A.M. Links: Newt Gingrich Still Has Secret Service Protection, India Tests Long-Range Missile, Eyeless Shrimp in the Gulf
-
Newt Gingrich still has Secret Service protection, which is costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a day. Ron Paul, meanwhile, is picking up delegates formerly supporting Rick Santorum, who suspended his campaign earlier this month.
- Russia's foreign minister condemned NATO for its timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan as being "artificial" and too rushed.
- India tested a long range missile that could carry a nuclear payload more than 3,000 miles.
- France's Nicholas Sarkozy may not survive even the first round of Presidential elections, due to start this weekend.
- Eyeless shrimp and other mutated marine life are being found in the Gulf of Mexico.
- Texas Governor Rick Perry says he's probably going to run for President in 2016. "If I decide to run for the presidency in 2016, I'll be way in before the summer of 2016; 2015, even," he said.

Cannabis Wine is catching on in California
Link
Every now and again I think of using a certain cousin of Cannabaceae Humulus lupulus (aka hops) in a batch of homebrew.
Every now and again I think of using a certain cousin of Cannabaceae Humulus lupulus (aka hops) in a batch of homebrew.
I can see that being a great addition to a beer. I can't help but think that wine + cannabis would taste like a mix of Kool-Aid and bong water.
Low temperature alcohol extracted marijuana has very little flavor. Hot extracted is very bitter, but tastes no worse to me than those vile super-IPAs that have taken over American craft brewing.
Drop it in the secondary and forget it for a month. I just might try it.
You have to breach the cell walls for full extraction, otherwise you are only dissolving what's on the exterior. 5 20-second rounds in a microwave, with a 1 minute cooling in-between has worked well for me.
Thanks for the tip.
What the sugarless one said about super-IPAs.
I like me some hops, but too much of what is being peddled from microbreweries as IPAs is borderline undrinkable.
Dumping more hops into a beer takes no skill. Balancing hops and malt, now, that's the trick.
+1
There's a local brewery here that the hipsters love, but I find the majority of their beers to be too hoppy.
Yes, it's boring and one-note. I go to some taprooms, and they'll have 24 taps and not a single hefeweizen/witbeer/wheatbeer, just hopped-to-death basic lagers that taste like Pine-Sol.
Huh. And here I thought it was juts me hating on the over-hopped.
hopped-to-death basic lagers
Extremely unlikely.
I do have a hopped-to-death "dopplebock"* in my kegerator right now. Malt/hop balance is amazing on it.
*quotes for CMS
You are a known over-hopper, robc. An enemy.
The three microbrewies we have here now are making super-hopped light-colored beers that I'm pretty sure are not ales. They are pretty awful to me. Or they are ales, I'm not poking around in the back after all.
They are almost assuredly ales. Way too much work to lager unless you commit to it.
You are a known over-hopper, robc. An enemy.
Actually, Im not. I make very few hoppy beers. And Ive never made anything like the grapefruit juice IPAs that some make.
And when I get up and running, the two everyday beers that I plan to make at first are a Hefeweizen and a Schwarbier. Not a lot of hops in either.
But there will be a couple of hop-forward beers in my seasonals.
My two staples are a pilsner that is lightly hopped, and a session ale that is only mildly bitter.
Achieving a pleasant balance is much more challenging than making a high octane brew with a ton of hops.
Any monkey can do that.
Schwarzbier.
I do have a lager that I recently made using some black patent, chocolate malt, roasted barley, and pumpkin.
Came out interesting. Not my greatest creation, but I won't dump it either.
Guinness Black Lager?
Ales can be light in color.
The thing that pisses me off about it is that IPAs were originally brewed so strong because they were meant to be shipped from Britain to India, and they mellowed out during the month(s) long journey.
Super IPAs are an even further abomination. Thanks for ruining craft brewing, hipsters!
And about 2 minutes after the first one was brewed, the Brits decided they liked them and stopped shipping them, because they enjoyed them fresh at home.
Really? I thought that it was returning soldiers who developed a taste for them that created demand at home.
The apocryphal story is that a shipwreck caused the IPAs to wash ashore in an english coastal town and they enjoyed them so much that the Burton breweries started selling them in England.
Thats bullshit, of course.
As is the soldier bit, because if they mellowed out, why would they want to drink the unmellow versions back at home?
The real answer is that they shipped most and sold some at home and it got popular and the ratio shifted, as they continued to ship them while also selling it at home.
And the realer answer is that the hop rate slowly rose over time for beers shipped to India.
This seems appropriate.
Interesting...
Thanks for that link. Good stuff.
IMHO the best beers are like the precious metals.

It would have to be a strong flavored brew, and some pretty good herb. Hash would probably be better since it would contribute less chlorophyll. Cheap mex would probably make it taste like grass clippings.
Now is this something that would contain meaningful levels of THC; i.e., would you get a buzz from it, apart from the alcohol?
I'm not expecting to get hella-stoned off one beer. But after three or four I'd expect my attention span to wander.
Nearly everyone who has tried it says it sucks hard.
Except the few delusion ones who refuse to believe that for reasons unsurprising to any of us.
Havent tried it myself.
Also the fact that an amount that would add any meaningful punch to a five gallon batch ain't cheap.
That's an expensive experiment.
I do have some cider jugs. Perhaps try racking off one gallon and trying it there.

If he's trying to argue that teens caught up in sex trafficking are being harmed, this may not be the way to do it.
I think Kristof meant to send that to Penthouse.
I'm still uncertain on how the method of advertising links to the fact that a 12 year old runaway got hooked up with a pimp by one of her "friends". Something stinks in the whole back tale. Well, that and the story of seeing her mom crying and putting up fliers. Its possible, but a damned close to "too good to check". It seems like a set piece to me.
Good ole Mel is at it again.
Mel Gibson shouted terrifying epithets at his houseguests during a rampage at his home in Costa Rica in December, according to a recording obtained by TheWrap.
It appears that the author is unfamiliar with the meaning of "epithet" and for that matter, with the meaning of "terrifying".

Why Don't Conservative Cities Walk?
A few of the comments:
Conservatives don't like walking because it increases their likelihood of interacting with other races or cultures or people they have decided "aren't as good as me".
Plus, then they couldn't show off their huge SUVs and enormous trucks that never have anything in them.
well, another thing to consider is that neither NYC nor Boston are in "open-carry" states with "stand your ground" gun laws. Perhaps people feel safer in NYC than in the states of the "wild, wild, west" South.
the denser the place the more liberal. And liberal means to be able to tolerate more people for the benefits of the city.
Liberals just really, really hate people who don't agree with them.
where's that in the article?...or were you not agreeing then?
Yes Spoonman, it is also whay they hate free markets, and freedom in generally. It is all so messy and untidy, with no one moving in the same direction - the betterment of humanity!
They love order, control, Liberals despise everything that smacks of freedom - it's all so messy, you see.
Is it any wonder that our modern liberals are the descendents of the early 20th century "progressive" movement - and their partners in crime, fascism and communism?
Neat, orderly, and as homogenous as possible, in thought and deed if not in race.
Everyone should be the same in the name of diversity.
needs moar theys plus bad-isms
How about the fact that Liberal cities are older and were built when walking was more important while Conservative cities are newer and built after the automobile was invented
But, but, that can't be! Newer cities have to be more progressive, since that's what progressive means! No, it has to be because anyone who disagrees with me is an intolerant racist who actively wants to ruin the Earth, and who's scared of getting shot by someone who has more guns then they do!
my daughter quickly noticed far fewer fat people in NYC. she believes its the walking
When can we expect to see her well documented scientific study?
what's this science you speak of?
She can't. NYC is full of fatties. Orifices' daughter just hangs with the hipster crowd, not your run-of-the-will, unwashed NYer.
my daughter quickly noticed far fewer fat people in NYC.
In Manhattan, sure. But wealth and obesity are negatively correlated.

Awww, shit. It procreated.
Los Angeles never struck me as "Conservative."
Last time I was at DC, the traffic was terrible. The same with Seattle and Chicago.
NYC is known for empty streets at rush hour. Why you can drive from Wall St to the Hamptons without seeing another car!
the denser the place the more liberal. And liberal means to be able to tolerate more people for the benefits of the city.
Despite the rules of logic, hating conservatives actually makes you more tolerant.
whadda mean? im progressive & i dont hate the elderly
"Tolerance" is one of those dog whistle words liberals have that just lets other liberals know they're part of the right club.
Plus, then they couldn't show off their huge SUVs and enormous trucks that never have anything in them.
Sure, some white people drive those. If you stand near a busy intersection in DC or other large cities, minorities are usually at the wheel of large SUVs.
That's only because of racism.
I never see cars in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx.
Staten Island? Oh, they drive but that's part of NJ.
How does a city walk?
Those comments are the same "What's the Matter with Kansas" bullshit that progs cling to like a tattered binky.
The culture of the suburbs and rural areas has very little to do with the available transportation networks. They're built on communitarian ideals, where criminal, parasitic, and socially deviant elements are much more threatening to the social fabric and the functioning of the town. Those vices are those of the city, which are better-equipped to handle them NOT because city-dwellers are more tolerant, but because up to a certain level of scale, both socially and economically, the cities can withstand those pressures.
Put a massive welfare class in your typical rural or suburban town, for instance, and they'd rapidly overtake the capacity of the town's resources to handle them. A massive criminal class would quickly overwhelm the law enforcement arm, and a socially deviant class would quickly undermine neighborly bonds.
Spergs like Tony and your typical Slate SWPL can't handle living away from the suburbs because they simply don't fit in culturally, and when they try, they inevitably end up becoming a divisive social element in the community that sets neighbors against each other.
That should read, "can't handle living in the suburbs"
Oh, Rick. That race for the White House will start in 2014. And a primary challenge to President Romney? Knock yourself out.
I really don't think Romney has a chance. The narcissist-in-chief has all sorts of push button demagogueric opportunities to energize his base to show up at the polls for.
The latest I-wanna-be-prez-to-deal-with-my-daddy-issues candidate the Republicans are fielding? Not so much.
Then again, in March of 2008 I was predicting that Al Gore would be taking the oath of office in Jan of 2009, so YMMV
Depends on the economy. If employment softens (as it shows signs of doing), the Eurozone rolls over (as it shows signs of doing), which will contagion over to us, deficit spending continues unabated (as it will), thus weakening the dollar and keeping gas and other essential prices high, well, I don't like Obama's chances.
Throw in some humiliating foreign policy setbacks (again, an easy projection of this administration's history), the continued pitter-patter of Master Class scandals (Panetta's weekend getaways, Michelle's lavish vacations, GSA partays, etc.), and Romney's need to go negative diminishes.
Don't forget Obama's whoring drug snorting praetorians.
Not his. They belong to the Illuminati to keep the POTUS in line.
P.S. I'm only 99.7% joking. The way they fucked over Nixon makes me wonder.
Some poll on the news yesterday had Romney ahead - very bad news for an incumbent at this stage.

How sorry can you feel for a guy like that?
In France it is customery for the leaders to have a mistress, it probably is more of a scandal if the French head of state is not banging someone else on the side.
The voters are clinging to the life raft, hoping the "next" politician will somehow save them from the impending fiscal-alypse. An avowed socialist will either make things worse, or may have the cover to actually make the required cuts. I'm voting on the former, but hey...
Yes, if one has observed the last few elections in Europe, left wing governments are replaced by right wing governments and vice versa. The voters are desperate, but in the end, the politicians they vote for are not that different from the other guys.
That shrimp thing sure is freaky.
