White House Visitor Logs Show Barack Obama Has Spent More Time With George Clooney Than DEA Chief Michele Leonhart
Investor Warren Buffett and actor George Clooney have logged more face time with President Barack Obama than the person tasked with executing the President's war on drugs, White House visitor records show.
Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Michelle M Leonhart has met with Obama at the White House only once, back in June 2011. Buffett meanwhile, has met with Obama at the White House four times since 2010, and Clooney has met with the President twice.
This data comes courtesy of a new searchable database built by the Washington Post that pulls information from data.gov.
Leonhart, who served as acting DEA administrator under President George W. Bush, was renominated to that position by Obama on Feb. 2, 2010. Yet according to White House visitor logs, Leonhart did not meet with the president before or after her nomination. Instead, she met with Vice President Joe Biden's Chief of Staff Alan Hoffman on April 8, 2010, and again with Sarah Coleman, an Office of National Drug Control Policy staffer, on Feb. 10, 2010.
So it's fair to ask: Is the White House ignoring the DEA? One former DEA staffer told Reason, "They're not paying much attention."
Leonhart has visited the White House only three times since Obama took office and the ONDCP's office five times, which suggests she spends far less time communicating face-to-face with White House staffers than do the heads of other agencies. For instance: Rajen Anand, head of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, has logged 14 visits to the White House; FDA Director Margaret A. Hamburg, meanwhile, has logged 69 visits to the White House—three of them with Obama.
The logs also suggest that the Obama administration is less interested in the DEA than former administrations. One former DEA staffer told Reason that former DEA Administrator Karen Tandy was at the Bush White House "all the time," and that Leonhart visited the White House more often during the final years of the Bush administration.
When asked if the visitor logs contained the full extent of Leonhart's visits to the White House, and if Leonhart had met personally with Obama before he sent her nomination to the Senate, a DEA spokesperson told Reason, "I'm not going to get into specifics but I can tell you as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, it is not unusual for [Leonhart] to meet with senior officials—across the government—on matters of law enforcement as often as necessary, including meetings and briefings at the White House."
Other top staffers from the DEA have visited visited White House executive branch offices just a handful of times, according to visitor logs: DEA Chief Counsel Wendy Goggin has visited the White House once; DEA Deputy Administrator Thomas Harrigan has visited the Drug Czar's office four times; DEA Chief of Intelligence Rodney Benson has visited the ONDCP once; Preston L. Grubbs, who heads the DEA's administrative support division, and DEA CFO Frank Kalder have each met with the Office of Management and Budget once.
According to a New York Times report, the White House visitor logs do not "cover Camp David or Air Force One," and often omit politically "sensitive" meetings, such as those with potential Supreme Court nominees.

The cops' unions are already in line. So how exactly does the DEA pay off cronies and raise campaign cash?
I didn't think so. Of course Obama doesn't give a shit.
Moreover, let's say Obama did take steps to scale back the drug war.
Will that make the proponents of legalization who generally vote for Democrats vote in significantly greater numbers?
What about the proponents of prohibition who will be enraged; will they be more likely to go out and pull a lever for a Republican?
The fact is Obama isn't going to rock any boat unless it's going to help him net a large number of votes. He probably thinks he'd lose votes, particularly because he lacks the power and the guts to stand up to the civil service and if they turn against him he can kiss another 4 years in the White House.
Like Nixon to China, it will take a Republican to scale back the drug war.
the story is not the drug war; it's about a clear window, as if there was doubt, as to who Obama is. He would rather hang out with Hollywood types and play the Mr Cool role as opposed to doing his damn job.
He probably thinks he'd lose votes, yes.
Which means that he probably thinks that libertarians are outnumbered by our opposites.
And I'd agree
""The Administration opposes gender discrimination in all forms, but the end result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine the motivations behind a very personal and private decision," White House deputy press secretary Jamie Smith told ABC News' Jake Tapper in a statement Wednesday evening. "The government should not intrude in medical decisions or private family matters in this way."

Then you're withdrawing Obamacare, right?
Interesting. Apparently, abortion is more holy than anti-discrimination now.
"would ban abortions on the basis of gender or race, while also making the coercion of a woman to obtain a sex- or race-based abortion illegal."
I thought coercing a woman to have an abortion, period, was already illegal.
Does leaving fake bankruptcy forms around the house count (yet)?
"The government should not intrude in medical decisions or private family matters in this way."
You missed the obvious. Obama's smarter than you think. In this way... That's the out.
It does turn the "women's rights" rhetoric upside down, doesn't it. Essentially, the proposal is pointing out that, in the name of protecting women against discrimination, we are authorizing women to discriminate. Sooner or later, the inherent intolerance of our anti-discrimination laws starts to consume the tolerance they are supposed to foster.
It does seem a bit incongruent, doesn't it?
the women's advocates don't care about the details..they just care about abortion being as unfettered as possible. My wife believes in choice but only to a point, say within the first trimester or so. And definitely not for the purposes of sex selection.
Can someone explain to me why sex selective abortion is any different that aborting the child because it has downs syndrome? How is it any different that "just because I feel like it" for that matter? Either aborting the child is wrong or it isn't. The reasoning is irrelevant beyond the mother's life being in danger as well.
That's what I was thinking. ISex selective abortion may be a dumb thing to do, but so what? If abortion is legal, it is legal (as I think it should be).
This is also a terrible idea because it will require people to somehow divine the intentions of the person seeking the abortion. Otherwise she can just say that it is not for one of the forbidden reasons and go ahead.
ISex is a new Apple product, by the way.
Well can you blame him? I don't think I could stand being in the same room as that witch for more than five minutes.
This is the guy who hired Sibileus and Elana Kegan. Sorry, his witch tolerance goes beyond that of mere mortal.
Not to mention lobbying mightily to have Debbie "Fighting the Frizzies: Details At 11!" Wasserman-Schultz installed as head of the DNC.
"that witch"
Michelle?
"that witch"
Michelle?
No, "that mooch"
When you're already sympatico on policy, there's no need for words.
^ Gold Star^
He gave them the jackboots. What ? Were they just supposed to sit around and polish them? They dont need him to tell them directly to put our necks under them.
Exactly. It's not like she had to go plead her case for more money, he just upped their budget because he doesn't want to deal with it.
E-mail? Telephone?
Or can the president only conduct business face-to-face, due to security concerns or whatever?
I agree with this. Why can't he just text Clooney, or skype him? Aren't they facebook friends? Can't they just subscribe to eachother's twitter feed?
The reason that George Clooney needs to visit so often is ?
They don't call Michelle a beard for nothing.
Then why isn't Tom Cruise's name isn't on the log at all.
NTTAWWT
Maybe he is not Obama's type.
They can't both be bottoms. Or can they?
Sure they can.
Possibly NSFW.
That reminds me, I'm overdue for a trip to the proctologist
Wtf that is one crooked ass two headed dick
I think they prefer being referred to as "Joe" and "Mika."
Ha! Bingo.
Probably the OBL movie.
Once the Horsemen of the Apocalypse are released, they don't need any micro-managing.
"And Dominion of the Earth had been granted unto them."
There's probably a section in the daily Executive Briefing that detailing how many young men that look like they could be President Obama's son are now in prison for possession of verboten chemicals.
No wonder Obama is silent on all of the stories of police killing young black men who were sitting quietly in their car had crack in their sock.
George Cloony is a much more important person than Leonhart. I would spend more time meeting with him too.
What does he need to meet with the head of the DEA? She's already doing what he wants her to do, right?
This was my thought. He meets with Clooney because he's cultivatin' relationships. The DEA is on autopilot. Nothing to see here, move along.
Maybe the lack of meetings is for plausible deniability. Or maybe he really, truly does not know what's going on -- and does not care.
Quasi-OT:
Face-attacker's mother: My son 'was no zombie'
I dunno, did he spent any time in Miami's "Little Haiti"?
And I suspect that until Armando Aguilar possesses a degree in something like Pharmacopsychiatry, he needs to shut the fuck up with his speculations.
Or why don't they do some tests and figure out what drugs he was on and then use their real names instead of continuing to use the stupid "bath salts" name. He might as well say "hepped up on goofballs".
As long as the drug money is flowing smoothly up to the top echelons, there's probably no need for a face-to-face.
It's probably just as well; if he had her over to the White House too often he would probably just end up inducting her into the Choom Gang and smoking a big fattie with her.
This is one time I have to really disagree with Reason - not sure why this is a 'problem' or bad. Empower George Clooney all he wants - hell we already know that's happening. Empowering the DEA scares the hell out of me. If he handn't met with her at all it'd be even better.
Um, how about holding her accountable for the DEA's actions? Remember, it's a "War On Drugs." Shouldn't he meet with his drug people once a week to determine how many people they are going to incarcerate/kill that week?
No. If he never meets with her, when she fucks up spectacularly in a fast and furious manner, he can plausibly deny knowing anything about it.
Yeah, plausable denability was going to be my comment. You beat me to it.
Darn, I should've read the whole thread before posting.
This.
The question of why the prez is ignoring his subordinates running wild with no supervision, while perfectly legitimate, is much less sexy than the alternative.
They are TOP (WO)MEN, and so do not need supervision.
So? The Goof Off In Chief has also had more face time with race baiter and intellectual giant Al Sharpton.
So it's fair to ask: Is the White House ignoring the DEA? One former DEA staffer told Reason, "They're not paying much attention."
Don't know how useful these records are in the age of e-mail....or you know the telephone.
To be honest it exposes how little the president alone really does....our government is run on remote control auto pilot, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
It's a bad thing since there really is no accountability to the people in that case. The claim that the DEA, for example, is run with the consent of the governed assumes that they are subjugated to an elected official.
Unless Biden is behind the scenes giving them their marching orders, than means we need BO to keep them on a leash.
