TSA Celebrates 10 Years of Sucking!
A decade into its existence, a new report blasts the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as a 10-year-old monster child. From the Wash Post:
After a $56 billion federal investment in airline security, flying is no safer than it was before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the bare hands of passengers might be the best defense once a terrorist gets on board, two members of Congress [Reps. John Mica and Paul Broun] said Wednesday.
Deriding the Transportation Security Administration as a bloated bureaucracy that recruits security personnel with ads on gas pumps and pizza boxes, the two House Republicans said it needed to undergo almost a dozen reforms….
Mica and Broun, both longtime critics of the agency, challenged the need for 3,986 employees at its Washington headquarters, saying they earned an average of $103,852 a year.
The Post account notes that the TSA (Testicle Squeezing Agency) has its defenders, especially among those folks paid to do so:
TSA spokesman Greg Soule denounced the report.
"At a time when our country's aviation system is safer, stronger and more secure than it was 10 years ago, this report is an unfortunate disservice to the dedicated men and women of TSA who are on the front lines every day protecting the traveling public," Soule said. "TSA has developed a highly trained federal workforce that has safely screened over 5 billion passengers and established a multilayered security system reaching from curb to cockpit. "

Read the actual report here. Some lowlights:
? Since 2001, TSA staff has grown from 16,500 to over 65,000, a near-400% increase. In the same amount of time, total passenger enplanements in the U.S. have increased less than 12%.
? Since 2002, TSA procured six contracts to hire and train more than 137,000 staff, for a total of more than $2.4 billion, at a rate of more than $17,500 per hire. More employees have left TSA than are currently employed at the agency.
? Over the past ten years, TSA has spent nearly $57 billion to secure the U.S. transportation network, and TSA's classified performance results do not reflect a good return on this taxpayer investment.
? On average, there are 30 TSA administrative personnel—21 administrative field staff and nine headquarters staff—for each of the 457 airports where TSA operates.

"established a multilayered security system reaching from curb to cockpit."
Isn't that called taint?
And we have a winner.
Also called the grundle. Or the chin rest, if you're feeling froggy.
What about me?!
For you, it's just the place where the webbing between your partner's thumb and forefinger goes when he has you in the classic "bowling ball" grip.
What the
OK, thanks!
Come on, man - you set yourself up for that one. What was I supposed to do??
I call them the Terrorist Stopping Ass-kickers! Yeah!
Wow, you managed to make me feel like the TSA is even more repulsive than I previously thought. Kudos, that's an impressive feat.
If the piles and piles of anecdotal evidence aren't enough, the raw numbers will drive the point home.
And congress is going to fix in 3,2, well, it's stuck on 2.
Didn't the TSA try to outlaw any derision of itself which involves the use of its acronym?
attacks and the bare hands of passengers might be the best defense
They'll have to be, because the non-terrorists will be the only ones unarmed. Get it?
But they're more educated and smarter than the average private sector worker!
You can tell because they earn more!
And they earn more because they're more educated!
The circle is closed!
TSA Celebrates 10 Years of Sucking!
And boy howdy are their jaws tired!
the two House Republicans said it needed to undergo almost a dozen reforms....
Just pull the fucking plug!
+1
Only one reform needed.
TSA, schmee essay.
The whole Department of Homeland Security is a counterproductive, expensive waste.
Tell that to the literally BILLIONS (counting all future descendants) of American lives they've saved from all the thwarted terrorist attacks that remain classified!
/Redstate
If you include future descendants, it's "created or saved".
I think the Coast Guard is legit.
They existed before DHS, though. You can just move them back to wherever the hell they were before.
USCG started under Treasury, was moved to DOT in approx. 1967, now DHS. Started in 1790 (only service never disbanded since inception) and should have stayed under Treasury, though the move to DHS was a natural fit, sigh. Missions, in order: SAR (search rescue); LE; then war.
this report is an unfortunate disservice to the dedicated men and women of TSA who are on the front lines every day protecting the traveling public
But who will protect them from the TSA?

What? I thought you were famous.

Startled babies and cats on ice are crushing you guys.
Beat me!
400%? Someday we will all work for the TSA.
TSA agent: We're going to be conducting a groin check, ma'am.
*pulls pants down*
TSA agent: And by that I mean we're gonna rock out with our cocks out.
Don't want to thread jack, but Gary Johnson is threatening to run as a 3rd party candidate if they don't allow him in the GOP debates. His best friend is Jim Villinucci who has a radio talk show here in NM. Villinucci is talking about it now:

Re: NAL,
With Paul being on almost a dead heat race with the "top tier" candidates for Iowa and still CBS giving him only 90 seconds (ok, I exaggerated - they gave him 89 seconds), what does Gary expect to receive? 20 Seconds?
"Mr. Johnson?"
"Yes, I believe that we as a country..."
"Time's up, Mr. Johnson. Mr. Gingrich, your reply, sir?"
OT: Hey, prime-time TV comes up with a few right-wing militia episodes, and my favorite gem of the day --
"you say you're not a threat, not a criminal, not dangerous, but how do you explain putting a down payment on a gun at a gun shop this morning?"
Oh, Hollywood. The TSA hates guns, too -- bet you're best pals!

Nothing that doubling the size of the work force can't solve!
And just 'cause I can't see anywhere else for it, there is some good news:
"House GOP kills high speed rail funding"
http://blog.sfgate.com/nov05el.....ing/?tsp=1
That $50B pork-tub that recently ballooned to $98Bn after they found someone who could count relied on Fed money and 'private investment'.
Well, they couldn't find anyone dumb enough in the private sector, including our fave RR magnate and "kick-me" doll, Warren B., to put up a penny and now the House says 'naaah...".
Hell, they've probably only blown $25M on lunches with Willy Brown; lets call it sunk costs and forget the whole thing.
Maddow was just smarming over this on her show. "How are we going to recover if we don't have trains?!?!?"
"TSA has developed a highly trained federal workforce that has safely screened over 5 billion passengers..."
I'm so glad that there haven't been any TSA employees injured while doing screenings.
I'm surprised. You'd think *someone* would have snapped and punched the pat-downer by now.
I'd bet that the TSAs workers comp rate is competitive, not in the good way.
I wonder--would I be able to avoid both scan and pat-down if I decide to fly naked?
would grab your privates anyway with his filthy nitrile gloved paws.
Criminals, traitors and quislings.
That's all they ever were and all they will ever be.
Happy frickin 10th birthday turdballs!
Since the TSA was created, no one has been attacked by a tiger on board a commercial airline. Do we really want to risk future tiger attacks? We NEED these guys!

It wasn't good enough to say twice, I admit.
TSA has been nothing more than a jobs program for the chronically unemployed. We are just lucky that terrorists haven't attempted another attack, it would have surely succeeded.
While they focus on groping passenger groins and digitally strip searching them, they allow 60% of cargo in the hold to go unchecked. They also remain oblivious to the glaringly risk of a ground based attack on arriving and departing aircraft using little more than a high powered rifle.
Airport workers routinely enter the secure area with nothing more than a glance moving tubs of goods that are never inspected. Add to that the four screeners arrested this year for smuggling contraband through security. In each instance, the contraband was drugs, but could have as easily contained explosives.
The potential sources of attack are virtually infinite and it is impossible for any agency to physically guard every possible venue. TSA may the least qualified agency of all for the real task at hand. The only way to effectively intercept these plots is through intelligence, which is vastly beyond the capability of anyone employed by this agency and rightfully the realm of the FBI, NSA and CIA.
This agency has been hopelessly mismanaged and staffed by incompetent managers whose only demonstrated skills are fear mongering and misrepresenting their policies to Congress. Mica is correct that the best way to assure airline safety and improve the travel experience is to dismantle TSA and replace it with private screening firms who have incentive to operate efficiently and provide a civilized customer experience.

100%. I've been saying that TSA is nothing but a jobs program since its inception. That and I'm sure whoever invented the nudie screener has been to a few fundraisers in their time.
I hate the TSA more every time I fly. Got yelled at by an old hag last weekend for not collecting my belt, shoes, jacket, wallet, phone, keys, and travel documents from the x-ray belt in under 8 seconds. Eff off C!
How 'bout them apples. So funny.
The TSA faced a public outcry last year after it introduced the new scanners, which critics thought were overly revealing, and procedures for vigorous pat-downs of those who refused to use the scanners.
They are no longer the most significant issue for regular travelers, according to the U.S. Travel Association. A survey released Wednesday by the travel industry group said the biggest objection voiced by frequent fliers was that other passengers delay security lines with too much carry-on baggage. They said passengers also dislike requirements that they remove their shoes, belts and jackets.
How depressing.
"'They're not the same Americans now. They crave authority,' he said. "They lust after regulation. They love being frisked, x-rayed, and felt-up at airports because it gives them a false sense of significance.'"
