When David Evans was diagnosed with a hernia, British National Health Service guidelines said he should receive surgery within 18 weeks. Instead, it took almost a year, repeated calls from his doctor, and the intervention of a member of Parliament to get him into surgery. In the meantime, Evans, who is a farmer, used an ultrasound machine intended for use on pregnant sheep to keep an eye on his hernia.
