CATO Responds to SOTU!

|

Here's the official video response from the Cato Institute to last night's State of the Union address by President Obama. It's an interesting, nearly point-by-point takedown of every major section of the speech, from foreign policy to the economy to education.

  1. obama obviously caved to the powerful “give-everyone-a-free-pony” lobby from the northeast

    1. Vermin Supreme… I am a meme!

  2. Based on the number of mindless Obama-bot posts I see on my facebook pages where they tout his list of supposed “accomplshments” I don’t think the GOP has a shot in hell to beat him, despite his complete clusterfuck of a presidency.

The folks who support him are worse than anything I’ve ever seen from the right in terms of blind devotion. It doesn’t matter who hypocritically awful his SOTU address was because no one in the media is calling him out for lying whatsoever.

Like the bit about “saving the auto industry”, which is one of the biggest lines of bullshit this guy has ever spewed forth, and considering his legacy that’s saying something.

We’re going to have to burn the village to the ground to save it. Other than a full on 1970’s style depression complete with 25% inflation and gas lines happening in the next eight months, I don’t see what’s going to stop him. Certainly no one in the GOP gives me any hope.

    1. even worse than the ron paul people?

      1. A thousand times worse than the RP crowd.

The RP crowd may be fanatic, but they don’t appear as blindly devoted. I think that crowd would be better served supporting Gary Johnson, but that’s only because the RP crowd seems more concerned about principles and not hero worship.

      2. I would hope that Ron Paul people would disavow him if he engaged in Endless War(tm), bailouts, assasinations of American citizens, prolonged drone attacks and New Dealesque policies despite the overwhelming evidence they were failing.

        1. If President Paul didn’t have Gitmo closed and free drugs in the hands of every infant in the country by the Thursday after his inauguration, we would move on to someone more dedicated to the cause.

          1. Why would have to wait until Thursday?

            1. Poor guy is going to need a nap after all the campaigning he’s done.

      3. At least my friends that follow Paul blindly want to expand freedom for the most part. I can’t say the same for the one’s giving Obama standing ovations in their living rooms.

    2. I don’t think the GOP has a shot in hell to beat him, despite his complete clusterfuck of a presidency

Yep. it’s too late. Americans are growing more entitled, and now we’re getting that Euro attitude: gimme gimme gimme.

If you keep pumping corn down the goose’s throat, he’ll line up eagerly for more every day.

      1. Yep. it’s too late. Americans are growing more entitled, and now we’re getting that Euro attitude: gimme gimme gimme.

Getting…getting?!! Dude, it’s been done got.

    3. Based on the number of mindless Obama-bot posts I see on my facebook pages where they tout his list of supposed “accomplshments” I don’t think the GOP has a shot in hell to beat him, despite his complete clusterfuck of a presidency.

You might want to consider the possibility that the people who post comments on your FuckBuddy pages are not a representative cross sample of the voters in the handful of swing states that will determine the presidential election.

“How could Bush have gotten elected? NOBODY I know voted for him?”

      1. You might want to consider the possibility that the people who post comments on your FuckBuddy pages are not a representative cross sample of the voters in the handful of swing states that will determine the presidential election.

I’m not considering it, I’m praying for it! Even though what you’re saying is true, and I agree that my anecdotal example is by no means statistically relevant, what I’m amazed by is the complete and total brain washing that has occurred amongst his supporters that I usually consider to be reasonably bright individuals. It’s kinda scary, actually.

        “Fuckbuddy pages”, I like that.

    4. Honestly, as much as every libertarian blog has become the 24-Hour-a-Day NObama Channel, it’s hard for me to give a shit. Will we be that much more free under Mittens or the Newter?

      Change is local.

Also, I remember the right-wing bullshit being pretty damned thick when W was around.

      1. the 24-Hour-a-Day NObama Channel

Well, he has been president for a while now.

Will we be that much more free under Mittens or the Newter?

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. ”

        ~C.S. Lewis

I remember the right-wing bullshit being pretty damned thick when W was around.

And I’m pretty sure if you take the time to check the Reason archives you’ll find that there were more than enough posts slamming GW for his policies too.

      2. Will we be that much more free under Mittens or the Newter?

        No. Welcome to libertarianism!

        1. Heh. Glad I could make it.

I began reading up on libertarianism shortly after pulling the elephant lever in 2000. What’s so frustrating about all this is that I vividly recall thinking things would pick up with Little Boots out of office. We saw how that turned out. This time, I just can’t get that excited about simply putting the other assholes back in charge.

          1. I would not describe the reason commentariat as excited about the proposition of putting a Republicrat in charge. More of a moreseness I would guess.

The only excitement I detect in the libertosphere is about the fact that thousands of people are really voting for a candidate who espouses freedom, and this message seems to be gaining traction.

As far as I can tell, libertariana is fully prepared to be completely disappointed in whomsoever takes the reins of office in 2013.

            It’s what we do!

  3. The minimum tax for overseas American business is the untold story of the SOTO; unless enterprise can find a loophole, it will be effective

    1. one time i was eating ice cream on the porch and i felt this lick lick lick on my foot and i thought it was just my dog but when i looked down it was this weird guy who did that a lot

  4. SOTU barada nikto!

  5. When will the Democrats rehabilitate Nixon, and build a gigantic monument to him on the Mall?

Wage and price controls, untethered fiat money, vast new regulatory schemes (EPA), cynical obsessive aggrandizement of power to the Executive, what’s not to love?

    1. Crap, I ran across a website yesterday where some liberal was barking about “Even Nixon said such-and-such…”

      I’ll never find it again.

  6. It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas.

Damn straight! Nobody should be given special treatment for using foreign labor…wait. What the fuck did he say?!?

  7. CATO!!!! CANCEL THE ATTACK ORDERS FOR TONIGHT!

  8. The bullshit needs to stop.

  9. Watching the alternating between Obama’s bullshit and the takedowns made it almost tolerable to watch his bullshit in the first place. Even drinking, there’s no way I could’ve handled it live.

    1. Suderman was on fire during the livetweet. Gillespie was getting in a few good overhand rights. Cavanaugh was fairly staid.

  10. Oh, hey! What’s going on with that Tea Party these days?

    http://youtu.be/IUIryCYqHCo

Not the nightmare it could’ve been!
