First!
Called the "Truth Team," the new effort will engage Obama supporters online and in person, encouraging them to communicate with undecided voters about the president's record.
Hey, that might be *fun*! But do we have to register?
Isn't that what Reason does?
Truth Team Are Go!
Not quite the same ring as the Thunderbirds.
Truth Team Powers! Activate!
Yeah, that's more fitting.
Hit back twice as hard!
If you inform on your parents, your fee for this summer's Young Pioneers youth indoctrination facility camp is comped!
Truth Team: Obfuscate!
any superhero imperatives that force a majority of readers to pickup a dictionary is doomed to failure.
Wonder Spin powers on!
Bah ha! Wonder Spin Power!
You win the thread and 2 intertoobs.
Shape of: an email reply!
Form of: Wonder Woman's dildo! Oh, oh, my bad sis.
Linda Carter, in the day, yeah Id take that job.
I've been corrected: Wonder Spin powers activated!
Oh, Obama has many college-educated supporters....
so they would have to use the Oxford dictionary, what's your point?
THis probably going to be a double post but wtf.
Can I keep the Brown Shirt?
Oh, Mr President, can we please wear Sam Brown belts? Pretty please?
I love this sub-site. The best part is the capitalization- KeepingHisWord. Between this and the main site title "Truth Team", it strikes me as if it could be some fundie Christian site, not a political site.
Of course, it is the One we are talking about, not just any politician.
If Santorum gets the nomination, I would probably have to vote for Obama. This guy is talking about contraception as an issue in a presidential election.
Shit Sandwich/Giant Douche.
Fail either way.
I want comedy central to replay that episode 24/7 until the election.
You know about SPstudios, right? Douche and turd.
the episode being available for people to view voluntarily is not the same as forcing them to watch it (or change the channel, but if they aren't already switching off from the 12 hours of dailycolbert, then their remotes are probably broken anyway.)
It's only okay when WE produce Team-supporting propaganda.
And risk another Citizens United-style shitstorm from the left?
Brilliant!
We're just looking for an excuse to replicate that "shitstorm".
No, in the redux, it needs to be Shitler vs. Il Douchey.
Does the Catholic Church oppose (artificial) fertility treatments?
I know they oppose IVF, I don't know about hormone treaments like Clomid.
I doubt they oppose them. They oppose IVG because all fertilized eggs arent implanted, IIRC.
No, they don't.
what's worse, there's sum % of old farts who believe the same.
Vote for Obama and get a Supreme Court that will find a right to free contraception in the Constitution.
Or vote for Santorum and get a Supreme Court that will find a federal authority to prohibit birth control because Jesus?
Even the most conservative court appointees don't tend to hallucinate to the degree liberals do. The worst that could possibly happen is that they'd allow states to ban it on 10th Amendment grounds.
Conservative internet posters, on the other hand...
I think hallucinations are pretty even spread among Internet posters of all ideologies.
A Santorum presidency would completely reinvigorate punk rock in ways that nothing else could. A complete renaissance - making it a threat again. I'm looking forward to it.
Excellent point! Perhaps D.O.A. could re-tool this old classic for a Santorum presidency?
Contraception won't matter as we open up shooting wars on nine different fronts. Santorum is the only candidate that really makes me nervous.
Contraception won't matter as we open up shooting wars on nine different fronts.
We'll actually ban it. Gotta keep poppin' out the brave fighting men and women.
Catholic bishops reject birth control compromise.
They're pulling out.
No doubt followed by Santorum.
GUARDS!
The Gelgamek vagina is twelve feet tall and lined with razor-sharp teeth! Do you really expect us to have sex with that??
too bad about those mandates in the upcoming Gelgabama legislation.
Last call you know. Shit happens.
Was there an assassination rumor about North Korea or did I dream that?
Happy un-Birthday!
I always did like moogles. Best Final Fantasy creation.
You heard me, Toonsberries!
You mean Tonberry, kupo?
I prefer the rabbity moogles over the more kewpie doll style.
[::blank stare::]
U.S. stocks rose Monday after the Greek government approved a key austerity package, lifting hopes the nation will qualify for more bailout money and avoid a messy default.
Another zig, another zag.
Lending the Greeks more money. What could possibly go wrong?
John,
There's a whole lot of folks who have run that arbitrage many times over the last year and made a ton of money.
One of these times, there won't be a chair left when the music stops, but until then...
I cannot believe anyone is gullible enough to think that the Greek gov't and people will actually allow these reforms to go through. How many deals has the Greek gov't already broken? Fools!
C'mon Charlie Brown, just take one more run at the football.
+1
The problem with that is that many people in Greece aren't on board.
Actually, they're *swinging* the board.
Why don't they just threaten to destroy the Acropolis? Germany alone would likely agree to fund Greece indefinitely.
Bail this country out, or we'll ruin these ruins!
as with detroit, how would anyone be able to tell the difference?
Detroit's ruins don't serve as the cornerstone of the principal source of revenue for Detroit. And, of course, they aren't venerated in any other way, either.
Detroit's ruins don't serve as the cornerstone of the principal source of revenue for Detroit
So, they can't even do ruins right. Typical.
I know, can you believe it?
Yes.
You'd think with happy Detroit-based movies like Robocop and The Crow that Detroit would be, well, some kind of rock city.
well, Robocop did have a happy ending at least.
If we redo The Road Warrior, it'll be set in Detroit. Which survives, because no one bothers nuking it.
It is. How else would you refer to a city made mostly of rock houses?
Wow, Kiss was very prescient, huh?
Didn't the Axis already shell a bunch of Greek ruins in WWI?
I bet 4 out of 5 govt workers are okay with it. The 1 out of 5 soon-to-be-unemployed govt workers not so much.
And the police union has threatened (empty, no doubt) to arrest the IMF and EU technocrats as scapegoats for taking Greece's sovereignty.
I can't decide who I want to lose more -- the asshole technocrats who are using the crisis to undermine democracy in Greece (as they have done in so many places in Europe), or the idiot socialists who fucked their nation up so badly that the technocrats could get away with it, and still yet refuse to accept responsibility for the state of their nation.
Best case scenario: Greek firebombers murder the local technocrats and commit terrorist bombings against quite a few more; the EU turns Greece into a penal colony in response; and all nascent firebomber movements end in mass deportation to Greece, including the Occupy movement whenever CAP finally goads them into violence. No punishment except being forced to live among and rely on radical leftists for the rest of your life, which is more than fitting.
what happens when you lose control of ur money...amerio anyone?
Beware Greeks bearing austerity promises.
I got a virus from opening the Word doc they sent.
Was it at least a delicious virus made with seasoned lamb?
a delicious virus made with seasoned lamb trojaned horse.
Boooooooooooooo
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyn.....mmentsArea
Seriously, tha fuck?
For a site called "Science Blogs"...
There's very little science there. It's mostly either hyper-ideological screeds where you wonder how the author manages to perceive *any* actual reality, or links to people who do actual science along the lines of "Hey, look at this cool thing some other person with a real science career is doing!"
The site wanted to have a scientist who worked for a corporation do a blog on the research he was doing, and, OMG, the waily waily and gnashing of teeth from the Leftorium was deafening.
But, you know, they have Science Degrees, and therefore know better about everything single thing in the world.
3rd rate scientist at 4th rate school. No surprise.
Libertarians are the new witches, and for PZ Myers is will always be 1692.
1690 or 1960 depending on the issue.
That's the "reality based" community for you.
He's a professor at a public university. They're mostly a pack of rabid progressives who think that trying the same crap over and over and expecting a different result isn't insane because they have, like, science degrees, or something.
This is also the guy whose big claim to rhetorical fame is nailing a Eucharist cracker to a wall. Look out! We got a badass over there!
The worst sort of atheists... the kind that worship the God that is The State.
There are some people who really do live that old axiom about the danger of people not believing in religion is not that they won't believe in something but that they will believe in anything. This guy is pretty much a living example of that.
"But the State is elected by the People! It's what the people want! Are you against democracy??"
What astounds me is that otherwise educated people would be so blissfully unaware at how much the people who founded this country HATED government. Deep visceral hate. Much more so than someone like me, whom it merely annoys.
Indeed, veemee. They think the Constitution was a set of rules for how the Federal government should right all wrongs and make us all happy. Since we now have a more modern view of "wrong" and "happy," of course the Constitution must be reinterpreted to accommodate that.
"Are you against democracy??"
Yes.
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and
deserve to get it good and hard.
The people can have their Democracy. Give me a Republic.
Doesn't that make them Kratheists?
It takes a lot of guts to take on defenseless wafer.
I would love to see him piss on a Koran sometimes, since he is so concerned about people believing in superstitions.
Fapfapfapfap....
Exactly. Besides, been there, done that, and all.
This is also the guy whose big claim to rhetorical fame is nailing a Eucharist cracker to a wall.
Summon me when he nails jello.
Bah! Simple with the jigglers modification to the recipe.
Now folding soup, that's the challenge!
Ha! Try tying Santorum!
Associate Professor = Moron. We see it over and over and over on links here.
I was going to go with "Where's Morris?" (university location) but for all I know it could be the shining star of the U of M system.
I never understand why so many people assume that STEM profs don't stew in the liberal lunacy on college campuses just like the rest of them. Most of the scientists I have known had some pretty crazy ideas about things outside of their field.
The engineering professors I had didn't bring up political beliefs at all (with the exception of 2 who were big global warming activists).
They don't in class. But get them away from class and know their personal views. That is what I am talking about.
Right, but I'm saying I think that's why people assume they aren't soaking in the "liberal lunacy". The other professors are bringing it into the classroom, but not the STEM profs, so it's out of sight.
If its a STEM only school, where is the pot to stew in?
I'm sure there's still plenty of pot at STEM only schools.
I never understand why so many people assume that STEM profs don't stew in the liberal lunacy on college campuses just like the rest of them.
Because we were STEM majors and have practical experience or because we've seen any of the thousands of polls.
One would think science-minded people would be more hospitable to libertarianism, or at least fractions thereof.
I think they'd lean more towards a perfect technocracy ruled by an artificial intelligence.
I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion.
You may be a Latina, madame, but you have yet to be wise.
One would think science-minded people would be more hospitable to libertarianism, or at least fractions thereof.
Science-minded people think that every problem can be "solved" or "figured out."
It's a wonder they're not *all* progressives.
I was talking about rationality and logic. Liberals have neither.
He gets stupider by the day. A few years ago I enjoyed his attacks on Creationists. Now he's worthless.
From the comments, they appear to conflate objectivism and libertarianism.
One commenter does point out that taking other people's property with the threat of violence is not at all libertarian. His point is not well-taken. Or probably even understood.
From the comments, they appear to conflate objectivism and libertarianism.
In my discussions with lefties, this is very common.
I just want to know why PZ Myers hates libertarians so much.
Duh, a threat to socialism.
To be fair, Richard Dawkins told a femo-atheist to shut her cunt about what she perceived to be sexism, which was actually just a harmless attempt by a guy at asking a girl back to his room.
Unfortunately, it cost him some credibility within the group. But, still, kudos to him.
In a different time and place, PZ Myers would have been enthusiastically torturing conversos for god. I don't know why you people persist in reading him.
Exactly. I stopped about a year ago.
I tried to read him exactly once.
It could be that he's sucked for a long time. I only read his evolution/secular humanism stuff initially. I only started noticing his political shite via H&R.
I don't. I don't even click the links. I'll read the Jezebel links but I don't even touch PZ.
As it turns out, Ed is a socialist. He uses the knife to hold the other four at bay, while he divvies up slices among them based on who promises to put him permanently in charge. He keeps the biggest slice for himself, of course.
He's probably got a cannibalism fetish (don't even fucking try to google that shit, rule 34 and all).
Someone should check his basement. Someone armed, I mean.
Biofuels still not profitable. Must have left my surprised face at my old job.
Its profitable to those people who are getting subsidized.
Bingo. These assholes know exactly how to pay themselves a hefty salary and bonus while bleeding the company dry and never producing anything of value.
Years ago I decided against starting up a biofuels company because economically they are a fool's game at this point in history. The only way anyone can make money on them is with hughe government subsidies. What a sucker I am. Sticking to principles over pocketbook.
Obama campaign has a "truth squad," and you can be part of it!
This is a search and rescue op, right?
It's been missing for years from the White House, so it's probably time we got on the stick.
Nope, it's S&D. There's still some left in the world.
Damn. That's better than mine.

Ontario Teacher's Union calls for classroom wifi ban for health reasons. I assume the teachers fear the students will riot when they find out how much bullshit they're being fed.

Why do you have a problem with this?
Just set up re-education camps and be done with it. Why the eff do they keep this up? Surrogate interventionists? Has this leftist staple of reporting on detractors and trying to force the narrative yet worked for the Obama Administration?
National groups like the National Education Association and the Service Employees International Union have also signed on as partners in the effort.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!
This is just a re-branding of the hopenstasi.
Is there anything the germans don't have a perfectly styled word for?
You got it FoE. This is 'Attack Watch!' recycled with a dose of re-education camp added in.
They want to engage people directly and online....my guess is they will filter out anyone who questions their propagandist narrative even slightly. I was thinking it could be fun to join in and try to fuck them, but....alas, they would spot me coming a mile away.
They've still got AttackWatch, and they added something about KeepingHisWord not long ago. Those have been good for lulz, and I doubt those wells are dry quite yet.
when the campaign launched AttackWatch.com last fall, conservatives largely lampooned it.
He also had Fight The Smears. What a machine!
Presumably they'll resurrect that if he has to run against Santorum.
I wish I was a super hacker, just so I could replace KeepingHisWord with a blank white page.
Supporting the lesser of evils, the bread and butter of U.S. foreign policy makers.
Nothing puzzling at all. We cleared the way for radical Islamist takeovers in two countries, why not a third?
Wahabbists and Ba'athists don't mix well?
Obama keeps hearing this word, "truth", and he likes the sound of it. That's why he attaches it to every new propaganda campaign. Too bad he's not acquainted with the concept itself.
Will this "Truth Team" have matching outfits?
In brown or black
http://rexcurry.net/edward-bel.....-youth.jpg
You know who else had a "Truth Team" with matching outfits?
The Green Lantern Corps?
You know, we could use a Green Lantern or two around here. To straighten us out.

It doesn't seem to fit the meter of The Internationale. What's the tune?
Try this one.
Racist!
"Who's famous slogan is Yes we can?"
Of course the answer is Bob the Builder.
My daughter has watched that a few times. I often hear the theme as Zod the Builder.
KNEEL before Zod!
I hear it in Terence Stamp's Zod voice, too. Very weird.
ONE before Zod!
TWO before Zod!
THREE before Zod!
The Supreme Court?
I was hoping they work the phrase "rapid response" into the description, so I can picture the Ghostbusters' ambulance barreling down the street on its way to fixing someone's thinking.
but, why the Ghostbusters?
Hmmm.... trying to doom us with the most innocuous things they can think of?
reasoning accepted.
For some reason, any time I hear the term "rapid response" I think of the Ghostbusters ambulance. That's what comes into my mind. I wasn't expecting the Obama campaign to use it. But if they would use it, the reason why seems valid. And reworking that catchy song I think would be easy.
For some reason, any time I hear the term "rapid response" I think of the Ghostbusters ambulance.
I never noticed them slackingoff when a call came in, so, yeah.
(I mean, c'mon, they had a firepole. If that doesn't scream Rapid, I don't know what does.)
What is wrong with our country?
What is wrong with our country?
There's a 2000 comment thread easy:)
Nah. I'll do it all in seven words:
that kind of pizza I don't like.
Well, let's start with the crappy beer.
???
I rarely have any crappy beer. Some is only meh, but crappy is very rare.
Oh wait, you mean you drink beer from those foreign megacorps? Thats insanity.
What? We may actually be the best beer country in the world now (or close to the top, anyway). The microbrewery revolution was no joke.
Yep. I think we are #1, but arguments can be made (Belgium probably wins per capita).
Of course, the best of the belgian beers are primarily sold in the US. We have created a boom in a number of styles that were all but dead in Belgium.
May? What's with the weasel words?
It's not our fault that Europeans are too dumb to buy the good stuff we make. If all we bought was their crappy stuff we wouldn't appreciate Belgian ales or German lagers either.
We buy a lot of their crappy stuff too. Like Stella and Becks.
It's "may" because I don't hold myself out as a brewing expert.
Anyone a fan of Shocktop Raspberry Weiss or Magic Hat #9? (Related note - robc, check is in the mail.
Danke. It will go to good use. I will post a picture.
Should I tebow in the liquor store?
Up to you, although I'd put the 6-pack on the counter before doing so.
Magic Hat #9
One of the most honest beers: "Not quite a pale ale." Yep, thats what it is. It isnt bad, but it bores me.
IPAs are a little too bitter for me. I like their #9 b/c it has a bit of the sharpness, along with a fruity aftertaste.
I agree on both counts. I haven't really been able to get into the real hoppy beers. I do like the MH9 as well. Get it on tap at one of of my spots.
I like road dog, thirsty dog, great lakes, Holland brewery, among others.
I spent many a college weekend enjoying the unlimited free samples at the Magic Hat "Artifactory" which leads me to my opinion on #9: I don't hate it, but I'm angry at it for being the only Magic Hat available outside of Vermont when it is clearly inferior to their other brews.
I don't hold myself out as a brewing expert.
I dont either, but more so. And "may" is still a good choice, because the criteria isnt obvious. Germany and Enlgand have a hell of a lot going for them. And Belgium does some amazing stuff.
And the US is behind them in the styles they specialize in. But being 2nd in german beers and 2nd in british beers and 2nd in belgium beers? That has a lot of value. Plus we kick ass at certain American sytles.
I feel that there's something important to learn about the U.S. going from shitty to the top in such a short period of time.
~35 years since Carter made it possible. Europe (especially continental) has mostly lost its homebrewing culture.
Germany lost it centuries ago.
Like with anything, most homebrewers suck, but that tail of the distribution holds genius.
Good German beer: Erdinger, DAB
Spate optimizers pretty good.
All you people who like different music / movies / TV / sports / sports teams from me.
At least we get a breather from the "Romney Tops Santorum" headlines for a little while.
"Crappy Beer Tops Santorum"
Nothing a debt catastrophe or 3rd world war can't fix.
why be so selective? they're two great tastes that taste great together!
Less Filling!
the breakdown of food production and distribution will have that effect.
I wonder if Tony is going to join the Truth Team. He could then come here and engage us personally and tell us what the truth is.
encouraging them to communicate with undecided voters about the president's record.
Emphasis added.
I think we count as undecided because we don't plan to vote R or D. That means we haven't decided in the eyes of the media.
Oh, I've decided.
If I was a paranoid muthafucker, I would say that the Obama campaign intentionally set up the contraceptive issue haphazardly in the hopes it would draw a kunfunkle so that would be one of the more dominant issues instead of something more substantial. Like say, ANYTHING FUCKING ELSE.
This is the fucking Birther nonsense all over again.
What you did there.
I demand to see the unopened condom that failed to prevent obama's birth.
It's still in my wallet dude.
You would try to fuck a chick named Stanley.
Dude I was drank. I thought she said slam me.
I dunno 4chan, forcing people to act against their conscience seems a bit like a big deal to me. But thats just me.
Like I said the other day - "It's anything but the economy, stupid."
The Obama administration and their water carrers in the media have effectively framed this as a c church vs. contraceptives issue and has been very accapeting of the premise that the government should be dictating coverage levels to anyone. How this affects religious organizations is only the most obvious and easily explained way that the mandate runs afoul of liberty.
Good news for North Korean troops. It sounds like they'll be eating their Wheaties soon.
So they can kill even more Syrian Christians.
We'll probably sell Syria nuke capable jet fighters like we did our great terrorism ally Pakistan.

Genre-ist!
not a Life and Times of Tim fan, i take it...
Years ago, I got yelled at for saying "well, I figger" instead of "figure".
Got yelled at by a pasty-white liberal, by the way. Because it *sounded* racist.
Walked up to a black dude, said the same thing... not even a flinch.
goddamn dirty figgers and their fruit growing ways! *shaken fist*

That was horrible. Please don't do that again.
Saw Waiting for "Superman" this weekend. Fantastic (and depressing) documentary. Can't believe it was made by the same guy who made that worthless drivel, An Inconvenient Truth.
You should also watch The Cartel
Also, The Lottery. (The 2010 doc, not a film on the Shirley Jackson story). They are all equally infuriating.
He also made a documentary about how awesome public school teachers are around the same time. Apparently he had kids and decided they were to good for the local public schools. A cynic might have another explanation.

Seems like a good way to weed out the lazy workers.
I sort of wonder if Obama is gearing up for his post presidential life. He's young, and I bet a retirement of speaking gigs at Women's Colleges, banging the fem gen majors who show up to support him for his courageous decision to force the mean old Catholic church to provide birth control sounds pretty damn good right now.
The only thing to do is figure out how to make some money off of Obama's post presidency. Someone will.
Obama himself is obviously going to make a fortune.
Can't wait for his ghost-written memoirs that he wrote by himself.
And it will be just fine with Team Blue when Obama makes millions from speaking fees... but it's still evil for Romney to make a few hundred thousand bucks from HIS speaking fees.
Typical.
Women's colleges? You must be thinking of some other president. Men's colleges would be more likely.
I just read an analysis of delegate distribution that presents the case that a brokered convention is now the most likely outcome. Basically, Mitt has to start running away with things fast to have any shot at getting the needed amount of delegates. Is there any indication this is about to happen?
What we're looking at is a potential Santorum VP pick (by necessity) and a landslide loss of 1964 proportions.
The VP pick doesn't count for much when it comes to the actual election.
unimportant
Nevertheless. Romney has lost his electability edge, and has only won by money bombing. He can only rack up a winning number of delegates (even if he got all uncommitted superdelegates) by convention if he gets large majorities in many non-winner-takes-all contests to come. That is, he has to run away with the nomination soon. Otherwise it's a brokered convention, and one candidate or another who the American people simply won't prefer to Obama.
I'll just defer to the Shit Sandwich/Giant Douche meme elsewhere on this thread.
Anybody running against Obama is electable. Anybody.
"Carter was leading in the polls, right up until people started to vote."
That's the good news, Tony.
The BAD news is, under that scenario, we get four more years of your Team's hood ornament ruining the country.
Shit Sandwich/Giant Douche, and either label works for either Team candidate.
Not if Santorum gets the nom. Then it should be obvious who is whom.
Nope... either label applies to Santorum, as well.
I know, you were going for the shit/Santorum wordplay, but seriously... the man IS a giant douche, and a giant shit sandwich - simultaneously.
Voting for Santorum will be called felching from this point forward.
What would be a good analogue to "felching", to describe "voting for Obama"?
I guess it depends on what body part/sexual byproduct is named Obama.
So Santorum is tied with Romney for awhile. As much as everyone claims to dislike Congress, you would think Santorum and Gingrich would be non-starters.
No no, it's the other guys!
I spend more money per month on paper towels than the average woman of child-rearing age spends on birth control pills. So given these things cost upwards of $25 per month (as low as $4 and as high as $50), just on the economics alone I can see why it is so important insurance companies are required by law to cover them.
Just thinking out loud here, but maybe the administration can call their "Truth Team" the "Ministry of Truth."
You wouldn't believe how many copies of Orwell's instruction manual we have in My Office.
Ungood crimethink. However, they might want to think about establishing a Plenty Team and a Love Team.
How many poor college girls rot away in catholic prisons because the authorities found their birth control? I would welcome theocracy right now.
I think I've found this writer's biggest pet peeve:
On Reddit, the entire universe is seen from the dementedly rational perspective of the white male geeks
Nothing pisses feminists off more than people being rational.

At the right (wrong?) moment, a peanut-butter sandwich would piss off a feminist.

Jesus, And to think I thought communism was doomed in this country back in the 90s.
According to my radio, 1 in 8 struggle with hunger in this country. They must be the poor who are starving and struggling. I would help them out, but I cant find them. You have to look hard around here just to find a skinny person, much less a starving one.
We wept when the Berlin Wall fell... but we'll build another one, by Gaia!
Section 7 of Washington state's SSM law provides that religious organizations (and presumably secular orgs too) which charge money to hold marriages on their premises must open up their premises to same-sex ceremonies:

Soft on crime: Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor appears on Sesame Street and slaps Goldilocks on the wrist:
"So "Sesame Street," in classic left-wing fashion, pays no attention to property rights. Also, consider the gender dimension of this problem. If a male had intruded into the home of a female, I don't think "Sesame Street" would focus on how nice it would be if the 2 could now become friends."

The Brothers Grimm took a harder line on fairy-tale crime.
The original [Goldilocks] tale (which actually only dates to 1837) has two possible variations. In the first, the bears find Goldilocks and rip her apart and eat her. In the second, Goldilocks is actually an old hag who (like the sanitized version) jumps out of a window when the bears wake her up. The story ends by telling us that she either broke her neck in the fall, or was arrested for vagrancy and sent to the "House of Correction".

Jesus. I didn't realize that our incentive structure was this fucked up.

Please tell me there's a mistake here I've missed. Otherwise we're gonna be looking at UK levels of citizens "on the dole" in a single generation.
While no fan of the welfare state am I, I would say that this represents the potential for economic benefit. It requires that you actively receive benefits from Medicaid and CHIP and pay for child care as opposed to doing it yourself. While it's likely these folks are taking maximum advantage of their government provided benefits, it's not necessarily the case.
At some point in my life, I'm sure I could have qualified for some of these benefits, but I was too proud to do so, and too focused on improving my situation to spend the time. If you are focused on maximizing your benefit from government sources, it's clear you can live a pretty good life with little effort, on the backs of your more productive fellow citizens.
BTW, when are people going to start demanding government assistance to buy firearms? I mean, self defense is a right, right? And rights are things the government provides, right? And if you can't pay for them, you get the government to buy them for you, right?
db FTW!
Shit, when my old man was laid off, my mom had to drag him to the car just to get him to go to the unemployment office. We burned through most of our savings until that happened.
But take welfare? My dad would've shit himself inside-out first.
