New York City's Consumer Affairs office fined Jamal Ahmad $30,000 after they found a 99 cent store he owned carried toy sheriff's sets with fake handguns. Although the guns had bright orange tips, officials say they violate a city ordinance barring the sale of realistic-looking toy guns.

"in NY, its illegal to paint a toy gun to look real & illegal to paint a real gun to look like a toy"

  So, the city says (a) you cannot sell a realistic-looking toy gun, and (b) that painting an orange tip on a real gun is not allowed because it makes it look like an unrealistic-looking toy gun.

The rule is designed to prevent cops from mistaking the toys for the real thing ? and shooting an innocent kid ? and to thwart criminals from using them to commit crimes.

Don't you just get a thrill up your leg about how the first intent of a law is to restrain the people from buying toy guns, rather than restraining the police from willfully shooting the people?

But a Consumer Affairs spokeswoman countered, "Realistic-looking imitation guns are illegal and dangerous, and just last week, a 15-year-old in Texas was killed while holding one of these guns."

Sounds like the cop the 15-year-old was standing next to was the dangerous element in this story.
