Today I Learned the Awesome Traffic Power of Reddit's "Today I Learned" (TIL) Section
Over the course of the past 24 or 48 hours, an excellent ReasonTV video, "How Sex Offender Registries Fail Us," vaulted to the top of our "Most Popular Stories" tote board, which is generally automatically based on site traffic.
The video, which was released back on March 14, 2012, was mentioned at Reddit.com's "Today I Learned" page, where readers submit curious facts that they just stumbled across. Here's the entry, posted by user etihw2 and proud recipient of over 1,330 up votes by fellow Reddit users:

If you're not familiar with Reddit, you ought to be (especially, maybe, its Libertarian page). It's a great site where readers post links to content on every topic conceivable and then vote things up or down based on their reactions. It's long been a major traffic source for Reason.com and ReasonTV but far more important, it's one of the places that makes teh internet the glorious series of tubes that it is truly is - a haven of wide-ranging and user-generated delights, marvels, and treasures, all pulled together in a series of easy-to-use-and-sort pages. It's been around since 2005; read more about it another of the web's defining institutions, Wikipedia.
Here's the vid by the way, along with the original text:
Reason.tv: How Sex Offender Registries Fail Us
Tracy Oppenheimer | March 14, 2012
You can be put on the sex offender registry for urinating in public, having consensual sex as a teenager or even for "sexting." And in California, once you are on the list, you are on it for life.
The registry has become the medieval stocks of the 21st century and, as attorney Janice Bellucci says, once someone is on the registry, "he is treated like a leper".
There are violent sexual predators who should be on the registry for life, but 95% of those on the registry never commit another sex offense, according to the California Department of Corrections.
Reason.tv spoke to a registrant ruined by the registry. His crime: having sex with his teenage girlfriend.
"It was actually illegal for me to be anywhere near her for three years," he says, "but she waited for me. And I waited, too."
They are still married today, 10 years after he was convicted.
Harsher laws for registrants continue to be passed while proposed reforms to the registry have struggled to gain ground.
California Assemblymember Tom Ammiano introduced a bill for a tiered registry in January, but it was defeated thanks to opponent's scare tactics.
"There have always been stories, especially this summer, about child predators in the area," says Mission Viejo Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht, who introduced a bill banning sex offenders from public parks and beaches.
Bellucci is going to keep fighting for reform. "We're not thinking from a logical and rational place," she says, "instead we are acting from fear."

You know who else complained about having too much juice...
Nicole and Ron?
I guess Kato managed with the recommended daily allowance.

I can't imagine such a thing. Also, the Golden Girls secretly hated homosexuals.
Really?!?! Why am I just now finding out about this??? I must make it my mission to inform the world!!!
Before Digg invaded, reddit had a collection of intelligent and thoughtful posters. Post Digg, it's now full of dipshits. I use it now to find the occasional link.
I can't see a mention of Digg without thinking of the Digg-Reddit War comic strip:

I need to amend my earlier gripe. Reddit has one good thing going for it:

A very delightful and poignant essay of Andre Roussimoff and his legendary imbibery.
Also, Reddit's Infamous "Cum Box".
A more visual representation.
OK, I'm still not absolutely sure what just happened to me at those links but DON'T*EVER*DO*THAT*AGAIN!
The fuck? That was fucking disturbing.
I hate you so much right now.
"If you're not familiar with Reddit, you ought to be (especially, maybe, its Libertarian page). "
Uh, no you shouldn't. Reddit in general is kinda retarded, and this counts quadruply for the political subreddits. It's an idiotic circlejerk that can make anyone into a statist.
Hate reddit so much, but can't look away.
Anarcho capitalism subreddit is pretty good, but most of the others aren't worth a damn.
Anarchism subreddit is an awesome rain wreck of statists who think they aren't.
Speaking of things that can get your name on a sex offender registry, in college, I sat next to a Korean kid in Spanish 101 who liked to grope himself during exams.
Maybe most people are already aware of boxing's horrible subjectivity, but what the fuck happened last night? A split decision even to Manny would have been pretty bad, but to go to Bradley was just atrocious. I can't believe I shoveled out $65 for that. Worse than Floyd's cheap shot against Victor Ortiz.
You paid to watch it?
The fight was a good fight, and plenty of booze at the house already. But just as with the Mayweather/Ortiz fight, the viewer was robbed and there's no recourse for a refund. I don't mind paying for fights that have promise.
Holy shit boxing PPVs are expensive.
June 8 Friday Funnies is the 3rd most viewed story on Reason?
I think it is the most viewed of the past 7 days or some shit.
Not the 3rd most viewed of all time.
Should also point out that you have to click through to see the comic.
Most articles here don't need a click through to read.
On-Topic:
The Sex Offender Registry is nothing more than a Scarlet Letter. If the crime they've committed is so heinous that they need to be segregated from polite society then impose longer sentences.
Even murderers don't have to register anywhere once they've paid their debt to society.
I know reddit can be stupid sometimes, but here's a case when it's readers get things right.
It links to this, which just further proves my point on a rather important matter.
I swear, I hate these motherfuckers more than I can even put into words. Look at the little, itty-bitty bottles that run $10-$12 each. They put about $.50 tops into raw materials, and that likely counts the jar. Yet, hipsters from the 2 Boroughs* will take the train to this store so they can finish stocking their fridge.**
*To the hipster, there is no NYC outside of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
**After their artisanal mayonnaise purchase, their fridge will consist of:
1: 5-pack of PBR tallboy cans
2: vegan chocolate bar
3: a jar of heroin- and crack-tree honey from Brooklyn rooftop colonies
4: pack of snow-balls
For those of you that are under the misconception that these are not hipster fuckhead douchebags, I humbly give you their facebook page.
Go ahead and link over to their "chef's" page.*
*I use the term "chef" rather loosely. Because if you think making mayonnaise is a job for a chef instead of moderately to severely developmentally disabled people, then you need to have your head examined.
Heh, you do like to go on about that mayonnaise.
... Snow-balls?
They're only there ironically.
Ah.
I posted on the hipster bee keeping bullshit the other day. These losers don't even make decent foodies. The honey is only as good as the nectar the bees get. I can't imagine how nasty the honey these poor bees living on blooms from weeds growing through sidewalks are making must taste.
And now mayonnaise? Every time I think I can't hate these people any more they prove me wrong.
The thing you have to remember about hipsters is they take any endeavor and dumb it down to the most retarded level possible. The ancient and noble art of farming become rooftop gardening and bee keeping. Music becomes playing the ukelele. A hipster couldn't play an intelligent instrument like a guitar, violin or mandolin. No that would require some work and talent. So instead a hipster plays the most retarded instrument imaginable so he can say look at me and not have to actually do anything. Now they have taken the noble art of cooking and reduced it to making mayonnaise.
The ukulele can be awesome of the player knows what they're doing:

Just so everybody knows, I just made a 4 oz jar of crushed red pepper aioli in about 10 minutes completely by hand. That included collecting the eggs from my coop, prep and cleanup time, and all of it was done by hand and I was teaching my children how to do it and cooking breakfast at the same time. If I had equipment, I could have made a gallon of it in 10 minutes.
That's why I hate these motherfuckers.
They reduce every activity to its most retarded level and then expect everyone to praise them for it. This is what happens when a "every gets a trophy" generation grows up. Past generations would have gone into the condiment business making mustard, mayonnaise and the whole bit. Or they would have developed some new formula they could patent (see Heinz 57). But these retards do something any six year old could do with a little adult supervision and they expect to be praised and told how special they are.
I confess to making mulberry preserves, from the mulberry tree in our yard.
Canning fruit pretty much involves mashing it up, mixing it with pectin, and putting it in cans.
That and making sure everything absolutely sterile. There is a bit of skill involved.
Banjos and I have a nice canning operation going. The pickles were a struggle, but I think I didn't do the ice bath right. Spears were not as crisp as I would have liked, but the chips are pretty solid. Chili was really good too. But for the money, I have to say my salsas are about as good as you will ever find. (I guess I'll find out how good it really is at the county fair this fall.) We haven't done any fruit yet. We're waiting on everything to come in season out here first.
Gotta get my wife canning again - her salsa is the best.
It's taken me a couple of batches to get my canned salsa right. Before, I'd cold-can it and it was good for a couple of months in the fridge at the most, but it was absolutely wonderful. Maintaining consistency after pulling the jars out of the pressure cooker was the toughie. I have to say, though, that this latest batch is fantastic. Which gets me thinking...
[checks pantry]
Shit! Only three jars left.
You got anything for pickled okra?
The key with pickling okra is to use a little more coriander than you would normally use and to put a fresh hot pepper (cut with seeds) in each jar. Also, make sure you don't boil the brine too long.
That'll make it come out juuuuuuuuust right.
To be fair, mayo is #1 on the list of Stuff White(and only White) People Like.

Like I needed a website to tell me Wilford Brimley is a bad ass.
4chan is where humor is born. Reddit is where it goes to be slowly beaten to death.
Sooo...
Should we go to the original post and haze all the new kids in the comments?
Reddit is an echo chamber, practically by design.
Try expressing a contrary opinion there sometime.
Reddit makes my eyes bleed.
I'm curious as to what started the whole hipster bee-keeping thing anyway.
Do they think they're saving the world from colony collapse disorder? Or is it that they can't find any honey that isn't fake chinese honey in the grocery store.
They read about all the bees dying.
Colony collapse disorder.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.....e_disorder
Here's the about page for one of them. Do they not realize that "three-mile radius" is different for bees than it is for their fixed-gear bikes? Bees need to land from time to time, and they also tend to follow each other. That's called a "swarm," and it's the way they almost exclusively travel. Therefore, these bees are much more likely to gather nectar from nearby trees and flowering plants, which IIRC means they are getting their nectar from the few parks in Brooklyn...that are usually inhabited by kids and their parents trying to play.
I can only conjecture as to the start of the phenomenon, but I'm sure it had something to do with one of these hipster fucks seeing a beekeeper outfit on a mannequin in a Salvation Army Thrift Store while back at mom and dad's in Connecticut begging for more money so he can continue to "contribute" to NYC culture.
The bees are also getting "nectar" from soda.
Also, if you're looking for feminist and politically correct horrors beyond what jezebel or even microagressions can do, http://reddit.com/r/SRSDiscussion is a good place to start.

found this on Slashdot.
You know a site that has editorial control and puts out stuff in a readable fashion....Rather then vomiting text and thumbnails all over my screen.
It seems like your real body remains more or less slack even while you're moving around and fighting and whatnot in the Metaverse - that's what I'm waiting for. Until then I'm OK with just pressing buttons and mashing keys.
All you need is r/wtf
