    Just to stress the point, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts @ Georgia Tech, offers 9 undergraduate degrees (I think there were 4 when I was there 20+ years ago). All 9 are Bachelor of Science degrees.

    Of the top 50 public universities, guess which has the largest alumni donation rate? Hint: they dont have any BA degrees.

      New Jerseyans are beyond hysterical when it comes to gun laws, and I fear that it will only get worse in the future. You should see the cockeyed looks I get from people my age when I tell them I'm going hunting or that there's 15 guns in my house.
      
      Even the more conservatively inclined are pretty anti-gun compared to the rest of the country; honestly, the only ones that aren't are the children of European immigrants and current hunters, and those numbers are becoming a smaller share by the year.

  I'd like to think that 20 years ago someone in Greek politics spoke up and said, "We better fix our debt problem before it's too late!" and some Greek Krugman scolded them and said, "Our borrowing costs are low, it would be foolish not to borrow to finance growth!" and/or "We can't possibly cut back on spending until we reach full employment, you heartless bastard!"
  
  Compared to what they're suffering now, 20 years ago it would have been cheap and easy for the Greeks to fix their problems. But they couldn't do that, because Keynesians can't stop gorging themselves until the day of disaster.

  There won't be a de jure default, because that would trigger credit default swaps (effectively credit insurance), which would crash some "too big to fail" banks with ensuing dominos falling.
  
  The International Swap Dealers Association (ISDA) has the authority to declare whether a credit event is a default that triggers CDS's. The ISDA will not declare even a 70% haircut on Greek bonds a default. Which is absurd, but trust me on this.

      Yes, this will increase the cost of issuing sovereign debt, as the risk will have to be fully priced in. That's not a bad thing, IMO.
      
      The litigation that follows this will be very interesting. The ISDA will be sued, of course. As will the issuers of the CDS's.

      There will be some holdouts. The deal will not receive 100% agreement (of that, I'm 100% certain). These holdouts are most likely to be "evil speculators". That will create a big issue for Greece. Will they pay these holdouts out at par? What a horrible message to send, pay holdouts at par after reducing notionals by 50% for participants. But if they don't want to pay them and reward them for holding out, it is hard to see how they can "screw" them without a default ? either failure to pay or some retroactive Collective Action Clause (both of which would be a Credit Event).

    That's the big difference between business people and people steeped in politics. Business people have to figure out how to get by given the way things are. Political people are always thinking of the world in terms of the way things should be. I'm susceptible to the latter myself sometimes, but it's important not to let how things should be infect my thinking about what I should do business-wise given the way things are right now.
    
    Warren Buffet has been able to thrive amid things like the Salomon fiasco and labor strife at the Washington Post; he was able to buy ABC through Cap Cities--in violation of FCC rules..., etc.
    
    All from behind a veneer of leftishness. So, saying what the left wants you to say can be good for business--and is probably a really smart thing to do.
    
    Of course, I'm not sayin' that's the way things should be, but I think that's the way things are.
    
    ...and the way things are? People on the left are getting played like a fiddle by people like Warren Buffet. I don't think it makes people on the left feel stupid to hear that though--many of them are incapable of imagining themselves being conned that way.

      Buffett makes his living partially from buying small business that the can't afford inheritance taxes at reduced rates. In contrast the Kochs make their money providing oil to the economy. Yet, Buffett is given great press and the Kochs are portrayed as bad guys.

        There are a lot of companies that spend a ton of money on trying to link themselves to some great cause. Some of it is wasted, I'm sure, but a lot of that is money well spent.
        
        My neighborhood dive supports a local little league team and probably buys tickets to the local fire department golf tournament every year, too. When his CUP comes up for renewal, that more than pays for itself, I'm sure.
        
        Buffet just does it on a grander scale. If that's what it takes to get things done, I don't necessarily blame the business guys for doing what they need to do to thrive. I blame us for demanding that sort of behavior from our politicians.
        
        If want us to let you make a profit, you have to be seen as doing something good for the rest of the community?
        
        That's not the businessman's fault. That's all ours.

Media Matters memo called for hiring private investigators 'to look into the personal lives' of Fox employees
A little after 1 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2009, Karl Frisch emailed a memo to his bosses, Media Matters for America founder David Brock and president Eric Burns. In the first few lines, Frisch explained why Media Matters should launch a "Fox Fund" whose mission would be to attack the Fox News Channel.

"Simply put," Frisch wrote, "the progressive movement is in need of an enemy. George W. Bush is gone. We really don't have John McCain to kick around any more. Filling the lack of leadership on the right, Fox News has emerged as the central enemy and antagonist of the Obama administration, our Congressional majorities and the progressive movement as a whole."

"We must take Fox News head-on in a well funded, presidential-style campaign to discredit and embarrass the network, making it illegitimate in the eyes of news consumers."

What Frisch proceeded to suggest, however, went well beyond what legitimate presidential campaigns attempt. "We should hire private investigators to look into the personal lives of Fox News anchors, hosts, reporters, prominent contributors, senior network and corporate staff," he wrote.

After that, Frisch argued, should come the legal assault: "We should look into contracting with a major law firm to study any available legal actions that can be taken against Fox News, from a class action law suit to defamation claims for those wronged by the network. I imagine this would be difficult but the right law firm is bound to find some legal ground for us to take action against the network."...

This morning, Joe Scarborough, to his everlasting credit, politely tried to get Jeffrey Sachs to admit that maybe money doesn't guarantee electoral success in light of Santorum's recent performance.

Sachs, at first, refused to accept his point and purposely changed the topic. But Scarbs brought it back and Sachs had to mumble "I still don't think it will matter, Romney will win" despite the previous 5 minutes of show when everyone went on and on about how Santorum has a real chance to win.

I'm willing to be he actively doesn't want candidates to win by spending less money because he'll lose the argument for why people like him should have more power over controlling speech.

    It is not a scandal in the sense that it is criminal. You are right, provided you don't break the wire tapping laws, you can investigate all you like.
    
    But it is a scandal in the sense that destroys Media Matters as in any sense of the word a trust worthy organization. Why do you really think figuring out whether one of the blonds on Fox and Friends is cheating on her husband? The only reason I can see is that you just want to personally destroy anyone who disagrees with your side and make sure people understand that if they don't stay in line ideologically, they better figure your entire life is now going to be made public.
    
    It is one thing to do that to a politician. They assume the risk. But do we really want a country where you do that to anyone who works in journalism or does any political writing? it would be one thing if it related to your professional life. If it turned out you were fabricating stories or something. But that is not what is happening here. The whole point is to deter people on the other side from speaking.

Isn't it amazing that the one thing everyone in the federal government seems to agree one, namely, extending this tax cut, is absolutely impossible to get passed? It's because the bitches refuse to just pass a bill with only that, and instead insist on using it as a wedge to get other stuff passed. And that other stuff is guaranteed to be anathema to the other side, to make it that much easier to blame them for raising taxes.

    But there are amazingly some GOPers who seem to oppose the tax by itself. It's incredible considering other positionst they've taken. I've heard them worry about the insolvency of SS or how it will be paid for. These were not concerns with the rich persons tax cuts last year.

        Santorum can be called a SOCON. But his record on the rest of government is appalling, worse than Romney. And Romney is just as much of a SOCON as Santorum. So that is a wash. Gingrich has his moments, but he is also pretty crazy and has a lot of big government skeletons in his closet. I don't see either one of them being particularly conservative over all. They have a few things about them. But they each have a lot that is not.

I've said a lot of supportive things about Christ Christie here. I don't like all his positions obviously but he seeme to have a fresh frankness and integrity. So I'm pretty disappointed to see him do this politically cowardly punt on the SSM bill. I guess he's trying to appease national so-cons or something, but it would be nice to see him do otherwise...

  I'd prefer him to simply step up and sign a bill (despite my chronic objections to state licensing of marriage) but it has been his position all along that this is an issue for the courts. Simply put, the punt is no surprise because he really just doesn't want to touch this issue. My guess is he thinks it should be a total non-issue politically but very few of us actually agree with him.

      I don't think Christie takes a stand just to take a stand; if he either doesn't know or care enough on an issue he prefers not to get into it. He likes to know enough about a subject to make a good argument for his position, which is a great asset since he's usually making an unpopular argument in his state, but means that he will do some things that are superficially out of character.
      
      I honestly expect him to grab the bridge of his nose and just say, "oh god, don't care. Don't care," whenever anybody brings up this issue.

Something really worth debating: if you were Irsay, would you keep Manning?

  You have to draft Luck. Top quarterbacks are too hard to find. Once you do that, you can't keep Luck for two reasons. First, it makes it impossible to pay Manning his $28 million meaning he is free to leave. And Manning has said he is not playing there to run a quarterback school for Luck. Second, Luck, being the top QB prospect since Elway, has said he won't play in Indy if Manning if he can't start. And guys of that caliber have shown in the past they can force their way out of a draft situation they don't like, see Eli Manning and Elway.
  
  So you can't keep them both. The choice is two years or three years of a definite maybe run with Manning or 15 years of the best QB prospect in 30 years. There really isn't any choice, although if I were a Colts fan I would have rather they won a few more games and just not had the choice. It is going to suck for them to see Manning playing somewhere else.

    It would probably be better, football-wise, for the Colts to do with Luck what the Broncos did with Elway--bring in a seasoned journeyman like Kyle Orton to nurse him along until he's ready, assuming that Orton or whoever else they bring in understands that they're simply keeping the seat warm and that they have no hope of starting beyond the 2012 season.
    
    The Colts can either draft Luck and let Manning go, or keep Manning, trade the pick, and risk him not being at full strength. The reality is that Manning is likely gone now that Irsay is talking trash on Twitter. No way he wants to pay a guy $26 million who's one hit away from maybe being permanently paralyzed.

      Manning is not close to being paralyzed. He has a damaged nerve that caused the tricept in his throwing arm to degenerate. Other players have had such an injury and come back fine. Nerves can and do regenerate, they just do so slowly at an unpredictable pace.

      But that roster bonus is not what it seems. Both sides knew it would never be paid. The roster bonus benefited Manning more than the Colts. Since Manning knew it would never be paid, even if he hadn't gotten hurt, it gave him an excuse to re-negotiate his contract come 2012. The conversation goes like this
      
      Manning: You owe me $28 million
      Colts: We can't afford that under the cap
      Manning: Okay cut me and I can go sign somewhere else
      Colts: No, lets renegotiate and give you a more cap friendly contract
      
      Manning wanted the roster bonus in there when he signed the contract but not because he actually planned to collect it. It is not quite what it seems.

Their receivers aren't nearly the caliber of Indy's (how many times did Dallas Clark save their ass on critical drives?), their defense has a swiss-cheese secondary and no interior pass rush, and their running game is Willis McGahee and a prayer.
        
        The Redskins probably wouldn't take him, either--the Shanahan offense is predicated on having a somewhat mobile QB for rollouts and moving pockets, and Manning's a statue at this point in his career. SF won't give up on Alex Smith now that he's led them to an NFC championship. Dallas, on the other hand, I could see happening. Romo's turned into this decade's version of Ken O'Brien or Tommy Kramer--someone who can keep you competitive, but won't lead you to the next level.

        Both the corners are 33 years old, and Champ made the Pro Bowl largely on reputation last year. Dawkins may not come back from his neck issues and he'd already lost a step or two, and there is no one else at the safety position that scares opposing defenses.

        Thomas has Pro Bowl ability if he can stay healthy. Decker's strictly a possession receiver, and Royal's a glorified return man at this point--even before Tebow became starter, he wasn't getting any balls thrown his way.

    Don't get me started on "The Wars". Although if you can find it, I recommend giving "The Phantom Edit" a watch. I found it on bit-torrent a while back. Amazing what competent editing can do.

      I knew Lucas the prequels were going to be horrible as soon as I saw they had some 8 year old playing Anikan or whatever his name is.
      
      In the original Star Wars, Luke was 18 or 19. He was the classic punk kid. But he was at least an adult physically. That made the story make some sense. But sorry, it doesn't make sense for an 8 year old to be out flying space ships, unless you are going to go Dune and make the kid some kind of totally fucked up intense super being. But the Anikan of Episode one was just a normal kid with one in a trillion hand eye coordination.
      
      When you put that together with the line you give, it becomes obvious that he was not originally supposed to be 8 but Lucas made him that way because his focus groups told him he would sell more toys that way.

        He may very well have been playing with the Paul Atreides idea, but in Dune, they built up to Paul's godlike status. They didn't just spring him on us like Lucas did with Anakin. And, of course, Paul was fifteen when introduced and eighteen or so when he started being godlike. No doubt that some Dune was in the mix for Star Wars.

        I think part of the reason for making him younger was also that he was trying to appeal to younger kids, not the adults who grew up with original movies.
        
        An older Anakin could have been the cocky rogue Han Solo-ish archetype that the prequels were missing. IMO not having that Han Solo style character really held the prequels back. That and Jar-Jar of course. They've been trying to make him into that in the Clone Wars animated series, but it's too little too late.
