Ron Paul Scorns the Media for Misrepresenting His Plan to Cut Spending

In a recent editorial for USA Today, Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul clarified his plan to get the federal government out of student loans and derided the media for misrepresenting it:

My "Restore America" budget plan would eliminate five federal departments, including the Department of Education. But the aspect of that department that deals with student loans isn't eliminated — it's simply handled elsewhere in the budget. Yet the many headlines that came out after my interview Sunday on Meet the Press exclaimed that I wanted to "end" or "phase out" all student loans. In the long term — just like Social Security for people under the age of 25 — this is technically true. But to portray my budget plan as immediately getting rid of student loans is simply dishonest.

Paul blames federal student loans for driving up the cost of education to begin with, but sympathizes with students that are "slaves to massive debt simply for trying to get a college education." He believes that federal student loans must ultimately be eliminated, but there has to first be a period of transition. "Our economy is not healthy enough, nor are most Americans in a financial position at the moment, for any of these programs to be significantly altered now," he writes.

He also criticized the media for attacking bold approaches to problems like funding Social Security and Medicare:

Anytime someone dares to seriously address the major problems posed to us by a government program, many in the news media accuse that person of wanting to hurt citizens in a reckless manner….

But constantly frightening Americans anytime someone dares to offer serious solutions is the easiest way to make sure there is never any transition, never any real reform, and never any recovery.

Somebody once made a comment that KMW always has the worst screen caps in attached videos. I've noticed a trend lately where in every screen cap of Nick it looks like he's getting the world's greatest blow-job. Is it The Jacket bringing the pleasure or does Nick honestly have someone hide under that table at all of his appearances? In either case, well done Nick.

Officer, am I free to gambol about plain and forest?

        No, I'm not free to?

Oh. Freedom is more than a political slogan to whitewash capitalist aggression, yonemoto.

Capitalism is a prison. Debt is one of the common holding areas.

      Yes.

      Next question.

      1. Is slavery always moral?   14 years ago

Because that is what debt makes of people. Slaves, as Ron Paul states.

        1. Marshall Gill   14 years ago

Because debt, like slavery, is forced upon people?

One wonders how you have the ability to type, your ignorance and stupidity are so incredibly vast.

But constantly frightening Americans anytime someone dares to offer serious solutions is the easiest way to make sure there is never any transition, never any real reform, and never any recovery.

Yeah, and? Anti-establishment attitudes went out after the 60s. We are the establishment now. Why would we want to reform that?

  8. Colonel_Angus   14 years ago

    "My "Restore America" budget plan"

Why does shit always need to have cute names, they think the population is so retarded that its the only way they will respond? Just call it a fucking "budget plan".

    1. Sparky   14 years ago

But the population IS so retarded that's the only way they'll respond. You can blame them for playing with the cards they've been dealt.

    2. The Population   14 years ago

You know. it'd be nice to restore America, but on the other hand, Romney's got this "Save America" budget plan, and saving America seems like a good idea too. I'm torn...

So, is that, like... a paint job, new chrome, stuff like that?

    4. CE   14 years ago

"Restore America" was too complicated for the media to follow. "9-9-9" is about as complicated as they can understand, or bother to cover.

Are you kidding, he's polling at 5%! Rectal/White Indian is dominating with 65% of likely voters, with Tony pulling 20%, and 5% undecided.

    3. cynical   14 years ago

Don't be too surprised if no one pays much attention, no offense. White Retard has devoured all the trollfeed, leaving a barren wasteland for other trolls in the wake of her gambol. A tragedy of the commons situation, really.

      1. White Indian is like John Galt   14 years ago

  12. Binky   14 years ago

But constantly frightening Americans anytime someone dares to offer serious solutions is the easiest way to make sure there is never any transition, never any real reform, and never any recovery.

I understand Dr Paul's point. However, for accuracy I would change the sentence to something like "constantly frightening Americans anytime someone dares to offer serious solutions is the easiest way to make sure there is a violent transition, partial reform, and ugly recovery."

  13. Slave to solidity   14 years ago

Officer, am I free to gambol about plain and forest; more specifically, the square meter encompassing White Indian's point of contact with plain and/or forest, wherever that may be?

    I am? SWEET.

    1. A Cunning Plan   14 years ago

      W.I.,

It's just Reason that doesn't want you to gambol. Over here on Lew Rockwell, where we will fight against teh evol state violating your rights to gambol. Bring your girlfriend Rather too and we can all gambol together across forest and plain! Let's leave these immoral wastoids with the immoral police state they deserve.

"Our economy is not healthy enough, nor are most Americans in a financial position at the moment, for any of these programs to be significantly altered now," he writes.

You know, if this were anyone other than Ron Paul, then Lew Rockwell would be all over him as a libertarian sellout and KOCHtopus stooge.

    1. JMW   14 years ago

You know, if this were anyone other than Ron Paul, then Lew Rockwell would be all over him as a libertarian sellout and KOCHtopus stooge.

In all seriousness is there anyone at LRC that is worth reading?

They can't all live up to LRC's stereotype, can they?

      1. chris   14 years ago

Anthony Gregory is one of the best libertarian writers out there.

Michael S. Rozeff is a pretty solid financial analyst.

And of course, William Anderson contributes to Reason, as well as Rockwell.

Some of the others, like that Karen from Detroit, can come across as, well, kooky.

        1. JMW   14 years ago

Thank you I'll look into them.

    2. If you ask that question...   14 years ago

...you have already accepted the Officer's Authority.

  17. Steph   14 years ago

The "stop complaining about student loans" argument is always done by older people who didn't have to pay so much for college, went to school at a time with less inflation, could have gotten a decent job without it, didn't have to make debt decisions affecting the next 20 years at age 17/18 and - had they gone to college - would have at least had a chance of getting a job after. We'll stop complaint when you stop complaining that your 401k has disappeared because, after all, that's just betting anyway.

    1. The Art-P.O.G.   14 years ago

Whoa, whoa. Yes, the Baby Boomer generation is bloated with turds and college is ridiculously expensive these days. However, the 'forgive student loan debt' people are still tripping balls.

    2. Dave   14 years ago

No, the "stop complaining about student loans" argument is done by people such as myself who took out large loans and ARE PAYING THEM BACK!!! So STFU and quit asking the government to steal from others to pay your debts!!!

    3. The Thinking Man's NASCAR   14 years ago

The real problem, that no one wants to admit, is that we're sending far too MANY people to college in this nation. You don't need a BA in Literature or Sociology to be an HR manager.

If you can afford a degree and want to study philosophy or history for pleasure, fine. If you want to take a loan to get a degree that will substantially increase your earning power, like a BS in engineering, that's a good choice if you have the aptitude for it. But this ridiculous idea that somehow everyone should go to college, and that the government should underwrite that cost, is hugely destructive. It forces up costs for everyone so that it's hardly even possible to work your way through school unless you're on a merit scholarship, and results in many people going into massive debt for useless degrees that will have no practical benefits in their working life. It's as dumb a policy as I can imagine.

      1. squarooticus   14 years ago

      2. Kristen   14 years ago

I'm pretty sure I'd just have gone to ITT Tech for an Associates in Sys Admin if my now-self was able to speak with my 18-year-old self. A 4-year degree from a highly-rated private university was almost a total waste in my case, given my current career.
