More Liquor Liberalization
Last Tuesday, the same day Washington voters approved private distribution of distilled spirits in that state, voters in 105 Georgia cities and counties legalized Sunday sales of packaged alcoholic beverages. The issue was on the ballot in 127 jurisdictions. The upshot:
Georgia will be a patchwork of alcohol laws. In Atlanta, Savannah and most other urban areas, alcohol will be sold on Sundays, beginning as soon as Nov. 20. But in at least 21 other, mostly rural, towns and counties, the law will stay as it has since the late 19th century.
Most of Georgia will now have rules less strict than my state, Texas, which still keeps liquor stores closed on Sundays (although other retailers are allowed to sell beer and wine). At least we got rid of Dallas' dry districts last year.
Massachusetts, meanwhile, may legalize happy hours, which were banned 27 years ago under a law signed by then-Gov. Michael Dukakais, who calls the proposal "outrageous" and warns that "people will lose their lives if this happens."

What does Bush have to do with this, other than looking stupid?
What did "the tank shot" ever have to do with anything?
Nothing; it was just hilarious.
Wait, are you getting defensive for Dukakis?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
(gasp)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
If the Duke had won, the World Trade Center would still be part of the New York skyline.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
If the Duke had won, the World Trade Center would still be part of the New York skyline.
And we also would have been invaded by reptilian aliens, so there is that to consider.
We would have been out of Saudi Arabia.
Game-changer.
How would us pulling out of Saudi Arabia stopped the Jews from blowing up the WTC?
Because the Illuminati, Freemasons, and Trilateral Commission would have convinced them not to. Amirite?
Why are you guys in the tank for Dukakis?
What you did, etc.
I wonder what Saudi Arabia rules by Saddam Hussein would have looked like?
Anyway this is all bullshit. Gore would have invaded Iraq quicker then Bush...Hell we would probably be Iran by now.
Be in Iran now
Right, because we already are Iran.
Don't fatuous Joe M. The magic oracle that tells our Great Leader the future and what to do about it lives in the sky, not in some well.
Geez.
Get off my man Dukakis! Mofo had my back.
"Michael Dukakais, who calls the proposal "outrageous" and warns that "people will lose their lives if this happens."
Mass. always has someone to freak out whenever some small change to liquor laws is proposed. (I am sure other states do too, but I happen to live in the Boston TV market, so I see the stupid ads sometimes.) They always seem to portray such changes as unknown and dangerous territory, as if you can't just look at all of the other states who don't ban happy hour to see what kind of death and destruction it causes.
I live in MA now. My company frequently (once a month) holds a happy hour like event, except that it's free. There haven't been any problems. It's almost like people can restrain themselves.
It's not TKTea time is it?
Never heard of that.
That's what we had at TKT (back before Shire bought the place lock, stock & barrel).
It freaked me out because up to that point my entire professional experience had been on a Navy Ship (dry) & the steel industry (drier) & the sight of coworkers three sheets to the wind during working hours was about as shocking as having a porn star read a book to my kids.
Nope. The new hires for that month have to organize a party in the company cafeteria after work. There are usually around 100 bottles of beer and 6 bottles of wine.
So, banning alcohol sales will boost church attendance? Well, that sounds like an airtight plan. Glad to hear she thought the issue through before pulling the lever.
Well, if alcohol sales are banned on Sundays, where else are the alkies gonna get their fixes besides communion wine?
😉
At one time, Gloucester City, NJ had the most bars per square mile than any other place on the planet, yet they were all closed on Sunday.
Go figure.
If she wants people in church on Sunday she really needs to ban selling alcohol on Saturdays.
Fools Go to Church on Sunday
Shhh!!! Nobody tell Patsy Scarborough about all those monks who brewed (and in some cases still brew) beer.
Yeah, but those are godless Euromonks.
It bugs me that KY has a trappist monastery and that they make cheese and not beer. (They should do both)
The also make fruitcake and bourbon fudge, but they are trappists, they should be making beer.
Wait... They make cheese, fruitcake and bourbon fudge. Substitute beer for the fruitcake and I'm in heaven.
Ive never seen the fudge, it must be relatively new.
But yeah, they need to ditch the fruitcake (their cheese rocks).

Monk of Death?
don't worry about GA. Folks are sharp enough to stock up on Friday or Saturday, so Sunday takes care of itself. Besides, at Rooster's still in the foothills, the day of the week is immaterial.
In my state, a private company can sell you a triple shot of Popov with an Michael Malloy Antifreeze Colada on the side, but only the state can sell you a bottle of Beaujolais nouveau.
Which state? Guess. Hint: Rhymes with Tensylvania.
Excellent timing, GA voters, as I am going to Atlanta on business in a few weeks. On that note, does anyone familiar with the area have any Atlanta restaurant/bar/general recommendations?
Everyone will tell you to go to Buckhead. But they would be wrong. Midtown and Virginia Highlands is much better. I would reccomend LaTavola at the corner of Virginia and Highland and Atkins Park, which is just up the street.
For breakfast I really like the Flying Biscuit. Coming from Canada, I would imagine you have never had actual grits in your life. It is just a very good kind of funky hippie Southern food place that is known for its biscuits and breakfasts.
The Vortex in midtown and little five points is kind of a fun proto punk bar that has great burgers. There is a place in midtown called Baronda that is just a great down home Italian place, really happening bar in it too. I go there every time I am in Atlanta.
Fagans biscuit house if you're out Gwinette county way (if memory serves) is good.
Agreed on Buckhead/VAHigh. Buckhead has gone way, way downhill. VAHigh is good, Little 5 Points is good if you want to see the counterculture, Fellini's or Johnny's New York have the best pizza.
Buckhead has been dead for a decade+. No one tells anyone that.
Midtown
NTTIAWWT
Massive disagreement with Flying Biscuit. Probably not the worst biscuits, but easily the worst biscuits from a restaurant with biscuits in its name.
Dagny, for great food and drinks, go to Holman and Finch Public House.
All good suggestions, John. LaTavola is great, as are the burgers at The Vortex.
My co-worker and I sneak away to the Flying Biscuit for breakfast once in a while.
And if you are there on a Friday afternoon, go down to Auburn Street where all the soul food restaurants do a Friday fish fry. Fantastic fried catfish. You just can't get that kind of food outside of the South.
And don't let anyone sell you on Fat Matt's barbeque. Totally overrated.
Awesome, thanks John. I am definitely looking forward to real Southern food. My hotel's downtown but I had a feeling the cooler stuff would be in other neighborhoods. 🙂
I lived in Atlanta for a year. My wife and I loved it. Would go back in a heart beat. Miss Pitty Pat's Porch is down town. It is a bit touristy and over done. But the food is good.
I'll always fondly remember the Brick Store Pub in Decatur. Worth the side trip if you enjoy Belgian beer.
Good beer is one of the central tenets of my belief system. That's one impressive list. Gulden Draak on tap? Yes please.
I have been to that place. It is great. Decateur is about 20 minutes. But I agree with MP, worth the drive.
There's a MARTA stop very near the Brick Store Pub, in case you don't want to drive. Just be careful, MARTA isn't the safest transit system in the country.
+100 for the polite understatement.
Well, as a native Atlantan, I felt I had to be honest about MARTA, but driving in Atlanta is no easy task either for the uninitiated and/or patron of said pub. I had to dramatically dial back my agressive driving style when I moved out west. It's like kamekazi school on I-75/I-85/285.
285 is named for the two speeds of traffic.
First 85. Then 2.
Dagny T., in my drinking days the best beer I ever had was Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale. No additivies, just lots of hops, malt, yeast, and water. I hope to drink a few on my death bed.
You sound white.
While you're in GA, look for beers from local brewery Sweetwater on tap.
If you like South American, try to get a reservation at Tierra. Small family owned restaurant in Midtown, and the hours vary. Best SA food I've ever had.
Italian--try Nino's on Cheshire Bridge Rd. It has been there like 30 or 35 years and a restaurant doesnt stay in business that long unless they know what they are doing.
Breakfast--Java Jive on Ponce de Leon Ave.
For such a short street (it's less than 3 miles long, I believe) Cheshire Bridge Road may have the strangest mix of businesses in Atlanta, with several fine old fashioned restaurants, adult films, antique shops, smokeshops, strip clubs, gay clubs, a bakery, a barbershop and one of the only places in Atlanta to watch indy films all elbowing each other.
A guy named Jim Stacy made a local public TV program about his favorite restaurants called Get Delicious. You can view it along with the sequel at http://video.pba.org/program/get-delicious/
Yeah CBR is a bizarre mix with something for everyone.
Speaking of CBR I forgot to mention the Collonade--good Southern food, the clientele is mostly elderly ladies and gay men.
+1000000000 for the Colonnade.
Hong Kong Harbor is good too.
For traditional Southern cooking, meaning boiled for hours and/or fried, the rankings are:
1. The Colonnade
2. Mary Mac
3. Pitty Pats Porch
My Sister's Room
1271 Glenwood Ave.
Stupid work filters blocking the lesbian bar website. I haz a sad.
Make friends with your network admin.
I'm surprised there weren't more posters here recommending lesbian bars to you. It seems like the think the H&R commentariat would do. :-p
Dagny... the Brick Store Pub. http://www.brickstorepub.com/bottledbeer/
in Decatur. Beers, beers and more beers. Heaven.
Good call MP.....must refresh...
My clearest memory about Atlanta is that everyone drives really fast, like 80mph on average. It's great.
yup...once those pesky wrecks get cleared up, it's back to green flag racing.
Also check out the 285 Foodies Forum for restaurant recommendations.
If you hit the Little Five Points area, I recommend Fox Bros BBQ* and the Porter Beer Bar (good food, massive beer selection). Then catch an improv show at Dad's Garage.
*Fox Bros. BBQ -- about the best BBQ in town. It's either them or Sam's BBQ1, but that's in Marietta.
The problem with "happy hour" is the same problem as shutting bars right at 2 a.m., which Massachusetts requires: it tends to cause people to rush to get their drinks in fast, contributing to binge intake.
If you don't like happy hour, you should also not like the 2 a.m. shut-down, and you should oppose both. The Duke would have more credibility on this if he would denounce the 2 a.m. shutdown at the same time.
Even so, if the Duke had been elected president, you never would have heard of Osama bin Laden.
You really think that we'd still be fighting the Cold War, then? Seems a bit of stretch to me.
No.
We'd have been out of Saudi Arabia.
And this somehow would have caused a reverse temporal abortion of OBL.
The dumb thing with the 2 AM last call is that the T closes before 1.
If the Duke had been elected president
Leroy Neiman: Governor, I call this "What Might Have Been". It shows the nuclear aircraft carrier Nimitz after its conversion into a floating shelter for the homeless.
Michael Dukakis: Well, it's beautiful, Leroy.
Don't forget, in Texas you still can't buy beer on Sunday until after noon. that means if the cowboys have the early game one must plan one's alcohol choices a day in advance.
SO STUPID!
that means if the cowboys have the early game one must plan one's alcohol choices a day in advance.
Yeah, every other week that Romo makes an entire state drink itself silly with frustration.
And drive it to your house in the trunk because the other 49 states haven't proven that people can be responsible enough to get beer from the store to their house without slamming a beer at every intersection.
You can at 11am if you buy it with food at a resturaunt, I think. Standard Libertarian Disclaimer applies.

Los Angeles is a riot zone every weekday from 3 to 7. On Ladies Night they don't even bother with the meat wagons, they just burn the dead in the street.
They are saying that the NBA season is probably going to be canceled. Terrible news for 1000s of illegitimate children, weed dealers and high end stripers across America.
High end stripers?
It ain't the bass itself that's high end, it's the stupid amount of money you spend to catch it that makes it so.
High-end Stryper?
I didn't realize you were a fan of Christian rock.
I bet you didn't know that Christian black metal exists.
What the fuck, squirrels?
Yellow and black spandex will blast your days clean away.
I bet you didn't know that Christian black metal exists. One of those shitty bands' album is called "Invert the Inverted Cross". BOOOOOOOOOO GET OFF THE STAGE

We've seen SouthPark, we know it exists...
I didn't click the link and I'm still going to have nightmares of striped tights and flying bibles.
You guys think I am kidding. I would not want to be a lien holder on the Cheetah Club in Atlanta right now. And I bet the futures market in Chronic is tanking.
Cheetah is free post GT games with ticket stub.
Just an FYI.
Housewives of Atlanta could be in danger of cancellation.
To Hell with Stryper

Just so you know, Warty, I am from South Jersey, and I was part of the scene. The bass player in this band was the bass player in my band.

Alan Woody was your bass player?
You think he looks like Alan Woody from Gov't Mule? Here's a closer look, and a better song.

So hawt.
The NHL came back, unfortunately that means the NBA can too.

Way to go Justin. You think he put our for her? I would have. It is the patriotic thing to do.
He better. Or she'll kick his ass!
She really is the definition of big, bad blond. She works for me in a big way.
Justin Timberlake is a tiny little skinny man, isn't he? I did not know that.
How come sausages on pizza don't look like sausages yet peperoni looks like sliced sausage?

This was the topic of spirited debate between Spinoza and Leibnitz.
I believe the concluded-upon theory was known as, "because you're a fuckhead"
Technically calling Pelosi "Princess Nancy" is not a gaffe.
The progressive bastian known as Minnesota bars Sunday sales.
MN also bans sales after 10 PM and sales of strong beer and wine in grocery stores. When I lived in MN the liquor stores closed at 8PM on weekdays and last call was at 12:45 (all drinks off the table by 1AM!). On Friday/Saturday nights you could leave a bar at 12:50 or so and be at a bar in Hudson WI by 1:15 at the latest. Last call there was 2:30, and it was always a pleasant drive.

Sarcasmic, you disapoint me. During your morning links to the Daily Mail you missed Marisa Miller doing a pinup campaign.
As a general rule I try to only put up morningwood links of womens I have heard of.
And yes, I do live under a rock.
You have never heard of Marisa Miller? I know her from the SI swimsuit issue. She is quite lovely. And she is madly skinnny. You should love her.
I can't remember if I have ever opened a SI. Ever. Not into shmortz.
And yeah she is mad skinny. Doesn't that make you a homosexual pedophile for finding her to be attractive?
No because she has boobs and hips.
Skinny plus boob-job is OK.
Skinny sans silicone is not.
Gotcha.
They are called curves. And she has them. And she is wearing a wonderbra. I am not convinced those might not be real.
She's a Victoria Secret model. That means boob-job.
And a quick google brought back before and after pictures.
Just because it's a depression doesn't mean you have to be depressed!
Booze - part of this complete breakfast.
Speaking of regulation-retardedness.... something ado in Mexico over billionaires and monopolies and WTF people are allowed to call "TV"
The bottom line: Slim is using digital distribution to escape regulation, sparking the ire of Mexican TV broadcasters.
