2012 Election Match Up: Romney, Paul tie Obama

According to a recent CBS News Poll Romney would beat Obama in a hypothetical presidential election match up with 47 percent to Obama's 45 percent. Yet, these numbers are still within the poll's margin of error. Also, the poll found that Ron Paul would garner 45 percent of the vote to Obama's 46 percent, also within the margin of error. Part of Romney and Paul's relative success compared to other GOP candidates like Santorum, Gingrich, and Perry, is that both Romney and Paul receive nearly half the Independent vote. In a hypothetical match up, Paul would garner 47 percent of the Independent vote compared to Obama's 40 percent. Likewise, Romney would receive 45 percent of the Independent vote compared to Obama's 39.

These numbers are crucial to campaign strategy, as Independent voters play a significant role in determining the selection of president. In 2008 Obama won over Independent voters. Today, Obama would lose the Independent vote to Romney and Paul.

Full poll results can be found here.

The CBS news poll was conducted by telephone from January 4-8, 2012 among 1,413 adults nationwide, including 1,247 interviews were conducted with registered voters. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The margin of error for the sample of registered voters could be plus or minus three points. The error for subgroups may be higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

So, I get from this that 90% of Repubs would vote for Charles Manson if he ran and 85%+ would vote for Obama if Jesus ran on the Repub ticket. Looks like it'll be up to the intelligent not-extremists to decide this election (as it always is).

      85%+ of Dems

  2. Montani Semper Liberi   13 years ago

So the ability to wage endless undeclared wars is apparently STILL the #1 issue for 4% of Republican voters despite everything else we are dealing with domestically. Who the hell are these people?

  3. Paul   13 years ago

Obama has lost very little support from mainstream democrats. And even those few who are saying they won't vote for Obama will come around by november.

If Florida weren't a closed primary state I'd happily register as an Independent. Unfortunately, I have to continue to wear the R label just to vote for Ron Paul at the end of this month and cancel out my Father-in-law's vote. Woe, is me.

    1. JD   13 years ago

I'm the opposite. I can't vote for Paul because I'm registered Libertarian and can't stomach registering Republican for anything. I hope Paul wins Florida, but he's on his own.

        Give me a break.

      2. Mensan   13 years ago

I'm not idealogically married to any party affiliation. I've been registered in Florida as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, and No Party Affiliation. I change it whenever necessary so I can vote in closed elections. Regardless of which party I'm actually registered with at any given time, I still call myself an Independent.

Miami Dolphins apparently inept enough to lose the Jeff Fisher sweepstakes to the St. Fucking Louis Rams.

So Gingrich loses to Obama by the largest margin. Gets the least Independent votes, and the second least republican votes (tied with Paul). Why is he a serious candidate again?

    1. Robert   13 years ago

Because people vaguely remember he was a leader of some kind in Congress in the 1990s, while Ron Paul's name isn't particularly attached to any legisl'n that passed.

      1. Paul   13 years ago

while Ron Paul's name isn't particularly attached to any legisl'n that passed.

That's what makes Ron Paul so dreamy.

  7. Joe M   13 years ago

In a hypothetical match up, Paul would garner 47 percent of the Independent vote compared to Obama's 40 percent.

But he's unelectable! Stay on message, damn it.

    yeah ... but,

What if Romney (should he get the Repub's nomination) pick as his VP Rand Paul?
With Rand in the VP spot, you would get the Ron Paul enthusiasm.
Ron and Rand Paul could campaign and bring on the Independent and Libertarian vote.
