Another Nail in the Coffin of Teabaggers-Are-Racists Trope?

Liberals have long used racism as the explanation for why Republicans and Teabaggers don't appreciate President Obama more. But how then do they explain the vaulting popularity of Herman Cain in the GOP primary? The Wall Street Journal/NBC poll this morning found that:

Fifty-two percent of Republican primary voters view Cain favorably, versus just 6 percent who see him unfavorably. Among Tea Party supporters, his favorable/unfavorable score is 69 percent to 5 percent. And among Republicans who identify themselves as "very conservative," it's 72 percent to 2 percent.

Liberals allegedly believe in science and data. So in the interest of intellectual honesty, can they please drop the notion that the GOP/Tea Party are irredeemably racist and work up some other accusations? If they are caught flat-footed in the event of an Obama vs. Cain matchup, things might get rather boring for those of us in the Fourth Estate.

Now, if they mean he doesn't act black culturally or politically, then what they are saying is anyone who runs for office as a Republican can't really be black culturally or politically, and thus whites voting for him or her isn't proof of non-racism.

    "Black" is really more of a culture than a color (though I'm white so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). How anyone can say Cain, who was born in Memphis, went to an HBCU, and is a Babtist minister in Atlanta, is less black than Obama, whose life story could mostly be featured on SWPL, I don't understand. Unless it's just Team Blue partisanship. I understand they'll say absolutely anything.

Obama has no connection to the typical black American; he grew up overseas and in Hawaii, where being white is a liability.     The other thing about the "Uncle Tom" label is that if you read Uncle Tom's Cabin, Uncle Tom is not a loathsome character at all. He is a totally noble character who saves a white woman from drowning, refuses to whip another slave and is whipped himself for it, never gives up his faith in God and forgives his overseers upon his death. People have turned his name into an epitaph for something that he really wasn't. I bet your typical OWS douche has never read the book and thinks Tom was a black slave trader or something.

I work with a majority of black employees and have asked them what they thought "Uncle Tom " meant, and every single one got the question wrong. Proof that if a lie is repeated often enough people will choose to believe it rather than learn how to think for themselves.

One Klansman attempted to run on the Republican ticket in Louisiana. David Duke was openly repudiated by the national party, and Louisiana Republicans joined Democrats to defeat him in that election. Duke was running against convicted felon Edwin Edwards, which led to the Republican campaign slogan "Vote for the Crook; It's Important".
    
    Democrat senators filibustered 1960s Civil Rights legislation. The other party voted for that legislation in higher percentages the Democrats.

      While useful information for disproving someone who is historically illiterate, the old affiliations of the parties are not very relevant nowadays (notable exception: unions). At the start of the 1960s, the Democratic Party had been the solid home of white Southerners for a century. By the end of the 1960s, white Southerners were leaving the party in droves.
      
      This radical shift in political affiliations is undeniably due to the Democratic Party's embrace of the nascent civil rights movement. If you're going to bring history to account, then the fact that the Democrats literally sacrificed their core constituency in order to pursue civil rights has to count pretty strongly in their favor.
      
      But like I said, this is all mostly irrelevant to modern politics.

They come from a non-research professional degree, they publish shit nobody reads in student-run journals instead of actual peer review, and the field has little in the way of objective references to check work against. And those are the full-time profs, not part time "lecturers" who happen to drop in.

I was an articles editor in law school tasked with selecting pieces, and not only was I overmatched, but I had pressure from other, similarly overmatched editors to make the decisions.

  The problem with 9-9-9 is not that it is a bad idea in theory. The problem is that it gives us a VAT without fully eliminating the income tax. And would thus be horribly abused by Congress. It is a naive plan on his part. But it is not a horrible plan. If it was actually implemented, it would be a huge improvement over what we have.
  
  And yeah, the Tea Party latches onto people from outside of politics. That is because they object to the politics they have now. And who says you have to be a professional politician to be President? That was never a qualification until about 50 years ago. And damned if we haven't had some of the worst politicians in history in that time.
  
  And Cain is a self made man, a no shit engineer, and a real success in the private sector. He has accomplished a hell of a lot more than 99% of the world. How fucking dare you call him a token anything.

And not taxing capital gains and savings interest while taxing consumption would do a tremendous amount to encourage savings and investment and long term growth over short term consumption and asset bubbles.

Here, I'll play devil's advocate for a second and attempt to impose sense on the inevitable liberal claim that the Tea Party is still racist even if TP voters support Cain.

Here goes.

I have met many liberals who believe that Republicans would not have any problem with income transfer and redistribution by the government if the country were entirely white.

They literally think that Republicans would have no problem with the welfare state if all recipients "looked like them".

They are convinced that the real, secret reason people on the right oppose the welfare state is because black people are receiving benefits.

Therefore, opposing the welfare state is evidence of racism. Liking Herman Cain in that context doesn't disprove this racism, because since Cain doesn't require any support from the welfare state at the moment, we're prepared to tolerate him as "one of the good ones".

I know, it's crazy, but I'm trying to put as good a face on it as I can.

Will we see them organizing protests against Romney, the originator of the "Obamacare" model that got them so riled up in the first place? Their opposition to Mitt thus far has been virtually nonexistant, just a few of them complaining on online blogs. Where are the "you lie!" accusations against Romney at the debates? Why isn't Romney shouted down at town halls or the equivalent when he goes to speak?

Why do they demand bigger government to fortify the border and crack down on Mexicans, whose only crime is failing to get proper government authority and paperwork? Seeing as how they claim to be opposed to big government and all.

  I'm for making it easier for immigrants to come to this country legally by streamlining the process. It should be simpler and faster than it is today. However, I am concerned about illegal immigration for national security, public health, and general law enforcement reasons.
  
  While I don't know if we should bother with an official language, I'm not opposed to it. The main reason I prefer teaching English is the simple fact that immigrants that can't speak the language are at a terrible disadvantage. Finding work, obtaining medical assistance, obtaining emergency services, etc? is more difficult if you can't speak the common language. Postponing the learning of English does immigrants no favors ? it hurts them. Why do you want to keep them down? Why do you hate them?(tweak) heh heh

      Obviously markets will bear out that attempting to speak Icelandic or Navajo in NYC is not going to work, and it will be necessary to learn another language likely English. But in areas of the country where it is viable to live your life speaking Spanish, why not let them? Why impose your tongue on them?
      
      From my experience its that a lot of Americans are nativist paranoid assholes who are afraid the Mexicans will be plotting all kinds of nefarious deeds in their secret code language. It simply infuriates them that people can say something without them being able to listen in and understand it.

        In the public sphere, we have a goddam hard enough time understanding each other with one language. Can you imagine if every law, regulation, etc. had to be published in multiple languages? The signal loss in translation would be crippling.
        
        So, sure, speak what you want. But don't expect any slack if you don't speak the native language, whether here, in Europe, or in Asia.

        Zuo, the right has no monopoly on expecting everyone to learn English. I've read a couple of writings by Liberal Jews denouncing Yiddish and Hebrew speaking American Jewish communities that don't teach English to their kids. Alan M. Dershowitz's comments in The Vanishing American Jew are an example.
        
        Personally, I recommend teaching English to one's kids, but I understand the desire to teach one's ancestral language. An English +1 strategy where every American learns English plus 1 ancestral language allows the best of both.

        I seem to recall that India and Pakistan were on the verge of a potential nuclear war because a bunch of suicide-vest attired Urdu- and Kashmiri-speaking militants burst into Parliament with machine guns blazing.
        
        Hardly a picture of stability.
        
        A few years earlier, aggrieved Punjabi-speaking Sikhs assassinated India's Hindi-speaking prime minister to avenge her attack on the Golden Temple.
        
        A few years later, Urdu-speaking Muslims launched an attack against Hindi-speakers in Mumbai.
        
        Language has been a huge issue in India since decolonialization. For example, the anti-Hindi movement in Tamil Nadu. That conflict was resolved pretty well by making English an official language of India.
        
        One need not be fluent in Hindi to do well in India ... but if not Hindi, one damned well better be fluent in English.
        
        In other words, India has a Hindi/English plus one policy on language.

        The problem with this analysis of South Asia is that Hindi and Urdu are the same language, just written with different alphabets.
        There is no need to have an 'official language' law (aside from the fact that the concept doesn't belong on a libertarian blog).
        All immigrants in all countries over the past 4000 years have learned to speak the local language within a generation. Regardless of the presence or absence of welfare.
        I teach sociolinguistics and I can point you to references.
        So it's non-libertarian and completely unnecessary. And probably (really) racist, to boot.

      The problem with pointint to Yugoslavia, Canada or Belgium is that it leaves out Switzerland (4 official languages, and they do it quite well).
      
      That said, while I hate the thought of compelling anyone to do anything, at some point, having to provide a Klingoneese interpreter (check it out!) suggests that a single language for all governmental business sort of makes sense on a practical level.

I'm not saying you want to force government and business to be bilingual, but that often seems to be the position of those that support bilingual or Spanish only classrooms.         I totally agree. I just don't think you should compel them to do so by force of law. IF it is beneficial to learn English (and it is) people will do it themselves. Let the markets work. They will, given due time. But let everybody make their own decision.
        
        As for the legal issues: they would be greatly reduced if the amount of government is lessened. But legal rights exist regardless of the language the perp speaks. I would hope that would still be the case even if the US did have an official state-mandated language?

        Yeah, I tend to agree as well about the legal issues. To that end, getting government out of education altogether would defuse a ton of controversial issues. Issues like religion in school, eco-religion in school, sex education, language choice, gender issues, etc. would be gone. ?Well, I suppose they would still exist, but they would be handled on an individual basis as opposed to a government "one size fits all" mandate.
