Axl ate the rest of the band...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvs.....crowd.html
I can't believe he is showing up to concerts.
I wonder if he can still actually sing.
What do you mean still?
What do you mean still?
Well aren't you just chock full of meanness! Axl was a damned good singer back in the day. And by "day" I mean prior to 1990 or so.
I was a college freshman in 1988 - that caterwauling was in.es.cap.able in the dorms.
I once heard him described as 'the Ethel Merman of heavy metal'.
Damn you stole my line...
Welcome to the Jungle
I don't know what a git is but I'm going to refer to all the other commenters here as such.
Googled "define git".
All this time I've been thinking of everyone here as gits without even knowing the proper name. Thanks!
(You git.)
Bugger off.
Why is "define git" bringing up the definition of rotter? A git is a stupid person, usually cloddish and uncouth
thanks to years of Benny Hill, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Allo Allo, Black Adder, Are you Being Served, Good Neighbors, etc etc - I have a fairly good UK slang vocabulary.
Yeah, but do you 'ave any cunning plans?
More interestingly, does he have a turnip shaped like a thingy. Which is ironic, because...
Smeghead.
My brother saw them in Orlando last week and said it was 3 quality hours of GnR songs. Even if Axl is suffering from being old and fat.

Police chief sends armed messenger to reporter's home to intimidate him into changing his story.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new.....story.html
Armed should be the norm, not the shock.
This is a fundamentally appalling and chilling action on the part of a police chief and it should be a firing offense without so much as a second thought. Especially, for the love of god, in Berkeley.
Especially since the officer was sent to the guy's house around midnight.
What makes you think Berkeley has a problem with police? As long as they swing the truncheon with their left hand, that is.
The Free Speech movement was over 40 years ago, after all.
The 12:45 AM part is what makes it beyond the pale. A phone call during the day would've at least given the impression of some vague professionalism.
Should have called 911 and said there was someone at his door impersonating a cop.
The comments are good, especially the highest rated one. (I had a lot of time on my hands this weekend)

Look at the little hipsters gambol about the movie set. So cute.
It's doubly wrong because they're not even real hipsters. They're poseur hipsters. So much worse.
Does she think they crucified Jesus sideways or something?
So, is she expecting warm and sunny or a freakin' blizzard?
How are people supposed to know she's a skank if you take away her right to wear ugly boots when it's neither cold nor wet?
Oh that's easy.
Well then the boots are just overkill.
On a slightly different note, doesn't it seem a bit strange that she seems to have named most of her clothes?
I don't get your obsession with the chubby pre-teen.
that's when the fat is beautiful?

Yet another high speed rail scheme.
Ah, another scam from "the inventors of the 'magnetic levitation'."
And the:
is a hell of a stretch too. After fifty years and billions in subsidies all there is to show for all practical purposes are some theme park rides. The few local shuttles that use it for actual transportation would run just as well and much more cheaply on normal wheels and with conventional motive power.
I'm just going to state for the record that building a 50 mile tall railroad track is the hard (read currently impossible) part of this idea. It would only be 25 times higher than any other manmade structure, and verges on space-elevator level of dependence on unobtanium as a requisite material.
AP Analysis: Shootings Complicate Afghanistan Mission. Also, Shoes Should Probably Be Worn on Feet.
Not necessarily - they can be worn on the ears quite fashionably.
I think speaks to Welch's comment recently on some channel, Fox maybe. He made the point about the President being an anecdote President, I believe. I think that can be extended to the media and members of Congress. The actions of a lone solder probably should not alter your opinion of the war too greatly. Granted, I think the fact that there's now a horrifying face to the concept of war-weariness will have a silver lining, but it will still be politicians doing what politicians usually do: buckling themselves into their seat in congress and riding the wind of public opinion.
Describing U.S. forces as "sick minded American savages," the Taliban said in a statement on its website that it would mete out punishment for the "barbaric actions."

I luv the smell of facepalm in the morning.
I miss being able to facepalm.
Why was I murdered, again? I'm still not clear on the details.
One imagines demented laughter at the Taliban PR offices when that one went out.

Feminist hand-wringing over alimony reform in Massachusetts
The new law decides whether alimony will be granted, if at all, based not on a wide variety of criteria -- such as the value of the nonworking spouse's contributions to the marriage -- but on how many years the couple stayed married and how much money the working spouse made during the marriage. And it won't last a lifetime. If a marriage lasted 15 years, a woman will receive alimony, at most, for only 10? years.
It's craziness. The Massachusetts legislature has effectively embraced a policy declaring that being married is roughly akin to working in state government. The more years you log, the bigger your pension, and if you make it to certain cut-off periods, you get a larger sum.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/09/.....index.html
From the comments:
"I never, ever met a false rape claim, by the way. My own statistics speak to the truth."
"I bet one or more of the players was, you know, molested or something as a child."
"To suggest [the indicted players] were well behaved: Hitler never beat his wife either. So what?"
These three quotes are from Wendy Murphy concerning the Duke Lacrosse case. She deserves to be banished from both academia and the media.
10 1/2 years is still crazy.
I think 5 years should be the limit. That's enough time to get a degree and find a job.
You don't need a degree to be a stripper, you just need to pretend you're working towards one.
The Massachusetts legislature has effectively embraced a policy declaring that being married is roughly akin to working in state government. The more years you log, the bigger your pension, and if you make it to certain cut-off periods, you get a larger sum.
In other words, this may be the first time they got something right.
What's really disgusting here is that the feminist whining on display is actually even more false than usual.
It's just a cover for divorce court lawyer rent seeking.
The Massachusetts divorce courts have been judicially terminating lifetime alimony one case at a time for years. But you have to pay one of the bar's well-connected divorce lawyers to bring your case moving for an alimony adjustment.
The legislature wants to regularize what's happening anyway in courts. But the lawyer lobby doesn't want that to happen, because they want to make sure they get their cut from everybody in every last case.
Looks like a bonafide attempt to objectify. "How many years the couple stayed married and how much money the working spouse made" are real; "the value of the nonworking spouse's contributions" is as subjective as "the best years of my life".
Legislatures are the best at commodifying the value of marriage.
Sex and house work don't come cheap.
The idea of sex and house work don't come cheap.
Marriage doesn't guarantee either one.
"It's craziness. The Massachusetts legislature has effectively embraced a policy declaring that being married is roughly akin to working in state government."
Sounds like a sensible law, what's the problem.
Sounds like a sensible law, what's that's the problem.
FTFY
As someone going through a divorce in MA (I sued for divorce 24 months ago - trial is scheduled in three months) I can tell you that this law made the place far less misandronystic.
Essentially under the old scheme, once she put the ring on, the man was expected to support he forever, and give her a substantial portion of his income, forever.
The new system is far better. My ex is no longer going to get an automatic pass despite all the crazy self-destructive shit she pulled.
"it's not the other inmates you have to watch out for - it's the guards."
kinda says it all
While I oppose the Viagra Bill it does seem like poetic justice to me. If the government is going to keep telling women that their bodies are State property then maybe men should give up some of their reproductive freedom as well.
By the way, if men could get pregnant, there'd be as many abortion clinics as there are gas stations.
Prescription for Viagra. That's where it went wrong.
The fact that you need to get a prescription for Viagra in the first place is where this whole stupid argument falls apart.
Will the Catholic Church reimburse me for all my visits to unregistered sex therapists?
The fact that you need to get a prescription for Viagra in the first place is where this whole stupid argument falls apart.
At least most doctors recognize how retarded this is and will prescribe it pretty much on request.
Poetic justice maybe, but still a very immature response by a lawmaker. It's one thing to make a comparison, it's another to actually introduce the legislation. Of course she's from Cleveland so I wouldn't expect anything more intelligent.
Poetic justice maybe, but still a very immature response by a lawmaker.
I disagree.
The left gave us comprehensive enslavement of the professions, including the practice of medicine.
The right said, "Well, if doctors are our slaves, let's use that regulatory power to be dicks about abortion."
In such a context, coming up with ever more absurd and abusive regulatory micromanagements of the practice of medicine is the appropriate response. Fuck it, let's do this.
I think I'm with you here. If stuff like this is going to keep being pushed to the point of absurdity then lets go with it. Push this shit so far overboard people start paying attention.
I think you are far too optimistic Sparky. People will just take it. I would love to believe there is a "had enough" point. But I doubt it. At most people will just ignore it. And the law will be selectively enforced giving petty tyrants even greater power.
I would love to believe there is a "had enough" point.
I gave up on that idea when the whole allergy medicine police state was put into effect with barely a peep of protest.
There is no "had enough" point. What happens is when they do something crazy, they just don't enforce it universally so most people don't notice. But since the law is there, they can selectively enforce it, which is even better for petty tyrants.
"There is no "had enough" point."
John making a fool of himself again.
Griefer,
Have you accepted Jesus as your personal savior? Have you thought about it? Maybe that is where all this anger comes from. Jesus loves you you know.
I must have missed the announcement where the various legislators responsible for those acts swore to never, ever, ever try something like that again, as well as the bit where the corporate supporters of PIPA and SOPA agreed it was a horrible idea and that they pinky-swore to forgo similar acts in the future.
I understand that it's actually apocryphal, but the "frog slowly boiled" problem tells me people won't pay attention.
But that's what I'm trying to get at. Don't let it happen slowly, start fast-tracking every idiotic law that comes out. And make sure everyone knows exactly where it came from.
Are you serious?
Sparky & Fluffy want to throw that frog in to an already boiling pot.
It's obviously just a stupid stunt to make a point. There is zero chance that this law passes.
There is zero chance that this law passes.
I'd be willing to bet against you on that.
"Stupid STunt." Got it. Badly misread that at first glance. Although it may have been more accurate the other way.
If men could get pregnant they would be women.
and we'd stop for directions.
Wow, SO clever! It certainly cannot be the case that abortion just is not that popular, even among those who believe it should be legal, and that the (admittedly distorted)market would not support abortion clinics popping up like weeds. No, no, it must be THE PATRIARCHY.
Well, doubling the number of potential customers should increase the number of abortion clinics at least a tad.
And men would be much worse at abstinence, and/or at remembering to take the pill every day. So if men could get pregnant you'd probably see more than a straight doubling of the abortion rate.
Imagine if gay male sex could produce pregnancy. That would probably quintuple the number of abortions right there alone.
Are we assuming that men cannot go on the same birth control as women? Because I would agree with you if it was the case that BC only worked for women.
Imagine if gay male sex could produce pregnancy. That would probably quintuple the number of abortions right there alone.
Probably so. I don't know much about anal childbirth, but that shit must HURT.
I see what you did there.
Well, now this is getting silly.
So if men could get pregnant you'd probably see more than a straight doubling of the abortion rate.
No, if men could get pregnant, they'd start acting more like women.
Having to carry a fetus for 9 months inside you gives someone a much different set of incentives than being able to fuck and then leave.
Women are more anti-abortion than men.
Oh god. It's starting, isn't it.
Who are you trying to impress with this white knight schtick? Getting awfully beta in here.
Ha!
While we're on the subject, does Obamacare require my employer to provide me with free Viagra, with no contribution or copays allowed?
I refuse to allow the Republicans to toy with men's health!
Afaik, it doesn't supply condoms for men though.
If the government is going to keep telling women that their bodies are State property
You mean by treating recreational contraception as a matter of public concern and thus public funding?
Are you really going with the retarded, "If men could get pregnant" line? Like the "If men could get periods" people who like to say Christianity would be super different as a result.
Look, no one is claiming state ownership of women's bodies. There is a pretty lively debate, however, if a right to abortion or contraception corresponds with a right for the state, or an employer, to pay for it. It is a debate about positive v. negative liberties and the extent of religious freedom, NOT about women.
The whole "This is a war on women" is a stupid and false dichotomy that has been created because it is a simpler (read: dumber and easier) debate to have than the actual debate here.
It's also because liberals are obsessed with identity politics. I'm surprised that no one has said it's racist.
I think some people are putting it in the context of some of the legislation going through some states which aim to lower access to abortion and such.
Yeah, but even then, it's a stupid reduction of the debate over what, if any, are the rights possessed by fetuses (which are, scientifically speaking, both human and alive). It's not like the pro-life types hate women: they just legitimately believe that personhood is bestowed at or near conception. It's also not like the pro-choice types hate babies- they just do not see the rights of the fetus being on par with the right of the mother especially when the fetus is not viable outside of the womb. But instead of having a mature, adult conversation about that, we are reduced to "baby killers" and "misogynists" when that isn't really what either side believes.
No, while its overblown and oversimplified, it's a fair reading that some pro-life sentiment is tied into control over women's sexuality.
I mean, look at Santorum's comments about all this, even about just birth control for Pete's sake.
It's also certainly fair for the women to see it that way, since if they are right the result would be to increase the costs of sexual autonomy.
Eh, I feel like the Santorum types aren't exactly in love with men having premarital sex either. They believe in an idealized past where people didn't smoke the devil weed and the worst teenagers did was make out on lover's lane, when in point of fact there were whores and opium dens.
Sure, but often their concern with abortion and bc seems to intertwine "health of woman" "life of fetus" and "control of sexuality." to that extent I can see why women react how they do to it as "anti-woman."
You have to see that for many women reproductive control is a health issue, they see a woman's health and opportunties as greatly diminished if they can't control when they get pregnant. Since that hits women they see proposals that would diminish that as "attacks on women." Is it overblown and hysterical at times, yeah, but it certainly has a reasonable kernel at its core sometimes...
if they can't control when they get pregnant
I'm pretty sure women can do this without anything that requires a prescription.
Now, now, MiNGe. Let's not forget that Santorum is an idiot. I'd rather talk about the views of pro-lifers that aren't pandering to the extremist bible-thumpers in an effort to salvage his campaign.
There's a pretty strong correlation between bible thumping and being pro-life in our society, though I readily concede that connection is certainly not logically necessary.
I'd have agreed with you 20 years ago, but not now as much. People change their views on abortion the more info is put out about it. Not to mention, now that medical advances have helped babies survive from much earlier in pregnancies, people by and large want to push back the "abortion-on-demand" timeframe.
Of course, I'm apparently a bible-thumping moron who doesn't have any intellectual curiosity anymore because I believe in God. At least that's what I was told over and over and over again this weekend.
Actually, I don't think this bill is a response to the required contraception coverage debate.
It's a response to the required ultrasound for an abortion debate.
The people bitching about the ultrasound laws are in fact correct when they say that these laws are abusing the power the state has claimed to regulate the practice of medicine in order to attempt to achieve an unrelated policy end.
The problem is that they can't see that the presence of that regulatory power means we now will get to haggle over that power's proper use for fuckingforevermore.
To some extent the state claims ownership of everyone's bodies. I happen to believe that if you own your own body, you have the right to expel any other people or organisms which are living inside of you, so I would say that in cases where laws intending to restrict abortion are in place, teh state tries to control women's bodies a bit more.
But al long as you are not allowed to sell your body parts, or modify them in any way, or sell your body as a prostitute the state is claiming at least partial ownership of your body. If you can't sell something, then it's hard to say it is your property.
I keep wondering how the debate would go if they changed the abortion procedure from killing the fetus to just removing it from the mother.
I keep wondering how the debate would go if they changed the abortion procedure from killing the fetus to just removing it from the mother.
That, for me, is where the debate logically goes once you embrace the notion that people have self-ownership, and so that ownership means someone can't dictate that you carry a fetus inside you.
That is, a woman has the right to get a fetus out of her body, at any stage of development, but she has to take the precautions to get it out alive if that is possible. Once out of her body, if the baby can survive, then some fundies can adopt it if they really believe in the sanctity of life.
That is, from the moment of conception, a fetus is a human being with the right to life, but NOT the right to reside within its mother's body. If she chooses to remove it, and it is too early in the developmental process to survive, then that's tough for the fetus, but self-ownership means the right to life doesn't confer the right to demand non-consenting others take care of all of your needs.
I hope she's worth it bra.
Gloria Allred: Jail Rush Limbaugh for 'slut' comments
In a letter dated March 8, Allred, writing on behalf of the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund, requested that Palm Beach County State Attorney Michael McAuliffe probe whether the conservative radio personality had violated Section 836.04 of the Florida Statutes by calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke the two derogatory words.
The statute stipulates that anyone who "speaks of and concerning any woman, married or unmarried, falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity" is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree. Allred explained that the statute recently came to her attention as having never been repealed, and that it could very well apply to Limbaugh's remarks as his show is broadcast from West Palm Beach.
http://www.politico.com/news/s.....73829.html
I'm sure there are a few old Jim Crow era laws still technically on the books in Florida as well. Would Ms. Allred like to see those enforced again as well?
Would that trial not be the circus of the year.
a want of chastity
Nice band name.
Rush isn't someone I have much use for, but:
falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity
It's an "and" not an "or." Rush might be guilty of the latter, but she stipulated the former in her testimony.
Curses!
Besides, the law might be on the books in Fla, but I'd bet you'd have a hard time getting a jury that would convict Rush Limbaugh anywhere in the state. Except maybe Broward or Leon County, that is. 🙂
All a prosecution like this would do is give Rush's ratings a boost.
I would take vacation time and pay good money for a pay-per-view feed of Fluke on the stand, under oath, testifying about her sex life in that trial.
Did she? Chastity is not the same as virginity.
I do think it woudl be hilarious to hear arguments in court over whether or not this woman is indeed a slut.
She claimed that she needed $1000 per year for contraception. That doesn't sound like simply losing ones virginity. She is a 30 year old woman who is not married but claims she requires this much for contraception? No way one could honestly call that "chaste".
Holy shitsnacks she was clearly talking about the Birth Control Pill, which has no bearing on chastity whatsoever.
Jesus Christ.
"the Birth Control Pill, which has no bearing on chastity whatsoever."
HEY GUYS! SOMETHING THAT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS THE CONSEQUENCES OF UNPROTECTED SEX HAS NO BEARING ON ONE'S WILLINGNESS TO HAVE SEX!
Jesus Christ is right, how fucking stupid are you?
No body pays 1k a year for the pill. To reach that kind of level of spending on bc you either have to be buying a shit ton of condoms or getting an IUD put in.
After a lone U.S. soldier allegedly murdered 16 Afghan civilians Saturday night, the Taliban vows revenge.

This revenge would probably feel a little more pure if revenge rioting wasn't also used for things like Koran burning.
Now that makes me REALLY angry!

Second Amendment Quiz. I missed two questions. But I still think the second amendment does allow people to own automatic weapons.
For now
I do think the 2A does protect the right to posess machine guns. The current registration regime is on shaky ground, especially the '86 ban on newly manufactured MGs.
I only 'missed' the one about the 2nd Amendment allowing automatic weapons and grenade launchers. The quiz confuses court decisions with the actual amendment.
Yes, I give the CSM 11/12.
11/12, not counting #10 which is a matter of opinion, imho
Same here. I went with "impossible to know." I think the Miller casts real doubt on the validity of current full-auto rules, since they are clearly relevant to militia service.
12/12, guessed right on #10.
My personal line on "arms" is single man carry and fire without support infrastructure.
But that might not supported by the document, but seems like a reasonable way to draw the line -- something an individual can bear and fire.
So, is a 240 or an M60 okay under your rule? Or not?
The M60 can be fired without using the supports, so Yes. More GIS results show this. Ditto for the 240.
I was referring to weaponry that requires an infrastructure and/or crew -- I think that makes it artillery instead of arms. But Im no military weaponry expert.
Saw a show recently on the teevee about various rocket-propelled munitions. RPGs, etc., that were essentially one-man artillery.
Useful to a militia? Most certainly. Covered by the 2A? I suppose. Makes even me a little nervous, though.
But, me being nervous is no reason to deny you a Constitutional right.
I think one thing to keep in mind is that I'm sure there are many such devices in private hands illegally, but I've never heard of a single instance of their use in the US.
Not one.
That's because the government is covering it up, man!
The ATF doesn't want the people figuring out that they are in bed with big gun!!!
What about the plane that hit the Pentagon on 9/11, Fluffy? I heard that was from an RPG.
You mean Justified isn't a documentary about Kentucky hillfolk? No one is actually using RPGs to rob banks?
I am disappoint.
I love that show.
someone mentioned that the original Revolutionary Army used privately owned cannons. I suppose that would be the modern equivalent.
Sure, cannons were owned privately, especially on privately owned merchant ships. So I would guess that the 2nd Amendment was also intended to apply to crew-served weapons.
Not necessarily.
For example, the KY constitution has freedom to open carry, however concealed carry isnt covered. The legislature has allowed concealed carry.
So, the 2A could not apply to crew-served weapons but congress and/or the states could still allow private ownership of them.
The use of private cannons in the Revolution doesnt prove anything one way or the other (other than allowing private ownerhsip of cannons is a good idea).
The multiple choices are just taking the piss. Starsky v Hutch as the landmark 2008 Sup Ct case?
There was a link on that page to the 96 questions on a citizenship test. Got 94 out of 96 right (screwed up on the length of terms for Reps and Senate). I am not American. God, I feel so fucking smug right now
U.K.: Christians do not have a right to wear a cross or crucifix openly at work, the Government is to argue in a landmark court case.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new.....nment.html
Only if that includes ALL displays of religion... including kippot for Jews and hijabs for Muslims. But, it probably won't. If a business doesn't want you to wear them to work, either abide or find another job.
The Government's official response states that wearing the cross is not a "requirement of the faith" and therefore does not fall under the remit of Article 9.
No it wouldn't cover those. Yeah, it really is just a bunch of prick English school boys taking it out on Christianity.
I guess atheists can't show up to work wearing nothing.
ok, I lol'd
He's infectious.
The hijab isn't a religious symbol, per se. Certainly not as an equivalent of a crucifix.
On the other hand, as stated below, the crucifix isn't a requirement of the faith.
This is a pretty stupid idea on several counts.
Interesting parallel to this case but wearing a cross isn't necessarily even a religious statement
It's still OK to wear my "Chuck You, Farley" t-shirt, though, right?
Meanwhile, you cannot make a Sikh wear a hard hat on a construction site if he is wearing a turban. They also get an exemption from wearing motorcycle helmets, too.
everyone should get an exemption from wearing a motorcycle helmet.
You Sikh bastard.
What if I'm a hipster and I wear my cross ironically?
then I'll ironically kick your hipster ass... or is getting your ass kicked too mainstream for you?
I was getting my ass kicked before it was cool.
I think a business should be able to set their own dress code. It's a pretty dick thing to do, but it's their business.
Unless I'm wrong and it's the government telling businesses they have to enforce a dress code. Then I'd have to say "fuck you very much".

Microcredit doesn't end poverty, despite all the hype
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....story.html
...
Some people do better after getting a small business loan, while some do worse ? but very few climb into the middle class.
I don't think that "climbing into the middle class" is the right standard of judgment.
If I could wave my hand and make everyone globally who lives on a dollar a day or less suddenly have five dollars a day, they wouldn't jump into the middle class. But I would have fundamentally improved the human condition on a Borlaugian scale.
Hmm. Not really. Mostly all you would achieve is 500 percent inflation.
No.
I'm talking about a hand wave that increases the productivity of the dollar-a-day population. Not an income transfer.
You're talking about magic. TANSTAAFL.
Hence the phrase "hand wave", ya pedantic douche.
"Hand wave."
Hence the phrase "you're talking about magic," moron.
You are either new and did not know that Fluffy would know it's magic, or you're a condescending moron.
I'll be charitable and assume you're new. Fluffy knows it's magic, hence "hand wave", thereby rendering your "TANSTAAFL" comment totally superfluous.
hth, as they say.
Hence you're focusing on the wrong part of the post.
LH posted a link saying that microcredit isn't moving large numbers of people into the middle class.
I countered that huge income improvements aren't actually necessary, because improvements in the lowest incomes substantially improve human well-being, even if the new, higher incomes still aren't "middle class".
To illustrate this point I asked LH to imagine the magnitude of improvement in the living conditions of the world's poorest people you would achieve if you could raise them to the rather paltry level of $5 a day.
Your response was also just incorrect. A little more than a billion people worldwide live on around $1 a day. Raising their incomes to $5 a day would increase global income by $1.46 trillion. That's less than the GDP of California. Adding a California to the world economy would not increase inflation to 500%.
Math problem?
Wouldnt it increase global income by about $4 billion?
That's per day.
Math easy. Time hard.
$5 a day, rob. 365*5*1 billion.
Sheesh, what do they teach you people at GATech?
In any event, I get $1.8 trillion plus the opportunity to mock you both for poor math skills.
~365*4*~1
I may not know the difference between a day and a year, but I know 5-1=4, not 5.
Heh. MATH FIGHT!
No, they already have $1 a day. So the increase would be $4 a day. 365*4*1 billion.
phew, now I'm sorry I posted the link.
My hand waving is more powerful than Fluffy's and gives them $6 a day. My hands are larger, you see. They move the aether with more vigor, producing better results.
"Sheesh, what do they teach you people at GATech?"
If it's robc we're talking about, they seem to have taught him to be loud wrong and proud as often as possible.
In all seriousness, he rivals John for sheer number of half-researched comments that he's absolutely sure he's right about but isn't.
"Dozens of Iraqi teenagers stoned to death for 'emo' haircuts"

I fail to see the problem.
The statement said that Iraq's Moral Police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with Western appearances.
Nearly a decade of nation building, and this is what we are leaving behind. A government that sends grown men to round up teenagers who don't dress right and kill them. Fuck anyone who says Iraq was a success.
Iraq is one of our greatest achievements.
I thought it was Dubya's fault.
Mission Accomplished!
I thought it was Dubya's fault.
Only the bad parts.
So all of it?
"The 'Emo phenomenon' or devil worshiping is being probed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate it as soon as possible since it's detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger," according to a statement by the interior ministry.
And history repeats itself. Again.

Meh, they've been making noises for the last 25 years or so about bringing back the Fairness Doctrine, all to no avail. Personally, I kind of like it when they show their true colors with regard to free speech.
But we can say whatever we want, therefore FREE SPEECH! Your icky speech represents oppression.
I think it's more frightening that they might actually believe "This isn't political". And by "frightening" I mean a "psychotic lack of insight".

We've already taken a hit to our right to due process thanks to the NDAA, and our right to assemble has been drastically undermined thanks to HR-347...I can't imagine a world without our right to free speech.

Exactly. My daughters were told to say "I'm not going to answer any questions until my Dad is here. Should I call him or will you?" if someone who worked at the school asked about anything not related to their schoolwork or if the questions made them uncomfortable.
One of them said that one time and the principal said something like, "No, that's OK, go on back to class."

Something irksome about this to me. I think it's that so many legislators and governors deserve prison time for outright corruption but don't get it while making and signing laws to send so many fellow citizens to prison for doing far less, for victimless crimes.

Here's a tip: if you're not married after 14 years there's a reason.
If you're a wealthy actor living in California (as I assume they do), then you've got a great reason right off the bat not to get married, ever.
Probably also a great reason to not be having children.
she starting wondering why she and boyfriend of 14 years, Mad Men star Jon Hamm, 41, had not yet had children.

"Perhaps because she's been taking the pill the entire time?"
How can she afford it, without the gubmint paying for it?
You assume it's the man who doesn't want to get married?
Nope, my assertion is just that she shouldn't be wondering why there's no kids after they've been together 14 years without getting married.

(1) The dark meat is quite similar to shoe leather. I don't even bother with it any more. I just breast the damn things, toss the carcass where I have a good line of sight, and bring my coyote shooter then next morning.
(2) The white meat is drier than you expect. Brine it if you want to cook the breast whole. Otherwise, sausage or some kind of stew or casserole.

Disapproval of President Obama's handling of the economy is heading higher ? alongside gasoline prices ? as a record number of Americans now give the president "strongly" negative reviews on the 2012 presidential campaign's most important issue, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Yes, the price of gas is like the price of bread in earlier times because the price of gas is the price of bread. And the price of everything else.

I wonder what Nicolas Sarkozy would think of the occupy movement? Thought this bit was funny:
On a recent campaign visit to the Pyrenees region of southern France, the president-candidate had little sympathy for a dairy farmer's wife and her complaints of hardship.
When she remarked she and her husband could not afford the luxury of a 35-hour working week, Mr Sarkozy retorted: "Me neither!"
"But we don't have what you have in the bank," she replied. "We have nothing... we're living from hand to mouth."
"And I don't own 40 hectares. OK?" Mr Sarkozy said, clearly annoyed, and tapping her husband on the chest.
HA! That's awesome.
You tell em, Nicky boy!
Also, as someone who does amateur stand up comedy, this whole Bill Maher thing is really worrying.
Yes, I get the idea: Liberals get sponsors to turn on Rush for calling a woman a slut and a prostitute. Well, Maher has said just the same if not worse, as has Louie C.K.
But here's the thing: You've always been able to go blue in comedy if you are funny. White guys can and do still make racial jokes, provided they tell them right. Comedians seem to be some of the only people in the world right now who can use the word faggot without people freaking the fuck out. And one of the reasons I love South Park is their philosophy of "No Cow too sacred".
But it appears as a society we are moving towards more words/subjects being taboo, towards more getting butthurt at every slight, and towards being more political and partisan, and I guess I simply do not see that as progress.
That is exactly what is happening. The problem is that if you don't go after Maher and Louis CK (whoever that is) in response to the Left going after Limbaugh, you end up with the worse situation of their being no standards except one side can say whatever it wants and the other side cannot.
And that's a fair enough point. But how about we recognize that Maher is preaching to his flock, while Rush is preaching to his, and if you don't listen to them, well then it is none of your business what they or their flock do if it doesn't fuck with you. If it offends your sensibilities, stfu.
Because thanks to the brilliance of the left, people believe that Rush is actually a mouthpiece for conservatives. His speech is considered political speech not entertainment. That ship sailed a long time ago.
I agree.
The left is always going to be for more censorship than the the right, because the First Amendment is in the Constitution.
Is Maher something like the equivalent to Dems or liberals as Rush is to conservatives or the GOP?
Team blue doesn't have any one asshole as big as Rush.
I'm not sure it's even about "as big as." Rush himself sees himself as one of the big voices of movement conservatism and aligned with the GOP/conservatism, I don't see that in Maher. If you listen to Rush, and I do, he actually says things like "I'm not going to criticize any GOP nominee too much because I want to be able to support them for the ultimate goal of defeating the Democrat candidate in Nov." I'm not aware of Maher aligning himself in his "act" with any side that explicitly. And then there is the other side, how much they are then embraced by the relevant sides.
Does his "act" include million dollar checks to PACs?
What does any of that have to do with taking him to task for being a misogynist like Rush?
the thing that many libs edon't get about rush is that it's a SCHTICK, to an extent, he does it often self-referentially and with winking humor
libs think conservatives incapable of humor, irony, or parody.
i find rush boring as fuck, but to some extent he plays it for theatre, and he knows it drives libs crazy.
one could argue he went overboard with the fluke thing.or not but when a little reference gets gloria allred (apparently, seriously) calling for your prosecution for defaming a woman it is CLEARLY a win
the whole "lord make my enemies" ridiculous thing. rush MAKES them ridiculous, or better makes them look more ridiculous than him
he clearly enjoys it and anybody who pisses off libs, and turns them even more into sputtering self-rightous frothing at the mouth idiots deserves respect.
No longer does the word "freedom" refer to liberty.
Rather it means being free from having one's fragile insecurities offended, achieved by imposing restrictions on the liberty of others.
That, and getting free shit.
Way more free shit.

Why do you hate homosexuals?
I don't. With proper use of lube, buttsex doesn't hurt.
Hmm...
Sometimes I think maybe we have gone too far with the humor, though. I know that makes me a prig, but Dave Chappelle saw where it led, and I get concerned about the same sorts of things.
I've always disagreed with Chappelle's walking away because people were laughing at his jokes for "the wrong reason". It'd be like an artist no longer painting because, "Man, I wanna bang that Lisa Mona broad."
Hey, I get it. It's like what happens when you are "ironically" doing this thing or that (like "ironically" saying something is "gay" or "jokingly" ribbing your black friend in a stereotypical way) and you do it so well that it the "irony" is lost and people think you actually racist/trashy/homophobic.
Chapelle walked away because he had a psychotic break and became unreliable. Hollywood hates it when you can't show up on set because you're drunk/stoned/crazy. Anything else you may have read is a gloss over that inconvenient fact.
I am inclined to take Chappelle at his word:
Source.
I think it would bother me if racist yokel fratboys took my sketches as an excuse to use the word "nigger" in a derogatory tone. "Hey, Chappelle does it, so HURR DURR I can too!"
I think that has some merit, but that is also kind of a problem in general in our world. "Oh, if you're gay, you can say faggot" "Oh, if you're black, you can say nigger".
We've gone from, "Nigger is not acceptable" to "Nigger is okay for some and not okay for others and the line is not always clear", so I think with or without Chappelle you would see white people use it "the wrong way". Also, if Chappelle feels it is such a bad word, he himself should not use it.
The funny thing about that Chappelle thing to me was that I always thought frat boys were taking his sketches exactly as he intended them.
"Does Wayne Brady have to choke a bitch?" was funny because it took a seemingly harmless guy and made him hysterically dangerous. So frat boys were quoting that right.
"I'm Rick James, bitch!" was funny because it had a larger-than-life figure abusing his position of privilege to be as big a dick as he could get away with. So the frat boys were quoting that one right, too.
So when Chappelle said that he hated having people walk up to him and say, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" it made no sense to me. Maybe hating it because it would get really OLD makes sense. Hating it because white kids were saying it made no sense.
I thought that he was tired of those two phrases because they got old.
The racism angle I am talking about is the "reparations" sketch, where trucks of Kools are everywhere and KFC stock skyrockets. Suddenly it was OK for white people to talk about how much black people liked fried chicken and menthols.
Chappelle's intent was to lampoon the stereotypes and have fun with them. The white doucheboy contingent used it to bolster their own racism.
"Chappelle's intent was to lampoon the stereotypes and have fun with them. The white doucheboy contingent used it to bolster their own racism."
Well, that's certainly what Chappelle tried to get people to think.
Reality laughed in in face though.
chappelle and chris rock were unique in that they admitted that many stereotypes do have an element of truth behind them
like the black people and chicken, specifically fried chicken thing
it is a stereotype, but it is true that neighborhoods that disproportionately have a lot of black people disproportionately have more fried chicken joints, for example
and of course chris rock and chappelle can "get away" with confirming that some black stereotypes are true (in the aggregate) just like jewish comics can do with jewish stereotypes, white comics can do with redneck stereotypes, etc. etc.
the problem with stereotypes is when they are assumed about individuals. but as for aggregate tendencies, many of them are true, and clearly true merely by observation
i saw an interview with seattle legend sir mix-a-lot who will have people walk up to him, point at their wive's/girfriend's asses and ask for his approval.
"I am inclined to take Chappelle at his word:"
I'm not, specifically since that "word" has changed so frequently with regard to what happened.
The stress of creating got to him and he cracked. It's an open secret.
"I've always disagreed with Chappelle's walking away because people were laughing at his jokes for "the wrong reason". "
I have too, mostly because he was obviously full of shit and had run out of ideas.
i gotta agree with Wtf? chappelle's excuse was way to self serving and didn't fit the fact pattern.
You know I missed this, but I disagree with this entirely.
I notice much less taboos than I used to. Sex- and race-based stereotypes are used in humorous ways way more often than they used to be. The 90s and early 2000s were practically sterile compared to what's on television and in films now. Just compare it at some point.
the one place the sterility generally continues is on college campuses, often enforced by rule of law/admin code.
that is the place where we see it. all of FIRE's goodwork notwithstanding
New bill would require men seeking a Viagra prescription to "see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency."
Bold ideas like this are what have kept Cleveland at the forefront of the global economy.
yeah, I clicked on Sharon's link and was shocked... shocked I tell you!... to discover what demographic Nina was from.
Last point- will the left ever give up the Gabrielle Giffords thing? I still see things about how this is still the right wing's fault, and even if it isn't, well Arizona doesn't spend enough to help the mentally ill (which may or may not exist in this ablist society) but Arizona is run by Republicans so it was still their fault!
And that kind of shit seems honestly delusional. I haven't read about the Right treating Hinkley as anything but a nut, but Loughner was apparently motivated by right-wing rhetoric?
I have decided that team blue spews a never-ending stream of propaganda in about the same fashion as the old soviet union. Everything that comes out of their mouths is some bizarro distortion that serves one of their pet causes or demonizes their political enemies.
Talking to them is counter productive. After watching that for so long I have the urge now to just slap the fuck out of them and tell them to shut up before they even finish talking.
"After watching that for so long I have the urge now to just slap the fuck out of them and tell them to shut up before they even finish start talking."
Fixed.
True, no mention that Hinkley was trying to impress a lesbian feminist.
The thing is that the left are against guns. So anytime anyone misuses a gun, the shooter was a right wing redneck, or it didn't happen.
Every liberal I know will tell you as an article of faith that the rightwing killed Kennedy. The fact that Oswald was a communist angry at Kennedy's treatment of Cuba has gone down the memory hole.
But, but....that's not what Olive Stone said!
And Nixon started the Vietnam War.
try to get a liberal to admit that the greatest mass murder ever committed by a religious nut from the US (jonestown) involved a far leftist religious nut feted by the liberal politicos in san fran
well, at least until that pesky mass suivide thing
The surest way to know Loughner is a nut is that he hasn't figured out that he can milk a celebrity out of this by blaming right-wing brainwashing for his actions.
They probably think that if they keep repeating the lie often enough eventually it will become the truth. They don't seem to realize that it's not going to work this time. Too many people realize he was just a nutjob.
It worked with Silent Spring.

It's amazing how you sometimes come off as reasonable, but then disappear whenever a police abuse post comes op, only to reappear in later threads and deny that said abuse ever happened.
I wouldn't answer the door after midnight if I was that mayor.
He better not stomp any flaming bags he finds on his porch, neither.
Mayor suspends Chief and shuts down the PD.
Nice symbolic gesture, though it is a paid suspension, it turns out. I'll be impressed when the department is eliminated entirely and the officer in question is prosecuted.
In other words, I won' be impressed.

Only when the president is from TEAM BLUE. Then he can do the exact same shit as his "warmongering" "hitler-like" predecessor and get a fucking Nobel Peace Prize (before actually doing jack shit).
To be fair to the Nobel committee, they awarded him the Peace Prize then because they knew it would be the most peaceful portion of his presidency. They should be commended for their foresight in knowing he'd keep America in its then-current wars, and add some new ones.
Westboro Baptist Church Protests Radiohead Show: Hate Group Calls Them "Freak Monkeys With Mediocre Tunes"
Hmm. I'll have to review my stance on Radiohead, as I find myself agreeing with WBC.
Come on, I bet WBC is against child rape too. Somethings are just universal.
WBC against child rape? I wouldn't count on it.
Yea, I'm torn as well. As much as I dislike WBC, I fucking hate Radiohead.
i love Radiohead, but "freak monkeys" is excellent. They should do more music reviewing. Wonder what they think of the new Tindersticks album
I'd love to hear their thoughts on Oasis, with an emphasis on the infighting between Noel and Liam Gallagher that led to the band's eventual demise.
Oasis sucks my wonderballs.
oasis is/was a great band. not nearly as great as they think they are.
also, noel has shown great respect for johnny marr, one of the greatst living guitarists

Thank goodness for business casual.
In three weeks it'll be all the rage with stockbrokers trying to pick up cocktail waitresses. Fuck NYC's yuppie culture.
It's actually a Twilight fanfic. The author changed the names of the main characters so she could publish and make some money without getting sued by the Twilight author. Women who read this are basically grown up versions of Twilight obsessed tweeners.
No. They're not grown-up versions of the Twilight-obsessed tweeners. They're the grown-up Twilight-obsessed tweeners moving on to the next source of erotica to moisten their unused bits.
Did I miss the post where the budget hawks at Reason reviewed the DeMint/Paul Senate budget bill? Seriously, I'd like to know the good and bad about the bill, which looked more good than bad -- even if it has zero chance of being passed out of committee this session.
I want to hear about the "common sense exceptions."

No offense dude, but everyone knows that Max is H&R's Pet Yorkie. Whatever my differences with MNG, he's not nearly as bad as that.
Can't disagree with this. At least MNG can type complete sentences.
Decent breakdown here. I am concerned about the 2013 defense cuts being taken out and skeptical that we can provide Congressional level health insurance to all senior currently on Medicare for cheaper than Medicare. As if the fraud and waste of that level of spending is going to vanish.
Hmm, interesting. I like a lot of it actually, except yeah the Defense-Welfare stuff (probably had to have that to get DeMint to sign on, he likee military spending and such).
Here's another run down of it:

You're right, someone on Reason should analyze it for us.

I wonder who Tebow is voting for?
OK, now it's time...The Reason Hit & Run Superpimp March Madness Men's Basketball Pick-em is finally ready for your picks. So no more slacking off. We're up to 30 so far, and we could use a few more. And as always, it's free, anonymous and not nearly as annoying as our albino algonquin.
password is: reason.
Completely OT: what is better with a big ol' roast beef: Mustard sauce or bleu cheese dressing? I whisked together a mustard sauce with olive oil, brown mustard, cream, coriander, pinch of basil, and pinch of cumin. Kind of spicy. But there is also bleu cheese in the fridge. Just looking for opinions.
I think Mustard would complement the beef better. If you had bleu cheese crumbles, I would have gone with that, but the dressing can be a little bit heavy and mask the flavor of the meat.
If it were me, I would put them both out as dipping sauces and try each.
horseradish
I used to love horseradish. Then I started having problems - indigestion 🙁 - with spicy stuff. Haven't had it in years.
I find spicy food actually helps my digestion.
Agree about the helpfulness of spicy food, especially curry. Acidic food does the harm.
Bleu cheese lends itself more readily to dirty jokes. "Big ol' roast beef", indeed.
It's big alright! 😉 It's the largest roast I have ever cooked. It almost feels like there should be a special occasion.
mustard (or horseradish) + roast beef? Yum! Bleu cheese and roast beef? I just made a face.
Putting rotting cheese on a roast-beef sandwich is the surest way to ruin it. On the other hand, your mustard concoction sounds pretty good.
You're killin' me Smalls. All cheese is "rotten" in one way or another, and bleu cheese is awesome on beef. See: Bleu Cheese Burgers.
I vote for the mustard sauce.
I'd go for the mustard or a horseradish sauce. Lacking those a good creamy mayonaise-type sandwich spread like Miracle Whip and raw onions is pretty good on roast beef - especially roast beef that's been cooked on the pit.
Tonight, for my 80s 'goodness', I'll be watching The Sword and the Sorcerer.
Loved it when I was 13ish, but it has been 30 years since it came out.
Triple-bladed shooting swords FTW!

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Young people who identify themselves as so-called Emos are being brutally killed at an alarming rate in Iraq, where militias have distributed hit lists of victims and security forces say they are unable to stop crimes against the subculture that is widely perceived in Iraq as being gay.
Officials and human rights groups estimated as many as 58 Iraqis who are either gay or believed to be gay have been killed in the last six weeks alone - forecasting what experts fear is a return to the rampant hate crimes against homosexuals in 2009. This year, eyewitnesses and human rights groups say some of the victims have been bludgeoned to death by militiamen smashing in their skulls with heavy cement blocks

Ok, that's bad. But not as bad as people who don't want gays to marry. We need to set priorities here.
Young people who identify themselves as so-called Emos are being brutally killed at an alarming rate in Iraq,
I don't understand the problem.

BAN STAIRS!
Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.
Nice Mallrats reference.
Over and over, she kept reliving the terribly moment. 'I kept seeing us falling,' she said. 'I was carrying her down the steps and my flip-flop broke.'
BAN FLIP-FLOPS!
I think flip flops should be banned mostly b/c I hate to see people's toes in public. Especially men's toes.
I banned myself from wearing them after running around a hotel while wearing them and cracking my head on the corner of a wall.
Wat? In Florida, flip-flops are appropriate attire everywhere except indoor weddings and funerals, and any business meeting where the value on the line is greater than $50k.
One look that is very common here in Sydney through most of the year is women in business attire and flip-flops (they switch to real shoes once they're in the office). Man I hate that look
In my observation, business casual has come to allow "sandals" for women, which essentially means anything fancier than $3 flip-flops at work. I didn't say it looked good, just that it has become acceptable attire.
I'm not talking business casual, I mean skirt, blouse, matching jacket, handbag, full warpaint and... flip-flops. It's like the next step on from wearing sneakers with a ladies' suit. In Florida, your gear and footwear probably are more in sync

Andrea Yates edition.
if all goes well, Yates can one day fill the job that's been offered to her at an animal clinic. "She loves to work with animals," Parnham said.
Drowning puppies and kittens? I think she would prefer to work at Planned Parenthood.
Seriously, the shit those guys have to do to pets turned me away from that a looong time ago.
Also: Reminded of the story about that cat that got gassed 3 times and lived.
