do such positions foster psychopathic behavior?
Absolutely. Look at the police.
This is no revelation. The worst kind of people are drawn to positions that can be abused. Obviously. Why wouldn't they gravitate towards what they want?
This is no revelation.
Another dog-licks-balls story. yawn.
The worst kind of people are drawn to positions that can be abused. Obviously. Why wouldn't they gravitate towards what they want?
This is exactly why every animal shelter in the PNW has a picture of Episiarch reading "Do NOT Hire!"

So Obama then.
I think it has a lot to do with the copss' self image. As we saw with the contrasting recruitment videos a couple of weeks ago, you can recruit public servants or you can recruit stormtroopers.
My experience in training a good number of police is that they are more frustrated bullies than psycho paths.
Well, golly. That makes me feel all kinds of better then.
I didn't say it was better just different.
I'll choose "and" for $100, Alex.
do positions of power naturally draw psychopaths?
I would say definitely yes. Especially in politics, government service, and law enforcement, positions that provide for very little accountability.
And/or do such positions foster psychopathic behavior?
If you're asking if they cause psychopathic behavior, my guess would be no. But that's not to say that when someone new to law enforcement realizes the extent of his new powers and just how much he can get away with, he won't go full retard . . .
that lack of accountability is a key factor. The criminal psychopath would consciously or subconsciously know/realize that getting caught is the inevitable outcome. Politicians know that the dead boy/live girl scenario is the only real career killer and, even then, it does not guarantee that one is finished (see: Kennedy, E.).
The criminal psychopath would consciously or subconsciously know/realize that getting caught is the inevitable outcome.
Inevitable? People are so absorbed in their own bubbles they rarely notice what occurs outside of them. You can get away with anything so long as you don't rub it in their noses where they have to respond.
for the criminal, of course, it's inevitable. How will anyone know of their brilliance and superiority if they remain at large? Psychopath seems to come with a big ego, which would actually be one more thing in common with politicians.
A true sociopath is too contemptuous of people to care what they think.
I think sociopaths and psychopaths are different.
TEAM SOCIO v TEAM PSYCHO - its on!
I think sociopaths and psychopaths are different.
I found this:
http://www.diffen.com/differen....._Sociopath
In his survey of serial killers FBI Behavioral Psychologist Douglas found that they all tried to become cops or join the military and generally were not accepted or washed out of training.
That was a mistake on the psychopaths' parts - uniformed service is hierarchical and requires submission at the entry level. This culture would not suit a true psychopath, who would see him or herself as superior to his or her superiors. That's not to say some wouldn't make it and reach the higher echelons.
Politics would be a much better choice than police or military.
"do positions of power naturally draw psychopaths? And/or do such positions foster psychopathic behavior?"
Yes.
what about positions of absolute power???
And didn't Hayek explain this like 80 years ago in TRTS? "Why the Worst Get on Top" was the chapter, IIRC.
Yes, to both.
The psychopath is drawn to the position becase it affords him official cover for engaging in his baser desires. The position fosters psychopathy by removing many of the fears of punishment for such actions, as well as setting up a mentality that the one holding the position of power is different from and somehow better than those he is in power over.
The two traits that almost all serial killers share is late-stage bedwetting and torture/killing of small animals at a young age.
I know not all psychopaths are serial killers, but I'd really like to learn how many politicians killed pets and wet the bed in junior high.
but I'd really like to learn how many politicians killed pets and wet the bed in junior high.
Trust me, if the media could find this out, you would know. Anything, anything, to avoid substance.
Granted, killing pets probably swerves over to the substantive column.
Does leaving dogs on the top of station wagons count?
I don't get the big deal in that story. Dog is shitting on everything in the car, he's going on the kennel on the top.
Yeah. I hate to be put in the situation of defending Romney, but the things people choose to attack him with are just dumb. It's not as if they just strapped the dog to the roof. Also, Jews do do better economically than Arabs (well the ones without oil) in part because of their culture, it is good to be able to fire people when you run a company and London wasn't too well prepared for the Olympics.
Dog is shitting on everything in the car, he's going on the kennel on the top.
If he's lucky.
What about casually bragging about eating dogs in a fictional autobiography?
But he is foreign and exotic, so you can't expect him to have the same American cultural out look that you do.
But he is foreign and exotic
Birther!!!!
Mine is merely a plea for tolerance of those who are different, and foreign 😉
In Obama's defense, he never would have allowed that attack on Romney if he had read his own autobiography.
Does it have to be pets? Would you count things like frogs, tadpoles, grasshoppers, etc?
Loved to burn ants as a kid, and I still can't stand insects and spiders. Never even liked to hunt. Always missed on purpose when dad took me out. However, I have killed snakes and a German Shepard that I pulled off of a kid at a bus stop, and then strangled with its collar. I didn't trust the owner to keep it inside so I solved the problem on the spot.
You killed a German shepherd? Fuck you, cunt.
I'd be more concerned for the snakes.
Curse the owner. He taught it to be beneath the worth of life, not me.
I can't count the number of fish I have killed and eaten in my life (and I'm a terrible fisherperson!). So ya know, watch out - I'm totally Jeffrey Dahmer reincarnated. Or something.
Oh, and I've cut of the heads of some chickens. That's so gross though, I now leave it to my sister to raise and kill all the fowl. She thinks it's hilarious and fun to cut off their heads and watch them bounce around headless.
I saw that (chicken with head cut off) once when I was a kid. It didn't traumatize me at the time, but now that I'm all grown up it really bothers me when I remember it. This is why I'd have problems being a farmer or a hunter - the only things I don't have problems killing are fish.
Get certified to SCUBA. Spend some time in the water with them....you will probably stop murdering fish. They arent much different from other animals.
I went snorkeling in the Bahamas. Once. I hated it. I'm thoroughly convinced I don't belong in a natural body of water. So I'll continue to stand on the shore and murder fish, thank you very much!
Dad skinning a deer is still a powerful image in my head. His people were hunters and trappers (though his dad was a mariachi), and he was incredible with a bow. I never took to it.
Once I dug a small pool of the side of the pond in my backyard. I caught some tadpoles and threw them in then poured half a bottle of ammonia in. I came back the next day to find a bunch of dead, white tadpoles. Then there was blowing up frogs with firecrackers. And torching grasshoppers with hair spray flamethrowers. Did you know they turn red like lobsters when you cook them?
I did not know that.
I wonder if sociopaths and psychopaths complete one another and make for good friends.
"Did you know they turn red like lobsters when you cook them?"
I did...
I don't think insects count. Frogs might be borderline.
They purposefully used a bad photo of Bachmann because of cocktail parties Orange line!!!
Be careful, JJ. SIV might accuse you of being...actually, I don't even know what he accuses people of, because he makes no sense. In any case, JJ, you better watch out!
Well for a man who named himself after the simian immunodeficiency virus, he sure does think highly of himself.
Oh look! I have an obsessive stalker.
Now say something about "TEAMS" and C+P some It's Always Sunny... and Futurama quotes.
That's totally out of line. Why just yesterday, he quoted Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
Star Trek TOS* quotes are usually relevant to the discussion.
*I include the film as it is a sequel to an episode.
In the far-flung future, TOS and American history will merge. Our first president will be remembered as President Kirk. The first man to beam to the Moon is Neil "Scotty" Armstrong. And so on.
TOS didn't even accurately predict the Eugenics Wars. The 1990s. Please.
What, you missed that? What do you do, live under a rock?
Sure, I'm genetically enhanced. But I sure didn't find anyone worth battling for supremacy.
Well, we won really quickly.
I'm not sure you can call this "winning".
Actually, that's one of the better photos of Bachmann, in a corn dog, Who's Nailin' Pailn? kinda way.
Also the preview button isn't working for me. Just gives me a blank white page with my handle in hyperlink : (
Works fine for me. I can tell because I hit it by mistake every time I try to post a comment.
Alt text fail
Alt text fail
I kinda liked it.
Every once in a while, a pic is so incredibly awesome that it stands on its own even without the alt-text.
You are history's greatest monster.
He's probably just doing what he was told.
I agree - he should become a politician!
Great, does this mean I have to worry about becoming a politician now?
Also:
elected officials have in spades
RACIST!
Also, also:
neuropsychologist Paul Brok
Has he gone on a killing spree yet? Because that's when you know you've finally made it.
They keep distracting us with nonsense about "easy access to guns" and "violent media imagery" yet in so many of these acts of violence the common denominator is neuroscience.
No, you see, the common element isn't neuroscience, it's medical school: http://www.popehat.com/2012/07.....l-schools/
If there is one thing more rigorous and trustworthy than psychological diagnoses, it's psychological diagnoses of people you've never met filtered through the media and history.
Psychology: The Un-Science.
Then there's economics.
"In your guts you know he's nuts"
sounds like a book title.
I was just thinking the same thing. I mean, as much as politicians-as-psychopaths totally confirms my worldview (and I think the article as a whole makes some interesting, if rather general, points), the Tony Blair diagnosis seems pretty weak.
Psychopaths are neither mad nor crazy. My particular pet peeve is when psychotic and psychopath are used interchangeably (and it happens with some frequency).
Andrzej ?obaczewski's "Political Ponerology: A Science of Evil Applied for Political Purposes" has a lot to say about psychopaths and how they influence politics.
It annoys me too.
"Oh, he's a psychopath. He must have an uncontrollable urge to KILL!"
I don't like politicians, so I'm tempted to blindly agree, but I have to admit the psych industry has made bank expanding diagnosis criteria to the point where every twitch and outburst is a potential pathology, so the comparison is probably not all that pertinent. Amusing, though.
No shit.
I'll go get my "surprised" face, if I can remember where I left it.
Maybe that's what I used to make that one coffee table stop wobbling.
I think Michelle Bachmann is using it.
That photo creeps me out more than Loughner's.
NEEDZ MOAR LARRY FLYNT
Power doesn't breed psychopaths and narcissists, but it does draw them. At the one end of the spectrum, you have men like Stalin. At the other you have Cinncinatus and George Washington. Unfortunately, our system is set up to reward narcissists and psychopaths for being narcissists and psychopaths. Take Michael Bloomberg for example. The man is proposing ordinances based mainly on the proposition that people are doing things that offend him personally, like drinking Big Gulps. Oh, he'll make some noises about how they are bad for you, but ultimately, that's what it comes down to. Bloomberg doesn't like it, nobody should have. Thomas Menino is another one. Chick-Fil-A has personally insulted his majesty, with their not having rainbow colored chicken or being open on Sunday, so no Chick-Fil-A in Boston. Chuckie Schumer is another narcissist. Eduardo Saverin hurt his little feelings by renouncing his citizenship so we absolutely must pass a law that rapes the pockets of expats and bans them from ever setting foot in America. That'll teach'em.
I could go on all day, but I have to go pretend to be a productive member of society.
I see the reasoning here, but I can't escape the wafting odor of bovine fecal matter. All of the diagnostic criteria cited here seem vague and pretty common.
Yeah.
"All of the diagnostic criteria cited here seem vague and pretty common."
A million years ago I was a freshman psychology major at university sitting in a 2000 level class. The professor was particularly adept at defining his discipline and it really sunk in. I distinctly remember sitting there with my jaw hanging and thinking to myself "Fuck! This is all bullshit. As soon as class lets out I am going to change my major to chemistry." And I did. And I have never regretted it.
I have known several psychopaths in my day, and not all while working in a mental hospital.
Some years ago my wife and I took in a troubled kid, a friend of her son, cuz he seemed like a good guy who needed some firm ground to stand on. It was like one of those horror movies where the sweet little adopted girl turns out to be satan. Little by little , weird things turned into bad weird things turned into horrible weird things. The final straw was when he confided in me that he had hated his mother so much that he murdered her boston terrier by stabbing it in the throat with a kitchen knife and then hiding the body. "Get out now and dont come back" was all I said.
A sociopath/psychopaths are inhuman to me. When one walks into a room with me I feel a chill. They have no capacity for empathy or sympathy, traits which I consider essential to being human. They see themselves as the only real person in the world; everyone else are just objects that they use for their own selfish purposes. they dont see you any differently than a hammer, a pencil, or a sandwich.
Am I at least a delicious sandwich?
BLT buddy, the best.
: (
I wanted to be a Monte Cristo, the King of Sandwiches.
You have not seen one of my BLTs. Be proud.
I have to agree with Jim. The Monte Cristo is indeed the sandwich of the gods. I've never met a potential hangover it couldn't defeat.
The Monte Cristo is one of those foods that you only have two or three times a decade, because you know that something that tastes that good must surely kill you at some point.
wouldnt that be the Count of Sandwiches?
So basically you're saying they're autistic?
It's different, I think, because they understand the social interactions that people engage in, but don't care. Autistics just don't get it.
I don't think so. Someone suffering from autism has interpersonal deficiencies which s/he has trouble overcoming; a psychopath has deficiencies of affect/empathy on which s/he works very hard (and often successfully) to overcome, at least as far as his/her public facade is involved.
A frank psychopath actively works on conning people and derives much joy from pulling the wool over their eyes. An autistic person neither proficient nor motivated to do the same.
I dont know anything about autism. I get the notion it is some kind of short in the circuitry of 'stimulus in, response out'. That is my simple, and probably mistaken, impression of it.
Actually most psychopaths are capable of empathy when it suits them, this is why they can seem so charming. What seperates them from normal people is they are capable of turning it on and off on command. A normal person can override his sense of empathy but he cannot turn it off and so will feel guilt and shame after violating another person
They only learn to emulate empathy. They have no true feeling of it, and under the right circumstances will tell you so.
Years ago Claudia Rosett had a column in the WSJ about how arrogant and batshit crazy our politicians are. It might have been the best column I've ever read.
They are right up there, if not surpassing, other professions full of the batshit crazy. Professional sports for starters, especially wide receivers in the NFL. Why are wide receivers so prone to batshit craziness? I don't get the link. Also, a lot of actors, Hollyweird, home of some of the most psycho people on the planet. No wonder they get along so well with politicians.
I think entertainers go crazy because once they are famous there is no check on their behavior. Think about what it must be like to be someone like George Clooney. The only requirement the world makes on you is that you stay thin. That is it. You can do or say virtually anything, and you have more money than you could spend in ten lifetimes. It would take a lot of self control not to veer off into some weird shit if for no other reason than out of boredom.
They never went through anything like a middle-class phase. They go from being dirt poor to millionaires overnight - and surrounded by bum-kissing sycophants.
They never had worry about paying their taxes or mortgage or any of the things normal people get caught up in.
It is this that makes me oh so receptive of their views on politics.
Melanie, you may be right. They may be crazy. But it just may be a lunatic you're voting for.
Melanie doesn't "vote". She's just selecting which one she'll kill last.
I watched Commando last weekend. As an pseudo aviation geek, I fucking love the scene on the Western Airlines DC-10. And first class in that movie looks like a shithole compared to first class nowadays.
You are an aviation geek Kristen? You don't meet many civil aviation geeks. I am one too. Once in a while I will go out to end of the runway at Dulles in the mid afternoon right when the wide bodies are coming in from Europe just to watch them land. A big 747 or A 340 is just spectacular at low altitude.
Don't disturb my friend Kristen. She's dead tired.
+eleventy Alyssa Milanos
Yep. I even have a poster of a bunch of civil aircraft in my cube.
I hear Dulles is really shitty for planespotting, because the land at the immediate ends of the runways is secured. I would love to go out there at some point and watch the A380, though. It's just that my camera is a simple point-and-shoot with a small zoom, and folks say you need at least a small telephoto to do the job at Dulles.
I also love listening to ATC (that's what I listen to at work, instead of music) and looking at trackers (flightaware and Casper), especially when I have friends flying. It's a fricken miracle I haven't been picked up by the FBI or TSA or CIA at this point.
I try to get out to Gravelly Point at DCA once in a while when they're landing on runway 19, though the jets are almost all RJs.
Maybe someone will fly the A380 into BWI someday - they have excellent spotting facilities.
I think Youtube is blocked where you are, John, but watch this when you get home. It's a beaut. A380 landing at Manchester.
(can you tell I'm an A380 fan?)
Frankfurt airport has the best plane spotting ever. You can stand on a little road that can't be more than twenty yards from the end of the runway. And it is second only to Heathrow in Europe. So you get everything there. Tons of 747 and wide bodies flying in from the Americas and Asia. Sadly when I was there the A380 hadn't been built yet.
I rode one of Thai Airways' 380s direct from Bangkok to JFK. Unfortunately that route is canceled now.
HM - where is Thai flying their A380 routes these days? Heathrow? CDG?
I know HK Intl (HKG) for a fact. I don't know if they will do LAX or JFK again, supposedly the test runs didn't get enough passengers.
I am fascinated by the old trimotors. The DC 10 and even better and nearly impossible to see L1011. Something about three motors is just interesting.
Figures you're a size queen, Kristen.
Give me a Cessna 150, a Piper Cub in classic yellow, or workhorse bush plane like a Pilatus Porter or a Cessna 208 anyday.
I am a total size queen - I like big, loud machines. It's why I love trains and why I'm a NASCAR fan.
John - the 727 is another one that was real purty back in the day.
KLM still flies the MD11 (reincarnation of the L1011) as a passenger airliner. Not sure if anyone else does.
For spotting, there is, of course, Priness Juliana Airport on St Maarten.
The charters the military uses to get you to Kuwait tend to be ancient MD11s. Anytime you see a "World Airways" MD 11, it is likely full of military people going to or from the middle east.
And and MD 11 is the Boing version of the old DC10. It is what the DC 10 became after Boing bought out McDonald Douglas. And L1011 is the last passenger jet Lockheed ever made.
BTW...Nok Air always has my favorite liveries.
That is great. I always liked the old Southwest Whale planes.
http://www.family-vacation-get.....estAir.gif
Or the Frontier planes with the animals on the tales.
Those are cool liveries. My favorite is Wizz.
I have never doubted that most people who have entered into politics throughout most of history, are at least moderately insane sociopaths or psychopaths. Those type of people crave power and especially power over other people. So politics is a natural draw for exactly the type of people who should not be in positions of power. The only cure for this is to take the power(and the money) out of politics. Until we figure out how to do that, high offices of government will continue to be dominated by nut cases and we will all continue to suffer because of it.
Or go back to hereditary leadership, so at least some of your leaders don't turn out to be psychopaths, and can fix things once every few generations.
Fredo Bush! I jest, it's not that bad of an idea. Royalty has to worry about their heads getting lopped off should they steer the boat off course. Barrack Obama will have seven-figure speaking engagements on his plate for as long as he lives.
Does anyone remembers the mid-90s show "Profit"? The second season was to have the main character, a psychopath in businessman's clothing, join the political scene.
Truly a great show and waaay ahead of it's time.
YES! I think I remember that. The funny thing about it is, I never watched the show myself, I'm not much of a primetime TV watcher. But the CIO of the company I worked for loved the show. I think the fact that he himself was a power hungry psycho who wanted to go into politics, had a lot to do with him liking the show so much. I think he was telling me that the main character of the show, would sleep in a cardboard box?
yep - that's the show. It's available as a DVD set, including the unaired shows.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profit_(TV_series)
er, copy-n-paste whole link (dern squirrels and their parentheses hatred)
Thanks for the link. I might try to watch it now, since I have more time, since our fearless leaders have made me start to not give a fuck so much anymore about aquiring more wealth for them to steal.
The squeeze had me watch a couple episodes on Netflix. I couldn't get into it, but the premise was interesting. I think it was the tone of voice of the star/narrator I couldn't stand and it kind of ruined it for me.
I think sociopaths thrive in every profession. To get ahead, not just live a nice life, but really get ahead as in go to the top, in the world at some point you have to screw someone because there are plenty of people who will willingly screw you. At some point you have to lie, cheat, or stick it to someone unfairly. Most people don't have the stomach for that. A few people will do what is necessary and keep a sense of their humanity. But it is hard. Sociopaths do it willingly and never think a thing about it. Assuming they have proper impulse control and are not out killing hookers for fun, it allows the more intelligent of them to go right to the top of virtually any profession.
No, you don't have to lie, cheat or stick it to people to get ahead, but it may increase your chances.
If you are smart, it certainly increases your chances. Especially lying.
Hey, if they can try to place libertarians on the autism spectrum, why can't we place politicians on the psychopath spectrum?
Libertarians on the autism spectrum? Huh?
OK, I googled it. Just fucking great. So when are we all going to be shipped off to a 'hospital' for re-edu...I mean treatment?
They can all go sit on a sharp stick. I will help them pick it out.
Elias Canetti wrote a masterful comparison between top leaders and insane paranoiacs, in his book, "Crowds and Power." I highly recommend it.
Was the Firesign Theatre the first to popularize "Not insane!" as a campaign slogan? Regardless, the Johnson/Gray organization ought to adopt it.
