Reason Writers Around Town: Peter Suderman HBO's Game Change in The Washington Times

|

Associate Editor Peter Suderman reviews Game Change, HBO's new film about the role of Sarah Palin in the 2008 presidential campaign, in The Washington Times

The narrative of HBO's "Game Change" will be familiar to anyone who followed the arc of the 2008 campaign season — so familiar, in fact, that it raises the question of why the movie was made.

Director Jay Roach and screenwriter Danny Strong offer a mostly respectful summary and recitation of a string of pivotal moments from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign, but little insight. Viewers will learn nothing that's genuinely new, nor see anything in a different light. To put it in the parlance of political pundits, the movie lacks vision.

Instead, it chases Sarah Palin, and the infinite loops of hype that have accompanied her every word and move since the 2008 campaign. "Game Change" presents itself as a sort of origin story — who she is and how she came to be. But the movie reveals more about the media's compulsive obsession with Mrs. Palin than it does about Mrs. Palin herself.

  1. Completely ignoring any political twists or spins on these movies, I just refuse to watch any “fictionalized” account of a real event that happened 25 minutes ago.

    1. Yeah, reliving the stupidity of 2008 is just what I want to do.

      1. What’s that other one that keeps popping up on HBO that I refuse to watch… something about the financial crisis? I get the impression it’s told like the sinking of the Titanic with pacing that might match And the Band Played On. Ah, I just googled it, Too Big to Fail.

I just can’t watch it… I can’t. I’m quite sure it will portray Paulson and Bernanke as heroes, and anyone against the American Structured Securities Rescue Act for a Prudent Economy and the subsequent bailouts as unorthodox whackos.

        1. Weren’t you inspired by Angels in America?

        2. I’m quite sure it will portray Paulson and Bernanke as heroes, and anyone against the American Structured Securities Rescue Act for a Prudent Economy and the subsequent bailouts as unorthodox whackos.

I see what you did there.

        3. ‘Too Big To Fail’. Its actually pretty faithful. They are not portrayed as heroes but as guys groping for a solution to something so severe it would burn the country up financially. More like a Titanic that is grounded on the rocks by an idiot administration but the passengers survive.

          1. But you were saying this morning TARP was horrible and Paulson evil. Can you decide on one of your personalities to be in control?

            1. You didn’t see the movie then. It ends well before TARP was passed.

It is that week in Sep 08 when everything fell apart.

Lehman, AIG, Merrill, Morgan Stanley, Goldman, Citi were all in it.

              Wall St version of Armageddon.

I can see why wingnuts don’t like it since its Wall St villains and not DC villains.

              1. I can see why wingnuts don’t like it since its Wall St villains and not DC villains.

I hate to break it to you but most of the Wall Street villains of 2008 got jobs as DC villains in 2009.

          2. I have to agree with shrike here. I watched it; looked to me like they played it pretty straight.

Seriously, give it a go. Its pretty good.

        4. American Structured Securities Rescue Act for a Prudent Economy

          Love it.

      2. Yeah, reliving the stupidity of 2008 is just what I want to do.

But you do do it (and so much more) here, every day.

    2. It just occurred to me–I wonder if this was produced solely to slime Sarah Palin in the assumption that she was going to run?

      1. I bet so. They are terrified and obsessed with her.

      2. Pre-Citizens United would have stopped this movie.

        1. I was thinking that, too.

        2. pfft..

They only go after hit pieces that attack democrats.

      3. “That just occurred to me”

That just occurred to you? Seriously?

  2. They cut out the part where she turned me into a Newt.

    1. Apparently it didn’t get better.

  3. Still don’t understand the Sarah Palin hatred, or why the mere mention of her name causes otherwise intelligent people to start foaming at the mouth. However, she dropped a few notches in my eyes when she admitting to voting for Newt the other day.

    1. She didn’t kill her retarded son. And she didn’t marry a beta male metro sexual. That is the only thing I can figure. It is her lifestyle that drives these people insane.

Otherwise, what exactly about her makes people so angry? It is astounding to me.

    2. I sometimes wonder if it’s because she had the temerity to be a woman in presidential politics without being a liberal feminist. I think the liberals think that’s their exclusive territory–the first woman President or VP can’t be anything but a feminist icon.

      1. I think you’re onto something there.

      2. That is a big part of it. Imagine the gnashing of teeth on Jezebel if a Conservative women became the first President? How can I tell my daughter to be proud and inspired by the President when its her!!!

        1. Progressives are such shallow creatures.

          1. They are not real big on thinking. Shrike sadly has about average intelligence for an Obama loving liberal.

      3. McCain didn’t choose one of the many qualified GOP women like a Whitman, Hutchinson, etc.

He pandered to the greasy-headed evangelical rednecks and it back-fired like it was destined to. That is why.

John thinks she is smart – enough said.

        1. I see you crawled out of your hole Shrike. Funny I didn’t see you on the thread about February deficit is the largest one month deficit in history.

I thought you were telling me that Obama had cut the deficit by a third? I think Obama fucked you didn’t even leave you cab fair.

          1. Adding 10,000 a day to SS/Medi and increasing interest payments on Treasuries just about insure y/y monthly record deficits until someone raises taxes or cuts real spending.

            1. But Obama was cutting the deficit. And you are small budget deficit Hayak loving capitalist right?

You should be outraged by this. How dare Obama.

        2. And Shrike I just think she is smarter than liberals. And since most liberals are like you and functionally retarded, that doesn’t mean she is smart.

          1. She lacks knowledge. McCain has lots of knowledge on government and world affairs. Since he is still kicking strong she would not have been needed.

But the country said – Too Big a Risk.

            1. So instead we elected the Hawaiian village idiot. Got it.

          2. functionally retarded

            Shrike is functional?

        3. “Hutchinson”

          Kay Bailey Hutchison

It’s HUTCHISON asshole. I didn’t spend 40 years in politics to have some little leftist poof run off like he knows me and get my name wrong.

Don’t act like you know me if you don’t even know my fucking name, you little worm.

          Now fuck off.

        4. “Hutchinson”

          Kay Bailey Hutchison

It’s HUTCHISON asshole. I didn’t spend 40 years in politics to have some little leftist poof run off like he knows me and get my name wrong.

Don’t act like you know me if you don’t even know my fucking name, you little worm.

          Now fuck off.

        5. “Hutchinson”

          Kay Bailey Hutchison

It’s HUTCHISON asshole. I didn’t spend 40 years in politics to have some little leftist poof run off like he knows me and get my name wrong.

Don’t act like you know me if you don’t even know my fucking name, you little worm.

          Now fuck off.

        6. “Hutchinson”

          Kay Bailey Hutchison

It’s HUTCHISON, you cunt. I didn’t spend 40 years in politics to have some little leftist poof run off like he knows me and get my name wrong.

Don’t act like you know me if you don’t even know my fucking name, you little worm.

          Now fuck off.

        7. qualified GOP women like a Whitman

I hope you mean Christie Whitman. We New Jerseyans could use a good laugh.

          1. In comparison to Snow Snooki she was qualified.

          2. Shrike just googled Republican and Woman and put down the first names that came up.

        8. Hutchison?

          BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah, that would have worked out so well for Johnny Mac. Even better than Palin!

        9. “McCain didn’t choose one of the many qualified GOP women”

Palin fit McCain’s I’m-willing-to-backstab-the-Republican-Party self-narrative. Too bad for McCain that he forgot that the first rule when choosing a running mate is to choose someone less charismatic than you. And he found out too late that Palin wasn’t just a cardboard cutout he could prop up on the campaign trail, point to and say, “Sarah puts Country before Party just like me.”

      4. It’s damn tragic that the first black president is a typical progressive asshole. Hope that does not get repeated with the first woman president.

      5. Don’t underestimate the degree to which women can get their hate on for another woman who is more attractive than they are.

    3. Still don’t understand the Sarah Palin hatred

Conservative Women, or hell even non-left wing women running for national office are a huge threat to the left wing.

If you do not see why then you have not been paying attention to the the gender voting split of the past 20 years.

If women voters can identify with conservative women candidates then it is game over for the democrat party.

  4. “Game Change”?

What exactly did she change? She didn’t help McCain win, and she’s more or less just another talking head now.

    1. This with knobs on. She holds no political office, and probably damn near zero influence on the modern political diatribe and yet people are still obsessed with her.

      1. People are obsessed with Limbaugh calling someone a slut, too. Maybe it’s because the retard partisans are so similar to each other that they need manufactured issues to prove to themselves that they’re not mirror images of each other.

        1. ANKUR BAYBEEEEZZ!!11!

        2. But in fairness to Limbaugh, he has a show… and people listen to it. Does Palin have anything right now? She had that reality show a year or so ago, but I’m guessing that’s not on anymore?

      2. A lot of people like her. Liberals and beltway conservatives hate her for the reasons I gave above and class snobbery. They cannot abide that someone from the middle class might actually wield any influence. They hate it. She is an abomination. She must be killed.

        1. Again, nothing new.

    2. McCain didn’t win because he was the drag on the ticket.

    3. What exactly did she change?

      2010 election.

Not to say she was the whole thing still she was part of it.

In the Red/Blue team universe when an opposing party takes the house and takes the governorships and gains majorities of state governments all over the county generally the Blue/Red teamers think it is a big deal.

      1. Bingo. Also, Palin did change the 2008 campaign momentum for a while. Before her addition to the ticket, BHO was going to walk all over McCain even without Paulson’s help.

  5. Related: NPR did an excellent report about a new book that just came out called Lifespan of a Fact.

The book details a highly embellished essay written by John D’Agata about a young teen who killed himself in Las Vegas.

It discusses the contentious relationship with truth and facts when an essayist is writing an impressionistic piece which tries to get a point across, but largely invents the surrounding details.

  6. I’d still hit Sarah Palin.

I wouldn’t vote for her. But I’d bang her. No problem.

    1. I’ve come to the conclusion that we ought to retire as meaningless the phrase “I’d hit that” and its relatives. All it seems to mean on this board is that the speaker is a hetero male. Congratulations, you’d have sex with a moderately attractive woman given the opportunity.

        1. I didn’t say I was offended, just that the expression is trite and boring. If you can’t tell the difference, I can’t help you.

          1. Looks like there are at least two people who thought you were offended. No, I don’t need any help clarifying the difference because you were offended. The proof is in the unfocused and poor choices in descriptors you used, such as ‘meaningless’ when there is clearly a meaning in Almanian’s statement, ‘and it’s relatives’, no one would use that phrase instead of the more accurate ‘similar phrases’ if they were not in a state of exasperation caused by being offended.

            1. “[N]o one would use that phrase instead of the more accurate ‘similar phrases’ if they were not in a state of exasperation caused by being offended.”

Really? Would you be offended if I went ahead and offered a [citation required] in rebuttal?

Whatever. It’s not worth even this much discussion – including my OP.

      1. Almanian said something nice and complementary about someone and you try to turn it into something offensive. Collectivist feminist have poisoned the well of public discourse. I don’t know why anyone would feel obliged to help them.

        1. See my reply to anonypussy above.

          1. I replied to your reply under the trite anonpussy reply.

          2. Don’t take it to heart though. I’m just fucking with you. Beer makes me mean. I should stop drinking.

            1. It was one of those days.

              1. It’s all good.

  7. When did Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson go bald, and why are they standing behind Sarah Palin?

    1. Woody Harrelson went bald about twenty years ago.

      1. Still Amazes me that Harrelson’s father was a psycho killer who died in super max.

        1. Even after Natural Born Killers and Zombieland?

        2. I didn’t know that. Makes his role in True Romance even more disturbing.

          1. Haha, wow, NBK I meant, shit.

      2. Ok, but that still doesn’t explain why they are standing behind Palin?

  8. Everything about this woman is already fictitiously scripted. Every word that comes from her mouth is bought and paid for. I don’t know if HBO can Sell Sarah better than she sells herself. She’s cut-throat when it comes to her money and you can see just how scandalous she’ll get for the cash with The Ecstasy of Sarah Palin at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot…..in_15.html Watch the cash rain down as she teases the public and bats her eyelashes for the green.

  9. The left hates Palin for the same reason they hate Condoleezza Rice. They think they should OWN the female vote, the black vote, and most especially the female black vote. Any woman who votes for the right is a traitorous backstabber who just wants women to be barefoot and pregnant all day.

  10. WARNING: If you go to the Times link to read the story, THERE IS NO CONTENT ON THE SECOND PAGE. It’s a trick Suderman is playing on you to get you to look at his pop-up.

  11. However, she dropped a few notches in my eyes when she admitting to voting for Newt the other day.

If you found yourself obligated to vote in a GOP primary because, e.g., you’re a famous Republican, and you wanted to send a not-Romney message because fuck that jerk and all his jerk buddies, and you’re not a law=morality asshole like Santorum, and you can’t safely affiliate with Paul anymore because he’s taken to saying too much dumb-college-freshman shit to please/milk his new Occupant fanbase, you’d be stuck voting for Noot, too.

Of course, not voting and saying why not is better. But practically, given his position and prospects, voting for Noot is a kind of not voting, while endorsing voting-as-such, because you have to.

    ZUGZWANG

  12. Its pretty silly how Hollywood and this movie is portraying McCain as some brave Ed Harris nice guy when they spent months making fun of him for being senile, tempermental and abusive to his wife.
