Orwellian Irony in the Extreme Double-Plus-Good Update: It's a fake!
Picture of the the day, courtesy the Twitter feeds of Libby Jacobson, Soren Dayton, and Radley Balko.
Update!: So it turns out the picture above is a photoshopped image. For a shot of the building's front, go here and here for an explanation.
And here's a 2007 story from the Daily Mail about the proliferation of closed-circuit TV cameras (CCTV) in Orwell's old neighborhood.

I don't think anon-bot rolls that way.
lily replying to anon-bot!
Hah. Didn't they do an experiment recently where they had 2 AI's talk to each other?
Anon Bot, when was the last time you contemplated the curve of your lover's neck? Or reminisced about the smell of the little bakery you found in Paris? Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you had stayed in Austin, and accepted the department head position?
Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you had stayed in Austin, and accepted the department head position?
But the things he was asked to do in exchange for that position . . . Sure, that salary would've bought all the mouthwash in the world, but nothing would've erased the memory of it.
Ewwwwww.
What happened to first? His bot posts were always witty and upbeat. His links always worked producing a most favorable pornbot experience. I miss him.
Nikola has come to us fresh from her home in the Czech Republic. When we say fresh, that's exactly what we mean.
She is as refreshing as a light breeze at dawn. 18 year old Nikola has a fragile charm. She manages to be both mysterious and na?ve at the same time. This is a rare quality. Her photo assignments with us are the first major ones she has undertaken. Until now she has concentrated on her studies at a business academy. Very recently that she has come to see that her beauty is as much of an asset as her intelligence. Gradually she is becoming aware of how powerful her sexual aura is. She is looking forward to exploring it.
Nikola is like a new-born colt. Awkward and stumbling at first, it quickly becomes a graceful and powerful creature that is full of passion. Nikola will be transformed. We can watch the amazing process unfold.

I'm sorry but Reason has developed a more advanced spam filter that blocks out posts with links in them and I didn't want to be a dick and post spam without a link. However, if it really matters that much to you here's one for old time's sake.

YOU ROCK pornbot!
DUH DUN DUN!
I believe you meant to credit Libby Jacobson.
Look, you can't expect a libertarian magazine to spell a woman's name correctly; it was hard enough for to give a FEMUL at hat tip, and the good news is not one called her a cunt
-yet
Dammit. He only lived to be 47? Now I feel even worthlesser.
So, is Orwell laughing his ass off or spinning in his grave?
Why can't it be both?
SIMGLMAO!
He's screaming at us "You all are a bunch of fucking pussies!!!!!" from the afterlife... Or whatever it is English people say that is equivalent.
Or as my friend puts it, the universe is more full of irony than dark matter.
What's the old saying? The only thing more common than hydrogen is stupidity.
Now I'm very sad.
On the bright side, that camera is there for YOUR protection.
Why is the sign way up there? He only lived in that one room or something? Its probably one of the "other" places, like naming a street after Martin Luther King, Jr. because he stopped by that one time.
It's kind of like a Bok or Payne cartoon, isn't it? More questions than anything.
Also - MOAR LABELS!
Don't you otherize me!
So the camera can get a clean angle on the face of any anarchist loving, potential terrorist who might look.
Just wait until attach laser guns to those things.
They're already equipped with SCORPION STARE for CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN. Or was it for AZORIAN BLUE HADES? Anybody remember?
Epi, you magnificant BASTARD! Does it really matter? Really?
Of course it matters!
The End of the World as We Know It: CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN. In essence, billions upon billions of humans doing what we do- thinking, imagining, calculating- is very bad for reality. Sufficient levels of belief in an entity, or calculations related to an entity, can summon it from one of the countless parallel (and... not so parallel...) universes where an iteration of it exists. In the best of times, the ability to do so is generally offset by the difficulty. However, a roughly 70-year period is coming very soon- and probably has already begun- during which... well, during which the stars are right. CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN is predicted to be bad enough that an all-out nuclear war was considered, in order to reduce the population and thus the chances of summoning something big and hungry. However, the sheer number of deaths would almost certainly attract equally unpleasant creatures- and that's assuming that nobody dedicates the deaths to their favorite gibbering horror.
Any word on the next Laundry novel?
WAIT WAIT WAIT I just came up with the best idea.
Laundry MMPORPG.
There, now if anyone does it they owe me $1M.
Here you go.
I had never heard of that series before. Now I hate you.
Charles Stross is very good, Jimbo. Try him.
*squee*
(That was in response to Epi, not Gojira.
Although I also squee at your hate, which nourishes my spirit.)
This year we get the next Laundry novel, and then next year the sequel to Saturn's Children. I am pleased.
Yeah that's why I hate you; it's another fucking series that looks right up my alley that now I'm going to have to start, resulting in even less time to re-read my Beverly Cleary collection.
Gojira, they're fun and relatively short, so you can get back to Superfudge soon. Don't skip the novelettes.
Trespassers:
They have a paper and dice game already. But holy shit, I would be come a non-bathing, catheter-wearing shut-in if they came out with a Laundry MMORPG
Yeah, I accidentally discovered that fact today. Apparently it's based on CoC rules... Duh.
I am not oppressed by the presence of CCTV cameras. One has no right not to be looked at in public. People surrender their privacy, willingly, when they open a Facebook or Twitter account. Are Facebook and Twitter "Orwellian"?
A right is a recognized freedom. I wish that Americans would recognize more people's rights and not trust the ruling class to make those decisions for them.
"One has no right not to be looked at in public."
Because you said so?
No.
Do you think you have a right not to be looked at in public?
I'd like to see you try to prove that premise.
I don't recall having advanced a position. You, however, implicitly state that you do have a right not to be looked at in private, by way of explicitly claiming the opposite right in the public case. I was only curious if you have any rationale for this, which goes beyond "because I said so."
People have a choice to open a Facebook or Twitter account.
Correct. And other people have a right to look at you in public.
Correct. And other people have a right to look at you in public.
Incorrect.
Unless you get cited for loitering for standing on a public sidewalk talking to your friends.
"One has no right not to be looked at in public. "
But should the government have the authority to look at everyone, all the time, in public?
Don't get me wrong -- I'm sympathetic to Brin's view that increasing sousveillance is more useful than attacking surveillance. But that's an even harder fight in many ways, and absent a violent revolt, the public has much less ability to take action on whatever information it does acquire about state malfeasance.
If we're going to go with Brin's approach we need to start seeing cameras on government officials too. Ones they can't arrange to have "malfunction" when they want and we must have a solid understanding in law that we do get to surveil them at least as much as they get to surveil us.
Sauce for the goose and all.
But in this case, that's not what we have.
I don't get it.
George Orwell wrote the book 1984 about a future society where everyone was under survillance for "the good of society", thus having a ccw camera on his house is abit hilarious.
I'd bet, even though Orwell is long-dead, he's still shitting himself over how his ficticious novel has become a guidebook for public policy.
I'm glad you said it! If he had just kept it all to himself those empty head statists wouldn't have had a plan to follow!
I wonder how many people here think Animal Farm is anti-socialist. I'd bet at least 90%.
WTF do YOU think
Irony: DHS does get it and Kerboros doesn't. Think about it, K.
Everyone was under surveillance in every corner of their homes via a viewscreen that would also issue commands to them.
So, somewhat different from a camera viewing a public space.
Yup. Not that many "libertarians" are capable of discerning the difference.
Yes, cameras are MUCH less intrusive. Thanks for pointing that out.
Not sure if sarcastic or trolling.
Sacrcastic
Or sarcastic.
And now that it's so easy to accept cameras in public spaces, it's much easier pushing them into private spaces.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab.....ate-homes/
From your link:
Which is a long way of saying "we swallowed a bunch of bullshit hysteria and printed it anyway".
One of the dangers of blurring the distinction between public space and private space, as many so-called "privacy advocates" love to do, is that when the push to expand surveillance does come it will mean less resistance since "it's all the same anyway".
qv "libertarians" refusing to vote because Romney is just as bad as Obama.

You got trolled. His handle was Department of Homeland Security, aka DHS.

How to deal with Big Brother.
If only our future could be so sitcom-y.
that was awe-tastic
really.
Questionable picture, since his real name was Eric Blair and I'd imagine that's the name they'd put on his home.
Funny, anyway.
This has actually happened before, in Spain.

Orwell sure got around, didn't he?
If this is Limetree Island, it's not at all surprising anymore. That realm is a lost cause.

It's photoshopped. This photo made it to the front page of reddit today. At the top of the comments was another party pooper who posted this undoctored photo of the building: http://knowledgeoflondon.com/images/orwellw11.jpg. Sorry, guys.
sorry, here's a working link: http://knowledgeoflondon.com/images/orwellw11.jpg
Though with all of the cameras they have there, it might be worth checking out the angles where Orwell really did live. Bet there's a camera somewhere near by.
That's right, dude. Don't let the point of this post being total bullshit get in the way of spreading hysteria.
What hysteria? What the hell are you talking about?
Pwnd again! Stupid reason.com!
That's because the camera is inside the home.
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/.....ghbours.do
And Paul graces us with another misleading link intro. Not sure if he just isn't reading the content at the links or figures no one will call him on the incongruence.
The cameras are installed at the request of the owners of the property they're installed in. Most of whom have been victims of vandalism and such.
But, still! Cameras! In homes!
Fake. It is a photoshop from 2008.
Right, because cameras in public places = viewscreens.
Boy, are our faces red!
Hey Reason, I like posting y'all's stuff on my Facebook page, but the preview shows the entire URL. Do you think y'all could change that so that the headline and maybe a picture shows up instead?
I knew it was photoshopped when I saw a half-face in the texture of the colored reflection on the window.
It's a streetlight.
IT'S A COOOOOKBOOOOOOOOK!!!!!1!!!1!
It's a g-g-g-g-g-ghost!
Oh wait. No, it's just a regular ghost.
So, Gillespie has to know by now that this image is a fake.
Yet, hours later, there is no correction/update/apology.
one note tune
Well, actually 3 notes:
1. "Ya'll Libertarians is cray-zay"
2. "by the way, vote for my guy, NotObama"
3. "I demand accountability from Reason.com. Raaaagghh!!!"
If you guys didn't keep falling prey to the same fallacies, I wouldn't keep correcting you with the same correction.
I think it's called "confirmation bias."

There is no camera on that block on Portabello Rd. There has never been a camera on that block of Portabello Rd. Anyone who says different is a spy from EastAsia.
That does not change the story that the image is photoshopped. A lot of Orwell's ideas have been fully implemented these days. Even a couple more.
