Atlas Shrugged: Part II Greenlighted, In Theaters Next Fall
"It's a poetic moment that today [February 2, 2012] Ayn Rand was born 107 years ago and we are greenlighting Atlas Shrugged: Part II," announced producer John Aglialoro at Reason Weekend 2012, which was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Aglialoro was joined by his partner Harmon Kaslow in making the announcement.
Filming is set to begin in April and the movie will hit theaters this fall, before Election Day. "In October," said Kaslow, "hopefully we'll have people from Reason, from FreedomWorks, people who believe in what this book represents, [standing] in front of the…theater to tell people not only how important the movie is but what they're going to do in November and hopefully effectuate some positive changes."
The official Part 2 trailer is online here.
About 3.30 minutes. Filmed by Anthony Fisher and Joshua Swain; edited by Swain.

The Committee to De-Empathize Humans cursed your parasitism, moocher.
And thus, both are a virtue. Fiberarian told me so, below, about a dozen times already! Anyway, questions:
? Is any white person's right an individual or collective right?
? Is the right to take a negative or positive right?

Pretty much any agricultural city-Statist thinks the same thing, to whitewash the American Holocaust in which 100,000,000 souls were murdered.
Yep, 100,000,000. Stalin and Mao are pikers compared to capitalist capacity to commit genocide.

1. American colonists weren't capitalists or even liberals, they were imperialists. Capitalism doesn't begin to be well-defined until The Wealth of Nations in 1787, which is about the same time violence against Native Americans begins to taper off, and really coalesced in the second-half of the 19th-century...the same time reservations were being set up to protect Indians. Capitalism was the pacify force.
2. Those Indian deaths, both before and after capitalism, were driven by anti-capitalist, imperialist government policy like Manifest Destiny, not private industry. Private capitalists were busy trading for Indian furs.
(continued...)
(continued...)
3. Mao and Stalin, however, were self-defined Socialists operating during the peak reign of Socialist ideology. They were as Socialist as Socialism gets.
4. There are three ideological periods in history where you find this scale of violence (with it's modern equivalent):
a) 17th and 18th century Imperialism (Neo-cons)
b) 20th century European Socialism (Progressives)
c) PREHISTORIC SOCIETIES (Anarcho Primitivists)
http://www.edge.org/images/sp-Slide011.jpg
More capitalist city-STATIST bullshit on display.
No, it's real research from a well-known, respected scholar, not some bozo activist posing as a scholar, like all the bullshit nonsense you link to.
THAT WAS A QUICK DIVORCE!
Bullshit me some more, KPres.
Uh, no. The only people that claim there was a marriage is far-left lunatics like yourself praying they can mis-associate capitalism with imperialism/mercantilism, in the hopes that people don't realize the truth, which is that capitalism was the pacifying force that ended things like slavery and all the violence you wail against. Unfortunately, by the early-to-mid 20th century, dumbfucks like yourself had people questioning capitalism again, and all the violence started right back up where it had left off.
100 million? I seriously doubt that the entire native population of both continents of the New World ever even reached that figure before Europeans got here. "American Holocaust?" I suppose none of those poor, peaceful, put-upon primitives ever harmed a soul, did they? It was those nasty European white people who did all the killing, huh? Shit!
...Yeah, his 100 million comes from another Nativist idealogue posing as a scholor.
The official US study on the subject put the number at 1-4 million, and other estimates are in the 10 million range (still a gross statistic, but keep in mind, this is over 300 years, not a few decades like Stalin/Mao/Hitler).
The official US study.

Surprise,Surprise! Primitard Fuckwit shows up again to take its daily shit in the living room.
I enjoyed the film quite a lot and it was refreshing to watch a film that didn't portray self-interest as evil.
Same here. And while the acting was somewhat stilted and the filming could have been a bit better, it had a small budget and it got the point across exceptionally well.
Leftist state-loving dipshits will lament it's embrace of the individual as hero, but they do that in every film that portrays government negatively. Shit, I'd bet Leonard thinks Brazil was a pretty cool idea for the way things ought to be and cheered when Sam got what was coming.
...will love that Ayn Rand loved big government. Big enough to enforce Gambol Lockdown with it's Land enTITLEment programs that draw artificial borders to restrict the free movement of people to hunt and gather a free lunch.
Because if you can't gather a free lunch anywhere, you're forced to work in a rear-dem-asses steel mill or some shit job.

TANSTAAFL, shithead - there aint no such thing as a free lunch.
Food resources were "both varied and abundant", particularly the energy rich mangetti nut- "so abundant that millions of the nuts rotted on the ground each year for want of picking."

But Fibertard Fundamentalists hate science for the same reason that Creationist Fundamentalist do: it blows their world view out of the water.
"Why should we plant, when there are so many mongomongo nuts in the world?"
Yeah, dipshit. Foraging was fine (well, passable - plus they were too stupid to know anything better) when there was a 100 million humans sparsely populating the planet, not 7 billion. Now there aren't tons mongomongo nuts all over the world (well, in anarcho-primitivist circles there's plenty of nuts out there). Too bad for you, before you manage to kill off 6.75 billion people like you'd like, technology will have provided us far mongomgo nuts than the earth alone ever could.
hey, 70 TRILLION humans are even MORE BETTER, right?
It's funny watching Fibetards pick up the utilitarian bullshit of the progressives so fast.

Even foraging takes time and effort, so TANSTAAFL is still a valid statement.
so don't bullshit me, FIBertard.
I was terribly disappointed in the movie. I was hoping for a life altering film that would force people to think about where wealth comes from and that the pursuit of rational self interests actually benefits all.
The movie blazed by at blinding speed and offered little concept development. Sure, anyone who read the book could follow it, but I'm afraid those who didn't never got the point.
Let's face it, you can't back 1/3 of AS into a 90 minute film.
Hope 2 is better, but I doubt it. Opportunity squandered and now the best hope is a remake in the future.

You don't observe a market system. You observe a Mixed Economy. The Government controls 40%-50% of GDP. That's demonstrably not free market capitalism.
And no, that statement is not comparable to a communist making the same claim about the Soviet Union. The Soviets were, in fact, a Socialist command economy. Industry was run by the state. There was no private industry. It wasn't a Mixed Economy claiming to be communist. It was communism.
Oh right, helping people is bad. I forgot.
No, being forced to help people against one's will is what is bad. And you didn't forget - you're just a dishonest and dishonorable asshole is all.

Selfishness: Lack of regard for the selfishness of others.

The U.S. release of Atlas Shrugged: Part I was regarded as a "flop".[22] It opened on 300 screens on April 15, 2011, and made $1,676,917 in its opening weekend, finishing in 14th place overall.[23] Producers announced expansion to 423 theaters several days after release and promised 1,000 theaters by the end of April,[24] but the release peaked at 465 screens. Ticket sales dropped off significantly in its second week of release, despite 165 additional screens; after six weeks, the film showed on only 32 screens and total ticket sales had not crossed the $5 million mark, recouping less than a quarter of the production budget.

Sold for their true market value. ZERO.
If they are free, then they aren't being sold at all, dumb-dumb.
Well, the producer is within this rights to make the film if he wants.
I'm wondering how DVD sales have been. It seems to me Libertarians might be significantly more likely to buy a DVD than view a film in theaters.
I would suspect the film was green lit because of DVD sales. However, the deadline seems awfully ambitious. I also wonder how you sell Part II when there's no resolution to the story. Part I, with the John Galt Line story, is inherently interesting as a more or less complete plot line, but I don't remember Part II as having that advantage.
D
After watching the trailer, I wouldn't pay to watch the film. Besides, I've read the book and I'm sure it's superior to the film. I also remember the Fountainhead debacle. (shudder)
Was 1 a big hit? I thought it died quickly
It was stunningly bad.
Miss Ayn Rand has concocted a tale of woe and misery among baron industrialists. These poor saps must comply with a regulation or two before they amass billions of dollars. Their travails are captured in agonizing detail as once one of them actually soils his hand in a meaningless local groundbreaking ceremony.
Very bad cinema indeed.
I just hope at some point during the next decade, an A-list director with uber-super-duper-ultra-awesome-HUGE funding gets around to another try at adapting the book to the screen, and we get a LotR-quality epic, or something.
Any contenders for that director?
Unless you're being a douche. In that case, consider my previous comment unthreaded.
Paul Thomas Anderson would be that director.
But then he has already filmed a prototype for Galt in the epic There Will Be Blood with Daniel Day-Lewis in the leading role of Daniel Plainview. It was superb.
must comply with a regulation or two
Another leftist who responds before he thinks. Apparently actually reading the book is too complicated for you. I suggest you start with something more focused at your reading level - say The Lorax?
I think the alphabet might be a better point to start.
Eventually one should arrive at adult literature, though.
Unless one is retarded, so Leonard may have an excuse.
You don't think it's adult literature?
It's uses an analogy to make a point and advocate something, and here we are here we are more than 50 years later...
Any work that has that kind of impact on people's thinking--and even you apparently have a strong opinion on it--can't be dismissed as not-adult.
Why do you have such a strong opinion on Ayn Rand, Tony? That's what Ayn Rand wanted, you know.
Do you know you're doing what Ayn Rand said you would do?
You know how a child goes through a phase...mine, Mine, MINE! and me, Me, ME!

I think Leonard misses the entire point of the book. Whoosh....right over his head. What a shock.
Meh, I think Leonard is an obvious troll that wants to destroy the thread because he knows the movie is a blueprint for what's happening in America right now, and doesn't want an intelligent discourse about it.

Atlas these days reads almost like a Peak Oil survivalist fantasy. Rand apparently accepted a form of Malthusianism which held that we have too many philosophically undesirable people in the world. Just withdraw the energy supplies (Galt's motor, Ellis Wyatt's shale oil, Ken Dannager's coal) that sustain them, and the resulting die off will restore Earth to its Objectivist carrying capacity.

Complete quote, Jason Godesky
Time for a replay!
I quote myself
I want you to quote me
When I'm feelin' down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me
I forget myself
I want you to remind me
I don't want anybody else
When I think about you
I quote myself
I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no
You're the one who makes me happy honey
You're the sun who makes me shine
When you're around I'm always laughing
I want to make you mine
I close my eyes
And see you before me
Think I would die
If you were to ignore me
A fool could see
Just how much I adore you
I get down on my knees
I'd do anything for you
I don't want anybody else
When I think about you
I quote myself
I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no
I quote myself
I want you to quote me
When I'm feelin' down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me

Another Rand discussion full of talk about the infantilism of Randoids, the childishness of libertarians and the adolescence of anybody who thinks a "regulation or two" might have deleterious consequences for the economy.
Yet the phrases "Russia," "Soviet," "USSR," "communism," and "socialism" ? all of which are central to any understanding of Rand, even if you oppose her ? somehow never come up.
One thing fully developed adults grow beyond is ignorance of the history of the world they live in. I know all that stuff about Stalin and Lenin and the other guy (McCartney?) happened way back when to people who wore powdered wigs and stuff, but if you don't pay attention to Rand's practical experience of the worker's paradise, and of how her father's example informed the plot of Atlas Shrugged, you're just talking about yourself.
If you don't pay attention to the 99%'s practical experience of the capitalist worker's paradise...

This #GlobalSpring, we will take the streets again. On May 1st, Occupy Wall Street has called for a General Strike. I have ancestors who were Whites. Their approach to dealing with the brigand red guardsmen was to execute them if the battle went their way -- no compromise. That's the approach I'll be taking if ever these despicable sacks of pinko shit try to look anything anywhere near my neighborhood, and I'm far from the only one with such sentiments.
Why Occupy Wall Street? Try eastern North Carolina. See how many seconds you last setting fire to people's houses.

I still don't get why they didn't make it one movie. Cut John Galt's speech to 5 minutes and you're almost there.
I hope they make Part 3 just to see if they think audiences will sit there listening to a speech for 45 minutes.
People liked My Dinner With Andre. It's been 20 years since I've seen it, but the first hour of that film is Andre Gregory basically giving a monologue. A long monologue with odd diction, repetitive phrasing, arcane topics, and monotone direction. So yeah, it might work for Galt's speech.
This is like the worst chat room ever.
For the record, I shall repeat what I have said many times before: I do not join or endorse any political group or movement. More specifically, I disapprove of, disagree with, and have no connection with, the latest aberration of some conservatives, the so-called "hippies of the right," who attempt to snare the younger or more careless ones of my readers by claiming simultanteously to be followers of my philosophy and advocates of anarchism. Anyone offering such a combination confesses his inability to understand either. Anarchism is the most irrational, anti-intellectual notion ever spun by the concrete-bound, context-dropping, whim-worshiping fringe of the collectivist movement, where it properly belongs.

If it is a requirement for libertarians to like turdburgers like this, I resign.
Ayn Rand, definately a liberaterian.(sarcasm)
"The major lesson of the history of the [objectivist] movement to libertarians is that It Can Happen Here, that libertarians, despite explicit devotion to reason and individuality, are not exempt from the mystical and totalitarian cultism that pervades other ideological as well as religious movements. Hopefully, libertarians, once bitten by the virus, may now prove immune."
"They are not defenders of capitalism... I've read nothing by a Libertarian (when I read them, in the early years) that wasn't my ideas badly mishandled?i.e., had the teeth pulled out of them?with no credit given."
Cont.
"The trouble with the world today is philosophical: only the right philosophy can save us. But this party plagiarizes some of my ideas, mixes them with the exact opposite?with religionists, anarchists and every intellectual misfit and scum they can find?and call themselves libertarians and run for office."
"hopefully we'll have people from Reason, from FreedomWorks, people who believe in what this book represents, [standing] in front of the...theater to tell people not only how important the movie is but what they're going to do in November and hopefully effectuate some positive changes."
So you want a bunch of libertarians to stand up in front of a theater packed with Objectivists and tell them to vote for Romney? That makes my head hurt on many levels.
Given the dismal box office failure of the last movie, who greenlit this, anyway? Are they gonna just go super low budget and hope the Rand Cultists will just see it 5 times each?
If Gary Johnson acts smart, well read, and says some nice things about Rand, I think Objectivists might throw their (electorally insignifant) weight behind him. Rand supported Wendell Willkie, and wasn't he supposed to be a "conservative intellectual" or some such thing?
Put the Ban Hammer down on any one who responds to the creep.
Which creep?
...censorship--even private censorship (i.e., editorial standards)--flies in the face of libertarian "ethics."
"Put[ting] the Ban Hammer down" can't--and won't--happen here. Anarcho-libertarianism has painted itself in a corner with its subjectivist/collectivist ethics (or, more accurately, its lack thereof.) The result: reaping what they have sown. Lovely, isn't it?
It would be nice if they at least banned the spambots.
...censorship--even private censorship (i.e., editorial standards)--flies in the face of libertarian "ethics."
No, it doesn't - "libertarian ethics" does not conflict with exercising private property rights. Kicking assholes off a comment board is not essentially different than telling some obnoxious jerk to shut the fuck up or get the hell out of my house.
You're absolutely right.
If you come into my house and say something I don't like, I get to throw you out of my house.

You're not attacking anything. You're just calling people names and acting like a kid in junior high.
You used to have interesting stuff to say. These days, you don't say anything that merits a response--even when I do respond.

Meh...I didn't really care for part one. Part two doesn't interest me in the least.
It only bore a passing resemblance to the original work. I guess they modernized it so people could relate the ideas more to their current day lives, but it loses something in the translation. And far too much is glossed over or completely ommitted in the film. The characters are plastic and the story is reduced down to only a singular overly simplified economic concept. All of the details and internal dialoges that make the characters who they really are and make you interested in the story are missing. It's more like a boring economics lecture than an interesting story.
"There wasn't a Hollywood studio that would that even get a clue to what Atlas Shrugged was all about"
While I'm not at issue with that statement, I'm not entirely sure our Heroes are entirely sure either.
Also, is it me or does the bizarre little stylized logo of the guy carrying the world look like a clip-art used for "Global Leadership" or some other consulting banality.
The image of atlas(the guy carrying the world) bearing the earth on his shoulders has been used too many times to count. It's a popular tool because of the multitude of messages that one can interpret from it.
You kind of missed the point of the book if you didn't know what that "bizarre little stylized logo" was. The title isn't just a random bunch of words.
Fyi, the video of Part 1 is now on Netflix....and when I found it, it was filed under the category "science fiction and fantasy"!!!! Some prejudices never change, do they? I guess this is one of those "As long as they spell your name right" kind of things. Barely.
What category are they supposed to put it in? If you actually watch the movie it fits more in that category than any other. I'd say it could belong in drama, but the way they "modernized" it it does feel more like sci-fi than drama.
All the liberties they took in adapting it to film make it only a passing resemblance to the novel anyway.
