It's one thing to not make a metal album. But it's an entirely different thing for a band that has made metal albums for the last 20 years suddenly cast aside anything that even remotely resembles metal.

I think there's a deceptive complexity to "Heritage" that makes it intensely fascinating in its own way.

This album is Opeth's "Signals" (Rush). Jarring at first, but rich, fascinating and rewarding as time goes on.

That's a decent comparison. There certainly is a hell of a lot of raw musicality in Heritage.

When I started listening to Rush, I began with Grace Under Pressure and Signals, so what would be jarring to a chronological listener of the band is the baseline for me.

Similarly, Heritage is one of two Opeth albums I purchased after hearing of them on H&R and so it's my early experience of the band.

First of all, KISS added two letters, which makes it rather noticeably different. Second, the logo ran afoul of the German anti-Nazi symbology laws, so citing them as a defense isn't exactly doing much for your case.

The stylized runic "SS" - by itself - has acquired an enduring historical association. It's not possible to use it without associating yourself with the Schutzstaffel, even if you didn't mean to. It's not a symbol that will be redeemed in our lifetimes, if ever.

The swastika gets a slight pass because of its ancient Hindu and Buddhist origins, but try using it outside of those contexts and you're back in Nazi-land. This is true even if you make the correct point that the Nazi version is backward.

Symbols have meanings outside what the users intend sometimes. If you don't respect that fact you wind up sounding like Randall explaining his use of "porch monkey."

Was at my local cigar lounge the other night and enjoyed Ola Dubh 16. I've never been a huge whiskey fan, but I always liked some of the radiant flavors.
