Forget the 999 Plan, He's Got a 666 Plan
Bill Kristol reacts to last night's debate:
A third e-mailer Thursday evening, watching the debate, was reminded of Yeats's "The Second Coming:"
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity. There's some truth to that. But I can't help wondering if, in the same poem, Yeats didn't suggest the remedy:
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?Sounds like Chris Christie.
As Jim Poniewozik pointed out, "I think Bill Kristol just endorsed Chris Christie by comparing him to the Antichrist." A lesson for all pundits: If you're going to spout a cliché -- and as great a poem as "The Second Coming" is, quoting it is as clichéd as prefixing a word with "cyber" -- you should think hard about what the words you're using actually mean.

Walker, are you still here? I thought you were on cyberleave.
Bwah ha ha
How many cyberminutes was his cyberhiatus?
If you keep teasing he's going to take his cyberball and go cyberhome.

My ex-wife had the numbers 6-6-5 on her scalp.
My comment was mean to be a reference to an Iron Maiden song.

Just as long as you understand that 665 lives across the street.
Does that make a difference? As long as we have our collar.
Bill Kristol is a neocon warmonger.
At least, he's not funny. Or relevant. Or readable. Or interesting.
Ok, maybe his mommy still loves him.
But I'm really smart and stuff!
you should think hard about what the words you're using actually mean.
Hustle, Walker! You can still catch that turnip truck. Don't let it get away.
I love it when faux media intellectuals screw the pooch like that. And I would think the anti-Christ would be thinner and better looking the Christie. I mean if you are going to be Satan's spawn on earth, you would think you would at least be a good looking guy instead of some fat schlub from Jersey.
Well, Satan is supposed to be the great deceiver. Maybe that's just what he WANTS you to think.
Please allow me to introduce myself I am a man of wealth and taste. Satan has got it going man.
Because everyone expects him to be suave and handsome is reason enough for him not to be.
Maybe so. Although I have to admit it is kind of disappointing to think of the prince of darkness coming as a fat guy. I guess I have read too much Milton.
Romney?
Palin.
Satan would be better liked and have better behaved children, at least in public anyway.
Palin may not be the Antichrist, but she sure does babble on, if you catch my drift.
(Just kidding, Sarah, you know I love you)
This will happen. The debate last night proved it must happen.
38D - The number of the Breast.
Just the one?
Bill Kristol attempts to use a famous poem and misinterprets it and misuses it. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
Maybe the real lesson here is to just ignore Bill Kristol, now and forever. It works for me.
Could you have expected anything more from a political hack masquerading as a public intellectual, and frequent Daily Show foil to the equally vapid Jon Stewart?
Isn't "cyber" a word in and of itself that means to have-a the sexxy over the 'puter? (I believe it is...)
we received this missive from a bright young conservative: "I'm watching my first GOP debate...and WE SOUND LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE!!!!"
For some reason, I don't think the "bright young conservative" was referring to social conservatism, big government crony capitalism and "war without end, Amen" planks of the platform.
I suspect he's parroting David Brooks' longing for "grown-ups".
It's almost as if democratic political systems are meant to have competing/contrasting ideas in the national discourse!
Would somebody please douse Bill Kristol in gassoline. Then the problem of him opening his mouth will take care of itself.
I prefer the 0-0-0 plan. No income tax, no sales tax, and no corporate taxes.
that's the somali plan
So this is a metal thread, then.
Satan Prayer
Speaking of which, I adore the new Opeth album. There, I said it.
I really, really want to like it, but it just sucks too much.
I'm going to wait a few weeks and then give it a bunch more listens in the hope that my first impression was wrong.
Do you really think that it sucks (e.g. that it's poorly executed), or is it just that you don't enjoy this style of music?
(Did you like Damnation?)
Damnation is amazing. Heritage just sounds sloppy to me.
Point taken. But it's sort of a sloppy style of music to begin with. (I'm not sure what I'd call it... some subclass of 70s prog. It reminds me a little of Gentle Giant, for example.)
I like the new Opeth also. But then, I'm an old-school prog fan. I will say that Watershed was an incredible metal-prog hybrid, and probably better overall for that reason. Ghost Reveries is still my favorite.
When I first heard "The Lotus Eater", I thought they'd gone delightfully insane and turned into a full-on old-school prog band. In retrospect, I was more than a little right.
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is Stan; he's got some really great ideas about how we can get this campaign rolling, and I want you all to listen carefully to his input."
Hades Rising
The Cookie Monster's first gig.
Do you think . . . nah.
Obama as Messiah and Christie as Antichrist... Seems like good wordplay to me.
He's not the Messiah; he's a very naughty boy.
Satan: Forget it! I'm calling the attack off!
Hooded Figure: No! Keep your army marching, my Lord. I will get that feeding tube put back in. [turns and walks off]
Satan: How?
Hooded Figure: I will do what we always do: Use the Republicans.
Which of these plans is the pizza deal, again?
Say what you like about Chris Christie, he's got the slow thighs. And that's exactly where Bill Kristol wants to be.
"You have reached the number of the beast. If you have called during business hours, when honest people are at work, then I am sleeping, and do not dare to waken me. If you have called during the witching hour of night, I am busy implanting RFID tags in my followers, so please leave a message and I will swallow your soul as soon as possible. Please leave a message at the tone - [sound of a million lost souls howling in agony.]"
In his next column, he says that Mitt Romney reminds him of a man from Nantucket.
Mitt Romney reminds him of a man from Nantucket.
With a head like a galvanized bucket?
No, with a fully customizable truck kit.
You expect politicians and either their gurus or minions to pay attention to the words they quote? Politicians who, for instance, thought "Born in the USA" was a jingoistic, patriotic anthem?
Rhetorical reasoning in politics today is essentially, "if I make this sound with my mouth, will I get more votes?" If politicians could earn votes with hand-farts, that's all you would see and hear during the debates. Come to think of it...
I agree but I don't think Born in the USA is a good example. It wasn't just politicians who took the song to be a patriotic jingoistic anthem. Most of the public did to. The meaning of art belongs to the observer not the artist. Springsteen may have meant it one way, but the listening public made it otherwise, lyrics be damned.
damned indeed. How many people heard...
Had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fightin' off those Viet Cong.
...and were clueless.
"you should think hard about what the words you're using actually mean"
This goes at least triple for someone who is getting paid to write and publish those words.
As a member of The Tribe, I suspect that Kristol doesn't spend much time worrying about all the bizarre nonsense in Revelations.

Daniels,Ryan, Bush[?!], Christie. Let's see, did I leave anyone out?
Only the most obvious, Bill.
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Actually this is not a reference to the anti-Christ but to the second coming of Christ.
ie the end of the world.
He described Christ as a "rough beast"?
No, the rough beast IS the anti-Christ. The poem is about the second coming of Jesus which is brought about by the appearance of the anti-Christ on Earth.
And yes, this does start the battle for the souls of mankind i.e. the end of the world.
Unlike Christ The Anti-Christ is not born. It is a human possessed by Satan.
I suspect Yeats would have a more traditional understanding of Revelations rather then the Rosemary's Baby version.
The lines about the rough beast is an allusion to the cyclic nature of history which Yeats thought started with the birth of Christ.
The "rough beast" is the new Christ of the new cycle.
As I am sure you can guess Yeats held a dark view of the coming new age...thus the use of rough beast to describe its messiah.
So, to Kristol, Christie is the (Republican) Antichrist that will finally bring about the second coming of the (Democratic) Savior? I thought BOOOOOSH was already the Antichrist. I get so lost about this stuff anymore.
Chris, yeah . . . Revelations seems like a metaphor for death - not actually the end of the world. The end of your world kind of thing so to keep you on track with the other stuff.
ChrisO, is what I meant.
cain says if 10-% good enough for god then 999 ok. well....if god respects 10%, why would cain shortchange us with 9 which is 1 less than perfection. you hear people say "top 10 of...." but never "thetop 9 ...."
is 666....999???
looks like the racist democrats have just started a new site
