Waterworld Unlikely Since Antarctic Refuses To Melt, Housing and Durable Goods Figures Improve, Cops Shoot Dog In Front of Young Owner: P.M. Links
-
Obama and Romney remain locked in a neck and neck race, with differences in their numbers falling within the statistical margin of error. The incumbent remains slightly stronger in swing states.
- Antarctic ice shelves aren't melting at all, according to new data, which is based on the first ever direct measurement of the ice, and not on computer models. The information was gathered, in part, by attaching sensor packages to elephant seals. Damn. And I was looking forward to waterworld.
- Pending sales of homes were up 5.9 percent in May, exceeding most forecasts and matching a two-year high. Durable goods orders were up 1.1 percent, with a 1.6 percent rise in those goods that indicate business investment. So … the apocalypse may not be, quite, imminent.
- San Bernardino County, in California, plans to use eminent domain powers to seize underwater mortgages with an eye toward restructuring them. Economist Robert Shiller is pushing for a national plan along the same lines. It's a good thing governments are rolling in uncommitted cash. Oh, wait …
- Stockton, California, has become the largest U.S. city to go into bankruptcy. The city ran up massive debt during boom years. Yeah, it's always a good idea to spend more than you bring in even during healthy economic times.
- Spain is pushing to have an anticipated bailout delivered directly to its banks so the money doesn't add to the government's already huge debt load. The country's economy continues to suffer, with unemployment at 24.4 percent.
- On the seventh anniversary of the Kelo decision, Senators John Cornyn and Rand Paul introduced legislation that would prevent the use of federal power or funds to implement eminent domain for economic development.
- The Miami-Dade Police Department is disciplining 44 detectives who drove 90 mph or faster more than 400 times, in violation of both the law and department rules. The move is part of the fallout from a newspaper investigation that used toll records to expose almost 800 cops, most of whom are habitual speeders.
- Cops in Mount Vernon, New York, killed a pit bull they said was attacking a man. But witnesses and the boy's ten-year-old owner, who was there, say the dog was defending itself after the man assaulted it with a 2 x 4. But Elgin, Illinois, may be the dog-shootingest town around. Since 2008, cops have unloaded on 23 dogs, killing 19 — a far larger number than neighboring, bigger, communities.

...in violation of both the law and department rules.
And I think we all know which was the graver betrayal.
Getting caught by a newspaper reporter. Duh.
Clearly there's more to this story than police shooting a kid's dog for no reason.
Thank goodness the coppers showed up to rescue those animals from the dog fighting ring.
I wish Michael Vick would put down Pitbull... I hate seeing his stupid ass on TV.
The settled science's data are finally meeting reality. But I say if the South Pole ain't melting, why is so much property now planned to be seized by eminent domain under water?
"Twenty-year-old models ..."
That's the problem right there. What do 20 year olds know about the Antarctic, especially models?
They probably don't even know about the shoggaths.
I don't have any problem with 20 year old models.
It's a conspiracy perpetrated by elephant seal denialists.
They do have a blood feud to settle against the walruses, who stand (along with the polar bears) to lose the most from global warming.
This is the first time anyone actually bothered to measure the ice when one of the biggest "dangers" of AGW is that it's gonna drown all of us in melted Antarctic ice?
Who needs to measure reality when the models do such a great job of supporting your agenda?
Well, they measured it and look what happened! Modeling suddenly doesn't look rock solid.
Good point. They should have avoided it longer.
Or accuse the seals of being paid by the oil companies.
Well, that's just dumb. Seal oil is a competitor to normal oil.
By paying the seals, which keeps the seals well fed and alive, they drive down the supply of seal oil. Thereby, the oil companies get double profits.
Diabolical.
How do you think they got so rich? By not being evil and brilliant? Don't be ridiculous.
Pretty much every study I've ever seen where they measure something fails to support the models. Which would be fine if they were feeding those measurements back into the models to make more accurate models.
At least no one is using the models to suggest policies that would have drastic impact on people's quality of life.
That's just silly. I just got done designing a tool to automatically calibrate engine controllers based on test data, and let me say that I've never seen measurements make models more accurate. You just make up the models to get the result you want.
Guess what boys, our engine emissions meet standards according to the model! Now don't bother actually measuring them.
Which would be fine if they were feeding those measurements back into the models to make more accurate models.
Big no-no. We in the industry call that overfitting and nasally rape anyone who does it.
... No.
Overfitting is when you try to match every single data point exactly (e.g. you have 1000 data points so you make a 999th order polynomial). Using a larger dataset to refit your model but with the same order isn't overfitting.
Overfitting is the wrong word, correct.
My point is that if you use validation data as training data your model will suffer.
Well obviously, there is something wrong with the data. Give me a few days of "adjusting" the data and I'll make it fit the models. Just remember you won't be able to understand the "adjustments" so there is no point in asking for them.
Well this was patently ridiculous even WITHOUT measurements. The average temperature in the interior of the Antarctic: -57 degrees C...even with the worst of the worst predictions, +6 degrees C only raises the temp to -51. Aint no melting happening any time soon.
Even on the coasts, the seasonal high at the peak of summer is only -3 C.
You know, they should open up Antarctica to private development. This bullshit about keeping it pristine forever is, well, bullshit.
You mean all those breathless news reports of warming doom complete with video of disintegrating Antarctic glaciers in February were misleading?
Stockton, California, has become the largest U.S. city to go into bankruptcy.
Move over, Harrisburg!
I just got a little longer.
Spain is pushing to have an anticipated bailout delivered directly to its banks so the money doesn't add to the government's already huge debt load.
A bailout doesn't put you into debt. It's a gift. No one expects you to pay it back.
You know the problem with giving money to deadbeats is that they always want more.
I believe some of them are actually structured as loans.
THAT'S THE JOKE!
So it looks like the military is finally going to start mobilizing some resources to fight the fire here in C Springs, just as the Air Force Academy is threatened and Obama plans to make a visit. Imagine that.
Seriously, for the amount of support and time spent fellating the military this town does, you'd think we'd get a little more support in return.
Also have yet to get an evac notice, thank god.
Also have yet to get an evac notice, thank god.
Hope it stays that way. I have several friends out that way, and I've been worried for them.
The US military gave up the job of defending the USA years ago and became a global enforcer so most of the units in the USA have low priority for manpower, money and parts so they are not ready for much of anything. Its only when they get orders to go overseas that they get a high priority and are brought up to full readiness.
So don't expect much, a few hundred personnel with minimum firefighting capability and some equipment that is marginally capable for fighting fires.
Funny how he shows up in a swing state like Co. but tells Texas last year to go fuck itself.
Apparently firefighting equipment is the one thing Obama decided to be frugal about.
Less than a year ago, the same administration seemed to be doing its best to leave the Forest Service ill-equipped to deal with the mounting wildfire threat, by summarily cancelling a contract with a company that furnished roughly one third of the wildfire-fighting tankers in the agency's already-depleted fleet. That action might loom large as calls mount for an investigation into why the agency's air assets seem inadequate to meet the threat."
Washington-based Human Events magazine reported in September of 2011 that nearly half of the federal government's air tankers sat idle at a California airport, as wildfires ripped through national forests throughout California, Texas, New Mexico, and other states.
It turns out the Obama administration ended a long-standing contract, leaving the Forest Service with only 11 tankers to battle 50 wildfires that were burning nationwide. A decade ago, the Forest Service had 40 firefighting tankers.
http://twitchy.com/2012/06/27/.....re-friday/
The Obama administration canceled the government's contract with Aero Union ? a company with 60 employees that had been under contract with the Forest Service for 50 years. Though it canceled that contract, the administration had no plan for an immediate replacement. Aero Union CEO Britt Gourley told Human Events the administration provided no details on why the contract was ended.
"They didn't want to talk about it," Gourley said of Obama administration officials
I was wondering about that last night. For years the AGW alarmists have been screaming about how the entire Western United States was going to burn, but they didn't think to use any of the stimulus money to buy the western states more or better firefighting equipment.
Serves you right for hosting AFA instead of a good academy.
I don't know about Waterworld, but the threat of rogue dolphins is real. How have the coonasses not killed and cooked this thing yet?
It looks like the House has about 20 Dems on board to vote for the contempt resolution against Holder. I guess this thing is now bipartisan, right shrike?
YOu know who else had a six letter last name that started with "H" and ended with "er" and had an "l" in the middle?
Mr. Hilter?
Which one did you have in mind?
It begins: E.J. Dionne calls for Scalia to resign.
Serious question: What is it with E.J.'s tongue?
Spend the bulk of your time probing Obama's rectum and you'll figure it out.
He wanted to get that in before Obamacare goes down, apparently.
He has his orders.
I am starting to wonder if the beltway people don't already know it is going down and just can't say.
It seems pretty clear, doesn't it?
I hope so
I am starting to wonder if the beltway people don't already know it is going down and just can't say.
Some oarticle I read yesterday said that somewhere between 100-150 people knew what the decision was shortly after oral arguments ended, and that this is typical. But it also said the Court hasn't suffered a leak in decades. I hope you're right, though.
The thing is that if a reporter knows the result, he can't say it publicly because that would make him persona non grata at the court.
I don't if I can trust news carved into a tool used for rowing.
*nyuk nyuk nyuk*
I don't if I can trust news carved into a tool used for rowing.
If you're ever commissioned to write for an industry journal serving the canoe and kayak industries, you now know what to call your pieces.
I think failing to write a one sentence comment with a verb in it removes me from the running.
No, no, no, oarticle is a combination of oracle and article. It is the functional equivalent of a Nostradamus-esque piece of writing.
No, no, no, oarticle is a combination of oracle and article. It is the functional equivalent of a Nostradamus-esque piece of writing.
Right?? I'm glad someone gets it.
I am starting to wonder if the beltway people don't already know it is going down and just can't say.

Dang. How do they kept it that close lipped?
Why don't they just announce the decision immediately? I can't think of any good reason for waiting and making it dramatic, other than the Supremes wanting to increase their prestige.
(a) You may have answered you own question.
(b) They still have to write up their opinions in to proper form, add footnotes responding to each others' arguments, and have the clerks look up the relevant citations.
What boggles the mind is that Scalia thought it proper to jump into this political argument. And when he went on to a broader denunciation of federal policies, he sounded just like an Arizona Senate candidate.
What better place to discuss the Executive Branch practicing a la carte Federalism (you may not enforce immigration law when we won't, but we may enforce and interpret your state's marijuana laws as we see fit) than in a dissenting opinion?
What boggles the mind is that Scalia thought it proper to jump into this political argument.
Anyone have a link to Dionne's column calling for Obama to resign when Obama jumped into a judicial argument?
Not content with issuing a fiery written dissent, Scalia offered a bench statement ...
What the hell is he talking about? What's a "bench statement"? His link just sends you to the opinion.
I'd like to bang [whatever 20something actress is considered hot right now]. But I'm not deluded or narcissistic enough to write an article openly demanding it.
Former Cigna executive "goes Judas," and is now cheerleading for Obamacare. After all, he reasons, Jesus ministered to the sick, so we should too.
But I guess it's understandable: the left, including CNN, is panicking over the anticipated striking down of all or most of the ACA, so there's been an uptick in stories like this.
religion.blogs.cnn.com
"Jesus ministered to the sick"
But did Rome?
In this reality, the government is the messiah.
In this reality, the government is the messiah.
Well, at least one government employee I can think of fits that title . . .
Jesus was backed by an omniscient and omnipotent God. Our government, accepting all Christian dogma as accurate for the moment, is backed by the opposition. You know, the one with all the great metal bands.
This is why I'm a pagan. I can't stand harps.
So is the left for state religion again? Finally, we can use those Bastiat quotes unedited.
I knew it was going to be Wendell Potter. He's been a professional scold at Huffington Post ever since he figured out that being a sensationalist author/progressive shill pays better than being an insurance executive. His book came out 3 years ago, and he's been on the same schtick ever since. I couldn't read past the first sentence, why is CNN pretending that this is news?
His book came out 3 years ago, and he's been on the same schtick ever since. I couldn't read past the first sentence--
Wait, please tell me you didn't buy it . . .
Cornyn is my rep. I hate him a little less every day.
Oh, there's still plenty of reasons to hate Cornyn.
Agreed. But this is the second libertarian thing he's done in as many months. I still want to leave a bag of shit at his office (used to share a building with it), but now I won't light it on fire.
He awarded "Lawman of the Year" to that asshole that got 1/3 of the black population of Trulia imprisoned on false charges.
Cornyn is my rep. I hate him a little less every day.
Screw that guy...he keeps spelling his name wrong.
Muslims and Jews finally unite - to champion circumcision
http://fullcomment.nationalpos.....um=twitter
It is now illegal to be Jewish or Muslim in Germany.
Wow, that never happened before.
No, it is just illegal to mutilate an infant in one judicial circuit in Germany.
Sweet! We haven't had a good dick cutting argument in forever.
My favorite was MNG claiming the a cartoon that depicted a super hero rescuing babies from evil hideous looking rabis was not anti Semitic.
If I ever have any girls, I'm circumcising the shit out of those little whores. Fuck clitorises.
I've always loved how female circumcision is a gross violation of a person's wholeness and blatant attempt by the Patriarchy to establish dominance over the female as individual and class, while male circumcision as a form of dedicating a person to a god and religion from birth without his consent is superduper.
Note: I understand that female circumcision is a digusting mutilation of the human body, but I reject the argument that male circumcision is somehow less of one. The fact that it doesn't completely and permanently destroy sexual pleasure somehow make it OK? Whatever.
The fact that it doesn't completely and permanently destroy sexual pleasure somehow make it OK?
Of course it destroys sexual pleasure. Those nerve endings in the foreskin aren't there for nothing.
Uncircumcised dicks make you look fucking ridiculous.
That trumps all.
Anyone whose dick doesn't look like mine is a fucking freak and should be put down like a rabid dog and then forced to enter a monastery where only fellow freaks will ever see their freak dicks again.
I don't doubt that some male sexual sensation is destroyed in male circumcision. My point is that people who say female circ bad, male circ good usually try to argue that female circumcision destroys sexual sensation to a higher degree than does male circumcision. So what? Both are unacceptable intrusions on the right of an individual. The "health benefits" argument is ridiculous as well. Same principle applies.
The two are not even close. Male circumcision hardly affects sexual pleasure and has health benefits. Female circumcision destroys it and has not health benefits.
Male circumcision hardly affects sexual pleasure
How do you know?
and has health benefits.
Dubious ones, which are minor in any case. Circumcision is nothing but a tribal marker, the same thing as those African tribes who lengthen their women's necks with the rings. And for those of us who aren't Joos, we get it done just because... because fuck you, that's why. It's retarded.
I think it is unnecessary. But I would not put it on the same level of mutilation as female circumcision. I wouldn't make it illegal.
It's not the same level, but it's not that far below it. And I wouldn't ban it, but I do tell people that they're assholes for doing it to their boys.
The most common type of female circumcision is removal of the clitoral hood. Basically identical to male circumcision.
How do you know?
How do you know?
We need to find someone who got snipped in adulthood.
Not really. Most people who get snipped in adulthood do so for medical reasons (phimosis, among others) and as such are ecstatic to have a functioning penis again.
If you graft me a new hand, I'll say it's better than no hand, even if it has no feeling at all.
most people who get snipped in adulthood do so for medical reasons
Not all. Some get it for aesthetic reasons.
Do I have to re-qualify my statment or are we good?
That depends. Is anyone going to just snip the tip of their penis without a good reason? Might that reason make them happy with their choice?
Okay then. Find me someone who snipped just for the hell of it, and we'll ask him if he misses the majority of nerve endings on his penis.
Chopping off a toe could have health benefits in the form of fewer ingrown toe nails. That doesn't mean it should be done to an infant.
You can also avoid ingrown toenails by going barefoot like we were meant to. FUCK SHOES
Not the same things Cytotixic. Circumcision has a long list of known health benefits.
http://www.circinfo.net/
I once made the argument to a friend that if he was going to circumcise his kid so that he wouldn't have to clean out the smegma, he should chop off his buttcheeks so that he'd never get swampass. And then I giggled for a while at the thought of an assless man.
Yep. That sure is a well reasoned and impartial site. Apparently there were 2 deaths from not being circumcised. Unless they got their foreskin caught in a thresher, I'm calling bullshit.
They died because they developed a condition they wouldn't have developed had they been circumcised. The data is what it is.
And what fatal disease affects only the foreskin?
The science is settled.
"The epidemiology surrounding male circumcision is surprisingly fuzzy. But it is clear that there are risks associated with the practice. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that between 0.2% and 0.6% of circumcised boys experience complications, especially hemorrhage, infection and what is known in the literature by the stomach-turning euphemism of "surgical mishap" (which can include full loss of penis). The American Academy of Family Physicians has estimated a circumcision-related death rate of 1 in 500:000. All this explains why the Fetus and Newborn Committee of the Canadian Pediatric Society has declined to support the routine circumcision of newborn boys."
http://fullcomment.nationalpos.....um=twitter
That doesn't mean it should be done to an infant.
Anti-biotic cause allergies and asthma if given to very young children.
yet it is their parents who choose to treat their children with them or not. Parents make all sorts of health choices for their children everyday.
I'm circumcised. The doctors back then were doing it to all the kids, not just the ones who got it for religious reasons. My objection? I can never time-travel to Nazi Germany now.
Good. You'd probably kill Hitler, you moron.
No, my plan is more devilishly cunning.
Clone a copy of him in the Brazilian jungles?
My objection? I can never time-travel to Nazi Germany now.
I have always wondered if this was not the plan to begin with.
Not the time traveling part...but the part about how snipping everyone makes it hard for antisemitism to descend on America.
Devious, yet simple.
+1. Properly politically incorrect on several levels!
Fuck clitorises.
I see what you did there.
Obama and Romney remain locked in a neck and neck race
Check back after tomorrow's dual festivities (ObamaCare ruling and Holder contempt vote).
I predict the results will be the same.
Kraft makes waves with Pride rainbow Oreo

I don't see what anybody has to complain about. Uh, licking the cream filling out from between two cookies is already pretty gay, people.
Did the government mandate Oreo Equality or something?

The truth about Fast and Furious
The guts of the story doesn't back that up at all. At best they have the ATF claiming "there is no policy to let guns walk". Yet even the story admits guns did.
I posted that this morning in the AM Links
Excellent take down of that article. It purposely leaves out a few facts.
Customers can legally buy as many weapons as they want in Arizona as long as they're 18 or older and pass a criminal background check. There are no waiting periods and no need for permits, and buyers are allowed to resell the guns.
By law they have to go to an FFL to transfer firearms unless it's to a close relative.
No, just... no. There is no requirement to use an FFL to transfer weapons as long as you are not transferring the weapons across state lines.
Some states do require it, but it isn't a Federal law, yet.
I stand corrected.
Straw purchasing is still illegal (as in 10 years in federal prison illegal), as is dealing without a federal license (another 10 years), which if you're selling guns for fun and profit counts.
Oh yes, and exporting them without a license is ANOTHER 10 years. So yeah, article is full of shit.
xkcd finally cynical enough on the Moon landing. And unlikely to be punched by Buzz Aldrin.
I believe these two things.
1. The moon landing were real.
2. Historians one hundred years from now wont believe it.
landings
Too late. You already admitted there was only one.
Have you seen the weenies that supposedly came after Buzz and Neil?
I felt the program went downhill when they started recruiting elementary school teachers.
...too soon?
We have photographic evidence now of the Moon landings, and even if people want to believe that NASA faked that, too, it won't be long before other countries and private companies also can provide such evidence.
Any conspiracy that requires thousands of people to keep a secret is just a wee bit unlikely.
That was a comment on the state of the history profession. Thadeus excepted, of course.
No, I got that. I just meant the evidence will get pretty overwhelming, especially after Bigelow/Disney/SpaceX announce the opening of Neil Armstrong World. An Apollo/Disney theme park on the Moon.
Sadly bereft of mailboxes. NEVER FORGET.
They still take Marxism seriously as a rigorous scientific discipline in their field, surely a little thing like physical evidence wont get in their way.
It hasn't yet.
But only half a dozen people need to keep the conspiracy secret. The thousands of other people don't know it's a conspiracy.
Half a dozen? How on Earth could you fake the Moon landings with half a dozen people back in the 1960s?
Simple, you idiot. You use thousands of people to send a real rocket to the Moon, while you produce a fake moon landing on a soundstage. It's the perfect cover.
I've always assumed that the Moon landings were faked by the CIA in its secret sound stage on the Moon.
"Any conspiracy that requires thousands of people to keep a secret is just a wee bit unlikely."
The Kennedy assassinations and 9/11 prove you wrong.
Prove me right, you mean?
Been a while since I've seen a troofer around these parts. How's it going retard?
Wasn't Dan T. a troofer? Or maybe it was Dave W.
IT was Dave W.
My favorite part was his response after I cited my knowledge gained as a naval officer on a carrier (which taught me a few things about arming, launching and vectoring interceptors) to explain why his ideas about the air force shooting flight 93 down were impossible. His response? That my naval experience proved I was unusually gullible since the military liked hiring gullible people because they obeyed orders with less fuss, and that therefore I was too credulous to recognize the fact that flight 93 was brought down by an aircraft nobody saw, using ordnance nobody saw - since any skeptical thinking person would know that if the Air Force lacked the capability to shoot down Flight 93 over Pennsylvania, that would mean they lacked the capability to keep Castro from nuking the U.S.; since the Air Force would never allow the U.S. to be vulnerable to Cuban nukes smuggled on passenger aircraft, flight 93 was shot down... Q.E.D.
FARCES WANNA MO
Indeed, Q, E, and D.
/sarc
wow I thought that throwing the Kennedy assassinations in there would be a give away.
If it makes you feel any better, I thought you were kidding.
He was serious. He's kidding now about kidding.
No, I think he's serious about the kidding, which he was kiddingly serious about.
I thought there was a strong chance you were joking as well but I like insulting troofers so I posted anyways.
What the empirical data does to the models should be considered a hate crime. Clearly there should be a moratorium on funding it for the sake of objectivity. You can't be full of hate and remain objective, after all.
Waterworld was always impossible. It would take 136 Earths worth of water to make it happen. Apocalypse porn for the watermelons.
Oh, come on. You have to suspend disbelief sometimes for the sake of great art.
'Great art'
"I'll take one art, please!"
That one never gets old!
Hi Mary! Your incredibly weak trolling these days is...DELICIOUS.
Dude, I'm not Mary. I'm just a big fan of the above comeback to the "art is fungible" comment.
Waterworld is secretly the aftermath of a bunch of ice asteroids crashing down.
That's better. I say that we had a colony on Titan that went to war with Earth. It started shooting ring material at high speeds at Earth. That's mostly water, so there you go!
If that's no good, then comets used as weapons.
Think of the prequel possibilities.
I'm sending the treatment to whatever dumb studio made Waterworld.
I want a cut.
Well, they pay screenwriters like 90% of the take, right? So I should have plenty of largess to dispense.
"Ice asteroids" are generally known as "comets".
Uh, the water didn't rise, dummy. The land sank.
Then why was Mount Everest the location of land at the end of the film? That would imply that the sea level rose to the height of 28,000 feet.
Um, maybe it turns out that all of the mountains are hollow and filled with water that leaked out?
Um, maybe it turns out that all of the mountains are hollow and filled with water . . .
Well what the fuck else would make them stand erect like that?
Sexy cave pictures.
Jessica Biel's ass?
What is everyone's plan for tomorrow morning? I've got office scotch at the ready (for either case).
Ululation out the window.
Cum buckets. I have a three year rageboner waiting to be released.
You owe me a towel Dr. Groovus to wipe up the water I just sprayed on my computer.
Nicely played, BTW.
Water. Sure.
I'm hoping to sweeten my coffee with some yummy leftist tears.
Your daily dose of stupid, courtesy of Slate's Supreme Court legal blog and its commentators.
I don't believe there is a legitimate justification for setting aside this product of enormous effort by the elected branches of government.
Because it's...wait for it...UNCONSTITUTIONAL?
Product of enormous effort? That's your justification for keeping the motherfucker? Jesus Christ, do these people get stupider by the day?
See, you lazy Southerners? If you had just put forth the effort to make Jim Crow a 2000 page law, you could have kept it.
Well played.
Jesus Christ, do these people get stupider by the day?
Yes
I shouted out, who killed Obamacare,
When after all it was you and me . . .
Pleased to meet you, I hope you guessed my name.
Yup, it wasn't the message that was the problem, it was the mean Justice interrupting all the time.
None of which actually addresses the constitutionality of the legislation.
"My fellow earthicans we enjoy so much freedom it's almost sickening. We're free to choose which hand our sex-monitoring chip is implanted in and if we don't want to pay our taxes why we're free to spend a weekend with the Pain Monster."
Wouldn't you have to be able to buy insurance across state lines for it to be interstate? And wouldn't not buying it mean you weren't in the market?
First off, the argument is that not buying something which you can't buy across state lines means you are not engaging in "commerce among the several States". Secondly, they didn't even take the effort to read the damn thing before passing it.
If that thing goes down tommorow, the screaming and whining is going to be epic. It will be the best day ever listening to those assholes whine. It will be better than Obama losing. As great as Obama losing will be, you will wake up the next morning and have to face the reality of Romney being President. But this will have no such reality. It will be pure unmitigated schadenfreude.
Remember how nice the schadenfreude was when Kerry lost? I can't imagine how much nicer that would have been if Bush hadn't won. Tomorrow should be fun.
They histrionics and hyperbole are going to be epic. America will no longer be a democracy. The dark night of fascism will have finally fallen. Children will be thrown out into the streets to die before day's end. America will from then on be ruled by a robed junta of radical right wing tea baggers.
And I forgot, Racism!!!
Well of course racism. I mean, that's a given, right?
Duh. It was racist that someone even dared aske Pelosi if the mandate was constitutional.
It's racist that we're even having an election in November.
Exactly. Notice how the unracist Democrats didn't have a primary?
And I forgot, Racism!!!
The sad thing is they will completely ignore how Thomas voted.
He's not black. Not really. He's some white guy in blackface. Has to be, the way he votes.
You know what was even better about the Kerry loss? Daschle lost too. That was some sweet, sweet icing on the cake.
It's not the schadenfreude for me. Not this time. If this law stands, the end of this country will be etched in stone.
You're being histrionic, you big girl. This country is already doomed.
Probably. But an upholding of this superbly stupid law would confirm it, once and for all.
That is why liberals are panicking. They for the first time in their life might actually face a world where there is a limit of federal power, where not every good idea can be some day implemented.
I just hope the whole law gets thrown out. That's the only way we really get a win.
Killing the mandate is the most important thing. That is the question of federal power. The rest hinges on severability which is less important.
Killing the mandate while sparing the preexisting condition crap is going to cause the worst result, an inevitable death spiral into an NHS-style system.
I'll take another Wickard ruling over that, thank you.
No. Upholding the mandate means the end of limited government, even in theory. That's profoundly dangerous, behind the healthcare disaster that will follow.
Upholding the mandate means the end of limited government, even in theory.
Limited govt != enumerated powers doctrine
State govts can pass as many mandates as they want because they're not subject to EPD. So I don't think it's as fundamental a change as you seem to think.
Also, it could be the scenario some have floated where Kennedy joins the leftists voting to uphold and Roberts switches sides so he can write the majority opinion to be as narrow as possible. So there may be some wiggle room left for the EPD even if they uphold Obamacare.
If the federal government can do anything, whether or not the states can do anything won't matter. We're well and truly screwed if a majority of Congress or even just a president can do whatever they/he want.
That's not what's at issue here though. There are still constitutional restrictions on what the fed gov can't do, even if the EPD finally gives up the ghost tomorrow.
I think EPD is a good thing but I'm not willing to launch into the brave new world of NHS style health care system just to avoid pulling the plug on the EPD respirator.
I'm sorry, but that's just not correct. If the federal government has general police powers, there's very little it can't do. I don't want socialism at all, but I also don't want the last vestiges of limited government to be gone.
You're wrong to assume that we can have limited government without retaining the concept of the Constitution being a grant of limited and enumerated powers. Without that, it's game over. Just a matter of time. Look at the UK.
Dude, state governments don't have enumerated powers and never have. And the federal govt has, for all practical purposes, had police powers for 75 years. We never got to quite this point before just because no one had the chutzpah to pass a bill like this before, not because anyone thought there was something the federal govt didn't have enumerated powers to do.
I don't like the implications any more than you do, but the alarmism is not justified.
We never got to quite this point before just because no one had the chutzpah to pass a bill like this before, not because anyone thought there was something the federal govt didn't have enumerated powers to do.
Uhm, Prohibition? Someone during that whole anti-alcohol thing at least went through the motions of passing a constitutional amendment before the feds banned the wholesale consumption of a legal product.
Tulpa you are living in the past. There will never be an NHS style system. There is no money for it. The time to create such a system was the 1960s not now. You will never again see the creation of such a system anywhere in the world.
You don't need money for an NHS system, just a docile population willing to put up with horrible service as long as it's "free". It may look more like Cuba's system than Britain's but either way not a good thing.
Put down the crack pipe Tulpa. People in Britain before the NHS had never had much health care of any kind. Britain was actually a lot poorer than people realize. They were willing to settle for the NHS because they had never had anything different. Americans in contrast have had and do have the best health care in the world. No Cuba style system will ever be created.
So because Britain was poor when they instituted NHS (true) that means that when we become poor we won't.
And Britain was a relatively wealthy country before WW2. So it's not like people "never had anything better".
You don't need money for an NHS system, just a docile population willing to put up with horrible service as long as it's "free". It
On this specific point I agree with Tulpa. I (we) have been arguing socialized medicine on this board for... ever, and it's been said a bazillion times. A coverage mandate costs $0. It only costs money when you actually try to provide care. Legislation isn't in the business of providing care. It's in the business of passing mandates.
I think the Republicans could (and probably would) repeal the preexisting conditions if the alternative was the death spiral.
So would the Democrats. The insurance companies wouldn't exactly take bankruptcy sitting down. They give campaign cash too.
No Dem would be caught dead taking money from the insurance companies and then trying to repeal the ban on discrimination over preexisting conditions. It would be electoral suicide. No amount of campaign cash is worth that.
You are a loon Tulpa. But you make up for it by being paranoid and stupid. The Dems take millions from insurance companies. Why do you think they loved the mandate so much? And the insurance companies are a huge part of the economy. Congress Dem or Republican is going to let those companies go broke. The pre-existing condition ban will go.
Yes, I know they take money from insurance companies. But the combination of taking that money AND siding with the insurance companies on a single, easily understandable issue where the populace is vastly against the insurance companies, would be electoral suicide.
They could at least sell the vote for the mandate as being a necessary compromise for the preexisting condition thing. How are they going to sell the vote against the preexisting condition thing?
How are they going to sell the vote against the preexisting condition thing?
By explaining that it was either that or cause another 2008 financial meltdown and the evil Justice Scalia gave them no choice.
I think the Republicans could (and probably would) repeal the preexisting conditions if the alternative was the death spiral.
The Dems would filibuster and the prez would never sign the repeal (be it BO or MR). The preexisting condition thing is too popular.
SS/Medicare have been on a death spiral for decades and no one would dare touch them.
SS/Medicare have been on a death spiral for decades and no one would dare touch them.
They touch them all of the time. They did a major overhall in the 1980s. And they haven't been in a death spiral yet, since we still have enough money to pay for them. SS only went in the red recently.
since we still have enough money to pay for them.
No, we have a bunch of IOUs from the fed govt to itself. That's not money.
We are paying them right now aren't we? The total cost doesn't exceed our revenues do they? Yes and no. So yes we are paying for them now. As I said, SS just recently went red.
How long ago it went red is irrelevant. The fact is we are diverting money from the general spending (which is already, of course, in deficit) to finance SS (through a Rube Goldberg contraption of Treasury bond exchanges to preserve appearances).
There will never be an NHS style system
All cost problems can be solved by queues.
I just hope the whole law gets thrown out. That's the only way we really get a win.
As I get older and wiser, I make fewer political predictions (Biden 2016!) but I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring.
Because of the massive, Gordian complexity of this law, the SCOTUS ruling will be equally complex.
Without writing a 2000 word comment, in essence, think of it as a massive, complex cancer surgery, where the doctors attempt to get a tumor and tendrils out of the body. Despite their best efforts they leave some small pieces in here and there, meaning that the cancer will grow back, you just hope you die of some other natural cause before the cancer grows back and takes you.
I agree.
Plus, it will actually make Romney more tolerable, I think. Knowing that he'll never lead the way to get rid of Obamacare will be a daily reminder of his suck, if it's still there.
As great as Obama losing will be, you will wake up the next morning and have to face the reality of Romney being President.
After the election we get a good 2 months and a week or two of Obama being a loser and Romney not in office.
Good times are just around the corner. I think i will take November and December off this year....it is not as if I can make any money in this economy anyway.
Justice Scalia turned into a heckler. He interrupted Verrilli 26 times, his opponent Paul Clement only twice. No wonder the argument sounded rough at times
I don't think he understands what a heckler is. I mean, by that standard my doctoral examination panel was a bunch of hecklers. How dare they ask me hard questions and not let me bullshit them!
You weren't trying to give the starving masses healthcare. Verrilli was doing god's work. The Supreme Court became America's heckler when they agreed to hear the case.
Elgin has a number of the sort of people who like to turn American Terriers into vicious animals that are a danger to the community. I'm (formerly bigbigslacker) usually the last person to be a cop defender, but in this case I'll go there. The Elgin police are decent. It wouldn't be in any libertarian's best interest for me to describe on a public forum why I say that. Comparing Elgin to Aurora, Il is reasonable, but Elgin is the definite worse of the two as far as the sort of "characters" that live there. Comparing to wealthy Naperville is just silly.
This sounds right to me. Also much better name.
"UFO" at the bottom of the Baltic in interfereing with electronic equipment used by divers:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sci.....-200m.html
My first guess was that it was a pile of quarried slate being shipped over water, hence the soot, too.
My first guess is that it's exactly what the fuck the divers say it is: a spacecraft from an alien civilization. I can think of no alternative explanation, and as far as I'm concerned, the science is settled.
My computer model said so.
Given it's location, it could be pieces of a sunken Russian nuclear submarine.
It's the plug that holds all the water in. Of course it interferes with electronic devices -- it's a magnetic plug.
I love the mystery of this but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a guerrilla marketing tactic for a film to be released soon.
I love the mystery of this but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a guerrilla marketing tactic for a film to be released soon.
If so, whoever dreamt it up is a marketing genius.
The very fact that the world's militaries aren't on this like stink on rice is enough for me to think it has to be something of natural origin.

Yeah, only the damn racist democrats.

Sorry to see Nora Ephron die. She wrote great dialog, which no one does anymore.
I always confuse her with Erma Bombeck.
Airline Crash Deaths Too Few To Make New Safety Rules Pay
More than a decade has passed since the last major-airline accident on U.S. soil. That's great news for aviation companies and their passengers -- and a complication for rule makers trying to improve flight safety.
The benefits of aviation rules are calculated primarily on how many deaths they may prevent, so the safest decade in modern airline history is making it harder to justify the cost of new requirements.
"If anyone wants to advance safety through regulation, it can't be done without further loss of life," said William Voss, chief executive officer of the Alexandria, Virginia-based Flight Safety Foundation.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/.....s-pay.html
Clearly then someone needs to crash a plane. Regulators' power and livelihoods depend on it.
So long as the TSA is "guarding" airlines, another terrorist is bound to get through eventually.
This is an Onion article right? The regulators have a success they can point to (regardless if it's deserved or not)and the problem is they can't make any more rules? I'm sure there's some make work stimulus job for these regulators.
What a perfect description of the regulatory mindset.
Medical Examiner: Causeway Cannibal Not High On Bath Salts
http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012.....ath-salts/
Whoops. Well, the retractions should come shortly and quickly end this little panic.
So I can go back to consuming Mr. Bubble?
Only if you want to test positive for THC, you deviant.
Really? What the hell is Mr. Bubble made of, anyway?
Hog semen.
Glycerin and hemp?
Even worse. He had pot in his system.
Summer '12 -- The Great Munchie Scare Commences
LOL. Reason so called this one.
Well, that was bound to happen since Reason used, um, what's that word I'm looking for..?
Pixels?
Well, that was bound to happen since Reason used, um, what's that word I'm looking for..?
Bath salts?
In fairness to Drudge, who had been whacking us over the head with bath salt stories, this is the top article right now in bright red. I'm sure all the legacy media outfits will do the same.
I guess BO won't sign that bath salts ban into law then.
Ephron apparently figured out on her own who Deep Throat was and told anyone and everyone who asked her for years. She was not only smarter than her shit head journalist ex husband but funnier too.
"Antarctic ice shelves aren't melting at all, according to new data"
Not possible, I was assured that the "science is settled".
This is weird cuz I never heard that Antarctica was melting.
Alarmists always focus on the Arctic ice cap and Greenland....and the skeptics, like me, would always point out that Antarctica is not warming.
But the Antarctic ice actually matters since it's not already floating.
yeah. I have tried to explain that to enviornmentalists.
I even tell them to measure a glass with water and an ice cube in it then measure it after the ice melts. and how the water level is the same.
They ain't buying it.
Watching baseball with people who hate baseball
"2047 World Series, only on HGTV"
Excellent.

REASON, SHILL FOR BIG WARMING, IGNORES MELTING NORTH POLE!!

It is hard to exaggerate how dramatic this is. Perhaps not since the felling of America's vast forests in the 19th century, or possibly since the razing of China's and western Europe's great forests a thousand years before that, has the world seen such a spectacular environmental change. The consequences for Arctic ecosystems will be swingeing.
SWINGEING!! Fear the swinge!
Complete with cool animated graphic of the ice-shrinkage, benefits for global shipping (always finding a bright side, those brits!)=

I wouldn't describe either of those events as apocalyptic.
I wouldn't describe either of those events as apocalyptic.
You forget John, the rise of human civilization is an Apocalypse.
So we're all living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? Not just our brothers and sisters in Detroit?
I wouldn't describe either of those events as apocalyptic.
Ahh, but were they *swingeing*?
("large, immense, powerful, scathing")
Think 'Michael Moore'.
Also, John, you're not a Panda or Bald Eagle, so your opinion is null and void.
And Sad Panda is very Sad.

Can we gambol in those new swingeinged ecosystems?
New word for me. Blast those Brits and their neologistic talents!
Did anyone post anything on the Brett Kimberlin thing? The Maryland appeals court watered down the gag order against the blogger (Walker), basically letting him criticize Kimberlin again. And *someone* called a SWAT team to Walker's house.
Antarctic ice shelves aren't melting at all, according to new data, which is based on the first ever direct measurement of the ice, and not on computer models.
I found this really surprising, mostly because I didn't know anyone was worried about East Antarctica melting. Here's to some good news.
Who you gonna believe, the models or your lyin' eyes?

TERRE HAUTE... INDIANA ANTARCTICA
I saw the latest episode of Deadliest Carch last night. Those crab fishing captains all said the winter ice was the most extensive any of them have seen in their 30+ year careers. So much for melting polar caps.
Please tell me this isn't legit:
Muslims stone protesters in Michigan.
It isn't legit. Well, unless you think the Blaze would describe anti-globalization protester toss bottles at cops as "stoning" them. Barring further evidence, it just looks like asshole protester behavior.
I just watched it twice. Can't see anything but garbage thrown, either.
Waterworld won't happen even if the ice does melt.
The Earth is a big place. If all the currently-frozen water on the planet were to melt and run into the oceans, global sea level would rise by approximately 300 feet.
I live 450 feet above sea level, and most of area I live in is well above the 300 foot mark, a fair bit of it more than twice that.
