The Berenstain Bears and the Chick-fil-A Boycott
So now that Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem have added "No Chick-fil-A" to their concert rider, who will be entertaining the kiddies eating the most religious chicken sandwiches in the country?
That duty falls upon the tiresome, uninteresting Berenstain Bears, who had previously scheduled a kids' meal promotion for August at Chick-fil-A. Cognizant of the growing media circus around the fast food restaurant's donations to Christian groups (a small percentage of which are directly involved in efforts to stop gay marriage recognition), a twee little note appeared on the bears' webpage:
Our publisher, HarperCollins, is marketing several of their Berenstain Bears titles through a kids' meal program at Chick-fil-A scheduled for August. This program was in development for over a year. We were unaware of any controversy involving Chick-fil-A until July 25th.
The Berenstain family does not at this time have control over whether this program proceeds or not. We hope those concerned about this issue will direct their comments toward HarperCollins and Chick-fil-A.
Sincerely, The Berenstain Bears
How should we interpret the idea that there's somebody out there the Berenstain Bears might find too judgmental? Those dreadful ursines have done their best to make childhood reading yet another place where kids face even more lectures by adults rather than a place to make learning fun or let imagination soar. Has any kid ever looked forward to a Berenstain Bears story? You know those are the ones who grow up to go to city council meetings to complain during open comments about children riding their bikes through their neighborhoods without wearing helmets.
The bears do have a handful of Christian-themed books as part of their Living Lights series, produced by Jan and Michael Berenstain. The original creators of the Berenstain Bears, Jan and Stan Berenstein, are both dead now (Stan died in 2005; Jan earlier this year). Michael is their son.
In the category of unintentionally hilarious trivia, the couple's first unpublished story (before Theodor Geisel – a.k.a. Dr. Seuss – got hold of them and started working with them) was called Freddy Bear's Spanking.

I liked them when I was little. We didnt have them at our house, so I would always read them when at my cousins' place.
They were no Seuss, but I had those, and the Bears were something different.
Now I'm hungry. I'm going to Chick-fil-A. I'll be back later.
Like no one knew that Chick-fil-A was a conservative Christian-run company before. All this culture war and class war crap will settle down after the election.
To you it's crap, PL; for me it's a struggle for my civil rights. I support civil rights for everyone, even those who wish me harm (ie, Westboro Baptist) because I know that when anyone loses rights then everyone loses rights.
Unfortunately Necessary Disclaimer: I support the right of Chik-fil-A to be treated just like any other business. I also support the right of individuals to protest or boycott them.
Do you support polygamy? I support the "right" to get government out of the marriage business; a place it doesn't belong. But as long as it is there, everyone should be treated equally under the law.
Not that it matters for this discussion, but I support marriage rights for any group of consenting adult humans.
Good to hear that. You said it was a struggle for your civil rights, just wondered if you felt that way to others with "different*" takes on marriage.
People have the right to their beliefs, and people have the right to suffer the consequences of those beliefs.
*different being not one male/one female.
you do get points for consistency. Meanwhile, the Bear folks have the same right to their opinion as you do to yours. With rights come consequences. Folks who agree with CFA and the Bears will patronize them; those who disagree will boycott.
Not necessarily. I disagree, but I will still patronize, because I go there for chicken sandwiches, not religous philosophy.
^^^THIS. If I were to refrain from patronizing establishments that differ in political philosophy with me, I would have to live in the woods.
Patronize much, guys?
Sure, boycott away. I'm okay with someone boycotting a business for anything they want. But this claptrap is largely a factor of government officials making statements about the company's executive's expressed beliefs.
Nice framing, PL.
The idea that all this falderal is about your civil rights is specious bullshit. It's about perceived political benefit. In fact, though, I'd argue that what the pricks in Boston and Chicago are doing is hurting your cause.
I'd prefer the government not be in the marriage business and I don't especially care who marries whom and I'm pretty sure I'm on your side on this issue, but all this bullshit makes me want to do is eat more Chick-fil-A.
Again with the patronizing. I'll decide what's a civil rights issue for me, and work to achieve my goals. It's understandable that those who oppose civil rights will trivialize, mock and patronize. I lived through the (black) civil rights struggle and your complete denial that there even is a real issue here reads exactly like some of the crap I heard back then(*).
I agree that Menino and Emmanuel are not helping, but I didn't ask for their help and can't take any responsibility for their actions.
*Which is not to imply that you're racist or anything, but rights-deniers always spout the same bullshit no matter who they trying to keep down.
'll decide what's a civil rights issue for me, and work to achieve my goals.
This is the same rationale used by people who make up rights when they are politically expedient. The "right to healthcare"; the "right to a job". Not saying that two (or more) consenting people should be denied the ability to be together, but the logic sounds the same to me.
I support "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Like no one knew that Chick-fil-A was a conservative Christian-run company before.
No shit, they're closed on Sundays so that their employees could "have an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and worship if they choose to do so". And now it turns out their president is against gay marriage? Let me show my shocked face.
Hmmm, my barber is closed on Mondays. Oddly enough, so are the other barbers in the area. Maybe they are religious and Monday is their holy day? Are they Zoroastrians?
I still haven't made it to Chick-fil-A. I'm stuck at Tire Kingdom. Also, the new format does suck on mobile.
You could order a small tire. It would taste sort of like McDonald's knock-off of the Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich.
You know those are the ones who grow up to go to city council meetings to complain during open comments about children riding their bikes through their neighborhoods without wearing helmets.
Note to self- if you ever see a kid in the library with a Berenstein Bear book, push him/her down the stairs.
We read them to our kids when they were little...they weren't their favorites, but a nice change of pace.
And does it make sense for child-oriented groups to fall into lockstep with worldviews that are often hostile to reproduction, not to mention not particularly suited to it?
My daughter loves the Berenstein Bears. She uses the moral lessons to inform her attempts to improve correct her older brother's conduct.
No ampersands? This confuses enrages me!
Bastards! They even filter out the HTML version!
She uses the moral lessons to inform her attempts to improve correct her older brother's conduct.
Careful, you might have a future nanny state busybody on your hands. You may want to nip that behavior in the bud before too long.
If I expected reasonable thinking from the left, I'd be confused and appalled by their reaction on the ChikFilA issue. With all the rest of the nonsense I've witnessed over the years, I'm just further depressed over the future of our culture.
"Our" culture?
You do realize anti-minority Christian fundies never win these battles.
That "whoosh" sound you just heard is you missing the point.
As per usual.
Heh, thanks mlg, I was hoping it wasn't too difficult to get. Not that I would use tony as an appropriate gauge in that regard.
I had a great catfight with some people I went to high-school who were cheering Menino's threats.
I asked them if they'd changed their position of Senator McCarthy. Some of them got it right away. Others eventually owned up to the fact that that Menino was basically doing the same thing that McCarthy had done. But the majority went into impressive mental gymnastics to define them as being different.
Because giving money to an organization that puts out ads is totally more despicable than giving time and money to an organization being run by a hostile government bent on overthrowing the entire political and economic order.
In the end, their argument boiled down to the idea that the opponents of Gay Marriage must now they are evil, while the commies were making an innocent mistake for which they shouldn't be penalized.
^This. Thanks, tarran.
My father used to read the Berenstein Bears to my sisters and me when we were kids. A few years ago, he bought my wife and me a handful of the books for our daughters. My oldest has colored in everyone of them with markers, making them unreadable. She has done this with only one other book (Oh The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss).
All I could think was, "Why didn't I think of that when I was a her age?"
I guess we won't be seeing the publication of Cub Has Two Mama Bears anytime soon. Too bad.
http://www.out.com/sites/out.c.....rt-mom.png
The Berenstein Bears used to be perfectly serviceable children's books until Stan died and the couple's son decided that what picture books for preschoolers about anthropomorphic bears needed was MOAR JESUS. Fuck him.
A bear tried to take my garbage a few weeks ago. Twice. Left it all through the yard. Fuck those things.
You mean these three?
Trash, yummy. HELP!!
Stupid bears.
I liked the bear books when I was a kid. I never realized they were moralizing or Christian. That part didn't stick with me, apparently. However, the weirdness and anti-authoritarianism of Dr. Seuss has stuck with me.
I wonder what'll be South Park take on this?
And for a rare time, Time magazine is against the mayors of Chicago and Boston? http://www.breitbart.com/Big-J.....hick-Fil-A
http://swampland.time.com/2012.....n-chicago/
I thought they were Jewish.
From the Wikipedia article: Stan Berenstain was Jewish and Jan Berenstain was an Episcopalian.
Although I'm not familiar with their recent work, they always had an ecumenical (Judeo-Christian) vibe.
Yeah, I always thought it was the 'Bearenstein' Bears. I guess the idea of a bear wearing a yarmulke is too silly.
Now that you mention it, I seem to recall them drawing that.
She uses the moral lessons to inform her attempts to improve correct her older brother's conduct.
Sounds like somebody might find an express trip to a lower level edifying.
The Berenstain's haven't always been squeaky clean. In the seventies they published a fairly racy (but not explicit) graphic novel "Mr. Dirty vs Mrs Clean" (featuring human characters, not bears). I wonder if this has been buried. Would be interesting to see this resurface and see if Chik-fil-A drops them like a hot waffle fry.
Judging from the statement they made, it doesn't sound as if the partnership will last beyond it's current contractual obligation in any event.
Chick-fil-A does something with VeggieTales, which is overtly Christian.
But as proselytizing cartoons go, infinitely less annoying than Davey Goliath. Bob and Larry are awesome.
Where's my ampersand!!!
I don't know, Davey.
We are the pirates who don't do anything...
Because the writers are geniuses.
Take Sumo of the Opera - they successfully mashed the Mikado *and* Rocky together to produce a moral tale about keeping one's promises - with lessons on how Haikus are constructed.
I also love their 80's album.
which is overtly Christian.
is, or was?
I thought when they got the TV deal, it became less so, with a change in ownership or something.
Dont remember all the details exactly.
the couple's first unpublished story ... was called Freddy Bear's Spanking.
An erotic re-imagining of Goldilocks?
50 Shades of Brown
I'd be willing to bet money that gays and lesbians are just as well-represented among Chick-fil-A's customer base as any other segment of society, and that most of them don't really give a shit about the company's politics. Like the rest of us, they just like a good chicken sandwich every now and then.
I'd be willing to bet money that gays and lesbians are just as well-represented among Chick-fil-A's customer base as any other segment of society
Not anymore, afterall don't gays and lesbians; like blacks, latinos, and womyns, all vote and act as one mono-lithic block? /idiotic lefty "logic"
Like the rest of us, they just like a good chicken sandwich every now and then.
Anyway, it's almost lunch time. I wonder if there's a Chick-Fil-A near by?
A Chick-fil-A smartphone app would have this information. I know all the ones around here but it's handy for travel.
Finding a Chick-fil-A is easy: if where you live has roads and electricity, there will be a Chick-fil-A.
Really? I've never seen nor eaten at a Chick-fil-A. According to Google Maps, the closest one to me is about 20 min away.
*shrugs* When going for fast food, I'd rather have a burger, to be honest.
They do have a great chicken sammich. I'm not a huge fan of the waffle fries.
I'm in the Catskill Mountains; the nearest one to me is in New York City.
So Somalia and India are out.
As sincerely held as I'm sure your opinion is, it's hugely uninformed. Why don't you try talking to some actual gay people and find out whether they eat at Chick-fil-A.
As sincerely held as I'm sure your opinion is, it's hugely uninformed. Why don't you try talking to some actual gay people and find out whether they eat at Chick-fil-A.
Let me guess: you walked into a Chick-fil-A the other day and didn't see a single soul that looked gay, right?
My sister is gay. She eats at Chick-fil-A. So do her gay friends.
Checkmate.
@Tonio, BTW.
I can only report on my own experience, Pip; as can you. It would appear I don't know your sister as every gay person I know (several tens of people) who has spoken about this is in the anti-CFA camp.
So no checkmate. Sorry.
That's supposed to be a joke, right? Don't quit your day job.
That's supposed to be a joke, right? Don't quit your day job.
The real joke here is that you somehow have your finger on the pulse of gay America. Show me some meaningful evidence that gays are abandoning Chick-fil-A in droves.
Crap, I responded to this earlier and it looks like my post was eaten.
I'm gay and I pay attention to political issues which affect us. There's a huge buzz about this in our community.
I don't have hard numbers, but if you pony up some bucks I'll do the research for you. I'm qualified.
And let me turn this around and ask what your particular expertise is that you know that gay people are continuing to patronize CFA in droves?
"I don't have hard numbers..."
The "hard" numbers are that same sore sales are up 10 to 15% since this stupid shit was brought up.
well, maybe not sore, but store
Linky? And since gay people are very much a numerical minority (ten percent, max) it's no surprise that a gay boycott (even a total one, which isn't going to happen) would be easily offset by increased support from fundies.
BTW, 10-15% is a range, not an actual number. HTH.
I don't have hard numbers--
Stop right there. "Buzz" doesn'tmean shit. Just because your gay friends are militant lefties doesn't mean there's some groundswell of antipathy toward CFA by the gay community.
--but if you pony up some bucks I'll do the research for you. I'm qualified.
Now I know you're a troll.
And let me turn this around and ask what your particular expertise is that you know that gay people are continuing to patronize CFA in droves?
Expertise? None at all. Just my realization that most gay people just want to go about their lives. And for most of them who like some nice yardbird every now and again, the ramblings of one old man are hardly going to be enough to dissuade them from that.
Whenever I order at any fast food restaurant, the last thing I care about is what the politics of the company's president/ CEO are. Mostly I just hope the kid making my sandwich doesn't spit in it.
Whenever I order at any fast food restaurant, the last thing I care about is what the politics of the company's president/ CEO are.
Agreed. Their food will always cause me more harm than their politics.
I just hope the kid making my sandwich doesn't spit in it.
Not to rehash this topic, but that's why I'm unfailingly polite to fast-food workers. Sure, you might think you're being all witty and cool by berating the kid behind the counter for forgetting to hold the mayo, but it's he who'll have the last laugh when he's finished beating off on your Big Mac.
"Don't fuck with people that handle your food." - Ryan Reynolds from the movie Waiting.
it's he who'll have the last laugh when he's finished beating off on your Big Mac.
You don't want to know what's in the "special sauce".
Another bit of advice from a former teenage Burger King employee: DO NOT go through the drive-thru of a fast food place within 30 minutes of closing time.
DO NOT go through the drive-thru of a fast food place within 30 minutes of closing time.
I remember an SNL sketch where John Larroquette played a guy who'd just died and gone to heaven. Dana Carvey was his guardian angel, and knew every moment of ths guy's life. So the guy asks the angel, "Okay, what's the grossest thing I ever unknowingly ate?"
The angel says, "umm, you don't want to know."
So the guy says, "okay, what's the second grossest thing I ever ate?"
The angel says, "you really don't want to know that either."
So finally, the guy asks, "okay, what's the 237th grossest thing I ever unknowingly ate??"
The angel replies, "one time you ate a bowl of rice pudding; but instead of rice, it had maggots in it."
Seeing as how I've more than once gone to BK within half an hour of closing, I now know what question I won't be asking my guardian angel (or demon concierge, or whatever).
Holy fuck, am I the only one sick to death about this subject?
Can it go back to the hell it came from now?
Holy fuck, am I the only one sick to death about this subject?
Like I said above, I didn't want to rehash it. But Loki just had to bring it up, and I saw it as my duty to nip it in the bud again. So you should really be thanking me.
JW, I see now that you were addressing the main topic of Chick-fi-A. The way this thing is threaded made it look like you were addressing this little subtopic of tainted fast food. My bad.
According to several of my facebook friends, this is the single most important civil rights issue of our times. According to one dude, because of Citizen United rich people like those who own Chic-Fil-A are buying and selling politicians like they were trading cards, and we have to put curbs on the First Amendment because the poor can't have free speech if the rich do. Seriously that was his defense for keeping Chic-Fil-A out of Chicago.
We ought to have some libertarian Congress-critter trading cards! Maybe Reason can offer a set. It would start out small, and hopefully add more in future years....
Don't worry, JW, I'll still be there for you when they come for your rights. No problem that you haven't helped with mine, because I know that when anyone loses, everyone loses.
However, don't count on me to piss on you if you catch fire.
So, the CEO of a company has a personal belief that marriage should be between a man a woman, and your rights are being taken?
Interesting.
Uh, no. I may not be the best writer, but I don't see where you got that.
Also, my understanding is that its corporate donations, not individual.
With Chik-Fil-A, I think that may be the same thing. IIRC, they are privately held.
The only difference is whether the tax benefit comes from the first or 2nd half of the double taxation.
Verified, BTW, they are privately held by the Cathy family.
This is part of the problem. I would prefer that NO corporation donate money, it should be passed thru to the owners to do with as they see fit. However, tax policy encourages that it be done this way.
It would piss off the United Way and some other big charities with lobbyists, but I wouldnt mind seeing the law change and remove corporate tax breaks for donations.
Don't worry, JW, I'll still be there for you when they come for your rights. No problem that you haven't helped with mine, because I know that when anyone loses, everyone loses.
So, if I don't want to talk about this 24/7 and share the same level of outrage over that you seem to, that makes me a bad person?
Interesting theory.
Don't worry, JW, I'll still be there for you when they come for your rights. No problem that you haven't helped with mine, because I know that when anyone loses, everyone loses.
Tonio, I'm not sure how this argument is supposed to be compelling. Chik-fil-A makes a public statement concerning their stance in the marriage debate. Are we to believe that every other store is pro-gay marriage? Or that Chik-fil-A holds some significant control over the electorate that will prevent gay marriage? As libertarians, are we to remove ourselves from every person who disagrees with our politics, many of whom have no problem with voting more laws that will restrict our freedoms?
To be perfectly fair, none of my progressive lefty friends give a shit about Chick-fil-A, or are participating in this boycott.
I don't know where Reason got the idea that anyone gives a crap.
A FB friend of my wife's, had a long thread on her wall about it. Many people commenting about boycotting, and about how evil the ChikFilA people are, and multiple "why are they spewing hate!?!?" comments.
Apparently your facebook lefty friends aren't as blind as a lot of the others.
Ok, I just checked my facebook page and there is still nothing on it.
Nobody is talking about this.
Try talking to actual, out, gay people, Hazel. Progressives talk a good game, Hazel, but talk is cheap.
Also, Chik-fil-A per se isn't a huge issue, but exposing those who fund anti-gay* lobby groups is.
(*)Yeah, I know, they aren't anti-gay, they pity us and want to help us and they don't have any choice because of what the bible blah, blah, blah...
Just visit towleroad.com. It's been going on like this for a couple of weeks.
I'm someone Hazel, and I care about this. Also, talk to some actual gay people.
I care about this too. So, Tonio, do you boycott Muslim-owned businesses too? One cannot be a good Muslim and disagree with the Qur'an teaching that gays must be executed. Do you always ask the Muslim owner to go on the record that he supports gay marriage? What about African-American businesses? We all know that African-Americans are among the most hostile demographics toward gay marriage. Do you boycott them as well unless you get a proof that they support the basic human right of our times?
I value tolerance per se. And I'm ready to do business with people who disagree with me on important issues. Not to be close friends with them, but not to be actively hostile to them either.
BTW, I'm gay and last Saturday my boyfriend and I made a trip to the closest Chick-fil-A, which is not close if you live in Boston.
Ok, grizzly, you seem to be saying that if I don't boycott every business known to be hostile to gay people, or owned by people who are members of groups who are generally hostile to gay people, then....what?
But for the record, I soft boycott all businesses with religious affiliation or message.
So, exercising my choice to not do business with the religious is being actively hostile? Really? You're as bad as the people who whine about hate speech being violence.
So you and your boyfriend ate at CFA. So what? Perhaps you were expecting me to call you a traitor to the cause of gay liberation? I can recommend a Boston area Dom if you're looking for abuse.
Well, no, Tonio, that was not exactly his point (I believe, and he is free to correct me). Why are you selectively choosing to boycott this business when other businesses, by virtue of the nature of their principals/owners, must be discriminatory against gays?
This business is very unpopular in the lefty circles. While Muslims and blacks donate money and vote Democratic. It's much more convenient to be in sync with the waves of outrage in your own social circles.
My choices are my own, Randy, and if you don't like them that's fine with me. I don't feel obligated to act in a manner which you find consistent or acceptable, but I'm still there for you and your rights even if I dont' like you.
And as pointed out above, I'm very careful about where I spend my money. But I do that so I can live with myself, not to win favor with the commentariat here.
I soft boycott businesses that are too pushy on the environmentalist stuff (that's the religion that I detest), but I don't begrudge other people who shop there.
I mentioned my own visit to CFA because everywhere up-thread you were bringing up the universal outrage at CFA among gays. There's nothing universal about it.
I don't believe I characterized it as "universal".
Also, still waiting for you to clarify "hostile".
I took as much abuse at CFA as you do when you order your favorite Middle Eastern food.
Re: HazelMeade,
Does the fact that they are not outraged at the possible infringement on their right to choose for themselves not give you pause?
I attended the Brandi Carlile concert in Atlanta last Friday. She got a big cheer when she announced that she had given up tequila and now she's given up Chick-Fil-A. All I could think was that if I only spent money on people who totally agreed with my politics not only would I not be at her show (making a wild guess that she leans Democrat), I would be a lot richer except for being naked, hungry and homeless.
Seriously, are the perpetually outraged going to give a questionnaire to each business owner they encounter to decide if it's okay to spend money there?
Isn't the whole point of America that we do business/live among each other and not really give a damn about each other's personal beliefs, so long as others aren't actively trying to harm us?
In order to be tolerant, we must stamp out the intolerant!!! If you don't agree with me, you are intolerant, and the world must know, and boycott/protest you back to the hell hole you crawled out of.
I liked the Bearenstein Bears when I was little, although more for the art than the writing. They tended to stick a lot of interesting details in the backgrounds of the drawings and the schizotech engineering in the Bear society was interesting to me too.
This shit bothers me much more than whether CFA's CEO buy hair straighteners in bulk at the local Ulta to hand out to gay men with curly hair. You take your kid to CFA and they get this religious themed coloring book or reading material from these fucking cultists and you start wondering whether the more benign but still truly revolting Olympics propaganda from McD's would have been a better choice in return for that awful feeling a Big Mac leaves in your gut for 4 or 5 hours.
But then I think back to being a kid, and I lived through all the same weird messages from everywhere shit and I turned out OK. And CFA's chicken salad sandwich is really good if you have to do fast food.
I will boycott a company for their actual business practices, but I draw the line at having to be interested in what they do on their own time. That includes who they give thier money to, who they vote for, etc... Once you cross that line, it seems to me you can't really be morally consistent without asking the guy who checks your crawlspace for termite damage whether or not he supports ethanol subsidies.
That said, people have the right to boycott any company for whatever stupid reason they can come up with.
Also, Chick-fil-a is delicious.
Re: Apple,
Same here - if the business practices of a company compel it to not offer value for money, that company will be placed on my "To Boycott" list. Serves them right.
Or... what practices were you talking about?
You know what he meant and you're choosing to be clueless, as always.
Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, Peachy.
Not the quote and not applicable.
How much time and energy would you expect individuals to expend in order to ensure that they are properly "voting with their dollars"? You're frankly asking people to engage in behavior that is not rational: the CEO of Chick-fil-A is going to have his opinion, just like his EVPs and SVPs and VPs will. What if the rest of the organization is staffed by people who are either pro-gay or just don't give a damn?
Uh, exactly when did I ask anyone here to boycott CFA, Randy? Please reference post by time and include relevant quote.
For the record HR has been buggy for me this afternoon - every time I've posted to this thread the site has logged me out. So I've not been able to respond to all posts, and the responses I've made have not been in a timely manner.
Giving up on this, hoping it will be fixed tomorrow.
But just foolish consistency, right? Or is all consistency foolish?
^^Threaded comment fail.
