Nancy Pelosi Defends Medical Marijuana Dispensaries In Face of Obama Administration Crackdown
Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) released a statement yesterday condemning the Obama administration's crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries and advocating for the drug's medical properties:
"Access to medicinal marijuana for individuals who are ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is both a medical and a states' rights issue. Sixteen states, including our home state of California, and the District of Columbia have adopted medicinal marijuana laws – most by a vote of the people.
"I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California, and undermine a policy that has been in place under which the federal government did not pursue individuals whose actions complied with state laws providing for medicinal marijuana.
"Proven medicinal uses of marijuana include improving the quality of life for patients with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and other severe medical conditions.
"I am pleased to join organizations that support legal access to medicinal marijuana, including the American Nurses Association, the Lymphoma Foundation of America, and the AIDS Action Council.
"Medicinal marijuana alleviates some of the most debilitating symptoms of AIDS, including pain, wasting, and nausea. The opportunity to ease the suffering of people who are seriously ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is an opportunity we must not ignore.
"For these reasons, I have long supported efforts in Congress to advocate federal policies that recognize the scientific evidence and clinical research demonstrating the medical benefits of medicinal marijuana, that respects the wishes of the states in providing relief to ill individuals, and that prevents the federal government from acting to harm the safe access of medicinal marijuana provided under state law. I will continue to strongly support those efforts."
The statement follows the delivery of a petition signed by San Francisco residents asking Pelosi to speak out against Obama's medical marijuana crackdown. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) called the crackdown "bad politics and bad policy" last week.

Obama's own party is bucking him on this? Oh, this is getting interesting.
She's not the first to break ranks to protest her own seat.
I have to wonder if she sent a warning to Obama that she was going to do this.
"I'm going to pretend to criticize you. You know how it is. Nudge nudge, wink wink."
She's not the first to break ranks to protest her own seat.
Exactly what I was going to say.
Bitch Fight!
Whatever. We'll see
a) how far this goes
b) how long this lasts
Almanian's Predictions

I think you meant:
Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. Botox)
I thought was Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Undead)?
Would that make Obama a Night Elf?
That would mean he was Horde, so he'd either be a Troll, Orc, Goblin, Tauren, Goblin, or Blood Elf.
The Goblins are too capitalistic, so I don't think he'd be one of them. I can see him as a Blood Elf, though.
Obama to Pelosi: Are you serious?
Thread winner.
Too little, too late. Pelosi is still going to go out there and make sure all the good little Party Members vote for the DOJ and DEA's budget next year.
So, in that picture, is she smoking something or making an oral sex motion with her hand?
That's an image I could have done without. THANKS A LOT!
"This is the world smallest violin playing Hearts and Flowers for your ever eroding freedoms, thank you very much."
Sounds like someone just realized she's up for re-election this fall.

True, but CA voters were duped when they passed medical marijuana. They thought it was going to the type of patients above, but most prescriptions for it are for back pain, stress, etc.
People keep making unsubstantiated claims to that effect despite not being privy to any objective supporting evidence.
Until 2003 when the California Legislature passed the Medical Marijuana Program Act (AKA SB-420) which authorized dispensaries, less than 100,000 Californians claimed the law's protection. Today California NORML guestimates that there are between 750,000 and 1.125 million doing so.
I think all but a few fringe lunatics in California understand that with or without the law there's no one except some very sick people who can't obtain cannabis. There's really very little point in getting a doctor's rec in California anymore, except to be able to shop in a dispensary. That would be because those customers appreciate a wide variety of choices and the ones that offer customer service, not because they couldn't find a bag from an unauthorized vendor with very little effort. The $100 civil fine for petty possession < 1 oz pales in comparison to the almost $1000 that you'll pay if you get caught parking in a handicapped space.
If the California medicinal cannabis patient protection laws were to disappear without a trace at 9 AM tomorrow the malingering Spicolis that so offend those with limited brain activity would have headstash in hand by 9 A.M.
The only people that are duped are those that think that cannabis prohibition actually works as advertised.

My claim that people get pot prescriptions for things like headache, backache is stated here in this reason article:

QUOTE
Reinarman et al. found that "relief of pain, spasms, headache, and anxiety, as well as to improve sleep and relaxation, were the most common reasons patients cited for using medical marijuana."

To pass medical marijuana they billed it as help for dying cancer and AIDS patients. But that's not how it is being used. So voters were duped.
I agree that most people will get their pot one way or another, and I support efforts to drastically lower prison sentences for dealing it, and possession of small amounts.
I hate the argument that pot is cool, which seems to float in democrat and libertarian circles. It's not. It's just because it goes against the establishment that people think it's cool. Just wait when pot is legalized and Philip Morris starts growing it on a large scale, then SF hipsters will turn against it. It stinks, in my opinion.
People think pot is freedom, but when they get health problems, it's society's problem. Trust me, there are health risks to mega pot usage, such as there are for cigarettes -- it's just that we haven't found it yet.
Well, that's good enough for me. I always prefer to get my information from the assurances of random anonymous people who present unsubstantiated claims on the internet as if they were facts.
No Mr. Income Tax, you made the claim that "most" "prescriptions" are being made for "back pain" "stress" and "etc." You also made the claim that the voters of California were "duped" when they voted for the Compassionate Use Act, as if you're privy to the mindset of the 5,382,915 Californians.
With all due respect to Mr. Sullum, a survey of the patients at a single dispensary in one community in California is hardly definitive. The results would have been completely different had they surveyed the patients of WAMM.

We can't even definitively say how many Californians are claiming the protection of the law. Yet you seem to know what "most" recs are for.
I believe there are more patients claiming that protection who never set foot in a dispensary. IMO those are created for the purpose of supplying the malingering for the most part. The patients that you seem to deem worthy can't afford to pay their asking prices. One thing the truly sick tend to have in common is very little, if any income.
There's no central registry in California. You, Mr. Sullum, myself, and everyone else simply is not privy to that information, and I resent it when people who don't know what they're talking about act as if they do. You don't even know that there's no such thing as a prescription for cannabis in California.
Heck, everyone on the Internet is an effin' medical expert when it comes to medicinal cannabis and the mind of the body politic, why should you be any different?
Another basic fact of which your know it all self is apparently unaware is that smoking is not required to gain the benefits of cannabis, whether for medicinal need or just for enjoyment. Any potential health hazards due to smoking are not the hazards of cannabis, but of smoking.
Vaporization is proven safe, less expensive, and preferred by a margin of 7:1 in peer reviewed research published in 2007.

Of course if we really want to find out if smoking cannabis is unhealthy, we've got an island full of lifelong potheads about 600 miles east of Florida. They don't use drinking alcohol, smoke tobacco, and eat a very healthful diet to remove a large percentage of, if not all potential confounds. They've been smoking pot constantly since 1930 at least. There's no reason why it should be any mystery.
Remember to wish Tommy Chong a happy 74th birthday on May 24. You should be so lucky to be in 1/2 his physical shape or have 1/10 of his net worth when you're 74. I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait until April 2013 to wish Willie Nelson a happy 79th birthday.
Hmmm...Yeah, you're probably right, I guess the CA voters were played lake a bunch of chumps. Medical marijuana users and their doctors foisted this scam upon everybody so potheads could score some legal dope. They are nowhere near as ethical as the pill mill doctors dispensing completely safe and government approved oxycontin, roxicet, and dolophine like water from a fountain. I'm sure 99% of those oxy scripts are absolutely legit, regardless of the bullshit the lamestream media says about it. Besides, who but the dopers wouldn't want to pay 10x as much for a hard to get cesamet, or marinol anyway?

Well, Nancy Pelosi has expressly spoken in favor of "states' rights." And this as a criticism of President Obama, not as a snarky "you're a hypocrite" snipe at Republicans.
So when will the remaining End Times prophecies be fulfilled?
It means Nancy Pelosi is...a racist? "State's Rights" against a Black President? Holy shitsnacks.
"It's not a dog whistle when we say it."
So, basically, she had an "oh shit!" moment where she remembered that she represented San Francisco in Congress?

Proven medicinal uses of marijuana include improving the quality of life
"Offer not valid in humans with life-expectancies exceeding a year."
Fuck You, That's Why.
So, I expect the San Fran media and activists are going to be all over la Pelosi to introduce some damn legislation to protect state-legal med-pot from Barack's enforcers. Right?
Unregulated markets are unregulated.
"I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government"
Look at your pay-stub you stupid whore. YOU are the fucking federal government. YOU.
Access to medicinal marijuana for individuals who are ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is both a medical and a states' rights issue.
Did Nancy just out herself as a racist?
Denying relief to the suffering is just plain evil. Prohibitionists are consigned to Hades, and will sit a few rows back from Torquemada.
Pelosi actually uttered the phrase "stztes' rights"? And NOT with spittle flying from her mouth?
she was quoted as saying: "Stztes' rights, mah nizzas, fa shizza."
I would give a years' pay if she actually said that, on a live camera feed.
GREAT CAESER'S GHOST! Pelosi said something smart!
Really? Wow I never thought about it like that.
