"More is involved than the usual "fairness" via biological quota. The financial stakes are huge. Compared to women, white men disproportionally gravitate to wealth-generating fields--business, engineering and the sciences. This predilection will be no small matter in a few decades, and universities are justifiably nervous as the pool of future rich donors shrinks vis-a-vis those who majored in French literature."

What's odd is that I find this comment responsive and to the point.
Most of us prefer cucumbers.
You know why.
What about a nice ripe watermelon, that's been warmed in the sun?
Second choice.
Upon further consideration, why not both?
Do we not support Vegetable Rights?
Is this not the other side of the garden?
REASON*C'O'M. It is a serious & safe dating site for the bi-vegan...
Well, it certainly explains why men gravitate toward the wealth-generating fields.
This predilection will be no small matter in a few decades, and universities are justifiably nervous as the pool of future rich donors shrinks vis-a-vis those who majored in French literature.
Hah - hah! My alma mater is an engineering school. Suck it, universities!
Just to stress the point, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts @ Georgia Tech, offers 9 undergraduate degrees (I think there were 4 when I was there 20+ years ago). All 9 are Bachelor of Science degrees.
In the college of liberal arts. Bachelor of Science.
Of the top 50 public universities, guess which has the largest alumni donation rate? Hint: they dont have any BA degrees.
I'm sure State is hoping you married a nice coed who major in French lit, and that she'll give away your beer fortune to their program. Never underestimate the power of the MRS degree.
Im single. I wouldnt have married anyone from uga, on principle, anyway*. As far as Georgia State, eh, they will probably end up merged with GT someday anyway (unfortunately).
*that sentence is entirely not true, but I like to pretend it is.
Where's my bug spray? Place is getting infested with yellow jackets.
Go Dawgs!
Im single.
First, you get the beer. Then you get the power. THEN you get the women.
GT keeps setting a new record each year for % of incoming freshman who are females. DOOM!!!!!
Every year, another .1% higher! Go Yellowjackets!
I think we broke 25% while I was there and now 20 years later, they are over 30%! Maybe.
So, the dating pool is still Agnes Scott, huh?
Since 1889.
Yeah, I'm a product of that unholy union, so I'm aware of the dynamic.
30% female??? Goddammit, why did 18-year-old me have to be so goddamn focused on getting an education?
And yet, this is still valid.
WARNING: WHITE RAPPERS
What do you call a good looking girl on Tech's campus?
A visitor!
Yes, I would like fries with that.
Seriously? I know a Georgia Tech female graduate, and while not smoking hot, she is certainly very attractive, and well constructed, if you get my drift.
well constructed, if you get my drift
She's got the proper permits?
No you twit, she has a reasonable factor of safety.
my bad Auric. I never claimed to be a contractor, sheesh.
Dude, anybody who thinks that the girls at literally any southern campus aren't good looking should be sentenced to hang around New England schools for a while.
The combination of frumpy locals and tacky-looking Amy Fishers from LI and NJ makes the whole place look like a genetic dystopia.
That's a given, but I think the point was that Tech doesn't have a lot of girls in the first place.
"Thanks to his Internet contacts, John joins a small start-up and three years later patents a program to detect lying on the Web. It is widely licensed and John is an instant multi-millionaire. Though rich as Croesus he never sends a nickel to his "alma mater.""
John, hurry up, we need you! Also, I have a 12" penis.
Nor would I. I already paid for my education.
When I have the money to do it, I want to set up a scholarship program to pay the out of state tuition for KY residents to go to GT.
But, I doubt I will ever donate money directly. Unless I have enough to endow a brewing science program.
That's the only way I'd do it--to fund research I like.
I'm quite willing to research beer for anyone who wants to send me money.

You mean the faculty and staff are pooling their own money into a fund designated for this purpose, right? And that it's not taxpayer money that's being used?
It's Cincy. They'll be getting taxpayer money eventuall anyhow. Might as well hit the ground running.
It's Cincy. They'll be getting taxpayer money eventuall anyhow. Might as well hit the ground running.
I imagine it already is, though the article is hazy on that particuar point. Did you notice they quoted the school's "CEO" for the article?
How about throwing their dumb asses out if they don't bother to attend? Or is that politically incorrect?
Do you actually have to throw-out someone who doesn't show up?

students will get Visa gift cards for showing up everyday for school, being on time for class and not getting into trouble. Seniors would get $25 while underclassmen would get $10.
Is that per day?

I always felt they should've been paying me to waste my time in school.

Regardless of whether the word "redneck" was written on it, I would like to see somebody explain how flying a Confederate flag is both offensive and non-political. If it's offensive for what it represents, that's political speech.

Awesome. Fuck you prosecutor, find 12 people to convict this guy.
Remember, across the bridge in NJ, they were able to find 12 people willing to put a guy away for 5 years for having an unloaded gun in his trunk.
New Jerseyans are beyond hysterical when it comes to gun laws, and I fear that it will only get worse in the future. You should see the cockeyed looks I get from people my age when I tell them I'm going hunting or that there's 15 guns in my house.
Even the more conservatively inclined are pretty anti-gun compared to the rest of the country; honestly, the only ones that aren't are the children of European immigrants and current hunters, and those numbers are becoming a smaller share by the year.
New Jerseyans are beyond hysterical when it comes to gun laws . . .
Yep. That's why prosecuting someone on some spurious gun charge is like shooting fish in a barrel. I can't imagine being a politically attuned conservative or libertarian and living in a place so hostile to such a basic freedom.
True, that was ridiculous.
Fun Fact: in the BDP song "100 Guns", the protagonist is finally arrested in NJ.
Can't find 12 anti-gunnuts in NYC?
Well, there is the city council. How many members do they have?

Athens is burning.
Athens is besieged by riots, because ordinary Greeks understand what their leaders won't admit. The reforms imposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Greek creditors will delay but not avoid a sovereign default.
No, Athens is burning because someone told the Greeks they're not getting any more free stuff.
The Greek default is feta accompli
Can't work a saganaki pun in there, could you?
I tried using retsina in something, but it just didn't work.
I'd like to think that 20 years ago someone in Greek politics spoke up and said, "We better fix our debt problem before it's too late!" and some Greek Krugman scolded them and said, "Our borrowing costs are low, it would be foolish not to borrow to finance growth!" and/or "We can't possibly cut back on spending until we reach full employment, you heartless bastard!"
Compared to what they're suffering now, 20 years ago it would have been cheap and easy for the Greeks to fix their problems. But they couldn't do that, because Keynesians can't stop gorging themselves until the day of disaster.
Good thing we don't do that here.
Hell, the whole theory--as practiced--is that if disaster catches you up it's because you weren't gorging fast enough.
There won't be a de jure default, because that would trigger credit default swaps (effectively credit insurance), which would crash some "too big to fail" banks with ensuing dominos falling.
The International Swap Dealers Association (ISDA) has the authority to declare whether a credit event is a default that triggers CDS's. The ISDA will not declare even a 70% haircut on Greek bonds a default. Which is absurd, but trust me on this.
I believe you based on what I've seen already. It's fucking corrupt as hell, but it's what is going to happen.
Which was stupid, because it made things worse for countries like Ireland and Portugal, as there is no point in having a swap market when countries can't default, i.e. no free lunch.
By not declaring it a default, wouldn't that make all swaps worthless? What private creditor will buy sovereign debt if the insurance won't pay up?
You bet. The sovereign swaps will be worthless.
Yes, this will increase the cost of issuing sovereign debt, as the risk will have to be fully priced in. That's not a bad thing, IMO.
The litigation that follows this will be very interesting. The ISDA will be sued, of course. As will the issuers of the CDS's.
Nearly a month old so OBE? It's hard to tell as shit changes everyday over there.

There will be some holdouts. The deal will not receive 100% agreement (of that, I'm 100% certain). These holdouts are most likely to be "evil speculators". That will create a big issue for Greece. Will they pay these holdouts out at par? What a horrible message to send, pay holdouts at par after reducing notionals by 50% for participants. But if they don't want to pay them and reward them for holding out, it is hard to see how they can "screw" them without a default ? either failure to pay or some retroactive Collective Action Clause (both of which would be a Credit Event).

One of the first things I did professionally (as a law student) was review swap agreements as part of the due diligence for a bank acquisition.

White House Economic Adviser: 'We Need a Global Minimum Tax'
...Gene Sperling, director of the White House's national economic council, said today at an official meeting that "we need a global minimum tax":
"He supports corporate tax reform that would reduce expenditures and loopholes, lower rates for people investing and creating jobs in the U.S., due so further for manufacturing, and that we need to, as we have the Buffett Rule and the individual tax reform, we need a global minimum tax so that people have the assurance that nobody is escaping doing their fair share as part of a race to the bottom or having our tax code actually subsidized and facilitate people moving their funds to tax havens," Sperling said....
The Buffet Rule: Don't pay your taxes, hire an army of accountants to avoid taxes, and complain that you are not being taxed enough.
wait, didnt u get the hate-of-teh-week update to eastman?
Who's Eastman?
There's something to say for being seen as a paragon of the left when you're filthy stinkin' rich like that.
If Bill Gates had started his foundation and been seen as someone who was out solving problems like world hunger, etc. earlier? He probably wouldn't have had to suffer through that antitrust business like he did...
Now Bill Gates thinks Warren Buffet is a really smart guy!
That's the big difference between business people and people steeped in politics. Business people have to figure out how to get by given the way things are. Political people are always thinking of the world in terms of the way things should be. I'm susceptible to the latter myself sometimes, but it's important not to let how things should be infect my thinking about what I should do business-wise given the way things are right now.
Warren Buffet has been able to thrive amid things like the Salomon fiasco and labor strife at the Washington Post; he was able to buy ABC through Cap Cities--in violation of FCC rules..., etc.
All from behind a veneer of leftishness. So, saying what the left wants you to say can be good for business--and is probably a really smart thing to do.
Of course, I'm not sayin' that's the way things should be, but I think that's the way things are.
...and the way things are? People on the left are getting played like a fiddle by people like Warren Buffet. I don't think it makes people on the left feel stupid to hear that though--many of them are incapable of imagining themselves being conned that way.
Buffett makes his living partially from buying small business that the can't afford inheritance taxes at reduced rates. In contrast the Kochs make their money providing oil to the economy. Yet, Buffett is given great press and the Kochs are portrayed as bad guys.
Up north, the next door neighbor - who is a bit of a prick - had his chain of "Rent to Own" stores bought by Buffett.
There are a lot of companies that spend a ton of money on trying to link themselves to some great cause. Some of it is wasted, I'm sure, but a lot of that is money well spent.
My neighborhood dive supports a local little league team and probably buys tickets to the local fire department golf tournament every year, too. When his CUP comes up for renewal, that more than pays for itself, I'm sure.
Buffet just does it on a grander scale. If that's what it takes to get things done, I don't necessarily blame the business guys for doing what they need to do to thrive. I blame us for demanding that sort of behavior from our politicians.
If want us to let you make a profit, you have to be seen as doing something good for the rest of the community?
That's not the businessman's fault. That's all ours.
"we need a global minimum tax"
Yikes, overplaying their hand. At least wait until Lizzie Warren's 2nd term before starting this kind of talk.
we need a global minimum tax so that people have the assurance that nobody is escaping doing their fair share

Sperling is an unabashed liberal. And a Goldman Sach's lackey.
Only a left-wing, statist jackass could come up with something like this.
This is so rife with stupid it boggles the mind. Funny how a 'race to the bottom' for him would really just be monumental advance in individual liberty.
"He supports corporate tax reform that would reduce expenditures and loopholes, lower rates for people investing and creating jobs in the U.S., due so further for manufacturing, and that we need to, as we have the Buffett Rule and the individual tax reform, we need a global minimum tax so that people have the assurance that nobody is escaping doing their fair share as part of a race to the bottom or having our tax code actually subsidized and facilitate people moving their funds to tax havens," Sperling said.
Huh?
How about 0%?
The White House adviser then said that more details would be forthcoming, though "not in gory detail."
That "not in gory detail" utterance should in itself be cause to sack Sperling. But, he works for the WH.

Is that the same Obama who said tax cuts got us into this spending mess?

Media Matters memo called for hiring private investigators 'to look into the personal lives' of Fox employees
A little after 1 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2009, Karl Frisch emailed a memo to his bosses, Media Matters for America founder David Brock and president Eric Burns. In the first few lines, Frisch explained why Media Matters should launch a "Fox Fund" whose mission would be to attack the Fox News Channel.
"Simply put," Frisch wrote, "the progressive movement is in need of an enemy. George W. Bush is gone. We really don't have John McCain to kick around any more. Filling the lack of leadership on the right, Fox News has emerged as the central enemy and antagonist of the Obama administration, our Congressional majorities and the progressive movement as a whole."
"We must take Fox News head-on in a well funded, presidential-style campaign to discredit and embarrass the network, making it illegitimate in the eyes of news consumers."
What Frisch proceeded to suggest, however, went well beyond what legitimate presidential campaigns attempt. "We should hire private investigators to look into the personal lives of Fox News anchors, hosts, reporters, prominent contributors, senior network and corporate staff," he wrote.
After that, Frisch argued, should come the legal assault: "We should look into contracting with a major law firm to study any available legal actions that can be taken against Fox News, from a class action law suit to defamation claims for those wronged by the network. I imagine this would be difficult but the right law firm is bound to find some legal ground for us to take action against the network."...

African villagers embrace US role in hunt for Lord's Resistance Army leader
Central African Republic -- On the edge of this quiet town in the isolated forests of central Africa sits one of America's newest military outposts, a base made of grass surrounded by razor wire. Outside, a baby chimpanzee plays on a green rope, and three local policemen lounge in a pickup truck. Inside, up to 30 U.S. special forces plot the demise of one of the world's most elusive and sadistic rebels.
The U.S. troops arrived two months ago and by most accounts have yet to undertake any military actions. But their mere presence has transformed this tattered out-of-the-way enclave of Congolese refugees, Ugandan soldiers and traumatized local residents into an upbeat cluster of newfound hope.
At night, energized locals bang homemade 8-foot-long xylophones and straddle voluminous bass drums, crooning new tunes to celebrate their good luck. "The Americans are here/Our saviors are here/Let's dance" goes one such song.
"Americans are favored by God wherever they are in the world," said Bassiri Moke, a local chief. "We asked God to save us and the Americans came. We hope we won't have to die like before."

Which is it, Gingrich shows poor judgment or Gingrich would be a good presidential advisor? For the National Review, apparently both.
This morning, Joe Scarborough, to his everlasting credit, politely tried to get Jeffrey Sachs to admit that maybe money doesn't guarantee electoral success in light of Santorum's recent performance.
Sachs, at first, refused to accept his point and purposely changed the topic. But Scarbs brought it back and Sachs had to mumble "I still don't think it will matter, Romney will win" despite the previous 5 minutes of show when everyone went on and on about how Santorum has a real chance to win.
I'm willing to be he actively doesn't want candidates to win by spending less money because he'll lose the argument for why people like him should have more power over controlling speech.
Does Santorum have more money than Mittens?
Santorum has no money. That is the point, he is competing without money.
no he's got 10mil from that vegas bookie

There's a different billionaire backing Santorum, I thought.
Gingrich didn't even have a staff. And I think had he had any self control, he would be killing Romney right now. Yeah, every election money means less than the last.

Media matters memo called for the hiring of private investigators to look into the private lives of Fox News employees. If they actually did that, isn't that really a bigger scandal than the Murdock one? Murdock just tapped the phones of celebrities looking for gossip. At least they were looking for news. Media matters was looking to just destroy people.
It's not a scandal until we say it's a scandal.
Thats so 6 minutes ago.
Wilsonians call it justice.
I don't actually consider this a scandal.
I don't acknowledge any distinction between public and private figures.
Anything it's legal to do to a public figure - investigate, boycott, protest, and any derivative of those in the Cesar Chavez playbook that I'm forgetting right now - it's OK to do against a so-called "private" figure.
If all of a sudden I was a big shot politico in charge of the Fluffy Party, you can bet your ass Fox News would be investigating me eight ways to Sunday. What one man can do, another can do. (Or, as usual, I am entitled to let their action become my maxim.)
It is not a scandal in the sense that it is criminal. You are right, provided you don't break the wire tapping laws, you can investigate all you like.
But it is a scandal in the sense that destroys Media Matters as in any sense of the word a trust worthy organization. Why do you really think figuring out whether one of the blonds on Fox and Friends is cheating on her husband? The only reason I can see is that you just want to personally destroy anyone who disagrees with your side and make sure people understand that if they don't stay in line ideologically, they better figure your entire life is now going to be made public.
It is one thing to do that to a politician. They assume the risk. But do we really want a country where you do that to anyone who works in journalism or does any political writing? it would be one thing if it related to your professional life. If it turned out you were fabricating stories or something. But that is not what is happening here. The whole point is to deter people on the other side from speaking.
I say go ahead and do it.
Within weeks conservatives will be investigating liberal media douchebags, which is a much larger and more target friendly group of people
Besides, anything that destroys the traditional "news" media is a good thing.
what Maxxx said.
Liberdouche: "that conservadouche guy cheated on his husband."
Conservadouche: "that liberdouche guy, and his business, cheated on their taxes."
This is absolutely a valid point.
Media Matters pretends to be a nonpartisan organization. Obviously that's compete nonsense, and this is just piece of evidence #100 proving that.
If you discard that pretense, however, then investigating Fox News is just part of their mission statement.
Oh, now I get it:
http://img337.imageshack.us/im.....iberal.jpg
That's not really accurate. I think it's why people vote for democrats. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people getting free shit aren't liberal at all. In fact, they mostly have no coherent ideology. Of course, that's basically what the pie chart says anyway.
Like all those Republicans who say they are conservative, yet they hate free markets?
Isn't it amazing that the one thing everyone in the federal government seems to agree one, namely, extending this tax cut, is absolutely impossible to get passed? It's because the bitches refuse to just pass a bill with only that, and instead insist on using it as a wedge to get other stuff passed. And that other stuff is guaranteed to be anathema to the other side, to make it that much easier to blame them for raising taxes.
Zero hedge thinks the Republicans should give it to him and every spending plan he wants so that the debt ceiling comes up for a vote and the country gets downgraded again right before the election.
except the downgrade was due to strident internal politics, not the lack thereof, per the rating agency.
It couldn't have been due to our multi trillion dollar deficit and our total debt now exceeding GNP.
Right, exactly.
For o3 to be correct and John wrong, it would have to be true that we would have gotten the same downgrades if our debts totaled 10 bucks, but some Congresspeople fought each other on the floor of the House with swords.
I don't see that happening.
But that would be fucking awesome. I'd be all over C-SPAN to watch that.
The company, one of three major agencies that offer advice to investors in debt securities, said it was cutting its rating of long-term federal debt to AA+, one notch below the top grade of AAA. It described the decision as a judgment about the nation's leaders, writing that "the gulf between the political parties" had reduced its confidence in the government's ability to manage its finances.
"The downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenge," the company said in a statement.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08.....by-sp.html
"The downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenge,"
And that has nothing to do with Hairy Reed refusing to submit a budget or Obama making 1 Trillion dollars the new deficit floor, right?
$10 US debt. Congressional swordfighting deathmatch. That is an America I Can Believe In.
Hell, even with the current debt, if we can get the swordfighting implemented before Chuck Schumer retires I'll gladly pay an extra percentage or two over my absolute minimum pay-this-or-men-with-guns-will-come-for-you tax bill.
except the downgrade was due to strident internal politics, not the lack thereof, per the rating agency.
What the rating agencies actually dinged us for wasn't being bratty little snots, it was for being bratty little snots with no willingness to impose fiscal discipline.
well said
Really? Because you apparently disagreed with Fluffy for saying the same thing.
Well, fuck Fluffy.
Maybe he thinks we would be fine if they were well-mannered snots with no willingness to impose fiscal discipline.
They should do what McConnell threatened recently: bring the payroll tax, alone, to a successful vote immediately.
But there are amazingly some GOPers who seem to oppose the tax by itself. It's incredible considering other positionst they've taken. I've heard them worry about the insolvency of SS or how it will be paid for. These were not concerns with the rich persons tax cuts last year.
The rich persons tax cut?
evidently the gop wanted the payroll tax collected here in the US to offset their wealthy budds tax cuts to park their money & JERBS offshore.

The NYC that produced Chuck Schumer and Michael Bloomberg?
Welp, I'm definitely voting for Ron Paul now.
I wonder if John and I could start the day off agreeing on something: the CPAC endorsement of Romney was a (unfunny) joke.
Honestly, I haven't paid attention to it. Who goes to that thing? Even if it is legit, what difference does it make?
But I wonder if you can agree that something that bills itself as the Conservative Movement's Annual Conference choosing Mitt Romney is a joke.
The equivalent would be a Batman comicbook fan's convention picking Batman and Robin as the best Batman film ever.
Wait a minute.
What do you have against Batman and Robin?
Who were they going to endorse? Sanorum? They took a poll, someone had to win I guess. You could argue that any of the candidates winning would be a joke in that all of them are pretty flawed in some way.
Come on, Santorum and Gingrich, with all their problems, can reasonably be called conservatives.
Romney? It's like a LOR convention picking Saruman as Best Wizard.
Santorum can be called a SOCON. But his record on the rest of government is appalling, worse than Romney. And Romney is just as much of a SOCON as Santorum. So that is a wash. Gingrich has his moments, but he is also pretty crazy and has a lot of big government skeletons in his closet. I don't see either one of them being particularly conservative over all. They have a few things about them. But they each have a lot that is not.
I don't know what to tell you John, if you can't agree with me that a Conservative Political Action Committee choosing MITT ROMNEY isn't a joke I think you're just determined to argue with me over anything.
I guess it is a joke. I guess they should have not run the poll or accepted write ins. But I honestly don't see how anyone could have won that would have been any less of a joke than Romney.
Since you're suddenly super-pedantic with John, I thought I would point out it is the Conservative Political Action CONFERENCE.
And I have been there three times. The last time I walked out on Rick Santorum's speech because he sucked.
You're forgetting that John is all-in on Romney as long as he promises to kill people on other continents to make him feel safe.
Santorum can be called a SOCON. But his record on the rest of government is appalling,
Santorum is a lab-grade socon - all state in your personal business, no real concern about deficits, spending, size and scope of government.
Socons are like "socially liberal, fiscal conservatives" - whenever their social agenda clashes with their rhetoric on small government, the social agenda wins.
I want this exchange to keep going so that MNG can come up with more examples.
I wonder if John and I could start the day off agreeing on something: the CPAC endorsement of Romney was a (unfunny) joke.
John is constitutionally unable to agree with you.
But I will.
Fuck Romney. He's at least as much of a statist as Obama.
Planned Parenthood may have falsified records to pay for abortions with Federal money:

Planned Parenthood=ACORN this year.
Huge difference. ACORN is hwere you go to get a low-interest loan for your whorehouse for underaged girls.
PP is where you go to get those underaged whores an abortion.
Exactly.
Sounds like there are some vertical integration opportunities here.

FWIW, I maintain that kids wanting an overview of the Cold War should watch Dr. Strangelove all the way through.
I've said a lot of supportive things about Christ Christie here. I don't like all his positions obviously but he seeme to have a fresh frankness and integrity. So I'm pretty disappointed to see him do this politically cowardly punt on the SSM bill. I guess he's trying to appease national so-cons or something, but it would be nice to see him do otherwise...
I'd prefer him to simply step up and sign a bill (despite my chronic objections to state licensing of marriage) but it has been his position all along that this is an issue for the courts. Simply put, the punt is no surprise because he really just doesn't want to touch this issue. My guess is he thinks it should be a total non-issue politically but very few of us actually agree with him.
"Simply put, the punt is no surprise because he really just doesn't want to touch this issue."
That's what's going on clearly...It's a shame he won't man up and just sign it. It would have been the "Christie-ly" thing to do...
I'm not being smartassed here, I'm genuinely disappointed by him here.
I don't think Christie takes a stand just to take a stand; if he either doesn't know or care enough on an issue he prefers not to get into it. He likes to know enough about a subject to make a good argument for his position, which is a great asset since he's usually making an unpopular argument in his state, but means that he will do some things that are superficially out of character.
I honestly expect him to grab the bridge of his nose and just say, "oh god, don't care. Don't care," whenever anybody brings up this issue.
Maybe he just wants to stay out of the culture war. He wants to courts to settle it so he doesn't have to. I thought not being a culture warrior was supposed to be a good thing?
Having the courts decide things like this is what caused the culture war in the first place.
Punting on SSM? Where outside of the White House would you see such political cowardice?
Also, Christie might want to run for President in 4 years. Do you want to run as the guy who let TEH GAYZ marry in New Jersey?
Honestly, I could see a similar thing happening to Cuomo if he opens up fracking and/or has a major showdown with NY public sector unions.
I've said a lot of supportive things about Christ Christie here
FTW!
He should have held it hostage for economic concessions from the legislature, IMO.
The Amazing Obama Budget
He's proposing higher spending and deficits this year.
http://online.wsj.com/article/.....on_LEADTop
It's going to be pretty embarrassing when not one single democrat votes in favor of his budget proposal. Again. I'm not sure why he even bothered with this.
"It's going to be pretty embarrassing when not one single democrat votes in favor of his budget proposal."
I think this happened before, right?
Yep, last year--Senate killed it 97-0.
Again. I'm not sure why he even bothered with this.
"Do. Nothing. Congress."
It won't get voted on in the Senate anyhow.
Reid has already said they won't hold a vote on any budget in the Senate this year.
How you can say that and remain the majority leader is beyond me.
Or even a senator. That statement should get you kicked out.
I have to get away with something, now that they took away my insider trading.
Why the GOP doesn't play that every hour on the hour on every radio station in every state with a contested seat is beyond me.

Man, thought to be Iranian national, accidentally blows off own legs in grenade attacks in Bangkok.
Something really worth debating: if you were Irsay, would you keep Manning?
You have to draft Luck. Top quarterbacks are too hard to find. Once you do that, you can't keep Luck for two reasons. First, it makes it impossible to pay Manning his $28 million meaning he is free to leave. And Manning has said he is not playing there to run a quarterback school for Luck. Second, Luck, being the top QB prospect since Elway, has said he won't play in Indy if Manning if he can't start. And guys of that caliber have shown in the past they can force their way out of a draft situation they don't like, see Eli Manning and Elway.
So you can't keep them both. The choice is two years or three years of a definite maybe run with Manning or 15 years of the best QB prospect in 30 years. There really isn't any choice, although if I were a Colts fan I would have rather they won a few more games and just not had the choice. It is going to suck for them to see Manning playing somewhere else.
...15 years of the best QB prospect in 30 years.
How long did Ryan Leaf last?
Excellent point, except the only thing more foolish than drafting Luck would be not doing so, in the context of the Colts. I wouldn't pay a guy on this second or third neck surgery, who is 35 years old, 28 million dollars.
Sometimes you just have to take that risk.
It would probably be better, football-wise, for the Colts to do with Luck what the Broncos did with Elway--bring in a seasoned journeyman like Kyle Orton to nurse him along until he's ready, assuming that Orton or whoever else they bring in understands that they're simply keeping the seat warm and that they have no hope of starting beyond the 2012 season.
The Colts can either draft Luck and let Manning go, or keep Manning, trade the pick, and risk him not being at full strength. The reality is that Manning is likely gone now that Irsay is talking trash on Twitter. No way he wants to pay a guy $26 million who's one hit away from maybe being permanently paralyzed.
Manning is not close to being paralyzed. He has a damaged nerve that caused the tricept in his throwing arm to degenerate. Other players have had such an injury and come back fine. Nerves can and do regenerate, they just do so slowly at an unpredictable pace.
I wouldn't. Everything seems to be lining up perfectly for an opportunity to start fresh. The Manning-loyal fanbase could even be assuaged a little by "leaking" some information about secretly wanting Manning to not have to endure a rebuilding process this late in his career and hoping he goes somewhere where he can win now.
I say ditch him. My prediction is, if Manning doesn't retire, he'll be in Miami next season.
For $28 million? Hell no. Well, I guess I might have to give it a little consideration if the Colts were still close to contending for a title, but they're in full rebuild mode now.
As you know, I'm big on employers trying to do honest by workers who have committed and performed well for them.
But I think Irsay has to let him go. It's a gamble with the entire organization to put up that money when you might get nada for it.
But that roster bonus is not what it seems. Both sides knew it would never be paid. The roster bonus benefited Manning more than the Colts. Since Manning knew it would never be paid, even if he hadn't gotten hurt, it gave him an excuse to re-negotiate his contract come 2012. The conversation goes like this
Manning: You owe me $28 million
Colts: We can't afford that under the cap
Manning: Okay cut me and I can go sign somewhere else
Colts: No, lets renegotiate and give you a more cap friendly contract
Manning wanted the roster bonus in there when he signed the contract but not because he actually planned to collect it. It is not quite what it seems.
Peyton at his cap hit and age is only useful for a team that can make a run for a championship. The Colts are not that team. Draft Luck, cut Peyton if you can't trade him, start over.
Bill Polian's nepotism killed that team. They're in for a few more years of pain with or without Peyton.
No way.
Polian wanted to draft RG3, Irsay wants Luck, which is why Polian is gone and Manning is as good as gone.
Ditto everyone else. Manning goes. He'll make an excellent "bridge" quarterback for Arizona or Washington.
Ironically, Manning would probably be better-served going to a team with a run-heavy offense, if for no other reason than it would be fewer opportunities for pass rushers to tee off on him.
Yep. If he makes the mistake of going to the Redskins for the big money, that offensive line might get his spine broken less than halfway into the season.
Hello, Denver.
I think he wants a ring. Which teams out there are close to a ring, but for their shitty QB play? Denver's one. How about the Redskins? SF? Dallas, if you think that Romo can't get in done under pressure?
Manning in Denver would be awesome, and it would get Elway Executive of the Year.
Denver's nowhere close to a ring, even if they brought in Manning. Their receivers aren't nearly the caliber of Indy's (how many times did Dallas Clark save their ass on critical drives?), their defense has a swiss-cheese secondary and no interior pass rush, and their running game is Willis McGahee and a prayer.
The Redskins probably wouldn't take him, either--the Shanahan offense is predicated on having a somewhat mobile QB for rollouts and moving pockets, and Manning's a statue at this point in his career. SF won't give up on Alex Smith now that he's led them to an NFC championship. Dallas, on the other hand, I could see happening. Romo's turned into this decade's version of Ken O'Brien or Tommy Kramer--someone who can keep you competitive, but won't lead you to the next level.
SF won't give up on Alex Smith now that he's led them to an NFC championship.
That should read, NFC championship game.
Denver's defense is 1 good corner and 1 defensive tackle away from being dominant, Decker, Royal and Thomas are better than Wayne, Garcon and Collie, and they have one of the best O-lines in the league. With a good draft and a couple of other free agents, Manning could win a Super Bowl in Denver in the next 2 years, and maybe Tebow could learn to throw by then.
Denver's defense is 1 good corner and 1 defensive tackle away from being dominant
Both the corners are 33 years old, and Champ made the Pro Bowl largely on reputation last year. Dawkins may not come back from his neck issues and he'd already lost a step or two, and there is no one else at the safety position that scares opposing defenses.
Decker, Royal and Thomas are better than Wayne, Garcon and Collie
Thomas has Pro Bowl ability if he can stay healthy. Decker's strictly a possession receiver, and Royal's a glorified return man at this point--even before Tebow became starter, he wasn't getting any balls thrown his way.
they have one of the best O-lines in the league
They have one of the most inconsistent O-lines in the league--they might look great for a drive or two, and then completely fall apart and not clear the road on 3rd and short.
With a good draft and a couple of other free agents, Manning could win a Super Bowl in Denver in the next 2 years, and maybe Tebow could learn to throw by then.
It took Elway until the end of his career to win a Super Bowl, and that was with a roster stocked with two other Hall-of-Famers, the NFL MVP carrying the rock, and perennial Pro Bowlers on both sides of the ball.
There's a reason Denver finished 4-12 just two seasons ago and have only won two playoff games since Elway retired, and it wasn't because they were running the read option.
Romney is going to pour a shitload of money into Michigan. He's got two weeks to utterly destroy Santorum, and you know he's going to do it. Romney has to win Michigan. Absolutely has to. If he doesn't, the narrative will be that Santorum is jus' folks, winning the blue collar, blah blah blah. Somehow Santorum is transforming into what Pawlenty was supposed to be. I always thought they looked similar...
"Romney is going to pour a shitload of money into Michigan."
It will be like Florida redux. I heard for every ad Newt had Willard ran like 60.
The optimist in me is hopeful that these ads help "real conservaties" realize that Santorum shares next to nothing in common with the original, supposed, origins of the Tea Party.
The pessimist realizes that, alas, it's Romney who then re-emerges as choice-du-jour.
Still hot at 57?

She has some worthwhile attributes. Just don't link to the Ivana Trump photos!
Maybe if she wore some reasonable clothes and got rid of that absurd expression on her face.
and got rid of that absurd expression on her face
Between all the plastic surgery she's had and her shitty attitude, I don't think it can be helped.
Yeah, remember what your mom used to say about your face sticking like that? Hers stuck.
Expression? I thought her lips disturbed a wasp nest.

Still hot at 57?
Body? Yes. Face? Grade-A horror movie.

Plus, the Navy already gave up JAG for budget reasons. What more can the country sacrifice, I ask you?

Nick Cage ain't a vampire, just a piece of code
A former Marine who's facing criminal charges after trying to check his Indiana-registered handgun at the Empire State Building has turned down a plea deal, his attorney said.
I *could* be induced to like Mitch Daniels if he got Bloomberg to come to Inpls and then had him thrown in the clink for some bullshit violation of Indiana law.
But I'm pretty sure Bloomers has no cause for concern.
So could I. And good for him for turning down the plea deal The New York laws are unconstitutional.
Weirdest ad ever but reminds me of libertarianism
If Santorum wins the GOP nomination, Obama wins the general election, hands-down. There's no way Santorum survives the media onslaught against his neanderthal social conservative views, and I can't imagine any libertarian-leaning independents would pull the lever for this douchebag.
That said, I want him (and Paul) to remain competitive because I want to see a brokered GOP convention.
And then what?
A Palin / Giuliani ticket?
Did anyone see the Santorum birth control comments MSNBC kept running yesterday? He basically said it was an unChristian thing to do to take birth control, that it was a grant of "sexual license."
That guy can't get elected.
""One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country?. It's not okay. It's a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be."
Nature vs God. Who will win?
He wants us to think that "grant of sexual license" is a bad thing?
I've been doing it without a license anyway.
Exactly. His social views appeal to a shrinking minority of the population and, unlike a lot of social conservative politicians, he doesn't keep his mouth shut about them. The vast majority of the US population does not want 1950's social mores imposed on the population by the government.
What are 1950s mores?
It was meant as "1950 s'mores." And Michele Obama has already said she won't allow it.
There's no way he can get elected but the smart play for Democrats is to hold off until he's been nominated, then attack with full force. You won't hear much about his crazy views until he's locked in the nom.
I think most people know Santorum is a socon. The guy has been around forever. So I doubt those attacks would make much difference. It could be that people will get all riled up about the culture war. Or it might be that they just won't care in a year when the economy is this bad.
That's bizarre. Even the evangelicals I know would not agree with that, at all.
Makes me wonder about the conspiracy theory that Obama set off the birth control debate to skew the primaries in his direction.
Yeah, same. I think a brokered convention is the only chance for the GOP to have anything worth a shit in its platform this go round, and I'd also like a brokered convention because it would break the monotony of these boring ass presidential campaigns. I really really hope Gingrich's ego prevents him from dropping out. Hopefully, he can score a few wins on Super Tuesady, enough to let him do the math and see it's not settled. I'm thinking with four candidates sticking it out, the delegates could easily be divided pretty evenly.
If they are going to spend millions on a convention, they might as well actually do something at it.
It would be amazing for the thing not to be a TV spectacle but instead a bunch of assholes in a back room beating each other to death, trying to assemble a majority of delegates.
Actually, I take that back: that would make an awesome TV spectacle.
Exactly.
Come Nov., nobody's going to pay att'n to who the Republican nominee is or any of the particulars about him. He'll just be Not Obama. Obama might beat Not Obama or vice versa, but that's all it'll be this time.
Gene Sperling, director of the White House's national economic council, said today at an official meeting that "we need a global minimum tax":
Was this gem of wisdom greeted with raucous applause from the nodders at Morning Joke?
"Then she continues on to kvetch about how much money the damn extreme feminists are costing the American people with their absurd demands that the military combat rape of female soldiers. More than $100 million a year in feminist bureaucracy designed to prevent sexual assaults in the military!"

Magazine covers are touched up? No, I simply won't believe it.
If it gets banned in Britain we'll know for sure.
I wonder how much money they are spending to combat false accusations of sexual assault.
Maybe we should ask Al Franken.

Jezebel in deep shit over rape photos
I may have already posted this, but it would appear that this THE big story of the feminist blogosphere, with a lot of people publicly quitting the site.
The Jezebel link was posted yesterday. I don't remember anything about people quitting the site -- just some very stupid comments about it not being feminist.
It's big on the Twitter:
http://twitter.com/#!/search/#nojez
Okay, I can't figure out how to post Twitter searches. It's hashtag is #nojez
I took a look at a few of the more feminist sites and didn't see anything about it. But apparently, Rick Santorum killed Whitney Houston or something.
It's received coverage on places like The Frisky, but not Feministing. Go figure that.
Jezebel is just receiving some karma payback for their Duke lacrosse team "rape" coverage.
Good fucking riddance.
Public bans mean smokers light up less at home.
Nannies will feel vindicated by this... we're screwed!
NRO Picked Santorum over Romney?
I can only imagine K. Lopez's tears.
Lopez is a nut. She really believes that porn should be banned and Griswald should be reversed. I never got her Romney love in the first place. He is not nearly far enough right socially for her.
Also, one thing I never understood: If your name was Willard Mitt Romney, wouldn't you just go by Bill?
Bill Romney sounds like a normal guy that your dad used to bring around to work on the car and have a beer while they watched the game. Hell, even Will Romney sounds like the nerdy guy from high school. Willard Romney would be the president right between Grover Cleaveland and Chester A. Arthur. But Mitt?
I think his name alone loses him a ton of votes.
That is a good point. I think in the upper class twit circles he runs, being called by a stupid nickname or diminutive is kind of a badge of honor. See for example Pinch and Punch Salzburger of New York Times fame.
Newt?
That is another one. But I am not sure Newt was upper class.
I don't think he was.
Either way he's got as much class as school at five in the morning.
OH YOU DONE DONE IT!
I think Newt is a product of the South. Like the name Beauregard.
But I like the name Beauregard. I just like saying it with an Old South drawl.
Also, one thing I never understood: If your name was Willard Mitt Romney, wouldn't you just go by Bill?
The Mitt is short for "Mittens".
He was named for his mother's childhood cat.
There seems to be some kind of mystical connection between names and the person. You are right Bill Romney sounds like a normal guy who would come in and fix things a bit. And Mitt Romney sounds like a smarmy little shit who will come in, collect a big fee, and leave without doing much. Mitt is the latter and has the name to fit. Maybe the name Bill didn't take for a reason.
Mitt also has a bit of an Al Gore Ima Robot issue. He comes across as pretty mechanical and plastic like Al Gore did, sometimes.
You wonder too how many people are honest with somebody about something like that. I bet a lot of people are more likely to tell their wives that their buts are getting kinda big before they'd tell their boss that his name kinda sucks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GibocTxjmw
The problem is by the time it becomes an issue, it is too late. Romney can't start going by Bill like John Cougar going back to Mellencamp.
I always wonder how that went down... "John, you're just too ugly. We can't sell you as a tough guy, but there's 40 million failed musicians who are worse song writers than you driving tractors and pushing wrenches."
I think it went down, hey John, here is your record contract, don't like it, fine, we will sign someone else and hey I hear they are coming to shut off the electricity and take your kids today.
The problem is by the time it becomes an issue, it is too late.
That's a problem with a lot of chicks' asses, too.
And John sounds like a dude who can't get laid without ponying up some cash.
all guys pony-up cash to get laid & st valentines is perhaps the worst.
What Orin said. It is all prostitution just some of it is legal and respectable.
Also, could people stop blaming Norquist for the "No new taxes" thing? Yes, his group advocates that position and goes after pols who don't sign it.
Here's the thing: It wouldn't matter if people just ignored him and his group. It's like blaming the AARP for us never being able to cut entitlements or the NRA for gun policy. Ultimately, it is the fault of the voters who listen to these groups, and not the groups themselves.
If there was any reason to believe new taxes would actually go to reducing the deficit and or debt, I might be more inclined to have a problem with Norquist. As it is, any money they raise will be wasted anyway. So why agree to it?
this makes intellectual sense even if i dont agree.
Congrats, John, you made it past Orrin's rigorous intellectual filter.
it is the fault of the voters
Don't you mean the Boomers? Are they not to blame for all our maladies?*

"did I miss the meeting where we decided that men get a say in how women feel about their bodies? 'Cause I'm not on board. My confidence in my body will NOT depend on whether on not the majority of dudes think I'm fuckable."
http://feministing.com/2012/02.....full-stop/
Statements like this are directly correlated to a lack of people wanting to fuck you.
If people did not care about the way you looked, neither would you. So, yes, your confidence would be defined by whether or not the target sex finds you appealing.
If everyone is beautiful, no one is beautiful. Luckily, everyone at Feministing is beautiful.
Congratulations, she's discovered about half of the benefits of lesbianism.
My confidence in my body will NOT depend on whether on not the majority of dudes think I'm fuckable.
Of course, the fact that she feels the need to assert this publicly pretty much proves that, yes, in fac, her confidence in her body will depend on whether on not the majority of dudes think she's fuckable.
I just thought it meant she was fat.
Same diff.
The post danced a little too close to the uncomfortable fact that women are far harder on women's looks than men. Which still the fault of the patriarchy mumble mumble.
u mean who's less fat?
Kid from Liar Liar: "My teacher says real beautie's on the inside."
Jim Carrey: "That's just something ugly people say."
Oh, for the love of fuck! That picture is the biggest load of bullshit. A fatty in denial had to have labeled it. That size "8" is more like a size 2/4, that size "12" is more like a size 6/8, and that size "16" is more like a size 12. Sorry fatties, you are not this skinny. Deluding yourself will not magically make you look like this.
a bunch of assholes in a back room beating each other to death, trying to assemble a majority of delegates.
And, when the all-powerful potentates of the RNC suddenly manifested themselves on the podium to announce the ticket (Daniels / Christie 2012, Praise God!), only a handful of people would even bother to say, "Time out! What the fuck just happened?"
Cool story, bro.
Since no one likes any of the current candidates, I doubt their pleas for fairness would be well received.
So, you and Pro Lib are going ahead with Operation Electric Koolaid at the convention in Tampa, then?
I'm going to get the nomination and run quasi-anonymously as "Pro Libertate."
Only if you wear a purple toga at all public appearances.
That's silly. A white toga with a purple fringe, demonstrating my status as a patrician magistrate.
It will be Pawlenty/Daniels.
Stupid Pawlenty. He probably would have been the frontrunner for months now had he not blown up after the completely meaningless Iowa Straw Poll, won by Michelle Bachmann many moons (and frontrunners) ago.

WaPo is mad 'cause people can now buy more than 1 handgun per month in Virginia
Perhaps some conservative leaning organizations should start doing private investigations on the writers and editors of WaPo and other leftists media.
"To discard a law that has been effective for almost 20 years makes no sense."
Except the only "evidence" of its alleged effectiveness is from the Brady Bunch.
and the reduction of murder in NYC using guns traced-back to virginia
It's not VA's problem that NY has overly restrictive gun laws.
You said it bra. and keep buying guns afore barry takes em ALL !!
The overall murder rate went down, dumbass.
what i said. it gets sum coffee
So the criminals get their guns elsewhere. Big deal. The criminals always get their guns somewhere, even with a universal ban.
i used to read that authoritarian rag. the internet and choice cured my ills.
So, on second watching, something that bugs the shit out of me about Phantom Menance.
Obi-wan(in reference to Padme): She's the youngest queen ever elected.
WOAH WOAH WOAH, back the fuck up. Naboo is an ELECTED monarchy? And they think that electing a 13 year old is a GOOD idea? And we're supposed to be ROOTING FOR THESE DUMBASSES?!
Seriously, this is why evil shall always win- because Good is dumb.
Maybe they elected her because they thought she was hot. Or maybe they pick amongst the sisters and the older ones were nutcases.
But yeah, that is a really stupid line. It would be nice if Lucas ever bothered to read his own scripts.
Or go back over what he had written in the original trilogy.
Obi-Wan talking to Luke about his father: When I met our father he was already an excellent pilot. I was amazed at how strongly the force was with him.
No he wasn't, he was some twit kid from a backwater hellhole who got lucky (Let's try spinning, that's a good trick). And Obi-Wan initially agreed with the Jedi council wrt training little orphan Ani. It wasn't until after Qui-Gon died that he agreed to train him.
Don't get me started on "The Wars". Although if you can find it, I recommend giving "The Phantom Edit" a watch. I found it on bit-torrent a while back. Amazing what competent editing can do.
s/b *your father above. It's early.
I knew Lucas the prequels were going to be horrible as soon as I saw they had some 8 year old playing Anikan or whatever his name is.
In the original Star Wars, Luke was 18 or 19. He was the classic punk kid. But he was at least an adult physically. That made the story make some sense. But sorry, it doesn't make sense for an 8 year old to be out flying space ships, unless you are going to go Dune and make the kid some kind of totally fucked up intense super being. But the Anikan of Episode one was just a normal kid with one in a trillion hand eye coordination.
When you put that together with the line you give, it becomes obvious that he was not originally supposed to be 8 but Lucas made him that way because his focus groups told him he would sell more toys that way.
I think merchandising is where Lucas went wrong in the first place, so I buy that.
He may very well have been playing with the Paul Atreides idea, but in Dune, they built up to Paul's godlike status. They didn't just spring him on us like Lucas did with Anakin. And, of course, Paul was fifteen when introduced and eighteen or so when he started being godlike. No doubt that some Dune was in the mix for Star Wars.
Midichlorians did it.
I don't ever want to hear the "M" word ever again.
I was thinking more of Paul's younger sister who was born with all of the knowledge of every previous generation in her lineage. Now that is an 8 year old you could see flying space ships. But Ankian was hardly that.
Deus ex machina. In the pejorative sense.
You didn't like Paul's younger sister?
I meant Anakin. Alia was great, like most of Dune.
Sting was still better as The Bellboy.
Merchandising! Where the real money from the movie is made
I think part of the reason for making him younger was also that he was trying to appeal to younger kids, not the adults who grew up with original movies.
An older Anakin could have been the cocky rogue Han Solo-ish archetype that the prequels were missing. IMO not having that Han Solo style character really held the prequels back. That and Jar-Jar of course. They've been trying to make him into that in the Clone Wars animated series, but it's too little too late.
I have a faint hope that Lucas will die in the next ten years and a few years after that the kids will run out of money and license the prequels for remakes. I think they could have been good in the right hands. They are the perfect candidate for remakes.
Anything's possible, but I'd think his kids would have to develop a pretty epic coke habit to squander all of his money in just a few years. Perhaps we could help them along? Know any coke dealers?
Some is never enough. Don't ever underestimate people's ability to spend money and want more.
He should just come out and say that the prequels were a bad Force-induced dream. Then release the sequels over which he relinquishes all control.
Dude, your problem is you think the prequels are canon. They're not; they're simply CGI dogshit.
In fiction, no one is allowed to lie or be wrong unless the faleshood is crucial to the plot.
If this is a part that really offends you, you need to go in for 3rd viewing.
These are the same people who made Jar-Jar Binks the other Senator. I'm thinking a visit from a Death Star would be a mercy.
RRRRAAAAACCCCCiiiiSSSSttttt
Also, stop giving Lucas your money. The next time I give him a dollar, it will be passed directly from me to him after I've wiped my ass with it.
This. I paid my money for the prequels. Now I'm done. Lucas can go die in a fire before I give him any more money.
Stupid movies!
King Arthur: I am your king.
Woman: Well I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Woman: Well how'd you become king then?
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.
Dennis: Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
The Phantom Menace totally sucked ass. Why even bother to look at details?
Every president we've had has been an adult (and male). Most of them have been complete assholes and brought our country closer and closer to ruin. Perhaps a young Natalie Portman being in charge would not be so awful.
But she still won't show tits.
She certaintly couldn't be worse than our current president. Plus, eye candy, so there would at least be that.
That was and still is my theory about Sarah Palin. Unless she declares a dictatorship, she couldn't possibly be worse than what we have. And she as it least pleasant to look at and seems like a nice person.
palin's 15mins are ending, cept to grift the kunckle-draggers trying to peak up her dress
She is still wildly popular among Republicans and gives a great speech. Obama would give his nuts, if Michelle hadn't already cut them off, to get the kind of reaction she got at CPAC.
she as it [sic] least pleasant to look at
See her lately? Looks like Peggy Hill's maiden aunt.
HAve you seen Obama, Gingrich, Mittens, Santorum, Hillary and pretty much everyone else in politics? It is all about punching above your weight class.
The reason the "elected Queen" thing really bothered me is because it's of a piece with Greedo shooting first.
Lucas set up a political system that included feudal elements (Leia is a bona fide Princess with real political power until her planet gets blown up) in the OT, and then decided in the PT to retconn that out because "kids should only learn about democracy" or some such shit.
It's just like "it sends a bad message to kids that Han shoots first" and the Spielberg version "I don't want kids to see guns so I will digitally change the guns to keys in ET".
Patronizing behavior by movie directors is annoying, guys.
And it is killing movies. You want to know why movies in the 1970s were so much better than movies today? Movies back then treated their audiences like adults.
What's even funnier is, IIRC, the monarchs have term limits.
Actually elective monarchy is a real thing. Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Holy See use it. In fact Malaysia even has term limits like in the movie.
Sorry, meant to post this link to confirm,

How the fuck is this possible?
Kill me now.
Clearly we've reached peak stupid.
I expect the Republicans to regain control of the Senate and gain a stronger hold in the House. If that happens, I would rather have Obama be reelected than put Romney. I'd rather have gridlock, name calling, and fighting all the time than see more BS being dumped on all of us.
Those are polls of registered voters not likely voters. Likely voters, and polls that are properly weighted to reflect party demographics likely look different.
Uh, John? Rasmussen is of likely voters. And it's just as bad.
I don't see where it says that. The Rasmussen site says "america's voters." I can't find a single poll of "likely voters" on the site. Where are you finding that/
The good thing that may come out of this is that Santorum and Obama are so disgusting to a sizeable portion of the public, they give Gary Johnson a(nother?) look. I still think Romney will pull it out, but if Santorum wins Texas and California (where he was last seen behind Romney by about 2%), maybe not.
Nice; Tim Geithner, Tax Authority, is testifying on tax reform policy before the Senate right now.
Short version:
"Gimme yur munny, Richie Rich!"
"Modest increases in the marginal tax rates," sez Timmay, "would be more fairer. Because we know what fairness is. So cough it up, you fucking evil wealth-hoarding plutocratz."
How about making the 50% who don't pay any income taxes beyond FICA and medicare pay just a little bit first?
"And WE ONLY HAVE A DEFICIT BECAUSE YOU FUCKERS INSIST ON KEEPING YOUR MONEY FROM US, YOU INGRATES!"
Get used to it, none of the Republicans can win.
Maybe Obama's budget is a ploy to add a Nobel Prize in Literature.
/end joke handle/
...to his collection.
Do they give out awards for comedic writing?
Some Senator: "Tax reform in an election year? Are you fucking nuts? We'll TALK ABOUT tax reform from now 'til November, but we have intention whatsoever of actually DOING ANYTHING about it."
He needed the change in scenery.
Obama: "There are only a handful of people in America who are not starving. Abject poverty is rampant. Millions of people have been reduced to scratching in the dirt for subsistence, while plutocratic robber barons drink their life's blood. I weep for America. This country sucks, and I will continue to wildly cast the blame in all directions in order to divert attention from my own complicity as long as I hold office."

The bottom line is that economists like Howard Gleckman and Bruce Bartlett agree that extending the "temporary" payroll tax holiday is not the best way to stimulate the economy because it is poorly targeted and won't be paid for. http://bit.ly/uvIDMJ
Also, according to this chart from Ezra Klein, the 2011 payroll tax cut only accounted for 0.2% of the 1% growth in GDP due to personal consumption. http://wapo.st/vJuYMH
If last year's payroll tax cut only raised GDP by 0.2% in a year how can economists like Mark Zandi argue that extending the payroll tax holiday for another year will increase GDP by a whole 1%?
Would extending the payroll tax holiday for 2012 really will have differing effects on economic growth?
Also, according to this chart from Ezra Klein
I don't necessarily disagree with you. A lot goes into economic growth besides payroll tax rates. But you really need to get better sources.
Actually, I suspect that suspending the employers' part of the payroll tax would do more to stimulate hiring than the employee part.
Not likely to fly politically though.
I would actually disagree with that statement. The reason employers are not hiring is because of lack of demand, not lack of funds. http://cnnmon.ie/rdyTuE
If Congress were to cut the employer's portion of the payroll tax they would either save the money or speed up business decisions they were going to make anyway(like hiring an employee) to take advantage of the tax break. http://eng.am/zVZZPI
I'm not sure what is wrong with using Ezra Klein as source, but it shouldn't matter since the numbers were put together by The Council of Foreign Relations and not Klein. http://on.cfr.org/zh7ePk
If you're relying on the economic "expertise" of Bruce Bartlett, Ezra Klein and mark Zandi (I don't know anything about that other guy),
you're
doing
it
wrong.
