Buffett Rule Dies, Online Illicit-Drug Retailer Taken Down, Canadians Won't Trade Liberty for (Promised) Security: P.M. Links
-
Say "goodbye" to at least one tax hike. The so-called "Buffett rule" failed to gather enough votes to break a Senate filibuster.
- Tax freedom day — when Americans are done working just to pay for government — falls on April 17 this year. With taxmageddon approaching at the end of 2012, tax cuts are set to expire, pushing Americans to labor for government for another month.
- Police working in several countries busted a sophisticated online retailer of your finer illicit intoxicants. Using the privacy-shielding Tor network, the business had catered to thousands of customers since 2006.
- Jurors being screened for the perjury trial of Roger Clemens repeatedly challenged the wisdom of the congressional hearing at which Clemens allegedly lied, as well as the expense of prosecuting the baseball pitcher.
- Escape-clause-laden their 30-year-old Charter of Rights and Freedoms may be, but Canadians in a recent poll voiced strong disagreement with the idea that they should sacrifice civil liberties in the name of the war on terror.
- Former reporter alleges Albuquerque police seized a camera and deleted evidence of police brutality.

Pics or it didn't happen.
And now a word this "invalid comment" business. I, as well as many others here, are certified Hit & Run commenters, duly registered by Reason, on official commenting business. It is unacceptable that our comments be judged as valid or invalid by some rigid and seemingly arbitrary algorithm. Our words are our art.
This. Will. Not. Stand.
Is this soulless arbiter also swallowing links in comments? I miss my additional am/pm links with the am/pm links.
and those of us who are NOT vulgar, profane, eStalkers, or post dubious links shouldnt have to suffer like teh [FOOLZ] who do whether certified, registered, or not. >mary stack is NOT the standard of blogging liberty
As another officially registered Hit & Run commenter, I agree with the sentiment of this message in total.
How odd. My comments never get marked as invalid. I guess reason just likes me more.
You're just using stolen blood to avoid being marked as invalid, Jerome.
Or should I say Vincent?
Not a Gattaca fan. At all.
That's because you're genetically inferior. Above the chimpanzee but below the orangutan. Right about bonobo, I think.
Bonobos are the sexy ones. Looks like I win again, ProL.
Yes, Episiarch, you are a monkey that likes to have lots of sex. So, I suppose, you win something.
Nick, tell Episiarch what he's won.
A rectal prolapse and a ball of copmacted vomit?
And the home version of Hit & Run!
But I already have those, Ska! I need something new!
I've got a copy of Urkobold: The Home Game, but I don't think you'd like that one.
Not a Gattaca fan. At all.
Why? Not an Armani 2-button space suit kind of guy?
Ignore him on this topic. He's insane.
Ignore him on this topic. He's insane.
Mother fucker.
I'm not spam!
Your comment grows tiresome.
I got the "You're spam!" message, apparently because of the double post and the attempt to comment on it (I originally said "Motherfucker!").
But I'd be okay with that message also being, "Your comment grows tiresome."
MOTHERFUCKER!
Hmmm, no problems here.
I don't think the epithet triggered the SPAMGUARD. Rather, it was the three comments posted so rapidly.

its because the slime covering your comments allows them to slip through any potential barrier.
Gentlemen, these documents all speak of rights. Rights of the accused to a trial by his peers, to be represented by counsel, the rights of cross-examination; but, MOST importantly, the right to be confronted by the witnesses against him - a right to which my client has been denied.
Areel Shaw: Your Honor, that is ridiculous! We've produced the witnesses in court. My learned opponent had the opportunity to see them, cross-examine them...
Cogley: All but one! The most devastating witness against my client is not a human being. It's a machine, an information system - the computer log of the Enterprise - and I ask this court adjourn and reconvene aboard that vessel.
Areel Shaw: I protest, your honor.
Cogley: And I repeat, I speak of rights! A machine has none. A man must. My client has the right to face his accuser, and if you do not grant him that right, you have brought us down to the level of the machine! Indeed, you have elevated that machine above us! I ask that my motion be granted. And more than that, gentlemen - in the name of a humanity fading in the shadow of the machine - I demand it. I demand it!
Yeah, what FOE said. Also the shameful removal of anonbot's comments. This morning its comment was IIRC "Sometime you just need to say whoa WHOS [sic] YOUR DADDY". If this eloquent and insightful comment can get deleted, who amongst us is safe?

And now a word this "invalid comment" business....
Yeah!? What the fuck? It's the daily 'links' thread, and they don't let me post no links?? (oh, sure, you *fancy lads* who know that whole HTML tagging BS and do it *proper* slide by, but noooo.... us Internet 1.0 cro-magnons who simply think cut-&-pasting is perfectly acceptable get hosed! I am outraged and indignant and take umbrage and all that shit. "INVALID"??? After half a year of failing to do anything about #($*@ White Indian's nonsense, Reason has the nerve... THE NERVE.. to call ME?? MY POSTS!!>?! INVALID???? UNACCEPTABLE?? (slaps website in the face with kid-skin glove) PISTOLS AT DAWN SIR!!!!
Graduate of w3schools HTML right here.

Remember that idiot who was calling Ron Paul supporters Nazis yesterday? She ended her congressional campaign today.
Let me guess. She finally hired a campaign manager and his first and only piece of advice was "quit".
and another dominionist bites the dust. dont let the establishment clause hit ya on the way out...
Wow I missed that. I like this from her, though:
In Wikipedia, wearing a flag is a form of flag desecration. Wikipedia states the following:
It is increasingly common to see clothing with the image of the flags forming a substantial part of the piece. Views vary as to whether some of this is an act of disrespect.
Such actions may be undertaken for a variety of reasons:
- As a protest against a country's foreign policy.
- To distance oneself from the foreign or domestic policies of one's home country.
- As a protest at the very laws prohibiting the actions in question.
- As a protest against nationalism.
- As a protest against the government in power in the country, or against the country's form of government.
- A symbolic insult to the people of that country.
So it appears that this person was wearing the US flag in order to desecrate our flag.
What impeccable fucking reasoning. Wikipedia, the all knowing, says that some people may wear a flag garment in protest so this person must be desecrating the flag! Does that mean Uncle Sam is a terrorist?

I can sympathize with her complaint, if accurate, that she had to cut 2/3rds of her prepared speech down after watching her opponent get all the time he wanted. Voting to muzzle your opposition is not especially libertarian to me.
Fuck the rest of her complaints though.
Congress, taking it on the chin from Juror No. 11.
Silly Juror, doesn't he realize that steroids in baseball threatens are very lives and liberty and Congress just has to act or risk our entire society unraveling?
Congressional subpeona is a wasteful, useless grandstanding exercise in 99% of the cases they use it. If it doesn't involve government impeachment, it doesn't belong in Congress. By now I think any reasonable person can see its just a way to score re-election points for sitting members.
By now I think any reasonable person can see its just a way to score re-election points for sitting members.
So, another problem that could be solved with term limits?
Almost all societal ills can be fixed with term limits.
Including syphillus
All diseases can be cured with term limits. Surviving the term limitation is highly, highly unlikely.
OBAMNEYCARE FTW!
Not silly at all, as the comment will probably get him dismissed from the jury.
Why do you want us to become Somalia? Without Congress getting involved in athletes taking steroids we'd be on the fast track.

Fracking causes earthquakes, studies confirm.
Pretty sure injecting high pressure fluid into rock formations is going to induce seismic activity. Remember that the scale is logarithmic. A 7.0 is 1000 times bigger than a 4.0 which is 1000 times bigger than a 1.0. Are we talking 1.0 or 7.0 from fracking?
It all seems kind of bunk if you ask me:
I'm no big-city geologist (*gasp*), but a 0.5 is like stamping your foot hard.
many slight muscle twinges have resulted from these 0.5 richter earthquakes.
Are you for slight muscle twinges!?!?!
I've had farts that registered 1.5.
Pussy!
correction - injection wells (near faults), not fracking per se, has caused earthquakes in OK, MI, OH & the UK.
oops - make that "wastewater injection wells"...
So the injection wells are releasing the tension in the faults a little at a time rather than a natural, single catastrophic release. Win/win.
So when do we weaponize this?
I'm working on getting it into a drone.
I could swear I read something that said these claims were totally bogus.
I would have a really hard time believing that there wasn't some stress/strain shifting going on at the injection sites. However, having been through numerous "earthquakes" in Costa Rica that failed move anything more than the fluid in my inner ear just enough to be disturbing, I'm not at all skeptical that there is noticeable seismic activity nor do I fear that this seismic activity will lead to property damage or Superman III style chasms opening beneath the feet of innocent Okies/Brits/Michiganders.
I think what I read--maybe in Popular Mechanics?--said that the effects couldn't be more than nominal, given the energies involved. Can't really remember.
OMNI magazine circa 1978. They looked at the possibility of injection wells along the San Andreas fault to trigger more frequent but smaller earthquakes.
Yeah, well, I'm thinking I read the article in the last few months.
Very likely - but it just goes to show you that this ain't exactly cutting edge science. Did I mention that OMNI thought triggering small earthquakes was a good thing?
You read OMNI back in the day?

It wasn't polite of those students to laugh at that teaching assistant's lecture.
That's the most punchable man I've ever seen.
The people in the audience didn't even look like they were laughing.
Of course it was.
Oh, that guy. I had to stop watching that ep of Conan for the sake of my blood pressure.
OTOH, last night on Dave Letterman the comedian made a joke about Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. The audience wasn't with him at first but the whole "Maybe they could have given it to a President of a country with no wars, or failing that, just one war?" won them over.
By "the comedian" I am not referring to Kilstein, btw.

Well, there's a ringing endorsement of Tor.
Eh. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Tor doesn't have enough "noise" to cover the signal of thousands of people who only turn on Tor when they want to buy drugs online. If you're going to buy drugs with Tor, also comment on reason with it. At random hours of the day.

I'm loving my elections and voting class, mainly because the professsor supports Citizens United and points out the rank hypocrisy of Democrats like Obama who say they support campaign finance regulations when Obama essentially killed public financing when he broke his promise to accept it.
Canadians in a recent poll voiced strong disagreement with the idea that they should sacrifice civil liberties in the name of the war on terror.
Now we're being schooled by Canadians on the importance of civil liberties? I'm pretty sure that's one of the signs of the end times.
Yeah, them with their beady eyes and flappin' heads!
"From 2007 to 2009 alone, the marketplace processed more than 5,000 orders for drugs valued at more than $1 million, federal officials contended."

Yeah, but these guys did it without having to be in Philadelphia.

No, pushing wealthy 1% fatcats to sit on their asses for another month without their trust funds growing as much. Like they did before Adolf W. Busholinni took over.
No one who actually "labors" is losing a tax cut.
C- trolling.
The preferred nomenclature is BushHitler W. McChimpiburton.
No, pushing wealthy 1% fatcats to sit on their asses for another month...
Fuck off, slaver!
Wow, you don't actually know what the tax cuts did, do you?
a new 10% bracket was created for single filers with taxable income up to $6,000, joint filers up to $12,000, and heads of households up to $10,000.
the 15% bracket's lower threshold was indexed to the new 10% bracket
the 28% bracket would be lowered to 25% by 2006.
The EGTRRA in many cases lowered the taxes on married couples filing jointly by increasing the standard deduction for joint filers to between 174% and 200% of the deduction for single filers.
Don't confuse mustard with facts. He/She/It knows what's true. Obamessaiah has told him/her/it.
Taxmageddon? End of 2012? Meh, it doesn't really matter.
Last year we had a world-devouring debt ceiling crisis narrowly averted by pinkie swears by both the Reps and the Dems that they were going to form a blue ribbon panel (of Top Men, natch) to consider recommending possible suggestions for perhaps cutting the deficit in some sort of indefinite way, and if they didn't follow through the government faced automatic across-the-board budget cuts. We were assured that the prospect of across-the-board cuts were so horrifying a prospect, so untenable an outcome that bipartisan budget cutting was a shoe-in. Somehow the unthinkable and totally-not-predictable happened - the blue ribbonistas failed to find a single gram of budgetary fat to cut from the Congressional diet. (To be fair, John Conyers refused the MEG scan that many suspected would have revealed large deposits of fat.)
Given that those automatic across-the-board budget cuts are scheduled to take place shortly after the first of the year and will ravage the national budget to the tune of literally billions of dollars, I think Taxmageddon is not that big a deal - it is the Apocalypse of the coming budget cuts that keep me awake at night.
As has already been mentioned on this website, the "Buffett Rule" bill in the Senate was DOA because, under the Constitution, all tax bills must begin in the House.
"Canadians in a recent poll voiced strong disagreement with the idea that they should sacrifice civil liberties in the name of the war on terror."
But, in the war against insensitivity, civil liberties just get in the way.

Our squirrel overlords have deemed my comments containing links invalid, so you'll have to manually meander on over to CNN's website to read Sandra Fluke's latest estrogen-fueled salvo on this front. It's every bit as cringe worthy as you might expect.
That was meant for Coeus' post on Equal Pay Day above. Fuckin' squirrel fascists.
There ya go. Squirrels love me for some reason.
I for one welcome our squirrel, ah fek it. Man the barricades men or close the wall up with our Reasonoid dead.
I've noticed a lot of mine that get flagged as invalid don't even contain any links. Not sure what the squirrels are looking for. Maybe it's a specific word, like "it".
Nope, it's not "it".

WTF "Your comment is invalid"?????
It seems to be an anti-Mary measure that's a little too aggressive. It means that they're still taking keeping this place free of her seriously, which is good.
I have a suggestion. Rather than "Your comment is invalid", they should use "Your comment grows tiresome."
How about "Shut UP, Stella!" I like that better.

It's not a meme. It's a trend.
It comes from the old Dieter sketches on SNL. Dieter would get bored and say, "Your story grows tiresome."
Now is ze time on Sprockets vhen ve dance!
Oh, bloody hell. I forgot about Dieter. I am embarrass.
Oh shut up, for you are just a head in a rusty metal box.

By the way, I haven't gotten this message yet. Is it entirely clear what triggers it?
Well, it can't be being a douchebag, or you would have hit it instantly. Of course, so would have I.
Yes, the fact that neither of us have gotten the message is either disturbing or repellant.
Which one of you is disturbing and which is repellant? This is not mutually exclusive, you know.
ProL must be repellent because I have no idea what repellant is.

If they touch one link that emanates from your furry hand, O Wonder From Down Under...
I am going to call bullshit on the tax freedom day thing. Deficit financing is just a way of taxing future income, so Tax Freedom Day doesn't happen until you reach the point where the expenditures would no longer require a bite out of income to pay for them.
Just because the government stops taking it directly out of your wallet and signs your name to an IOU does not mean you are finished with the government yoke for the year.
By my calculations under your model, Tax Freedom Day would be on Duodecimber 19.
That's the problem in general with anti-tax organizations that treat debt as anything but another tax. And let's not forget monetary devaluation.
If it is cheaper to pay off the debt with a tax increase now than an increase plus interest later, I'd prefer more taxes now and stop either printing money or writing up IOUs. Of course, I'd prefer government spending come to a near-screeching halt and use taxes primarily to pay down the principle on the existing debt.

Oddly the writer is an antiwar Muslim so I guess he isn't concerned that anti-Muslim laws could be promulgated as being part of the "public good." Odd how many of the antiwar leftists seem to really love the state (even the US State) as long as The Right People are in charge.
