Scent of Death, Gingrich at California GOP Convention
In America's most populous state, the Republican Party could barely turn out 250 supporters for a banquet as an extremely glum California GOP Convention got underway tonight.
Golden State Republicans have plenty of reason to be despondent. The California Republican Party has been called "woefully weak" and "out of sync with most state voters." Republican legislators are barely hanging on to the one-third hold they still have in Sacramento, and the Democrats used a recent redistricting to make sure that the GOP loses even that. The Democratic leader of the California State Senate predicts the Democrats will take enough seats in this year's election to remove the only tool (a requirement that new taxes be subject to a supermajority vote) that the Republicans have to check left-wing legislation. Demographically the California Republican Party is positioned far from all the growth areas.
These structural defects are clear in the convention at a Hyatt in Burlingame. The population is almost entirely middle-aged and elderly, and there don't even seem to be a large number of youthful interns providing valet services to delegates. (The Ron Paul campaign – which the kids these days really "grok" is barely visible here.)
In interviews, none of these folks – including vendors, county leaders, delegates, would-be proxy delegates, and at least one irate member of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association – expressed optimism about the state party's future. Republican registration is down to 30.4 percent, and in comments earlier tonight, Tom del Beccarro, the new chairman of the state party, was unable to articulate a vision to get that figure up.
Del Beccarro took over the leadership of the California Republicans a little less than a year ago, when the party's abysmal condition had just been starkly demonstrated by 2010 congressional elections that saw the California GOP lose congressional seats in the midst of a nationwide Republican tidal wave powered by the Tea Party. The new chairman is facing a massive challenge in trying to reverse the party's decline.
When asked about that challenge and the likely prospect of an even stronger Democratic stranglehold after November, the chairman replied, "I don't think it's going to be a very good Democratic year. " Del Beccarro said he plans to "make this a statewide election on an idea that will coalesce voters." He cautioned against trying to run more than 170 separate races, and said only a "statewide election on a popular issue" will work.
But despite his emphasis on a "positive vision," Del Beccarro was short on big ideas. His statewide issues boil down to two: a spending cap and an attempt to restrict the power of "special interests" in upcoming ballot initiatives. He proposed getting more Republican voters through standard registration drive tactics and a "candidate toolbox." Asked about Republicans failure to thwart the Democrats when they gamed this year's redistricting, the state GOP chairman accused Democrats of misrepresenting themselves on local panels. Least promisingly of all, he took the Republicans' weakness as a selling point: "The Democrats have the Assembly, the Senate and the governorship," he said. "They can't point any fingers."
This is a common theme at the convention, where attendees lament the power of Democrats but don't seem hopeful about changing. Both tonight's dinner speakers – Rep. Darrell Issa (San Diego) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Bakersfield) – conceded that the Democrats are in full control of California.
"Don't blame us; we're powerless" doesn't seem like a strong campaign theme. Of the presidential candidates, only Newt Gingrich will be putting in an appearance at this weekend's confab. (Former hopefuls Herman Cain and Tim Pawlenty are also lurking somewhere.) It's striking to see such lack of enthusiasm even among the cadre. In the state of Ronald Reagan (whose image is everywhere here), the Republicans are near death.

If they run on 'elect us or you lose the ability to stop tax increases and budget overruns' they will win. The Dems tried to get the 2/3 requirement changed by referendum and were soundly shot down. No one wants them to run away any more with the pocketbook.

I used to have a cat named Oliver. He was delicious.
The article above was unusually snark-lite.
What have you done with the real Tim Cavanaugh?
California ain't dying. Compton is just growing.
I used to fart in a jar. Then I realized I could fart in many jars.
Those who can, do.
Those who can't, spoof.
Quit spoofing me!
It sounds like the CA republican party is ripe for a libertarian takeover.
and not a moment too soon. How often do you see that how CA goes, so goes the country. In CA, people have long since figured out that they can vote themselves other people's money. Once that happens, tough to go back.
a libertarian takeover
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
[wipes eyes]
HOHOHOHOHO!
Sorry.
"the CA republican party is ripe for a libertarian takeover"
I'm currently taking donations for the new (privately funded) libertarian army. Donations of food, drugs, cash, sex and military hardware are all accepted with equanimity.

She's spastic, but cute.
I hope that feeling permeates the entire GOP, and they all have massive, debilitating strokes requiring 24-hour nursing-home care.
But, in order for the above to have full effect, I further hope every for the entire Democrat contingent, beat each other in the heads with hammers until every one of them is in an irreversible coma.
Only then, will we see progress.
BTW, for you fuckers in Homeland Security:
I clearly called for natural causes in the above scenarios, so don't even fucking bother trying to pretend it was a threat of any kind.
*puts Mr. FIFY on a watchlist and submits his name for consideration under the NDAA and possible hitlist for conspiring with his god to assassinate political leaders with natural causes.*
*reads DHS memo, jots down a few lines on letterhead entitled "Executive Order" and signs it*
God may have bolts of lightning, but I got predator drones bitch.
We're all for this.
Why doesn't anyone take libertarians seriously?
Anyone besides DHS, that is.
When did you stop licking public toilet seats? As long as we are asking compound questions, that is.
You answered my rhetorical question.
Touchy, aren't we.
Not a bit. Thanks for caring, though.
Oh, people DO take us seriously, Rhet:

Your mother doesn't count.
You're a fuckhead, Rhet.
I love how the GOP is all "we're not in power, don't blame us". When they pull this shit I like to point to "The Governator" and laugh.
Even when they are in power they're not in power. THAT is how stupid the CA GOP is these days.
The Governator was Republican only by a chance of registration. He never helped one GOP candidate. Never showed up to help one fellow Republican. He might as well have been independent for all the good having an (R) after his name did. The feeling was mutual on the party side as well.
Don't judge the CA GOP on the basis of the Governator. If you recall the party was solidly behind McClintock, it was the celebrity fawning press that campaigned for Ahnold.
Yoo-taw iz betwin cawlarahdo n calephonia.
Even when they are in power they're not in power. THAT is how stupid...
Sounds like Obama's playbook...blame that Republican Congress...that controls the house...for 2 years....so yeah, estoopido
The people of California are so screwed but then again most Californians who vote for "progressives" and/or Democrats deserve it. Libertarians and conservatives are just collateral damage from the stupidity of the voting public at large.
This is true everywhere in a Democracy.
just ask us, and we invented democracy.
Koinon Hellenon, mother-fuckers.

This seems like one of the more obvious 5th Amendment cases. It's a little amazing the government took it this far.
yeah, I mean the guy spent about a year in jail after a grand jury indictment
In order to maximize progress, it is best to keep pressure constantly applied. Sure, you lose a bunch, but the cost is born by tax payers and every once in while the reactionary forces are pushed back. In 20 years, we will have eliminated the 5th Amendment and we can finally live in a modern society.
"...conceded that the Democrats are in full control of California"
Hence the abysmal condition the state is in. Conservatives, business owners, and folks with the means to do so, are leaving the state in droves.
Hence the abysmal condition the state is in.

and yet, nothing changes. It's as though the concept of cause-and-effect does not exist in that state.
This is what happens when constitutional republicanism is subverted by de facto direct democratic mandate. Democracy totally, like, rocks.
Works in Switzerland.
Swiss bankers are leeches upon Europe. It's easy to live well when you have a license to steal from everyone else.
Sounds like a case of penis envy.
Which is why the left will blame libertarians when the state ultimately fails.
If only you guys could have got with the program our perfect society would have been a reality.
Ken Schultz has said a few times that he thinks the issue the California GOP has is aesthetic and I'm inclined to agree to an extent. The national GOP has ran on this whole Red State, God Loving, Bible Thumping, SoCon image and it has destroyed the GOP in my beloved Golden State (and throughout much of the other coastal metro regions across the country).
The GOP here needs to distance itself from the national GOP, but I doubt that would help much. In a way, most of the pressing statewide issues theoretically break in their favor (public sector compensation and pensions, influence of unions, non competitive districts, general antipathy towards broad based tax increases, etc).
But Californians are on a whole unbelievably stupid and don't seem to recognize the chasm of difference between state and federal issues. So they think a vote for Joe Republican for the State Assembly seat in West Los Angeles is the same as voting for Sticky Ricky Cumfarts, and that because Joe Republican has an "R" next to his name, he's going to ban birth control, send TEH GHEYZ, TEH MEKSIKENS, and TEH MOOSLUMZ to death camps, fire all teachers who don't pledge fealty to Jebus, and start a war with Oregon.
I try talking about state specific concerns with my fellow citizens, and even lamenting the notion that the only viable alternative vision of governance in this state is evaporating as a legislative power, and I get greeted with blank stares and horror stories about the cute gay couple in WeHo that just wants to marry and that evil Sticky Ricky Cumfarts wants to deport them to Bahrain.
To put it another way: America, we are your Greece.
That's an insult to Greece.
Yes, but it is not currently possible to insult Greece as much as it deserves. So?
I thought it was more of a tantrum than an insult.
The GOP has positioned itself as Democrat lite in the NE. The result: the GOP is largely uncompetitive there. The GOP in CA has tried to be moderate - witness the Governator who spent most of his term doing whatever his opponents wanted him to do. The CA GOP made the 2010 election all about promoting "moderate" CEO candidates. Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina both lost handily. The result of all this wishy-washy pandering and compromising: the GOP is no longer competitive in CA.
You have it exactly wrong, Sudden. If the GOP is to have any chance against the Democrats, it must draw a firm ideological distinction between itself and the Democrat Party, your socially liberal circle of friends notwithstanding. People don't get excited about voting for squish and anyone interested in voting for handouts won't vote for the lesser handouterers.
You're getting your social and fiscal/economic wires crossed.
No, I'm not. The GOP in CA and nationally has caved to Democrats on everything. It is constantly in retreat or, at best, putting up a weak holding action. If it wants to be politically competitive, the GOP must actively challenge the DP ideologically in order to inspire its natural base. There is no reason to believe that opposing the radical social policies of the DP in CA or anywhere else is a political loser. If social liberalism and fiscal conservatism were an unstoppable political force, than the LP would be kicking political ass.
Yes, the limpness of the GOP is its main problem. That does not make Socon horseshit any more of a sell. It will just make things worse. All the people who believe in that crap vote GOP anyway. If anything, its selling true fiscal conservatism that is the problem. No need to complicate it with social issues. And that LP example is unfair. The LP's problems are legion.
Let me suggest a different perspective. Instead of social liberals demanding, as they have been demanding for 20 years, that social conservatives hold their noses and vote strictly on the basis of fiscal conservatism, how about the social liberals holding their noses and voting strictly on the basis of fiscal conservatism? How about a little political balance?
It might even do the soclibs a favor. Too much change too quickly freaks people out. It might serve soclibs well in the long run to let society simmer a little in the social changes which have already been made before demanding a bunch of new changes.
In any case, CA is facing fiscal oblivion as is the country as a whole. If the economic problems are not dealt with, most people will revert back to hardcore traditional values and all the soclib changes that have been made will be rolled back.
how about the social liberals holding their noses and voting strictly on the basis of fiscal conservatism?
We already did that. Conservative-Libertarian fusionism was the default in the old times. You guys fucked it up. We know you won't deliver on fiscal conservatism with few exceptions, so why should we even compromise?
Exactly, the socons had their damn chances from most of 1980 onward and they ballooned the budget. They didn't even get their social agenda accomplished. Now they want us to support Santorum? Ain't gonna happen.
The point I was making isn't that the CAGOP needs to moderate its stance, and certainly not on economic/fiscal issues. If anything, the GOP stance on certain fiscal issues is a winner (public employee pensions for one). My larger point was that it doesn't matter if Carly and Meg were the second coming of Boxer and Feinstein, voters in CA see the "R" next to the name and automatically vote against because the associate "R" with southern Evangelicals, anti-gays, and racists. I'm not saying that they're right to do so, but they do. The only way the CAGOP could hope to change that is to essentially break free of that stigma by getting out in front of the Dems on a big social issue. That said, I doubt even that strategy would work, because they would ultimately lose as many (if not more) voters in red portions of the state than they would gain in blue portions.
voters ... associate "R" with southern Evangelicals, anti-gays, and racists
If that is the case, then the problem is a faulty public image created by Democrats which must be challenged, not accepted and apologized for.
The only way the CAGOP could hope to change that is to essentially break free of that stigma by getting out in front of the Dems on a big social issue.
Out Democrat the Democrats on a big social issue - gotcha. That would demoralize the Republican base and alienate any voter who didn't buy into the "big social issue" as defined by the Democrats since they would have no one expressing their viewpoint, at least not in CA.
I doubt even that strategy would work, because ...
Which was part of my point. Embracing soclib policies won't get the GOP anything, but it will demoralize its base.
"If that is the case, then the problem is a faulty public image created by Democrats which must be challenged, not accepted and apologized for."
-No, the GOP created-or at least vindicated it. The solution is to put social conservatives in their place ie The Bottom
The other part of the solution is to embrace 'social libertarianism' as a marketing ploy. Give the SoCon idiots some read meat, like school choice, and (more) freedom for everybody else.
No, the GOP created-or at least vindicated it
The GOP has never done anything to justify being viewed as racist or to be viewed as being controlled by Evangelicals and opposing the political aggression of gays is not "anti-gay". Those are just Democrat Party talking points.
The solution is to put social conservatives in their place ie The Bottom
That is where the RP establishment has put socon for 20 years. Do you really think that shitting all over socons is likely to get socon votes? Do you really think the GOP can win much of anything by appealing exclusively to the DP voter base + gays and crapping on the large number of people who are socon? I say 'large' in the sense that those who don't want gayness treated the same way politically as race vastly outnumber gays.
That is where the RP establishment has put socon for 20 years.
BULL. SHIT. You had the president talking about constitutionally banning gay marriage. You people are perma-victims every bit as much as the left, always woe-begotten.
You had the president talking about constitutionally banning gay marriage.
Talk means nothing. Did gay marriage get constitutionally banned? No. Like most of what Bush said, it didn't happen.
The RP establishment didn't actively push for a redefinition of marriage against the will of the people and in the face of a national law, passed under Clinton, which maintained the current definition and in your book that means that socons were running the show? You are confused. The RP establishment has pushing the message that the most important thing is to beat Democrats and so the socons should unite behind the establishment's chosen candidates without making any noise about social issues and they have been doing so for years. Some socons still get uppity and open their mouths, but they definitively don't control the party or its agenda.
You people
Who is "you people"? Have I identified myself as a social conservative?
are perma-victims every bit as much as the left, always woe-begotten.
The difference is that the bitching on the left is from fringe groups throwing tantrums because radical changes are not made on their behalf while social conservatives watch as their concerns, even if they represent the majority view, are overridden in order to placate a tiny sliver of the population. Tyranny is bad and tyranny of the minority is worse than tyranny of the majority.
Good ahead, Cyto, hold your breath because you aren't getting your way.
You're rhetoric outed you as a SoCon a while back. Only a SoCon can try to sound so tough while being so whiny.
"The Left" as we are fighting isn't fringe at all. SS, Medicare, Medicaid, all those entitlements are mainstream as hell. Even most TPers want 'em. Hell they are more mainstream than most SoCon issues.
I think you've got this idea that I or anybody else here should care about the Majority View. Most here hate the Majority and want it to go fuck itself. In any event, SoCons aren't really a majority and will be politically irrelevant in not too long as they literally join the fossil bed. Goodbye.
The other part of the solution is to embrace 'social libertarianism' as a marketing ploy.
Yeah, that's worked out real well so far. Socons are just too stupid to recognize when they are being played. Treating the tens of millions of American voters who count themselves as social conservatives with contempt is a sure path to political victory.
I'll repeat myself: if the fiscal problems are not solved, social liberals, particularly gays, are going to be shoved right back into the closet and no amount of whining about 'fairness' and 'rights' will change that. It is social liberals who have the most to lose if the current crisis is not fixed.
I wonder if this can provide an opportunity for the CA LP to get some traction then... maybe not
I would hope, but I know better. Voters as a whole will always consider a vote for a third party to be a throw away. And were a third party to emerge in CA, it would almost certainly be the greens running as the Dems without the corruption (until they were to actually gain legislative power).
Maybe the California GOP could combat that by pointing to its long history of denouncing the national party and its socon ways.
Wait, whut?
But Americans are on a whole unbelievably stupid and don't seem to recognize the chasm of difference between state and federal issues.
There fixed it for ya.
The national GOP has ran on this whole Red State, God Loving, Bible Thumping, SoCon image and it has destroyed the GOP in my beloved Golden State
Sorry, but that's crap. There are plenty of non-irrelevant state GOPs in deep blue states. Look at IL and NY for God's sake.
Sudden is indeed full of crap. Detente was a strategy cooked up by the Soviet Union and promoted within the US as the best way for the US to deal with the USSR. Only by dumping detente could the US apply the pressure that lead to the demise of the evil empire.
Similarly, the Democrats have devised the strategy that the Republicans should follow and have promoted it as the best way for the RP to combat the DP - the RP should moderate its tone, adopt the premises of the DP on important issues and not fight back, especially on social issues. The RP should quit letting the DP define the agenda and quit trying to be the "me too" party. Do most CAians really want public school children taught "gay history" and "gender diversity"? Do most CAians really want the economic future of CA sacrificed to save sandflies? Are the concerns of enviro extremists really so important to CA voters?
All that may be true but the majority in this country want to hear about fixing the national debt, and fixingthis economy. They roll their eyes at the social issues as nothing more than pandering which it is. The SoCons are probably going to end up costing us all four more years of union plunder and socialism.
They roll their eyes at the social issues as nothing more than pandering
Socon are, by definition truly concerned about social issues. Talking about those issues is not just pandering unless the politicians doing the "pandering" are insincere. Sincerity is one of the great concerns of voters of all ideologies - just look at how disappointed committed liberals are with BHO and how disappointed committed conservatives were with GWB and are with the RP establishment.
One of the problems for the GOP is that it has been telling socons to shut their traps about social issues and to back the GOP in promoting fiscal conservatism since the GHWB admin. From the socon perspective, they have gotten neither fiscal nor social conservatism in exchange for their party loyalty. There is a real danger for the GOP that the socons will either not vote or will break off into another party.
the majority in this country ... roll their eyes at the social issues
I'm not sure that most voters are really upset if socon values and concerns are mentioned or even highlighted. Americans identify themselves 2-to-1 as conservative over liberal and I think that self-identification is mostly based on social views. Certainly, social liberalism is not a slam-dunk political win. Talking about social issues makes the political class uncomfortable, but that discomfort doesn't necessarily transfer to voters.
One of the problems for the GOP is that it has been telling socons to shut their traps about social issues
What world do you live in? The GOP has indulged these assholes at every turn.
I'm not sure that most voters are really upset if socon values and concerns are mentioned or even highlighted.
The fact is, voters especially young ones, are becoming more socially enlightened which leaves SoCons firmly in the fossil bed, where they belong. One of the few things going right in the world today.
And Ryan Braun and Jeremy Lin.
The GOP has indulged these assholes at every turn.
Really? And just what form has that indulgence taken? I think you are equating the GOP's not enthusiastically championing the political agenda of gays with 'indulging socons'. Even the DP tip toes about gay issues because it knows that to openly promote the gay agenda is politically deadly. Remember, even BHO won't say that he supports gay marriage. For political reasons, he has to lie about his support.
voters especially young ones, are becoming more socially enlightened which leaves SoCons firmly in the fossil bed, where they belong
You are such a hater. Funny how progressives always claim that their desires are inevitable and that their opponents are unenlightened. There is nothing enlightened about being a libertine.
back the GOP in promoting fiscal conservatism
You mean give it a little lip service while actually doing the exact opposite, maybe.
When has the GOP pushed SoCon issues then passed bills that do exactly the opposite? SoCon issues sometimes get mere lip service too, but they typically don't actively work against those issues.
give it a little lip service while actually doing the exact opposite
As I said, the GOP doesn't deliver on fiscal conservatism.
When has the GOP pushed SoCon issues then passed bills that do exactly the opposite?
No Child Left Behind is one example. Dramatically increasing funding for the Department of Education and for Planned Parenthood are two more examples. The RP establishment generally doesn't champion constitutionalism except tactically and rarely has the guts to push back against identity politics. CPB still gets its handouts. A host of programs defined by liberals such as Headstart and Americorp get their funding renewed and increased every year. Many of those liberal programs are largely conduits for funneling tax dollars to left-wing political activity.
There is nothing enlightened about being a libertine.
You're an imbecile we get it already.
You're an imbecile we get it already.
And you are a child, or at least childish. Grow up. You can't always get what you want. Other people get a say too.
Love that. "You can't have freedom because OTHER PEOPLE".
The Republicans are relevant in New York?
Well, only because they were able to gerrymander the State Senate for 40 years. If they lose the majority this election, that may well go out the window too.
For some values of "relevant". They'll still have patronage, albeit a much reduced share of it. They'll also still be competitive in the county gov'ts of Nassau, Suffolk, and several others.
Outside of Buffalo and Albany, the GOP is fairly dominant upstate. Of course the population ratios are such that the state is going to be run from NYC regardless, but at least the GOP has some pull. Allowing the other party to have 2/3 majorities in both legislatures is feebleness beyond belief.
My theory is that a good majority of thosw who vote for Team BLUE do so not because they're in support of the Leviathan, but because the Bible State vision of Team RED is genuinely something to fear. There is a reason that many people say "at this point, the only thing worse than a second Obama term would be a Santorum term", and it isn't because Obama is known for good policy.
There is a reason that many people say "at this point, the only thing worse than a second Obama term would be a Santorum term"
There is no accounting for irrational fear. Just what is Sticky Ricky likely to do that is worse than what Obama is doing?
P.S. I want my turkey sandwich back. My mommy makes a great turkey sandwich. Those government men are poopy pants.
Stick around Tim, the RLC is having a Ron Paul Rally at 12:00 (same time Nukular Titties is having his speech), and a Rally for Liberty at 2:00.
A friend was telling me about a RP meet up tomorrow in SoCal at noon, presumably scheduled to coincide with this event.
I was thinking about going, but the RP sect in Cali seems to think that if we end all the wars and eliminate the department of defense, we'll be so flush with cash we'll be shitting million dollar bills and giving every old person a pony. I figured I'd altogether avoid it.
I speak of entitlements, and eyes glaze over. It's hilarious how everyone has become an expert on a dry and complication topic such as the Fed, but the basic arithmetic of entitlements seems to be greeted with a pitiful lack of enthusiasm.
Needs more Sticky Ricky Cumfarts.
Nobody seems to give a shit about entitlements, except to preserve and/or expand them. They won't become a majority concern until people start experiencing the crushing effects of taxation that will be needed to pay for them. But by then it will be too late.
The Democratic leader of the California State Senate predicts the Democrats will take enough seats in this year's election to remove the only tool (a requirement that new taxes be subject to a supermajority vote) that the Republicans have to check left-wing legislation.
If so, by 2015 they'll be praying for the big earthquake.
"Don't blame us; we're powerless" doesn't seem like a strong campaign theme.
It seems to have worked before. All they have to do is find some stupid legislature that they all voted against and tell voters how much better everything would be if they had the power to stop it.
They don't actually have to stop it, of course.
Pretty sure the Dems did this in '06.
The problem with California is Californians. I lived there as a child and the average Californian thinks they are much more enlightened, sensitive and smarter than the rest of the country...not unlike the way the average American thinks they are in relation to the rest of the world. You can't fix that kind of arrogant stupid; it'll have to blow up in their faces before Californians get a clue.
They seem to provide a handy scapegoat for frustrated libertarians. That's something.
Well, the evidence suggests Californians are, on the whole, indeed stupid.
And yet they have what--the world's ninth largest economy? That a whole lot of selling by stupid people.
Selling things does not necessarily require brains, nor does being wealthy correlate with intelligence. Compare Einstein with Warren Buffet (such a disappointment compared to his father)
You can't fix that kind of arrogant stupid; it'll have to blow up in their faces before Californians get a clue.
Wrong. It's blowing up in our faces right now. Effect: business as usual, and worse.
One possible bright light: http://blogs.sacbee.com/capito.....atter.html
A referendum will be on the November ballot to overturn the Democrat mob gerrymandering.
Oops, likes like that bright light is an oncoming train: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/02/.....nsion.html
CA state democrats are pushing for guaranteed pensions for non-government workers. Any employer who has 5 or more employees would be affected.
I've lived in CA my entire life. The arrogance, stupidity and extremism of the Left here pushes the Republicans to go full reactionary. There's very little middle ground.
Ca is the epicenter of stupidity in the universe.
"We brought you the state budget, the DMV and the LAPD. Just wait until you see what Government can do for your retirement."
::pounds head against desk::
Will they still vote Democrat once the money is either A, embezelled by some cronies at CalPERS or B, completely devalued by inflation?
Yes.
Source:
Lived in California
Also, since California can't print it's own money, it can't devalue its way out of a debt crisis. So they'd have to file bankruptcy. Yet even with the current fiscal problems, voters voted for the dumbest shit imaginable: high speed rail through the Central Valley.
They would absolutely find some way to blame the other team.
Isn't the HSR mostly federal funded?
Only kind of, in that a slightly majority of the amount contributed thus far has come from the feds. The vast majority of the budget has no long-term funding source, though.
And even once built, operating costs would definitely be substantial.
Nope. Less than half, IIRC. The federal money has benchmarks with deadlines attached to it. That's why there's so much tak about getting started right away.
And for added lulz, if any of you have a chance, drive through the proposed route or anywhere up the 99 in the central valley. Farm after farm with "Stop HSR" banners on it. But unfortunately, the central valley doesn't have the stroke in Suckramento to stop it.
Why do they care about HSR in those farms though?
Because their land will be cut up for the rail beds, their irrigation canals interrupted, they will not be compensated anywhere near where the production value of the land is over any sort of long-term, they will see no net gain from the project and their taxes will increase to fund it.
That's for starters anyway.
Social security?
Sounds like a temporary backdoor bailout of the public pension system. The crisis will of course rebound ten times larger but these douchebags will be safely out of office by then.
Just from my impression, I do see some resistance to CA Democratic stupidity even among many left-leaning people in the IT industry .. but there's not enough folks sharing our sentiment and most of my colleagues are still relatively apolitical and so am I, in terms of campaigning and trying to convince other people
Go to it, man. Change hearts one mind at a time. The apolitical are like fresh fruit waiting to be carved into sweet-potatoe pie.
I'm a student at UC Irvine, and if there was ever a time for the California GOP to realign itself it would be now that Ron Paul has resurrected conservative/libertarianism among young people. If they just adopted his policy on drugs and war they would have an entire generation of young people willing to support them.
But since this state is going down the shitter anyway I say it's best that Democrats be unambiguously at the wheel during the destruction.
After you graduate, get out of Cali before it goes over the cliff. Come to Texas - bring your money and your guns.
Pity we can't sell it back to Mexico. It would be a win-win for most of us 😛
Is Texas still really hot and dry when it isn't hot and humid and full of funny-speaking Christians?
you talkin' about the Catholic illegals?
HaHAhaHaha! Too funny! How do you do it? Keep that coming, you're on a roll, funny guy!
...they tell me to fart in jars.
New Yawk-style pinko trollfag is retarded.
If they just adopted his policy on drugs and war they would have an entire generation of young people willing to support them.
I'm old enough to have heard that song for the past 40 years. It has never been proven true.
But it's never been proven false either, because Team Red has never tried it.
The only parts of CA that can be salvaged are the central valley and San Diego (and they're a stretch). The central valley needs a really good movement to secede from the state and form their own. That state would be wildly profitable, much more libertarian and they could give those dipshits on the coast the middle finger when they beg for water to protect their poor delta smelt.
Oh, and there are more guns, not counting the gangbangers in LA and Oakland, in the valley than the rest of the state, so those progressive pussies couldn't do shit about it.
dammit sloop, are you going to abandon Orange Cnty?
those Pro-Aggressive pussies are now armed with SWAT tanks and militarized jack-boot Cop Forces. Be careful....
Those unionized pussy cops in the LAPD use their tools against a pliant populus. If they dared cross the grapevine with their tanks, they'd meet a much hardier opposition in the farmers and oilmen of Kern County.
And I should have counted the OC on my list. My mistake there.
Why do you dismiss Ventura County? It's quite nice compared to that giant cesspool called Los Angeles and the ratio of idiot voters is on par with SD and OC.
Amen, fellow VC resident here.
OK! OK! You guys are invited, too.
Although Sudden did refer to himself as an Angeleno yesterday. Why the fuck would someone from Ventura want to be stigmatized with that label?*
*FWIW, you missed a hell of a fun night last night dude. Protip: give up red meat for Lent instead of booze. It's worked for me for many years.
Hell, that was easy. Too easy. What's the catch? Don't say "strawberries", cause that won't fly.
I'm in Thousand Oaks now, but was in Studio City before that and my office is downtown (although I regularly work from home). So, although I'm not technically L.A. county resident anymore, I spend enough time in L.A. where I still consider myself an Angeleno for all practical intents and purposes.
*FWIW, you missed a hell of a fun night last night dude. Protip: give up red meat for Lent instead of booze. It's worked for me for many years.
Yeah, but I try to give up the booze every year because it helps me justify drinking every other night during the year (even if my drinking habits are pretty moderate, 1-2 beers/night).
Also, Long Beach is a pretty shitty commute for someone up here in T.O., and on top of that, my public school teacher wife would be mightily scared by the reason meetup lol.
But it's never been proven false either, because Team Red has never tried it.
The problem is that the generation of young people grow up to be a generation of middle years people. Once the youngins get out of college, most stop using drugs and they begin to see that the world is not as described by their America-hating professors. I know it's not original to say, but people get more conservative as they get older. Political parties can't win just by catering to pot smoking college peaceniks.
And yet those same middle aged people generally don't want their children (and as a society we have defined childhood all the way up to mid 20's) thrown in a rape cage because they wanted to smoke a bowl.
Marijuana legalization is a winning issue. Is it enough of a winning issue for the GOP to gain traction in CA while the Dems rant about how they want to starve hardworking immigrants, old people, and teachers? Probably not, but it's enough of a start.
The one thing Ron Paul's candidacy seems to indicate to me is that if you find an issue that some voters otherwise not prone to your views find important, they might actually begin to actually listen to and even start to find areas of agreement on issues they previously felt were settled in their minds. Ron Paul didn't become a celebrity for running against the Fed, he became a celebrity for running against the war. But as people who were anti-war started listening to him talk, they learned of his Fed stance and took it as their own cause.
those same middle aged people generally don't want their children ... thrown in a rape cage
But parents know that their little snowflakes would never get in trouble with the law.
Marijuana legalization is a winning issue.
That may be true, particularly in CA, but advocates will always face the slippery slope argument and need an effective response. Talking about body sovereignty is ideologically pure, but not effective politically. Legalizing MJ is one thing. Legalizing all drugs is another.
On the basis of the rape cage, legaliz'n isn't a winning issue, but decriminaliz'n of possession is, and it's what a lot of states did decades ago.
Would decrim get voters to the polls? Will decrim matter at all if fiscal sanity is not restored?
Northern Cal is not San Francisco. Nor Cal farmers are mad as hell and they aint gonna take it no more.
Man that conference table setup with TV screens is fucking eerily similar to a frickin self-congratulatory banquet conference thing I was just at. God damn I can't stand these things.
Even if the entire GOP was run out of the state, whenever they go belly up, they'll just blame the national GOP somehow. And if that party disintegrates, they'll blame their failure on the continued existence of any conservative, anywhere, on the earth.
And they'll be bailed out by their Lefty brethren in Washington - and quite likely by many of their opponents there as well.
Stop whining....this is the fate of all Democracies, that everyone is so enamored with.
They didn't bail us out!! Whaaaa!!!
I've thought for a while that for the CAGOP to even have a chance it'll have to ditch the name. "California Conservative Party" or something.
I lived in S. California for 9 years. The annual Orange County Log Cabin Republican dinner drew more people than this statewide GOP confab. This suggests to me that the party needs to shed the anti-gay and anti-immigrant shtick if it wishes to prosper.
Can a leopard shed its spots?
Can CA shed Orange County?
No to both.
What do I win?
Your prize is.....wait for it.....farting in jars! With me Rectal!
Holla at a playa
The annual Orange County Log Cabin Republican dinner drew more people than this statewide GOP confab. This suggests to me that the party needs to shed the anti-gay and anti-immigrant shtick if it wishes to prosper.
Your logic is flawed. The problem is the lack of people attending the GOP confab, not the number of people going to the Log Cabin. The GOP needs to actually back up its rhetoric by providing a real alternative to the Democrat Party. Even in CA, the DP is wildly to the left of voters. Opposing illegal immigration and opposing the attempt to use the government to promote homosexuality are political winners, even in CA. Try to think outside of your metrosexual world.
You're nuts, Bailey Hoo. The vast majority of Californians are pro-immigrant regardless of party or location. And most are ambivalent when it comes to gay rights. If Prop 8 came up again this year, no way it passes. It's not "promoting homosexuality," as you put it either.
You sure sound like a bigot, but I can't tell if you're getting ready to go all messikan-hater or homo-hater on us.
The vast majority of Californians are pro-immigrant
illegal vs. legal, but whatever
If Prop 8 came up again this year, no way it passes.
Sure, if you say so. No doubt voters didn't really mean it last time.
It's not "promoting homosexuality," as you put it either.
Redefining marriage, especially against the wishes of voters, most certainly is using government to promote homosexuality and is part of a broad-based campaign to normalize alternative sexual lifestyles. I realize that libertarians believe that winning by any means necessary is moral as long as it is their desires that prevail so I'm sure you will babble about non-existent rights and oppression. Blah, blah, blah.
You sure sound like a bigot
I disagree with you, therefore I am a hater and a bigot. The usual name calling argument - very persuasive.
illegal vs. legal, but whatever
I actually find it interesting that many bourgeois "progressives" are generally lax on their immigration views and believe in handouts and creating a permanent underclass while simultaneously despising in private the sprawling latino areas around them. They would never dream of opposing anything that benefits brown for fear of being considered TEH RACIST!!1!1!!, but they secretly harbor a far more racist view of brown culture than many of the more nativist ranks of the GOP. The cognitive dissonance is thick in Cali.
they secretly harbor a far more racist view of brown culture than many of the more nativist ranks of the GOP
Nativism is non-partisan. For obvious reasons (Racists!), the DP accuses the GOP and GOP voters of being nativist, but there does seem to be a fair number of loyal Democrat voters who are fervently nativist.
I'm not a bigot, but it's obvious to me that the "marriage equality" movement is mostly a function of agitprop to boost the esteem of homosexuality. It has substantive effects that I find mostly anti-liberty, but largely it's a way of saying both that this is a pressure group that has clout and that they should have more prominence or at least respect. It's like the street signs in Manhattan that spell out "SCHOOL FOR DEAF" in sign language.
The "marriage equality' movement is about gay couples being able to marry under what the state defines as marriage. It grants them the same rights as heterosexual couples when it comes to survivorship, adoption, custody, etc. That's what it's about.* And the gays who are clamoring for it but are against recognizing polygamous marriage or marriage of cousins are bigots as well.
*Disclaimer: I oppose all forms of state-sanctioned marriage.
Bailey Hoo and Rober: you are a large part of the reason for the failure of the CAGOP and more broadly the GOP nominee process. We aren't buying your bigotry 'homosexual agenda' nonsense today, tomorrow, or ever.
This^! Which is why this libertarian finds it so strange that so many other libertarians see a home with the GOP.
Ok, Cyto, we get it. You're a homo who votes exclusively on the basis of homoness, all other considerations and all other people and their considerations be damned. Have fun in your little world of hatred and bitterness. Yes, homos and their worries are the reason that the CAGOP and the GOP nominee process have failed (has the nominee process failed? That's news to me!).
And I guess you've figured out that the 'homosexual agenda' is a conspiracy invented by social conservatives just to persecute gays. Social conservatives aren't really people they should be rounded up and put in concentration camps.
I'll have to do this in parts because of the character limit, but let's examine whether or not a 'gay agenda' that is being pushed with government institutions really exists, shall we? Some links are from the UK and Canada, others from the US. The observant reader will notice that punishment and humiliation of dissenters is very much part of the effort.
A gay magazine editor brags about teaching to love the ghey in Vancouver schools
A 14 year old in Fort Worth is punished
3 year olds are labelled homophobic by the government of Britain
Oops. Looks like I can't have more than two links in a post so I guess I'll cut my posts short. It's a little tiresome to have to point out the obvious anyway to someone who will never acknowledge reality
One last one.
LA schools require the promotion of gays to young schoolchildren, political reeducation (sensitivity training) for educators, students and parents
Elmhurst College is using sexual orientation as an admissions criterium.
Okay, okay, I'm not done yet.
A writer at a Gay site admits the obvious
Okay, I'm not done yet.
Unfortunately, the squirrels told me I was a spambot when I tried to post some quotes of a writer at a gay site who freely admits that gays use the school system to recruit and indoctrinate kids into the gay lifestyle.
Let's see if I can slip at least some of his most inflammatory words in
Okay, I'm not done yet.

Unfortunately, the squirrels told me I was a spambot when I tried to post some quotes of a writer at a gay site who freely admits that gays use the school system to recruit and indoctrinate kids into the gay lifestyle. You'll have to go to the site and read for yourself.
I have a bunch more links, but you get the point - schools, the military, government agencies and the entertainment industry are all being used to promote alternative sexual lifestyles.
Damn, the anti-spam squirrels. Read this link and learn.
Schools from grade school through universities, the military, government agencies and the entertainment industry are all promoting the ghey. No true libertarian could possibly countenance the use of the government to push particular lifestyles.
I generally share your sentiment. As much as I am in favor of permitted gay marriage (based on a reading of Lochner that grants freedom of contract), I do recognize that there seems to be a more broad concerted effort to get people to accept teh ghey as ok. I personally think it is, but at the same time, if you wanna think its sinful, stupid, or anti-evolutionary, go for it.
All societies change. Those that don't eventually die off. I don't see the natural evolution of society to accept alternative lifestyles as a bad thing per se, but trying to force or manipulate the society into accepting a change it doesn't want doesn't seem wise to me. Who is the all-knowing sage who judges whether a particular change is a good thing? I don't see the activity of gay activists as being anything other than bullying by a narrow political interest. And when the government is used ... well, that type of thing tends to go very wrong very quickly.
Even the most pro-gay posters on this site should be repelled by what the social radicals will be promoting next
on Torchwood
and by academics
To all you social liberals I ask the questions, "where do you draw line? How do you stop the drive to accept all things sexual once you get the particulars that you want? Do you really want to mainstream child molestation?"
To all you social liberals I ask the questions, "where do you draw line? How do you stop the drive to accept all things sexual once you get the particulars that you want? Do you really want to mainstream child molestation?"
I draw the line at the edge of people's property. And what they want to do there is their own fucking business until it directly impacts my ability to do same. As far as the "child molestation" strawman you erected, that's not consensual, so it's an infringement on their liberty, which is wrong.
This goes for gay marria
This goes for gay marriage, polygamy, polyandry, marriage of relatives, drug use, use of private property, etc, etc.
Your problem is that you hate liberty unless it's liberty to do what you think others should do. I hope you don't have any children.
the only "line" social liberals see is the one that allows them to marginalize political opponents. They will pretend the conference you link to is just an academic exercise "to foster better understanding of how different populations live in a patriarchal world" or some such bullshit. They are the same folks who have pretend for years that NAMBLA does not exist.
Those people aren't social liberals in my opinion. They want to control what kids are taught and what people must accept. Social liberals (I guess I'm going all true Scotsman here) don't care what people do until it infringes on someone else's liberty. Those asshats are social engineers. Same as the idiots in Texas who compelled people to teach creationism aside evolution.
And while I agree it's wrong to teach those things in public school, it's for a different reason. I don't think public schools should exist as all they are are indoctrination centers for whoever controls the state school board. "Citizenship" should not be taught by an agent of the state. And morals should not be either.
Ok, Cyto, we get it. You're a homo who votes exclusively on the basis of homoness, all other considerations and all other people and their considerations be damned. Have fun in your little world of hatred and bitterness.
I love being accused of 'hate and bitterness' by someone who goes on to try and prove there is a 'gay agenda'. Like I said above, you SoCon types are permanently aggrieved much like the left and to a lesser exten noninterventionists.
someone who goes on to try and prove there is a 'gay agenda'
Still trying to claim there is no gay agenda? Don't confuse my pushing back against your demands with hatred and bitterness. My only concern is that political freaks not rule the country according to their narrow whims. Most of the problems in CA have been caused by political freaks wielding wildly disproportionate power.
Still trying to claim there is no gay agenda?
Yes, I also claim there is no ToothFairy.
CA's problems are caused by The People voting for idiots. They have idiotic demands and they get met.
I exist!
The homophobic, warmongering O-bomb-ster and his mixed immigration message fits right in a the ReThug convention, only standing out by his big ears and con-man's grin.
Let's try an anti-war, non-interventionist, get-BIG-GOVT-off our backs approach. RONPAUL2012.
U a funny doggy!
Sadly, the conservatives of this state appear to be completely ignorant of all the things California is doing that makes every other state look like hicks.
It's called PROGRESSIVE for a reason and what they don't seem to get most is that whining about getting left behind doesn't make sense to anyone, especially voters. Most of the people leaving the state are not making it worse here. I encourage all of the conservatives who are unhappy to do the same. Go find a state that welcomes your attitude. After living among them for only a year, I'd bet you'll understand why so many people prefer to stay in California.
HI SPEED RAILZZ.
Bitchez love hi speed railz.
Nick the Pro-Aggressive loves aggression applied in a "Pro-Govt" direction.
California Pro-Aggressives overwhelmingly support the $oros-Obama-Clinton War Machine.
.....while condemning the Bushies for doing the exact same. Only difference, Bushies had a different set of "insiders".
Cali Pro-Aggressive Dems feel comfortable in knowing they have one of their "own" that's doing all the warmongering now
Seriously. Once they saw how people out in the pleeblands can own a pet goldfish or throw a football without a government permit, they'd run screaming back to the progressive hugbox that is California.
You can't believe what it's like out here in flyover country without a Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation to protect us from the howling barbarians. The living envy the dead.
How do you survive?
Canned goods, fusty shotgun shells and cannibalism.
Preach it brother! Say it again and again as loud as you can! Shout it from the rooftops! Testify!
TX welcomes your foolishness. TX may not have CA's natural resources or proximity to the far east, but TX still has way more freedom than CA and people love freedom.
Enjoy your PROGRESSIVENESS. I'm sure living in unemployed poverty in a violent neighborhood of social decay will be more than compensated for by the gay marriage, suffocating taxes and satisfaction that not only can you not legally smoke in your own home, but that you have helped save the planet somehow from the depredations of capitalism.
Unless you're gay. That doesn't go over so well in TX.
Or black. Still kind of tough to be black in TX.
Or Mexican. Lots o' Mejicanos in TX but whitey don't like 'em; unless they're cooking or working real cheap.
Or atheists.
Wow. Wow. Fucktards Incorporated is THAT way. *Points to Sacramento.*
You obviously live on stereotypes. The Human Rights Campaign says that it gets more money from the Dallas metroplex than from anywhere else. Well, at least that's what the HRC says at its Dallas fundraisers. Dallas even has a lesbian sheriff if you keep track of that sorta thing.
Lots of blacks and Latinos in TX. Most people get along just fine.
Atheists aren't being rounded up and shot. Don't know of any plans to do so.
My wife has family in Texas. I've spent time there. I also know a lesbian who moved from TX out here to CA specifically to avoid the harassment she was getting in TX. Yes, any major city is going to have its version of a lavender district. That does not mean gays are not harassed.
"Atheists aren't being rounded up and shot". Yeah, that's the only way to fuck with someone. Anything short of the "Final Solution" is ok.
BTW, it was the Texas Board of Education that decided to remove the work of Thomas Jefferson from the curriculum and replace it with material that was more favorable to muddling religion with politics: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/03.....-standard/
Go away. Fucktard Inc over there (points to Sac).
Since 1976, the state of TX has executed about 4 times as many people as any other state. http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.or.....cuted-1976
The number of blacks on death row far exceeds that of whites, or latinos, even though blacks comprise less than 12% of the population:
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/48000.html
TX has executed about 4 times as many people as any other state.
So what. TX is more populace than most states and executions don't indicate a lack of freedom.
blacks on death row far exceeds that of whites, or latinos, even though blacks comprise less than 12% of the population
So what. Blacks commit far more violent crime than non-blacks. Once again, not an indication of a lack of freedom, just a lack of death row affirmative action.
That's complete bullshit. Thanks for proving you're a bigot. I'll end the discussion now. It's a waste of time.
What's complete bullshit, toy man? That blacks commit waaaaaaay more violent crime than non-blacks? How is my mentioning that fact proof that I am a bigot?
That blacks commit are convicted for waaaaaaay more violent crime than non-blacks?
FIFY! Our legal system unjustly targets blacks. Texas more so than many other places.
Our legal system unjustly targets blacks
And you "know" this because the racial quotas in the justice system aren't satisfied. Maybe blacks really do commit more crime and maybe blacks really are worse at evading arrest and conviction. No, of course, all disparities are due to RACISM!!!!!

I could go on and on. As bad as CA is, please don't try to paint Texas as a bastion of civil liberty. It isn't. It is almost as bad as CA, just in different ways.
It is almost as bad as CA, just in different ways.
Not even close. I've lived in CA and in TX. CA is way more f'ed up than TX, you know TX, that state without an income tax? Much easier to start a business in TX. Much easier to build. Much lower tax burden. Not as many nannies trying to control what people eat. Enviro extremists don't obstruct every effort at development and don't drive up the cost of everything. Way, way more lawyers in CA than in any other state.
but if TX is "almost as bad as CA", that still means TX is better, right?
The state income tax in CA, like all income taxes, does allow the state to ceaselessly meddle in people's lives, so that alone puts CA way below TX.
I'll leave this one for you to google. Just enter the words "Cameron Todd Willingham" and "Governor Perry" and see what you find.
remove the work of Thomas Jefferson from the curriculum and replace it with material that was more favorable to muddling religion with politics
You are mischaracterizing the actions of the TBE. It was ridiculous to include Jefferson amongst writers such as Locke, Hobbes, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Aquinas, Calvin and Blackstone anyway. Jefferson was included originally for no other reason than to include his quote about separation of church and state. Jefferson didn't coin the idea and plucking the quote out of the full context of America's founding is a profound distortion of history. The radical left has been screwing with gov't school curricula for years in order to teach school children a warped view of American history. In TX, normal people have engaged the left in the battle over textbooks. Naturally, the left is upset by this.
I also know a lesbian who moved from TX out here to CA
And I know many gays and lesbians who live in TX without a problem and haven't moved out. What's your point?
Atheists, those poor, poor atheists. They suffer so much in TX. How exactly?
A few years back, a friend of mine was accused of a crime. I testified in her defense. I was wondering how to handle the oath. Since I'm an atheist, here in Texas, I was wondering if I should ask the judge if I could take a version without any god references. The problem was, if the jury was present that could prejudice them against me.
Anyway, when it came time to take the oath, it turned out there weren't any god references to worry about.
While I don't think that this state is perfect wrt separation of church and state, implying that we are anywhere near the final solution is ridiculous.
Reading comments from the Incans here, it seems like Cali under Dem rule has to hit even rocker bottom for a regime change to be considered.
Former Cali resident myself. California is going broke, period. There is nothing that can stop the juggernaut of public unions there.
The state needs structural reform of the government. A parliamentary type system would be best, barring that we need a unicameral legislature and a unitary executive branch.
CA will soon get violent civil unrest. That should provide the pretext needed for structural reform.
You obviously haven't gotten the gist of the Paul Krugman School of Public Policy: The problem is always that you didn't spend enough, plunder sufficiently from the electorate or heap enough regulation on anything that dare move without government permission and/or direction.
Krugmanism. It's a means to an end. That end is communism.
Could it be that a good chunk of the voters who might otherwise be inclined to consider the Republicans as an alternative have instead come to the conclusion that the party is filled with gamers, liars, power-worshiping Hugh Hewitt type whiners and fast talking con artists. A bunch of wannabe suck-ups who talk about limited government but deliver nothing but the same old bs and make excuses for their leech-like existence. When one cannot distinguish between one bloodsucker and the next in office, don't be surprised if the voters make choices based on such trivialities as avoiding the biggest whiners. And whining has become an obvious repube characteristic when judging politicians on what they do, not what they say.
The republican party must be destroyed.
It is doing so by itself in California.
Seems appropriate that the GOP will die first in the State of Reagan, since he was never a true fiscal conservative
Change a few pronouns and platitudes and the above would apply equally to California Democrats.
More red team whining: They do it too!
BS
And besides, the demofascists don't whine. They win. And then they loot.
The republican party must be destroyed.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm not Team Red.
Strike out the whining -- which is merely a different kind of whining -- and what's different? I was in California during the budget deliberations. I know Democrats whine.
"The party is filled with gamers, liars, power-worship[pers] ... and fast talking con artists. A bunch of wannabe suck-ups who ... deliver nothing but the same old bs and make excuses for their leech-like existence."
The California Democrats are the MASTERS of the collective whine. It's an art form to them.
And besides, the demofascists don't whine.
Ok, that was funny.
Oil companies make obscene profits ... corporations put profits before people and the environment ... Republicans and their Wall St. friends control the political system ... greedy mortgage companies created the subprime mortgage crisis ... Bush's policies created the worst economy since the great depression ... gays are still being denied their civil rights ... Republicans are all racists ... Obama can't do what needs to be done to jump start the economy because of Republican obstructionism ... Republicans want to impose a theocracy on America ... Republicans want children to starve ... Republicans want old people to die ... Republicans favor only the rich ... Insurance companies deny people life-saving treatments just to make bigger profits ... Republicans want Obama to fail because he is black ...
This is CNN
... and the Democratic Party, but it is admittedly a fine distinction.
I should have mentioned Citizens United. More whine there than in Napa Valley.
CA Dems: "Yeah, I know all legislation we enacted blew up in our faces, but it's not like the Republicans did anything to stop us! It's clearly their fault."
CA voters: "That makes sense." [votes Democratic]
[snicker]
Hey...whatchoo lookin' at?
Last night I dreamed of attending a Reason meet-up (in Pittsburgh? don't remember). It was quite surreal. The whole staff was there, and a bunch of the regular commenters (none of whom I have ever met in person--so I guess my idea of their physical characteristics was influenced by their online personalities). One of the weirdest dreams I've ever had.
I think I would skip any kind of meet-up. I like the idea of these names as anonymous faces that have entertained me the last few years.
Were the left wingers there? Tony, Shrike, 03?
There we a lot of people that didn't speak at all--my brain populated a pretty decent sized convention room with a large number of eclectic looking people. There were some I could identify by what they said; others were the epitome of the basement dwelling troglodyte--mostly the trolls, who seemed to shy away from real personal contact.
The funniest was Gillespie, who kept morphing between his real photo countenance and that weird Henry Payne caricature (from the Coulter/Gillespie debate promo posts).
the trolls, who...shy away from real personal contact
A little too close to home, buddy.
Was the Jacket it's own entity?
It was impossible to look directly at the Jacket without feeling my mind slipping away to some dark corner of a forgotten city, preserved for aeons beneath the sulking waters of the Pacific.
I had an acid trip like like once. it was pretty sweet.
Nick despises "Jacket" references. It's good that you stayed away.
That's why I do it. If I ever meet Nick I would only talk about his jacket. He needs to learn how to have a sense of humour.
Yeah, if he's gonna wear that ugly 1970's lookin' thing he needs to embrace it and become one with his coolness.
I don't think it's ugly. But, I'm not exactly a New York fashion writer either.
It isn't important. The jacket doesn't matter.
PS
Nick thinks you're an asshole.
The Jacket looks like a reincarnation from the 60's.

Now that I think about it, there were a few folks over in the corner with some weird physical deformities who seemed to be chanting some unintelligible phrases over and over.
I appreciate being part of your dream then, although I should say,IRL I don't actually look like John Merrick's twin.
That's weird, I dreamed that I had sex with your mother while you were at some lame meet-up.
Even weirder, I dreamt I was in db's room in the basement listening to you having sex with db's mom.
That's nothing?
Tell me about it.
Picture a Star Trek convention but with uglier people, bitching about horrible, horrible reality as they get drunker and drunker and the three women present get prettier and prettier.

Never heard of it.
You a-holes had a Pittsburgh gathering and you didn't invite me? You know what? Fuck you guys.
Temper. Temper. And you wonder why you were not invited FOE:)
I think it's because my BMI is not high enough to represent the burgh.
That and your conviction that PM links would fail.
Evening Links, and it did. I made no prediction about P.M. Links.
What you did there, I am viewing it.
Can I be blamed that their rebranding gave me a way out?
What did I look like? I hope hideous.
I would think that in a dream you would be covered with warts.
For some reason I never spoke directly to you but there was some unidentified huge dude with tons of grotesque tats and a waist length ponytail wearing a Kevin Smith style coat.
Did STEVE SMITH attend?
I told you, there were parts of the dream I had forgotten. Thanks for that, jerkface.

The best way for the California GOP to get more support would be to promote communism.
That would still be to the right of the California Democratic Party.
We're still winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan.
http://www.reuters.com/article.....9T20120225
Just like in Iraq and Viet Nam before.
The best response.
...We actually could win hearts and minds in those places. But our armed forces aren't going to be the ones to do it. We would need an American Culture Missionaries Corps.
We can't win hearts and minds in America.
Sorry, the CA GOP blocked the killing of the "redevelopment authorities" when Democrats surprisingly were voting for it. They deserve to politically die.
On another note, is it too late to give California back to Mexico?
Is it too late to give California back to Mexico?
Funny every time!
No quiero.
Hooray for the Democrats! I have no doubt they'll give it to the electorate good and hard, as it should be.
Californians deserve everything they have coming to them. I'm going to laugh when they finally go bankrupt. Folks this is a great opportunity to watch left-wing policies fail completely. Study it wisely children and try not to repeat history.
Sadly as California goes, so goes the nation.
And your laughter will turn to tears when the crooks who run this country declare CA too big to fail and use your tax dollars and mine to bail them out. Of course the bailout will include huge pay increases for public union employees and bonuses for their bosses. Pop culture figureswill defend this as fair and compassionate andthose of us who complain will be called foul names.

Hollywood is an essential part of America. We need some gov't love too.
Conservatives, business owners, and folks with the means to do so, are leaving the state in droves.
If they are "conservatives" why do they insist on trying to turn every state they come to into a faithful replica of the shithole they left?
Those worthless bozos should stay where they are and fight it out instead of shitting up the rest of the West.
It's what the Massholes who head up to NH do too.
Except New Hampshire has held extraordinarily well, and it's still a great place to live. But still, dude. Fucking democracy, eh?
Why are people here so damned interested in reviving the Republican Party instead of building up a Libertarian one?
No no NO NO! We haven't given up on libertarianism! And we don't love Republicans, we hate them, what with their good-looking wives and swimming pools and jobs...
It's not that we've given up on the libertarian party, but moreso that we recognize a) it is extremely difficult to convince people to vote for a third party, even if one of the two major parties has been virtually relegated to third party influence levels and b) we find that a functioning opposition and a genuine possibility of said opposition gaining strength is critical to a functioning democratic society.
I'd be just as disturbed if my state were uniformly GOP with little chance for Dems to ever influence policy. Guaranteed one party control is rarely if ever a desirable state of affairs.
The trouble is that polities where the GOP has been virtually relegated to minor party influence levels are those where the voters are especially anti-libertarian.
See the link from my name, and read the essays linked from the bulleted list at the bottom of that page, which I wrote in the middle of the last decade. Tells you all you need to know why a specifically libertarian party in the USA is a permanent dead end.
I was a California Republican, and now I primarily throw my vote away on Libertarians in national and state elections. I just can't support a party that is increasingly the worst of both worlds--socially conservative and yet acquiescing to fiscal liberals and crony capitalists. Ick.
Honestly, my professional colleagues who are young are of a Libertarian mindset, though they can't quite bring themselves to admit it. The only hope for the Republican party here in my for-now beautiful state is a move to Libertarian platform. It's truly a no-brainer.
The only hope for the Republican party here in my for-now beautiful state is a move to Libertarian platform.
The CA GOP might try actually governing according to its own platform first before trying to co-opt the platform of a 1% party. GOP politicians might be surprised at how many votes can be won by matching actual governance to campaign rhetoric. Nobody likes buying a can of corn and opening it to discover it is filled with beets.
Hah--touche. That'd be a good start. But enough with the anti-gay rhetoric, already, eh?
If you are sensitive to talk of cans with corn in them, maybe you should avoid the internet. 😉
GOP politicians might be surprised at how many votes can be won by matching actual governance to campaign rhetoric.
The strategy becomes a bit muddied when you are nary a third of the legislature. You simply cannot pass any actual legislation to run on. The only thing the state GOP is capable of doing right now is standing athwart and yelling "stop!"
*sigh!* Stopping would be lovely!
I just can't support a party that is increasingly the worst of both worlds--socially conservative and yet acquiescing to fiscal liberals and crony capitalists.
Although I agree with the premise and share the skepticism of the GOP (and largely the libertarian voting trend in state elections), it is hard to paint the GOP as acquiescing to liberal fiscal policy considering that the GOP hasn't had a governing majority in the state legislature in two decades.
Hrm...you do remember the RINO governor?
The state repubs blow as hard as they do in DC. I'm done voting for the least worst, they're all lying, big government cocksuckers.

I'm not sure what career you're talking about but if I can get paid to have sex with multiple hot women, I am definately interested. Hot is the key word there btw. What's the salary and benefit package look like. Oh nevermind, I'll do it for free.
Are you the Olivia from Fringe. If so, I want to hook up with you. You can bring your double from the alternate univesre as well since with have the whole bi theme going on.
I have trouble deciding whether Fringe Olivia is attractive or not. She looks good in underwear, but her face is a little coarse and she walks like she's pretending to be tough.
Olivia Newton John was much better in her prime plus she has a better genetic lineage. Olivia Wilde is much prettier, but she looks a little desiccated. OW will look like a dried leaf by the time she hits 45.
I've grown more attracted to her over the years. I think that toughness thing is offset by her vulnarability thing. She's a girl, but if the SHTF she's got your back. Her double charactor just makes her that much hotter.
Yeah, and I had a huge cruch on ONJ back in the day. Just hitting puberty when she was starting to make it big in the States.
Kind of a cross between Sarah Jessica Parker (hideous) and Juliet from Lost (hot). The duality scrambles my circuitry too much for me to reach a definitive judgement either.
Whatever you may think of SJP's esthetics, she is favored in the Preakness this year.
Dammit, I left off the prefixing 'a'. Aesthetics is much more aesthetic than esthetic.
Olivia Munn
Yummy. Nom, nom.
Sorry, she's been sullied by contact with JJ Abrams' faux-fi excretions. Same for Zoe Saldana.
Have you seen olivia.com?
I had a horse named olivia.
What happened to her?
Yeah, the CA GOP is deep in the wilderness with zero chance of finding their way out...let's celebrate!
The best response.
Is that a Manny Ramirez poster on her wall?
I think that's Allen West.
That was awesome. I'd like to buy her a beer.

Despite being created to protect the public, government organizations like the FDA and the USDA are continually bowing down to biotech giant Monsanto through loose regulations and inadequate review processes. Beyond denying consumers the right to know if their products contain GMO ingredients, these organizations have taken it a step further and are now compromising public safety in favor of enabling Monsanto's profits to surge. In the latest move by the USDA, Monsanto's GMO crops are set to receive 'speedier regulatory reviews'. With the faster reviews, there will be even less time spent on evaluating potential dangers.
?
Is it any surprise that the FDA's food safety czar is directly connected to Monsanto?

In the state of Ronald Reagan (whose image is everywhere here), the Republicans are near death.
Near death is Hawaii, where about 90% of the legislature and 100% of the Congressional delegation are Democrats.
100% of the Congressional delegation are Democrats.
There are lots of small states where 100% of the Congressional delegation are from a single party at any given time, but that doesn't mean the other party is dead.

I think CA is like the Amy Winehouse of states.
differences:
1. CA is hot, at least in some places in the summer.
2. The sounds coming out of CA are generally unpleasant.
3. CA isn't dead yet.
4. CA bears lots of fruit.
5. Wood grows tall when in CA.
6. CA produces more wine than it consumes.
That was actually pretty good:)

Tesla's brick
http://jalopnik.com/5887265/te.....gn-problem
If (the Tesla's) battery is ever totally discharged, the owner is left with what Tesla describes as a "brick": a completely immobile vehicle that cannot be started or even pushed down the street. The only known remedy is for the owner to pay Tesla approximately $40,000 to replace the entire battery. Unlike practically every other modern car problem, neither Tesla's warranty nor typical car insurance policies provide any protection from this major financial loss?
Howls of derisive laughter!

We all hate California!!! Yayy!!!! Jesus Christ, the groupthink is amazing in here. You know why the Republicans are losing in CA? Because the Democratic machine is better and has been better for a while than the Republican machine has.
You know what will help save California? The Whig party, and I'm starting it. Whig party for 2016.
The GOP isn't just losing in California, they're losing really, really badly. And we're not talking about concentrated urbanized postage stamp states like DC or RI here, we're talking one of the largest states in the country.
Hate? I love California. It's just being run and plundered by a gang of fuckheads.
Northern California is nice.
And yet even more retard-saturated than the south.
Say what you will about progressives, but they do pick all the nicest geographical locations to FUBAR.
+infinity seems inadequate
Probably because people find it harder to vote with their feet when the place they live is nice like SF or has other inherent advantages like NYC.
San Fran is OK. The North Bay is so much nicer. Less bums, hypodermic needles in the gutters and needless nannyism from the locals.*
*I had a cop stop his cruiser and yell at me to put my cigarette out on a sidewalk when there were a bunch of bums sleeping on the grate I was standing beside. Talk about fucked up priorities.

Where the hell are they going if they're looking for more liberty? Certainly not the EU or Russia or Japan or China. Not sure how free Brazil or India are these days, but I can't see loads of Americans going there. Australia, Canada, New Zealand are good in their own ways but also bad in others. And that pretty much rounds out the developed world.
Say what you will about the US, but it's still the freest major country on earth.
Do you need to get 2 or three different permits from the local pubahs in China to sell lemonade?
Well, it ispretty hard for the little girls in China to set up their lemonade stands at the bottom of the wells they got tossed down.
I agree with Jeffersonian, and shame on those who would rather abandon California than stand and fight for her. I once flirted with moving northward, to Seattle or Portland, or even Vancouver! But then I thought better of it: Those are all great places, and I love to visit them, but I will not be chased out of the State of my birth by the aforementioned gang. It's them that need to be chased away. Central Coastal California is my country, and it is suffering not because of the hardworking immigrants from "south of the border," but because of wrong-headed invaders from north and east, and the dysfunctional, socialist ways they bring with them.
^^This^^ needs to be repeated as often as possible. I've only been here for 4 years, but this state is a wonderful place to live. I, for one, want to fight to save her from herself.
Don't. You are wasting your efforts.
Boy was that douchy.
Amen my good man. I love me some Paso Robles wine country trips. Planning on one for the spring time right now.
And although it ain't the state of my birth, I've been here since I was a wee lad. On top of that, my wife ain't gonna leave her family behind come hell or high water, so I'll continue swimming upstream.
I rather like being a contrarian anyhow.
Seattle and Portland ain't much better, numbnutz.
I've lived all over America and CA really does have it all, from redwood forests to skiing to beaches to surfing to ... just about everything except political sanity. It's a shame to watch it being wrecked.
What a robust defense of California. "Yeah, California is a fucked up, one party shithole, but that's only 'cause the Democrats have a really good organization there."
Uh, I love California and am sad to see the (incontrovertibly true) decline of its governance. I don't care whose "machine" is better, but wouldn't that be a reason to hate the state of politics in Cali?

California is essentially ungovernable. I don't mean that in the Porcupine/libertarian sense, where tax collectors get shot at and small communities govern themselves. California can obviously be governed in the sense that it can collect taxes, spend money, and bust heads. I mean it in the sense that publicly-minded, coherent governance is increasingly impossible.
There are limits to representative democracy, as with all human systems, and 140 million people crammed into one sorta-sovereign government just isn't workable. It's not an R or D thing.
There aren't 140 million people in CA.
There are almost twice as many people in the UK, which is essentially one big sovereign lump too.
No, the UK has just over 60million.
California has just over 30 million
If by "just over 30 million" you mean "nearly 40 million": 37.3M, to be exact, according to the latest census.
So Like Canada then
What Tulpa said below.
I thought we were talking about governable places.
280 million? Indonesia?
I thought we were talking about governable places.
Then why was UK brought up earlier?
140 million? Japan?
I have no idea why I thought 140 million. Huh, that'll learn me to doublecheck that stuff.
Maybe you were counting all those people living "in the shadows".
140 million? Japan?
I have no idea why I thought 140 million.
Japan is about the size of California geographically.
Germany has 81 million.
But they're a federal republic.
How many Chinks are there? They seem to be "governed" to me.
Hordes. Many, many yellow hordes.
