Tear Down This Fence
Occupy Oakland turns chain link into art.

The denizens of the Occupy Oakland camp, a West Coast outpost of the Occupy Wall Street protest movement, got evicted from their digs outside City Hall during a violent early morning raid on Tuesday, October 25. That night, a confrontation between protesters and police culminated in the use of flash-bang grenades, rubber bullets, and tear gas by at least one of the 18 different law enforcement agencies present. One protester, Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen, had his skull fractured by a projectile.
The following evening, a more subdued cluster of Occupiers retook the territory of the original encampment with minimal police interference. The Los Angeles Times reported that after a few protesters jumped the fence erected around the grassy area, the crowd was initially divided, with some chanting "go around" while others preferred to "tear it down."
The "tear it down" contingent prevailed. Associated Press footage showed hoodie-wearing protesters stomping the chain-link fence in a furious rage. But by morning the fence had been reconstituted as public art: a house-of-cards-style structure rising above the yellowed grass of Frank Ogawa Plaza.

When do the chickens move in ?
When they come home to roost, duh.
Excellent
FEMA camp?
Prehaps they're doing their internship at Kramerica Industries.
I have to say, this? seems capricious and arbitrary.
Your fly is open.
If the damn thing collapsed and killed somebody, I bet they'd blame "the Man."
I am astonished that they have not demanded a government grant for that mess. The difference between Liberal Art and garbage is wording.
Yeah, because if some asshole on the internet doesn't like it, it couldn't possibly be art.
If he does like it, it is art?
There's a lesson I learned in my college art appreciation class. Just because its art, doesn't mean its particularly good or worthwhile art. Can I turn the local welfare office into my dreamed-of beer bong installation piece?
That's the thing. I think that the only reasonable definition of art is that art is anything that anyone presents as art. What makes good art is a completely different matter.
Most modern artists are nothing but skilled con men. I watched a thing the other day on a big show they were having in Florence. The main piece was an old armored personnel carrier turned upside down with a tread mill on the top. It was supposed to be a comment on failed US military endeavors or something. To think that guy got himself in a big international show by flipping a tank over and sticking a tread mill on it. That is a first class con.
Real art would be keeping the tank upright and powering it via charging children a fee to run on a treadmill connected to the drive train.
How do you know that other people don't get great aesthetic pleasure from a tank turned upside down with a treadmill on top?
I generally hate political art, so a lot of contemporary stuff is crap in my eyes too. Why the fuck does everything have to be some sort of leftist social critique?
But I think that the idea of modernism is valid and very interesting. I even like some of the post-modern ideas of art, but hate the word "post-modern" and am irritated by people who use it a lot.
Zeb, I love you this morning
John, was it an APC or a tank?
Also, most modern artists are dead by now. Modern is not the same as contemporary.
Which goes back to my point. Why the hell can't I turn my local welfare office into my beer pong installation piece? If the OWSers can confiscate public property for their art, I should have the same free speech!!!
Why the hell can't I turn my local welfare office into my beer pong installation piece?
Have you tried yet? You'll never find out unless you try? Do you think that those occupy Oakland people worried about whether they were allowed to stack up chain-link fences?

I like my high school art teacher's definition better: "It isn't art unless it's good."
I assume you are joking. The definition I propose above is the only workable definition. The end.
Exactly. Only hardcore BDSM porn is art. The rest is all a liberal scam!
This simple definition came from a fellow who sat on the board of an art museum.
"If I can do it, it's not art."
That works for me.
Bullshit. Anyone can make art. You are still confusing art generally with good art that people want to see. Also, even then it is a stupid definition. Art doesn't have to be difficult to do. I am so fucking sick of people who think that their personal tastes define what constitutes art.
So the Occupy "movement" actually did accomplish something!

The arson is not funny. But it is kind of funny that it appears to be some aging boomer moron who is doing it.
The Los Angeles arsonist who has been making news the last few days for lighting perhaps forty car fires is operating in my hood. Just now I drove back from dinner past the Hollywood & Highland complex, only minutes from my house, where the night before this mysterious person ignited a Camaro. The LAPD is now describing him as "an older white male with a receding hairline and shoulder-length ponytail."

reply to this
I think that was like 40 years ago.
it appears to be...
...another flash judgement by John. Soon to be retracted or more likely forgotten as he moves to the next in the endless series.
How many people under the age of 50 can be described as "an older white male with a receding hairline and shoulder-length ponytail."?
The description is what it is. If you don't like it, go read another blog where they ignore that stuff. No one will miss your weapons grade stupid. Trust me.
How many people under the age of 50 can be described as "an older white male with a receding hairline and shoulder-length ponytail."
Lots...could easily be a gen x'er.
Not that it matters.
How can you be "an older white male" and not be, well, older. A gen xer is no older than 45. That is not older in this day and age. Older means at least 50. And that means boomer.
I guess it could be an adolescent girl meeting that description too. But I doubt it.
Older means at least 50.
Depends on the age of the speaker, I would guess. Also, appearance and age are often deceptive. I had a teacher in HS who was grey headed when she was 33. Looked, 'older'.
Perhaps. But chances are, older means just that.
Perhaps, although the ELF/ALF thing is more of a gen X phenom...
But that's just my snap judgment on it.
*snap judgments are better than flash judgment, right?
Although ELF isn't really an organization. It is just anyone who wants to take up the banner and start burning stuff down.
The Boom peaked and, thus, ended in 1960, so the oldest Gen X'er is 51, excepting those born on Jan 1.
Gen X is defined as starting after 1964. Being a 1960 baby, please don't change me from being a boomer at this late age!!
My Gen X ass it is. '64? Sez who?
Peak = boom over.
P Brooks makes a good point below. It could be Lindsey Lohan.
Deets...
The developments came a day after police distributed DVDs featuring footage of a man, between 20 and 30 years old with a receding hairline and a shoulder-length ponytail, whom they described as a person of interest.
So even Gen X was too old.

Come on, John- it was a tie-dyed Gadsden Flag shirt.
Warning: I will have to do the Morning Link ritual dance, involving feathers, Ron Paul's blood, and matching monocles.
So, here's a question. How did monocles come to be seen as an accessory for rich industrialists? I would have thought that a monocle would be the cheaper, low budget alternative to regular, binocular glasses.
The monocle just looks better with the silk tophat. The additional squint is also better for keeping the lower-classes in check.
Sorry to be so picky, but the best top hats are made from beaver skin.
agreed, oh master of industry.
Reaver IS industry!
Fur felt is made from fur, not skin.
Monocles are like the long fingernails of the Chinese mandarin.
By their very impracticality, they advertise the immensely high status of the wearer.
They say, "I am so sure that I will not have to do any actual work today that I disdain to wear glasses that will stay on my head. I will instead hold a polished piece of glass up to my eye using only the muscles of my face. But that will be no problem for me, because I will remain behind my desk while lackeys bring me beverages and cater to my every wish."
What other wishes do your "coachboys" cater to?
Best post of the year.
Monocles are the kind of thing Jews wear when they are examining diamonds.
And top hats.
Fine purveyors satisfy all of your prescription monocle needs. For $50 I think I'll get one, but I'll have to buy a vest and at least one hat.
Next time I will have one of the little people code the link: http://www.warbyparker.com/monocle/
You don't ALREADY own several?
Turn in your decoder ring.
Don't forget the cape and cane.
the dance does nothing!

Oh that is clearly idea they were attempting to convey. You must remember however that it was constructed by half-wits.

Cantor is an idiot. Reagan faced a Democratic house with a powerful speaker. He wanted to win the cold war and get the economy going. The price of that was letting the Congress spend like crazy and giving up on any dreams of reducing the overall size of government.
We elect a President not a King. And the Congress gets a vote too. And the people whose guy didn't win the Presidency get some voice in government too. It is how a Democratic Republic works.

According to some genius at the Atlantic (their shitty fucking website kept locking up my computer, so find the link yourself), the reason Finnish schools are so awesome is....
TAAAAH DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Social Justice!
And THERE ARE NO PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN FINLAND. Verboten, apparently.
If we could just create a near homogeneous society, we could be just like the Fins. I didn't know the Atlantic was so into ethnic cleansing.
The Finns at least have decent gun laws.
And are great race car drivers. The Fins are all right.
Rally car drivers, which is even more impressive. Triple digit speeds down a logging trail....they must get their pants tailor made to have room for their balls.
They also make great ammunition and long-distance rifles.
I was discussing education with a bunch of Europeans (mixed nationality) not too long ago, and they were aghast at the concept of homeschooling, some even likening it to child abuse.
Well if we keep home schooling kids over here, we might start sticking people in ovens or something. Good thing the Europeans have never done that. Oh wait..
At some point everyone who's not blinded by ideology will realize that kids who are homeschooled tend to excel academically and are quite socially well adjusted. The only people Ive heard say otherwise are people who are invested in the status quo, and they generally don't have direct contact with those kids.
As with any form of education, it ain't about the institution/locale, but the execution. I have worked with homeschooled kids that were neither academically nor socially on par with their peers. And I have worked with some that were way ahead of their peers. Some parents make good teachers. Others, not so much. Some that don't, don't realize that they don't.
I doubt every home schooled kid is a budding Goethe. But the statistics say overall they do better. But most of that I think is due to self selection. You have to be really committed to your kid's education to home school. And parents who are committed tend to have kids who do well.
And parents's tend to be more invested in their own children's education than teacher's are invested in other people's children's education.
Lots of teachers just don't give a fuck. Even a parent who is a bad teacher is likely to teach better than an average teacher who doesn't give a fuck.
Sure. However, I have met (and been taught by) more incompetent professional teachers than I have met bad homeschooling parents. Perhaps it's just a function of the types of people I associate with (and I don't have any very close friends who homeschool, only colleagues at work), but their kids all seem quite bright, engaged with the idea of learning, and well socialized.
How can professional teachers be incompetent? They love shaping the next generation so much they're willing to work for low pay.
Low compared to what?
db,
John is about right on this one. Also, Homeschooling SES predicts better achievement...some numbers, but note the caveat.
http://eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPort.....o=ED424309
I'm sure there are parents out there who are poor teachers and would not be the best choice for educating their children. I also feel that the typical religious association with homeschooling makes it more likely that many homeschooled kids will learn incorrect superstitions rather than science. However I have seen a lot of evidence of good parent teachers, and still think that it should be the choice of the parent, not the state, that decides how their child will be educated.
Of course.
We can't have parents teaching their religion to their children, especially if it conflicts with our own dogma we believe about the end of the universe.
All Young Pioneers must be taught the official doctrine of the state.
Er, origin of the universe.
Given the self-selection of home-schooled kids mentioned above, it would be hard to design a statistically valid study, possibly excepting longitudinal ones.
Gee, a government report asking us to completely ignore the evidence, that homeschooling kids run academic circles around their government schooled peers, and not be hasty in concluding that home schooling just might be a better alternative.
How fucking original.
a government report
You might check your assumptions there bub.

That was like the second-best "worst chat room ever" comment, ever.
If you work for someone who offers paid holidays, isn't it common practice to give employees a paid holiday even if the holiday falls on the weekend? It is part of the agreed compensation, after all. I would be pissed if I didn't get a paid holiday for Christmas and New Years, even when they fall on the weekend (I had Friday as the holiday in my for-profit, private sector job).
Actually, this whole line of thought is pretty rich considering all you folks seem to have jobs that allow you to spend all day on HnR, while you only see me during the day on my vacation because I can't even access the site at my federal job. I'm lucky if I can check it on my phone during lunch.
I am so amazingly productive that I can have a window open for personal browsing at all times and no one notices, because they're dazzled by my proficiency as I erect multiple suspension bridges by lunch and cure cancer before the evening commute.
The only thing I get for high productivity is more work - that is, spending more of your money.
I find it ironic that of all the people here stealing form their bosses, it's the public servant doing the most work.

Oh, the humanity!
Nationwide, 173 law enforcement officers were killed in 2011, up 13 percent from the 153 killed in 2010. For the first time in 14 years, more officers died from firearms-related incidents than traffic-related incidents, the group said.
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. last week called the uptick in deaths "a devastating and unacceptable trend" that he blamed on the growing prevalence of illegal gun use.
Never let a tragedy go to waste!
Just don't mention Fast and Furious.
I always think that it is really funny (either that or infuriating, I can't decide) when people use percentages when talking about such small numbers. If this had been reported as "20 more police officers killed this year than last" out of the millions of police int he country, it would not seem very interesting or troubling.
No mention on the overall number of LEOs or whether that number went up in 2011. Not to mention no comment on the militarization of police that puts them in confrontational situations more frequently, and whether or not those numbers have been trending up.
Just don't mention Fast and Furious.
Or that there are other jobs in this country that pay far less and and are far more dangerous.
They're America's motherfucking heroes, ya know!
At least Politico had a pretty good quip when they noted this last week:
Looks like Michael Gerson got tired of giving handies to junkies and rolling the bums living under the bridge for quick cash.
Seriously, at what point should you realize that you are such a craven, mendacious. slimeball fuck that you should just off yourself out of shame?
Somebody is frustrated.
Hug?
Sounds like both Gerson and Paul need to read some actual historical documents before they make their offhand remarks about slavery.
- The Emancipation Proclamation freed nobody
- The only slaves freed by the federal government while Lincoln was alive were the ones freed in the District of Columbia in 1862
- The fantasy world Ron Paul lives in where South Carolina and six other States that seceded before Lincoln was sworn in as President would have returned to the Union if only the Congress and Lincoln had added them to the 1862 DC Emancipation Act is just that, a fantasy.
- Maybe if Ron Paul advocated the freedom of States to secede and scolded Lincoln for going to war over secession he would be closer to a valid point.
The historical facts are that States started fleeing the Union in 1860 and buying slaves from their owners was not going to reverse that one bit.
How did most countries get rid of slavery?
There were numerous methods, I am not sure that there is a one "most" method. Slavery ended in Ethiopia when Italy invaded and outright outlawed it. It ended in England pretty much the way Ron Paul describes it, without a war. England began enforcing their law on everybody else on the high seas. It has not ended in many African or Asian nations.
Now, back to the point of the war, the only way for Lincoln to avoid that was to let the secessionist States leave.
That expresses things so passively - why not say that Lincoln decided that the Constitution (a) prohibited secession, (b) gave the federal government the power to wage war against secessionist states, and (c) required the federal government to exercise this alleged power. All of these propositions were debatable. He took that interpretation which required him to get into a bloody civil war, and assumed that nobody could possibly disagree with his interpretation - he even suggested that he could go against the law in order to enforce his particular interpretation of the Constitution.
Only when he realized how long and bloody the war would be (thanks in part to his bad generals and the CSA's good ones) did he turn to abolishing slavery.
He himself, in Inaugural #2, did not take credit for being the great emancipator - he suggested that God was punishing North and South with a bloody war which neither side anticipated - punishing *both* sides for their complicity in slavery (we were apparently one of the few countries so punished, since most other countries got rid of slavery without war). I'm not sure Lincoln would have endorsed his adulators.
Before becoming President, he envisioned the peaceful withering away of slavery - putting it in the course of ultimate extinction, as he put it, without war. So if Paul was naive in his talk about peaceful abolition, Lincoln was too.
"So if Paul was naive in his talk about peaceful abolition, Lincoln was too."
Yes, well, the Southern slave states decided to go the mat to defend their peculiar institution. Lincoln was naive in foresight, Paul is naive in hindsight. They are not comparable errors.
Jebus fuck Tagliaferro, go back already to chronic self abuse and writing bad slashfic.
Northern armies freed millions of slaves by seizing them as contraband
Not to mention conscripting many of them to serve as soldiers.
Are you referring to this?
and
Conscripting them to serve as non-soldiers to further the Union war effort was just impressing them into slavery again.
"Maybe if Ron Paul advocated the freedom of States to secede and scolded Lincoln for going to war over secession he would be closer to a valid point"
Paul doesn't do that?
This book review puts Gerson in his context: Evangelicals like him are social-gospellers who fit in badly with traditional conservatives:
"Michael Gerson, for example, is an evangelical "conservative" who is actually anything but. Hart points to his book Heroic Conservatism, as well as to the Bush administration that Gerson worked for, as showing all the hallmarks of evangelicalism's idealistic reforming zeal and precious little of conservatism's traditional concerns for prudence, limits, order, and original sin."
http://www.firstthings.com/art.....angelicals
The problem with Gerson's analysis is that the residents of, say, Maine, are much physically closer (in terms of travel time and difficulty) to the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2012 than they were to South Carolina in 1861.
So if it was a moral imperative to invade the South and end slavery in 1861, why isn't it a moral imperative in 2012 to go to the Democratic Republic of Congo and save the unfortunates there?
I *love* mixing it up in a good Civil War thread.
Allow me to add: Sarah Palin is great, and what about those [name of sports team]?
I think Gerson is moving on from a standard Civil War thread type discussion to assert that you can't say you favor liberty if you refuse to engage in a perpetual crusade to advance the cause at the point of a gun as far as you can reach.
If going to war to free the slaves was a noble thing, but not one the free states of the North were obligated to undertake, then Paul would be perfectly morally free to either take it or leave it. For Gerson's argument to work, an obligation to go to war had to exist.
And if that obligation existed, a whole bunch of other similar obligations similarly exist now. But Gerson is fundamentally dishonest so I doubt he'd acknowledge that.
Whatever the latest symbol is for strong agreement, assume I've typed it here.
The Congo is a foreign country, South Carolina was not. The Confederacy's claim to be a separate suzerainity was, at best, dubious. Seccession had always been a controversial issue and the Founders ignored it as best they could, therefore is no Constitutional provision defining legal seccession.
No special treatment.
About 150 officers converged on the mountain park after ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death Sunday morning, and searchers used an aircraft with heat-sensing capabilities to hunt from the skies.
----
Safety concerns prompted authorities to keep about 125 tourists quarantined at a visitors center as the manhunt unfolded.
But early Monday morning, officers escorted them in their cars out of the park. Troyer said it was determined to be "better to do it (evacuate) under the cover of darkness than daylight."
Evacuee Dinh Jackson, a mother from Olympia, Washington, who came to the mountain to sled with family and friends, told The Associated Press that officials ordered people to hurry into the lodge after the shooting.
Jackson said officials had everyone get on their knees and place hands behind their heads as they went through the building, looking at faces to make sure the gunman was not among them.
"That was scary for the kids," she said.
You cannot be too careful, when OFFICER SAFETY is concerned.
Murder is grossly overrated.
A while back, some PDs around Cleveland had stated they couldn't guarantee response to certain parts of the city due to concerns for "officer safety".

Why don't you tell us what's on your mind today.
Murder is grossly overrated.
Can you say, "Disproportionate response"?
How many cops would they have sent in there if a civilian had been shot in a dispute over a barking dog? Would they have rounded up and detained everybody in the park and searched them?

Well, if you're a cop, you get demoted after you get your 6 months of back pay. No word what happens to "civilians" who intentionally mislead investigators and actively cover up crimes.
On the "yeah, right" side of the ledger for the New Year comes this little gem.
Because it's customary to not charge someone at the scene when they break into someone's house and assault them, while in a drunken rage.
FTA: "The State Police are very concerned about allegations such as these, and we've taken administrative action where we've suspended Trooper Miller," state police Troop D Capt. Frank Coots said Sunday. "We will conduct an internal investigation to determine if any State Police rules or regulations have been violated, and we will ensure that the State Police cooperate with the Utica Police Department in their criminal investigation."
No double-standard. Nope, none at all.
The policeman isn't there to create disorder; the policeman is there to preserve disorder.
"I'm a cop, so I'm gonna arrest and falsely imprison you multiple times, make false official statements and falsify police reports (all felonies, btw) because the most that will happen to me is I will get hit with a civil suit that taxpayers will foot the bill for.
For added pleasure, the internal investigation turned up perjury, for which he was obviously not charged. FTA: As part of the settlement of the federal lawsuit, Bonzo admitted to violating Wooldridge's rights. Bonzo resigned from the police department in 2007 after an internal police investigation concluded that he lied during a court hearing about having a relationship with the victim.
And for added, added pleasure, the guy's name is Michael Delbert Bonzo.
But according to a certain poster on here, cops are held to the same, nay higher standards than the rest of us.
"18 different law enforcement agencies present"
Eighteen?? So maybe
1. city police
2. county sheriff
3. state police
and then who else?
FBI, ATF, Interior Dept, USBP (choppers) for starters probably.
Maybe FBI, although I don't see how there was a federal issue.

Yanna is a 22 year old ballerina with all the grace and beauty of an artist born for the stage.
SHE CURRENTLY stars as the lead dancer of the musical 'Cats' in her home land of the Czech Republic and lives in a dancer's community with two other performers. It is no big surprise that her favorite body part is her legs which she of course shows off with a great deal of enthusiasm.
Petter met up with Yanna in the city of Prague where they shot a nice collection of ballerina images. He was instantly drawn to her physical grace and hard working attitude. Yanna is very proud of her trained body and rightly so. She is indeed a natural beauty and takes to modeling with the same confidence she brings to the stage.
Confident and sexy in all the right ways, Yanna is the kind of woman many of us only get to dream about.

Rosanna is a confident ballerina who can show off her dance moves to best effect on a reinforced-concrete floor.
But don't try to pick her up. There's only man who can sweep *her* off her feet and he's a forklift operator.
Treat her with respect, and she won't suddenly roll over and squash you flat like a pancake. Speaking of pancakes, I need to fix her another snack.
Where can I contact her, Hegre art wants to recruit her.
Open your arms wide and catch her. Your successor can then recruit her.
Okay.
I've always fantasized about being with a chick that flexible, but this one is just too damn skinny.
Sorry.
Sorry
Apparently, in Tennessee anyway, it's legal for the police to enter your house without a warrant or permission, beat you and then charge you with stand-alone resisting arrest. You will, of course, face civil penalties that the taxpayers will be responsible for.
"18 different law enforcement agencies present"
I suspect that includes several individual local police and sheriff's departments.
Possibly...

Coverham AbbeyFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Coverham Abbey.Coverham Abbey, North Yorkshire, England was a Premonstratensian monastery originally founded at Swainby in 1190 by Helewisia, daughter of the Lord Chief Justice Ranulf de Glanville. It was refounded at Coverham in about 1212 by her son Ranulf fitzRalph, who had the body of his late mother reinterred in the chapter house at Coverham.
There is some evidence that the during the first half of the 14th century the abbey and its holdings were attacked by the Scots, with the abbey itself being virtually destroyed. Later in the that century there is a record of there being fifteen canons plus the abbot in residence.
[edit] Dissolution and beyondThe abbey was closed in 1536 - Thomas Wraye, father of Sir Christopher Wray (Chief Justice of the King's Bench 1574-1592) was the last Seneschal of the Abbey. It was sold to Humphrey Orme and quickly became a ruin.
The principal surviving remains include the ruins of the church, and the guesthouse which was incorporated into a house built on the site in 1674. This was replaced in the late 18th century by the current building known as Coverham Abbey House but still retains the surviving monastic features. The original gatehouse partially survives and there are many sculptural remains preserved including several tomb covers some with effigies of knights, from the 14th century.
The site is usually inaccessible to the public but can be glimpsed from the churchyard of Coverham's redundant medieval parish church.

New Venice SchoolFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (January 2008)
The New Venice School is a movement in contemporary music in Venice from the 1970s to the present, made up of composers directly influenced from teachings at the Venice Conservatory (Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello) of the distinguished composer and pedagogue Baron Ernesto Rubin de Cervin (Albrizzi) (born 1936), who studied under Luigi Dallapiccola in Florence and Goffredo Petrassi in Rome. His many students include the composer and conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli (1946?2001); the composer and teacher Marino Baratello (born 1953); the composer Claudio Ambrosini (born 1948); and the Amsterdam-based, English composer Geoffrey King (born 1949). Although not directly influenced by the legacy of Rubin de Cervin and the above-listed lineage, other Venetian composers were influential in the development of new music in Venice, namely Bruno Maderna (1920?1973) and Luigi Nono (1924?1990).
[edit] StyleThere is no specific musical style that characterizes the music of the New Venice movement: their musics are varied and include influences from serialism (e.g., the music of Rubin de Cervin and his disciple, Sinopoli); and musical elements from jazz are evident (e.g. the music of Baratello) with a strong emphasis on modern polyphony. Certainly, their influences include the indigenous history of Venetian music, including the influence of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School; and experimental serial and post-serial[vague] developments at Darmstadt, specifically the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen.

As of March 3, 2008, Alfa TV is once again available through NOVA Cyprus following a new agreement that was signed between the two companies. The channel is no longer available through Athina Sat, which has ceased operations.[1]
Finally the channel is expected during the summer 2011 to get renamed to STAR Channel. The owner and former member of the parliament Sokratis Chasikos hired the former head manager of ANT1 Cyprus Giorgos Tsalakos as a head manager. The contract with LTV ends on May and will not be renewed.

The tomb of Frederick the GreatThe Tomb of Frederick the Great was a subject to which Old Fritz, as he was popularly known, gave a great deal of thought. Frederick the Great died on August 17, 1786 in the armchair of his study in Sanssouci. He wished to be buried in a tomb next to his "Weinbergh?uschen" and next to his favourite dogs.
In his 46-year reign, Frederick frequently concerned himself with his own death. Besides his political testament of 1752, which he re-elaborated before almost every battle, he made new orders before every war, in which he regulated the smallest details of all his familiars and finances. Just as frequent were his repetitions of the instructions for his funeral:
I have lived as a philosopher and wish to be buried as such, without circumstance, without solemn pomp, without splendour. I want to be neither opened nor embalmed. Bury me in Sanssouci at the level of the terraces in a tomb which I have had prepared for myself... Should I die in time of war or whilst on a journey, I should be buried in the first convenient place and brought to Sanssouci in the winter). (1769)
His nephew and successor Frederick William II did not obey these instructions and ordered him to be buried in the Potsdam garrison church (destroyed in 1945) next to his father, the soldier-king Frederick William I.[1]
However, the church grave was not the final resting place of the Prussian Kings. Almost 160 years later, in the turmoil of World War II, German soldiers took the coffins to safety in an attempt to save them from possible destruction. In March 1943 they were taken into an underground bunker in Potsdam-Eiche and then in March 1945 to the salt mine at Bernterode in Eichsfeld (Th?ringen). From there they were carried off after the war by soldiers of the U.S. Army to Marburg (Hesse). The coffins stayed in the Marburg Elisabeth Church until their transfer to Burg Hohenzollern at Hechingen (Baden-W?rttemberg) in August 1952.
After the reunification of Germany the final wish of Frederick the Great was fulfilled. On August 17, 1991, the 205th anniversary of his death, the sarcophagus with the mortal remains of the King was laid out in the forecourt of Sanssouci palace, escorted by an honour guard of the Bundeswehr. The burial took place that night in the tomb Frederick had planned for the purpose since 1744 on the highest terrace of vineyards. "Quand je serai l?, je serai sans souci" (Once I am there, I shall be carefree) Frederick the Great said in 1744[2].
His soldier-king father found his final resting place in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Mausoleum at the Church of Peace in Sanssouci Park.

Mondo Topless is a 1966 pseudo documentary directed by Russ Meyer, featuring Babette Bardot and Lorna Maitland among others. It was Meyer's first color film following a string of black & white "roughie nudies", including Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! While a straightforward sexploitation film, the film owes some debt to the French new wave and cin?ma v?rit? traditions, and is known to some under the titles: 'Mondo Girls' and 'Mondo Top.'
Its tagline: "Two Much For One Man...Russ Meyer's Busty Buxotic Beauties ... Titilating ... Torrid ... Untopable ... Too Much For One Man!"
The film was banned in Finland.

[edit] PlotThe film presents a snapshot of '60s San Francisco before shifting its focus to strippers. The strippers' lives are earnestly portrayed as they reveal the day-to-day realities of sex work, talk bra sizes, relate their preferences in men, all voiced over while dancing topless to a faux "rock" soundtrack. Throughout a large portion of the film, the narrator talks about the women as if they are a Sub-Genre of the Counter Culture Movement somewhat similar to the Beatnik or Hippie movements that were highly prevalent during the same era. The "Topless" movement as it is called by the narrator could also be perceived as an allegorical subsect of the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s.

[edit] In popular cultureMondo Topless became the focus of a brief comedy bit on The Opie and Anthony Show on XM Radio in 2006. Since that time, the introduction to their morning radio show plays a clip of Meyer saying "But enough of this palaver! Let's get the show on the road!"
The Philadelphia, PA based garage-rock group Mondo Topless named themselves after the film.
[edit] Documentary traditionsThe title Mondo Topless derives from the series of "mondo" films of the early 1960s. The first and most successful of these was Mondo Cane (A Dog's World). The purpose of these films was to bypass censorship laws by presenting both sexual and graphically violent material in a documentary format.
Mondo Topless shares some stylistic similarities with Jean-Luc Godard's collaborative effort, Le plus vieux m?tier du monde (The Oldest Trade in the World). Mondo Topless, like most other Meyer films, drew much of its inspiration from the more relaxed European attitudes toward sex, and was followed by a host of imitators.

[edit] HistoryMondo Topless formed in 1992 in Philadelphia, and take their name from the 1966 film of the same name.[1] The group's Stooges-inspired garage rock is distinguished by their use of a Vox Continental electric organ. Their debut single was the 1995 7" release, "I Want You To" b/w "Real Gone Girl", with their first full-length following the next year. They followed its release with touring across the United States for two years, until breaking to release their sophomore effort, 1998's Get Ready for Action.[1] Go Fast!, the group's third full-length, appeared in 2002.[2][3][4] Further touring around the U.S. followed the album's release.[5] Take it Slow, was released in 2006, and features covers of songs by Paul Revere & the Raiders and Solomon Burke.[6][7][8] Their most recent LP, "Freaking Out", is an all covers album, including interpretations of songs by Cream & Camper Van Beethoven among others. After nearly 20 years, leader Steinig retired the Mondo Topless name in early 2011 after the departures of Kris Alutius, Scott Rodgers, and Steve Thrash. The three of them now perform as The Mud Falcons.

PromiseFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For other uses, see Promise (disambiguation).
A promise is a commitment by someone to do or not do something.
In the law of contract, an exchange of promises is usually held to be legally enforceable, according to the Latin maxim pacta sunt servanda.

[edit] TypesBoth an oath and an affirmation can be a promise. One special kind of promise is the vow.
A notable type of promise is an election promise.
In contract law, a promise is a manifestation of intention to act or refrain from acting in a specified way.[1] It is so made as to justify a promisee in understanding that a commitment has been made. The person manifesting the intention is the promiser. The person to whom the manifestation is addressed is the promisee. Where performance of the promise is assumed to benefit a person other than the promisee, that person is a beneficiary. But in contract law, the word promise is commonly used to refer to promises which result in the promiser's word justifying expectations of performance from which a legal duty will arise in term of results. For instance, A orally agrees to sell land to B. This is an offer. B agrees to buy the land and pays $1000 to A. This is an acceptance of the offer. If the land did not legally belong to A, his is a fraud and B is legally expected to recover his $1000 By virtue of this indirect recognition of the duty to convey promise accurately, the agreement is a contract. If the promise is obviously misunderstood, the contract is void. Some say that the contract is a promise for a promise.
Oath: Individuals that take oaths should be honest and sincere about their statement or goal and be committed to fulfil a specified oath.[2]
[edit] ExamplesMy friend promised me she would be there for my birthday.
My friend promised to do as I say.
My stepfather promised not to be cruel to me. -Cinderella
[edit] Conditional commitmentIn loan guarantees, a commitment requires to meet an equity commitment, as well as other conditions, before the loan guarantee is closed.
[edit] ReligionReligions have similar attitudes towards promises.
[edit] ChristianityMain article: Oath
In Christianity, a distinction is made between simple promises and oaths or vows. An oath is a promise invoking God as a witness.[3] A vow is a solemn form of a promise typically made to commit oneself to a moral good with God as witness, and binds oneself to its fulfillment over time.[4]
Some groups of Christians, such as the Religious Society of Friends and the Mennonites, object to the taking of both oaths and affirmations, basing their objections upon a commandment given in the Sermon on the Mount, and regard all promises to be witnessed by God.
See also biblical covenants and biblical alliance.
[edit] IslamIn An-Nahl, god forbids Muslims to break their promises after they have confirmed them. All promises are regarded as having Allah as their witness and guarantor. In the Hadith, the Prophet states that a Muslim who made a promise and then saw a better thing to do, should do the better thing and then make an act of atonement for breaking the promise.[citation needed]. It is frowned upon/forbidden to break a promise in Islam. However when someone does break a promise, they are required to beg for forgiveness. One of the many ways of doing so is fasting for a prescribed amount of time. One of the four types of promises that are punished quickly is when you want to harm a relationship when the other person wants to keep it .[5]
[edit] PhilosophyPhilosophers have tried to establish rules for promises. Immanual Kant suggesed promises should always be kept, while some consequentialists argue that promises should be broken whenever doing so would yield benefits. In How to Make Good Decisions and Be Right All the Time, Iain King tried to reconcile these positions, suggesting that promises should be kept 'unless they are worth less to others than a new option is to you,' [6] and that this requires a relevant, unforeseen and reasonably unforeseeable change in the situation more important than the promise itself arising after the promise is made.[7]

I just realized this was written in 2002. I wonder what the gun crime rate is now. Any government that tells you that you have no right to self defense is not looking after your best interest. Self defense is the most basic right anyone has. No government or police can protect you. I can't believe you all allow this to continue. I keep a gun at home for self defense and have a license to carry it concealed any where I go. And I do. If I am attacked then at least I have a chance to stay alive. By the time the police arrive they can either arrange for my body to be picked up or take a statement from me. I choose the later. Britons let a right be taken from them and now it will be much harder to get it back. But you should try.
