I think that can be extended to the media and members of Congress. The actions of a lone solder probably should not alter your opinion of the war too greatly. Granted, I think the fact that there's now a horrifying face to the concept of war-weariness will have a silver lining, but it will still be politicians doing what politicians usually do: buckling themselves into their seat in congress and riding the wind of public opinion.

The new law decides whether alimony will be granted, if at all, based not on a wide variety of criteria -- such as the value of the nonworking spouse's contributions to the marriage -- but on how many years the couple stayed married and how much money the working spouse made during the marriage. And it won't last a lifetime. If a marriage lasted 15 years, a woman will receive alimony, at most, for only 10? years.

It's craziness. The Massachusetts legislature has effectively embraced a policy declaring that being married is roughly akin to working in state government. The more years you log, the bigger your pension, and if you make it to certain cut-off periods, you get a larger sum.

  The legislature wants to regularize what's happening anyway in courts. But the lawyer lobby doesn't want that to happen, because they want to make sure they get their cut from everybody in every last case.

  As someone going through a divorce in MA (I sued for divorce 24 months ago - trial is scheduled in three months) I can tell you that this law made the place far less misandronystic.
  
  Essentially under the old scheme, once she put the ring on, the man was expected to support he forever, and give her a substantial portion of his income, forever.
  
  The new system is far better. My ex is no longer going to get an automatic pass despite all the crazy self-destructive shit she pulled.

While I oppose the Viagra Bill it does seem like poetic justice to me. If the government is going to keep telling women that their bodies are State property then maybe men should give up some of their reproductive freedom as well.

By the way, if men could get pregnant, there'd be as many abortion clinics as there are gas stations.

  Look, no one is claiming state ownership of women's bodies. There is a pretty lively debate, however, if a right to abortion or contraception corresponds with a right for the state, or an employer, to pay for it. It is a debate about positive v. negative liberties and the extent of religious freedom, NOT about women.
  
  The whole "This is a war on women" is a stupid and false dichotomy that has been created because it is a simpler (read: dumber and easier) debate to have than the actual debate here.

      Yeah, but even then, it's a stupid reduction of the debate over what, if any, are the rights possessed by fetuses (which are, scientifically speaking, both human and alive). It's not like the pro-life types hate women: they just legitimately believe that personhood is bestowed at or near conception. It's also not like the pro-choice types hate babies- they just do not see the rights of the fetus being on par with the right of the mother especially when the fetus is not viable outside of the womb. But instead of having a mature, adult conversation about that, we are reduced to "baby killers" and "misogynists" when that isn't really what either side believes.

        You have to see that for many women reproductive control is a health issue, they see a woman's health and opportunties as greatly diminished if they can't control when they get pregnant. Since that hits women they see proposals that would diminish that as "attacks on women." Is it overblown and hysterical at times, yeah, but it certainly has a reasonable kernel at its core sometimes...

        I'd have agreed with you 20 years ago, but not now as much. People change their views on abortion the more info is put out about it. Not to mention, now that medical advances have helped babies survive from much earlier in pregnancies, people by and large want to push back the "abortion-on-demand" timeframe.
        
        Of course, I'm apparently a bible-thumping moron who doesn't have any intellectual curiosity anymore because I believe in God. At least that's what I was told over and over and over again this weekend.

    Actually, I don't think this bill is a response to the required contraception coverage debate.
    
    It's a response to the required ultrasound for an abortion debate.
    
    The people bitching about the ultrasound laws are in fact correct when they say that these laws are abusing the power the state has claimed to regulate the practice of medicine in order to attempt to achieve an unrelated policy end.
    
    The problem is that they can't see that the presence of that regulatory power means we now will get to haggle over that power's proper use for fuckingforevermore.

    To some extent the state claims ownership of everyone's bodies. I happen to believe that if you own your own body, you have the right to expel any other people or organisms which are living inside of you, so I would say that in cases where laws intending to restrict abortion are in place, teh state tries to control women's bodies a bit more.
    But al long as you are not allowed to sell your body parts, or modify them in any way, or sell your body as a prostitute the state is claiming at least partial ownership of your body. If you can't sell something, then it's hard to say it is your property.

Gloria Allred: Jail Rush Limbaugh for 'slut' comments

In a letter dated March 8, Allred, writing on behalf of the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund, requested that Palm Beach County State Attorney Michael McAuliffe probe whether the conservative radio personality had violated Section 836.04 of the Florida Statutes by calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke the two derogatory words.

The statute stipulates that anyone who "speaks of and concerning any woman, married or unmarried, falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity" is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree. Allred explained that the statute recently came to her attention as having never been repealed, and that it could very well apply to Limbaugh's remarks as his show is broadcast from West Palm Beach.

    (1) The dark meat is quite similar to shoe leather. I don't even bother with it any more. I just breast the damn things, toss the carcass where I have a good line of sight, and bring my coyote shooter then next morning.

Yes, I get the idea: Liberals get sponsors to turn on Rush for calling a woman a slut and a prostitute. Well, Maher has said just the same if not worse, as has Louie C.K.

But here's the thing: You've always been able to go blue in comedy if you are funny. White guys can and do still make racial jokes, provided they tell them right. Comedians seem to be some of the only people in the world right now who can use the word faggot without people freaking the fuck out. And one of the reasons I love South Park is their philosophy of "No Cow too sacred".

But it appears as a society we are moving towards more words/subjects being taboo, towards more getting butthurt at every slight, and towards being more political and partisan, and I guess I simply do not see that as progress.

        I'm not sure it's even about "as big as." Rush himself sees himself as one of the big voices of movement conservatism and aligned with the GOP/conservatism, I don't see that in Maher. If you listen to Rush, and I do, he actually says things like "I'm not going to criticize any GOP nominee too much because I want to be able to support them for the ultimate goal of defeating the Democrat candidate in Nov." I'm not aware of Maher aligning himself in his "act" with any side that explicitly. And then there is the other side, how much they are then embraced by the relevant sides.

        We've gone from, "Nigger is not acceptable" to "Nigger is okay for some and not okay for others and the line is not always clear", so I think with or without Chappelle you would see white people use it "the wrong way".         "Does Wayne Brady have to choke a bitch?" was funny because it took a seemingly harmless guy and made him hysterically dangerous. So frat boys were quoting that right.
        
        "I'm Rick James, bitch!" was funny because it had a larger-than-life figure abusing his position of privilege to be as big a dick as he could get away with. So the frat boys were quoting that one right, too.
        
        So when Chappelle said that he hated having people walk up to him and say, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" it made no sense to me. Maybe hating it because it would get really OLD makes sense. Hating it because white kids were saying it made no sense.

  I notice much less taboos than I used to. Sex- and race-based stereotypes are used in humorous ways way more often than they used to be. The 90s and early 2000s were practically sterile compared to what's on television and in films now. Just compare it at some point.

    Decent breakdown here. I am concerned about the 2013 defense cuts being taken out and skeptical that we can provide Congressional level health insurance to all senior currently on Medicare for cheaper than Medicare. As if the fraud and waste of that level of spending is going to vanish.

Completely OT: what is better with a big ol' roast beef: Mustard sauce or bleu cheese dressing? I whisked together a mustard sauce with olive oil, brown mustard, cream, coriander, pinch of basil, and pinch of cumin. Kind of spicy. But there is also bleu cheese in the fridge. Just looking for opinions.

  I think Mustard would complement the beef better. If you had bleu cheese crumbles, I would have gone with that, but the dressing can be a little bit heavy and mask the flavor of the meat.
