Here's Hoping the Creative Class Riots Over The Adderall Shortage

Drugs for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have been used for years by people who do not actually have ADHD to supplement their brain power and as a sort of Viagra for the soul, but it appears those days are nearing their end: The feds have taken notice, and they are not happy! See Amy Alkon's reporting on the DEA-engineered shortage of the ADHD drug Ritalin at pharmacies across the country, and more recently, anecdotes from creative New York types who are bemoaning a shortage of Ritalin's (allegedly) amazing successor drug, Adderall:
"Okay, this is a real problem," began a frenzied email to the [New York Observer]. "Brian," who works at a fashion magazine in Manhattan, was distraught, explaining: "I had a horror of a time filling my last scrip. Duane Reade and CVS are both fucked citywide."
"Brian" was referring to his prescription of Adderall XR. A shortage of Adderall - an amphetamine ostensibly used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder - was recently reported by the Wall Street Journal. A deadstock crisis is notable for the potential to wreck havoc on creative classes, students of all ages (during finals!), and then, of course, people actually prescribed it.
Adderall manufacturer Shire PLC blames the FDA for not boosting supply of amphetamine in December. The FDA has shrugged off responsibility, explaining that they did, in fact, approve the proper amount.
Can you imagine how your life would fall apart if you did not have a cup of Folgers (the only redeeming part of waking up) to get you from your lumpy mattress into your ill-fitting polyester suit down some pot-hole-riddled expressway and into your fluorescent-lit hamster cage? Well, ADHD drugs, (which perfectly healthy people with good insurance can get prescriptions for from just about any general physician, and which poor people can buy from their friends with good insurance plans for really cheap) are basically coffee for people born around the time the Challenger exploded, and also older people who are not scared to pretend to have a disease that no one they know actually has.
But now, thanks to the worriers at the DEA and the FDA, young New Yorkers (and, who knows, young Chicagoans? Young Orlandoans? Young Ann Arborans?) have all been reduced to working their smart phones like junkies:
Calls to other Duane Reades around Manhattan yielded various results: some were "expecting a shipment," others curiously explained that they only carry it on a customer-by-customer basis.
A woman at another location asked how much we needed: "Twenty? Yeah, I have enough." The Duane Reade pharmacist near "Brian's" office explained.
I've heard about people calling multiple general physicians until they find one who will prescribe psychotropics without a pscyhe evaluation (this is called "doctor shopping" and it is for some stupid reason illegal), but having to call multiple pharmacies is just ridiculous. Will the well-educated bougie libertines who comprise the creative class settle for life unaltered? Let's hope not. Their Adderall-inspired contributions to the fields of "getting the best grades," "microblogging," and "partying hard" are invaluable.
ADDENDUM: A reader with ADHD has emailed me to say that the Adderall shortage made her an "absolute wreck for about a week earlier this month." I would like to clarify that I believe there are lots of people who need ADHD drugs to do their jobs at all, and that the FDA and DEA denying actual ADHD sufferers access to their scrips in order to punish people who use it for performance enhancement is especially cruel, tin-eared, and entirely consistent with the government's attitude toward controlled substances.
ADDENDUM 2: Joshua in the comments: "I take Adderall & I'm concerned that Riggs didn't stress enough the freedom angle here." Guilty. So let me now say that it is an issue of personal freedom, and that regardless of why you want them, ADHD drugs should be available over the counter, just like Gatorade.

I guess the FDA felt they had to do something, given all the headlines about the heaps of bodies created by Ritalin and Adderall abuse.
And the South Dakota drug lords.
The FDA administrator's kid can't get Adderall, and he wanted to level the playing field just before AP exams.
Watch for the Steroid Shortage just before varsity basketball tryouts.
"partying hard"
Party Hard
Once again Warty, you fail at the internet.
Party Hard
I once saw Andrew WK. He sweated a lot.
It should be a crime to post that instead of the original.
So not only is the federal government trying to restrict the supply of pain medication, they are now aggressively going after stimulants as well.
What's next? Benzodiazepines? How dare anyone feel less anxious!
Because it's okay to make people with cancer and other terribly painful conditions suffer horribly to inconvenience people trying to get high.
I forgot what I was going to say.
It's all because of the Christfa....Oh look a squirrel!
I forgot about Mad Max. So are you really Mel Gibson, or what?
Neither Mad nor Mel.
Is it really as easy as just asking your Dr. for a prescription? I've always wondered how much better I could work on this kind of stuff, but I don't think I have the nerve to go in and fake a disorder.
I think it's just wrong to fake a disorder. Why can't I just tell my doctor I'm going try some pills?
I think it's just wrong that the government imposes the power of the state in areas that are none of its bidness so people have to 'fake a disorder' to get pills they want.
And, yes, I do think adults should be able to get Percocet over the counter.
I'll tow the party lion on those heroin vending machines with no age restrictions.
You don't have to lie to a vending machine...
WTF is the creative class?
I suppose if you have to ask, you aren't one.
Hence my asking the question.
The First Rule of Creative Class Club...
I am Almanian's shortage of Adderall
That's my line!
Me! Don't you see? I create!
Barton Fink! Barton Fink!
The second best Coen Bros. movie.
People who are allowed to take speed recreationally without getting their dog shot, kids taken away, and going to prison.
Fuck 'em. They can buy allergy meds and cook their own shit.
WTF is the creative class?
The people who are responsible for what is on television these days?
It appears they are addicted to laxatives as well.
The people who are responsible for what is on television these days?
Then why are they using the word "creative?"
So, people aren't just assholes, they are clinically assholes.
Also, there just HAS to have been a murder by now where the defense argument was "I NEEDED MY RITALIN!"
(this is called "doctor shopping" and it is for some stupid reason illegal),
It probably stems from people getting opioids from multiple doctors. I know psychotrops are a different animal, but for a pain doctor it's a big deal to make sure a patient is (a) getting his pain meds from one doctor, and (b)actually taking the meds he's prescribed.
yea, and as i understand it the scenario mentioned was NOT illegal dr. shopping.
illegal dr shopping would be , as u mentioned, getting multiple scripts from different docs for the same condition or the same type of drugs
iow - opioids from one doctor w/o telling him you are already getting them for another condition or the same condition from another doctor
shopping around for doctors you think will better "serve your needs" is not illegal unless it can be shown you have an intent to defraud, etc.
I've been meaning to ask you something. Are you actually a libertarian? And if so, how do you square the non-agression principle with arresting people for victimless crimes (ex: drugs)?
I've addressed this many times
1) I am against the WOD (iow, i think street drugs should be decrim'd/legalized, generally speaking
And as I have explained ad nauseum. I do not enforce federal drug laws, some of which I believe are unconstitutional
State drug laws I believe are not unconstitutional but are BAD BAD BAD POLICY.
enforcing drug laws makes up less than 2% of my enforcement duties (i have run the stats based on arrests/etc. )
i believe that it is entirely honorable for a police officer to be a police officer and yet disagree with some laws. it's part of rule of law. cops don't make bad law. LEGISLATORS do.
but if the only people who could be cops were people who agreed with all laws, nobody could be a cop
frankly, i think the war on domestic violence is more injurious to the average joe than the WOD. i see that repeatedly reinforced.
is it better to have libertarian cops working w/in the system, or the only cops be ideological drug warriors? think about it
with minor misdemeanor drug laws (e.g. marijuana) cops have (in my agency) a lot of discretion. very few even waste their time with charging for a couple of buds, for instance.
i have been cited for bravery, for saving lives running into a burning building and pulling people out, and stuff like that. i believe in what i do. drug enforcement is a TINY part of it.
i guess, ultimately, i'm a pragmatist. i accept that i can disagree with SOME laws, and still be in law enforcement.
i also know that what i do makes society a better place. bringing shitbag rapists, burglars, etc. to justice is a good thing. helping people is a good thing.
That's a whole lot of text just to say, "I don't, I'm a utilitarian". It's cool though, you're in good company. A lot of the smarter utilitarians wind up siding with the libertarians on the vast majority of issues. Tulpa comes to mind. I gotta say, though, that the non-agression principle is kinda non-negotionable to the libertarian P.O.V.
You can still save lives and be a libertarian. I saved several as a lifeguard, and two as a "concerned citizen". I was a fireman as well, but not volunteer (actually for a private company), and, luckily, the whole pulling people out of a burning building scenario never came up. I guess it boils down to how much weight you put on other people's personal sovereignty. I won't let people suffer unneccessarily if I can help it, but I don't feel it's my life's calling. And if I did, I'd be an EMT, not a cop.
I agree with you about the domestic violence bullshit. Get me started on that, and I start to sound like a damn MRA (NTTATWWT). Shit, that's the lever the Supreme Court in Indiana used to declare their cops as untouchable Samurai.
...coffee for people born around the time the Challenger exploded...
Man, you kids really think you invented everything! Ever heard of Bennies and Dexies, a.k.a. "speed"?
Yeah, that was an ugly time, man...

I eagerly await the concern trolls bemoaning Riggs not taking ADHD seriously enough, because their precious snowflake has it and is having a really tough time at school, ok?
Cross post this at one of those insipid parenting sites and they'll just pour in.
ADDENDUM: A reader with ADHD has emailed me to say that the Adderall shortage made her an "absolute wreck for about a week earlier this month." Hahaha!
OK, who is it?
Obviously Dagny.
Really? Who was it having a massive freak out two weeks ago? And is obviously on a huge amount of mood-altering drugs? And who wouldn't able to figure out that Riggs wasn't saying it was a good thing do to her abysmal reading comprehension skills?
Jennifer?
I must have missed it.
I'm guessing rectal but I couldn't resist.
shreek
You know, Max was acting weird last week; except he was more calm than normal.
Tony suddenly went batshit; he started posting attacks right off the bat instead of arguments. I'm putting my money there (ignoring the "her" aspect of it, which a good journalist would use to throw us off the trail).
"Beloved Commenter Dagny" to you.
not me. I don't drink alcohol either
See my addendum. I think adderall is a lot like mari medi. Some people need it for a clinical concern, some people just want safe access to a drug they enjoy.
Riggs! I'm too old for this shit...
I'll bite. I take Adderall & I'm concerned that Riggs didn't stress enough the freedom angle here. Imagine how plentiful and cheap all kinds of drugs would be if the government didn't have their finger in every mother fucking pie.
I have a kind of boring job, and if I didn't take Adderall, I would be much less effective at it. I don't think I have a "disorder," but I don't think that my mind is tooled very well towards the work I do. I don't know what job would be better, so here I stay for the time being, taking my amphetamine.
Hey Joshua, you captured my scenario exactly. Adderall makes me effective at battling the boring while I ponder what else I could or should be doing.
The government has a vested interest in encouraging more attention deficiencies, not in cures.
If this kind of stuff isn't challenged soon, then get ready to ride the fast part of the slippery slope.
Hey, remember that website I sent you $50 to set up, along with a bunch of other people, in 2005 or so, which finally showed up around 2010?
Yeah.
Hey, did you ever claim your account or are you just another shit talker who observed the mess I got myself into (and out of) and now thinks they're being clever?
Yeah.
Let's call them Asperjerks!
I prefer Attention Turkey.
When did we ever get away from Asspies?

You seem ang...has anyone seen that squirrel?
It's not just ADHD/ADD patients that use amphetamines, but narcoleptics as well.
Thanks FDA for incentivizing patients to search for black market stimulants in order to treat their conditions.

GHB actually works a lot better than amphetamines for narcolepsy. Good luck trying to get your doctor to prescribe it though.
GHB actually works a lot better than amphetamines for narcolepsy. Good luck trying to get your doctor to prescribe it though.
Yeah, GHB is the shit for narcolepsy. You don't get it from the pharmacy like all other meds, though. Your doc has to fill out paperwork and you get it directly from the manufacturer, Jazz Pharmaceuticals (I love that name for a pharma company).
The other day I was playing with my Nintendo and I was playing the new Zelda game and I finally got the chicken mask and I like chicken but I don't really like eggs because they're all runny but I do like pancakes and waffles and I like sausage but not bacon because pigs look funny and my friend Steve came by on his bike and asked if I wanted to go to the park but I couldn't because it was supper time and we were having chicken and I like chicken so my mom made rice to go with the chicken and I started eating but then I remembered this dream I had where I was being chased by a giant panda bear and it really scared me but then Scooby Doo showed up and took its mask off and it was really my math teacher underneath...
Sorry, did you say something?
You like me?
I like the way the syrup fits perfectly into the little boxes but I don't like the way it's so hard to spread butter because the butters gets all clumped up in the little boxes and then you get too much butter in each bite and it makes it taste a little funny but I think I just like boxes I had a big box once that I drew on and made into a little fort and I would bring my cat inside and he would lay down in the corner but that didn't leave me much room so I had to throw him out but then he would just keep jumping back in and one time when I tried to throw him out he bit my hand...
No idiot, you like me! Now take this pill, sit in that chair, and write "I accept pancakes and reject waffles" one thousand times.
It's for your own good you ramblecrazy rascal you.
I like pancakes AND waffles. CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!!
I had to cover for you on the radar detector thread, you lazy bastard.

Well played, chap, well played. Perhaps I should just jump in my auto and head to the carpark in order to procure a new mobile phone in order to text with this young misguided lad in order to earn his tacit approval. Sadly, he seems to have an affinity for the Yanks that I can't fully comprehend. In either event, you have clearly bested me in this particular popularity contest.

Vot about me? With the syrup and the butter and the TURKEY BACON.
Oy vey, this conversation is all meshugana.
I can help out with that.
You need to spark more.
Any time I think about how people with "ADHD" must feel I just think about conversations I have with my 10 year old son. The quotes are because I don't believe in "ADHD", I think people who say they have it just lack the willpower to control themselves (NTTATWTT). I'm sure if my son and I went in for diagnosis a doctor would say we both have it but I'm just not into useless drugs.
in college we used the euphemism "motivation" for addy. As in "If only I had some motivation I could get this paper done".
I think you hit some of it spot on.
Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!
Not arguing with the major points of the article, but Ritalin is not coffee.
http://www.ritalindeath.com/Ri.....ffects.htm
Only people who have never used drugs are qualified to make decisions regarding drug policy.
You get the best results when you put the decision making into the hands of people who know nothing of the subject matter and have no stake in the outcome.
Next you'll be saying people own their own bodies and should be free to decide what goes in them.
Jeez!
Took that stuff through high school. Took me from a low-C student to a low-A student in about a year. When I was on it, I didn't really enjoy anything so working on homework gave me about the same enjoyment as playing video games.
The worst part about it was my appetite, though. I tried Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta (basically extended release Ritalin). Couldn't eat anything when I was on it (and Concerta lasts for 12 hours). Had an "ensure" every lunch to at least get some calories, but I had a hard time stopping myself from hurling when I did.
The new wunderdrug that I used for my senior year of high school was "Straterra". It didn't classify as a stimulant, but to be honest I had a hard time telling the difference if I was on or off it. I had to take it every day, or it would lose effect for a week straight. It gave me a strong feeling of nausea every time I took it.
Now I'm working in the real world and I don't take silly pills. I have not noticed any consequences for not taking them. I think the pills are popular because they force children to be identical copies of what a secondary school teacher wants them to be instead of who they really are.
Ensure. Why do i find that really disturbing, in a, let's-destroy-the-joys-of-life-from-cradle-to-grave sort of way.
Healthcare at all costs.
"I think the pills are popular because they force children to be identical copies of what a secondary school teacher wants them to be instead of who they really are."
Well, anything to get through that 20 years of servitude to the pot of gold at the end.
I've had the opposite experience with Adderall (actually the generic -- the bottle just says amphetamine salts on it), but then again I've actually been diagnosed with ADHD after 6 years in therapy. Adderall improved my life drastically -- it made school, and life in general more interesting for me since I was actually able to focus on what people were saying. The effect on my appetite has been minor -- but then again I think I'm on a fairly low dose (15 mg twice a day, non-XR).
We have pretty much identical experiences with this. The only difference is that I have to limit my intake due to abnormally high blood pressure (genetic, my blood work is stellar). I also develop a tolerance far too quickly if I use it daily. So I only take it when I can't muddle through. We even have the same scrip. I'm guessing that it's either the condition or the low dose, but I rarely if ever get speedy off of it. Despite this, my workflow more than doubles and quality is improved.
My son started taking...now I can't remember what...in 8th grade. Turned him from an uncontrollable, D+ pain in the ass into a reasonably-well-behaved A/B student. Grades were mostly a result of "not turning in work"..."I forgot..."
BUT - he mentioned the same thing about appetite. Still taking it (sophomore in HS), but my bet is he dumps it once he graduates. I can't tell anymore when he's taking it and when he's not (used to be REALLY clear). Interesting - seems very much to parallel the experience you had.
I also think you're spot on re: "force children to be identical copies of what a secondary school teacher wants them to be". We chalked it up to, "Well, he's a BOY!" But teh DRUGZZZz do help him focus on and complete homework.
I was never hyperactive, I just war disinterested in most of what the teachers wanted to teach me. The drugs helped in that regard, I guess, as I could just sit down in a free period and power through all the homework I had. I pretty much didn't do any homework at home starting at around 10th grade...besides papers or larger projects I could just knock it all out in a few minutes during homeroom, free periods, and lunch.
I'm still kind of debating on whether I would take the drugs again if I did it all over. On the one hand, the drugs basically turned me into a zombie and my social life suffered as a result. On the other hand, I got very good grades and got into a rather prestigious university I probably would not have been accepted to otherwise because of the drugs.
I never took Adderall until I was out of school. It has only affected my appetite a little bit, and that's OK, because I have a big fat ass.
I've never noticed any mood difference while on the drug - it just sharpens my focus so I'm not constantly SQUIRREL!
I never took any of that stuff when I was in school. When I acted up in class, my parents attributed it to hyperactivity and told my teachers to just paddle it out of me.
Later on, I realized it was just boredom because I was smarter than anyone on the faculty from about 7th grade through my first two years of college. Once I made the connection, I focused my energy on asking questions the teachers couldn't answer and then answering them myself in front of them.
Of course, I turned a coke can into a penis-shaped car for a physics project my senior year...down to the flesh-tone paint, veins, enormous ball-shaped back wheels (and matchbox front wheels) and "Holmes II" written on the side. The teacher was not amused when she realized it a few days later when another teacher (and my basketball coach) pointed it out to her after she had displayed it in the school library.
That addendum is bullshit. Stopping adderall made her an "absolute wreck"? Uhuh, maybe she was just dropping out of her drug-induced mania, normalizing dopamine levels, and as a result her body was screaming for sleep. Stopping adderall leads to what feels like crippling fatigue, but it'll do that in anyone. Suck it up princess.
Full disclosure, I have a squirrel cage of a mind and as such have been labeled ADHD. I don't buy it, but the adderall subscription is handy for making boring engineering calcs more stimulating. I don't ever want to "need" a drug to get by. I think those that freak out about addy withdrawal probably have psychological addiction and strengthen the case for further restriction. That's a bad thing, I like my perfectly legal speed habit just the way it is.
Whatever I think I "need", whether it is food, water, sex, or aderall, Trinity Post vids, or World of Warcraft isn't any of your fucking business.
And if you mean by your "legal speed habit" something like caffiene, that just makes you a prick for thinking YOUR drug choice is acceptable just because a bunch of cocksuckers in some legislative body or some prudish pig agrees with your preferences.
So what you are saying is your drugs are OK? If anyone has different psychopharmicological preferences than you, they are just fucked?
No, I'm saying my drugs are OK for me. I don't condone any federal restrictions on recreational or medical use of any drugs at all.
I'm saying the bitching and moaning about withdrawal effects might give someone the idea that they can tell me what I can and cannot put in my body. We can't regulate away addiction any more than we can regulate away gravity. I don't even think we're arguing here. What on earth did you read that made you think I want more drug regulations?
point taken
My habit is okay but your's is not. Therefore the government will have good reason to regulate it.
Um, perhaps she was more physically addicted to it than you were(are), especially if she's taking it constantly and you're not. Like you're one to judge, the guy who admits to abusing it.
Use != Abuse
In my personal experience, stimulants like adderall have extreme diminishing returns with habitual use or higher doses. I think the model of take XXmg/day everyday just sets people up for withdrawal. However, the medical community tends to be uncomfortable with "take when you need it" prescription. Perhaps it's a control thing.
Funny, as far as internet commenters go, I am in a perfect place to judge.
there are lots of drugs that are routinely prescribed "take as you need them" including opioids, migraine meds, sleeping pills, etc. not sure I agree with you that the med community is uncomfortable with that kind of dosage scheme
For various reasons, take as needed are the instuctions I recieve from my doctor. But she never puts that on the bottle. She's hinted that it's because she's afraid of overzealous drug enforcers.
ok, fair enough. dr's vary. my dr. apparently isn't afraid because she's prescribed such meds to me on that basis, including opioids.
i also see a fair amount of prescriptions in my job and it's not uncommon
i do agree that many dr's and rightly so are scared (to greater or lesser extent) of the DEA and especially in regards to C-II drugs, less so with C-III drugs.
Well, ADHD drugs, ... are basically coffee
Not arguing against the main thrust of the article, but Ritalin is not coffee.
http://www.ritalindeath.com/Ri.....ffects.htm
Man, I thought I was a misanthrope. These federal pigs make me look life Mother Fucking Theresa. It is like if anyone is not suffering, they are gonna get cheezed about it.
You DO kind of look like Mother Fucking Teresa, now that you mention it. Not gonna lie...
This is freaking BS! I live in DC (outside the beltway) and its a royal pain in my ass to get my adderall. It drives me nuts! I can only procure it at one pharmacy between reston & fair lakes in an on-demand fashion (& I'm not about to give that up less they fall short)
The problem is you get 30 doses for 30 days at a time and the next prescription can't be filled until the day after that.
if I don't take it I'll lose my keys 7 times a day...among other things. I'm not so bad off that my life will be wrecked if I don't have it, but it sucks major ass & people in my office & friends ask me if I am taking my meds
The Fleshtones seem appropriate to this post thread
Or my favorite band except for the Ramones
I can't believe that no one is mentioning the most grevious error:
It's "Ann Arborites," not "Ann Arborans."
Annarborptists?
I've been meaning to mention - I can see you're a busy man...
I call them "Metro Douchebag Lefty Assholes", but then I live in Livingston County, so they call me a "hick", soooo...
We just call 'em "whores."
Filling the Rx is a bitch and a half, true. It is kinda fucked how the criteria for controlling/banning a substance is "do people enjoy this drug?". I guess drugs that enhance the lives of nominally healthy people are still taboo, but why?
Supposedly the excuse is that if people like it they'll take too much of it, or under inappropriate circumstances.
contrast with insulin. insulin is over the counter (at least humulin R is in my state) despite being an injectable drug that can kill you VERY easily if you take too much
why?
because it's not "prone to abuse".
Some bodybuilders take it post workout to help with anabolism, but other than that - it's simply not used "off label" let alone for fun
i also think the strength of the old-as-fuck lobby probably has something to do with it too.
or look at tylenol. out of all the intentional suicidal pill taking cases i've been to, the ONLY ones where death was achieved were tylenol ones.
nobody takes APAP for fun, though. so, it's not even RX, let along scheduled
Anyone catch the Frontline last night on the "meth epidemic?" Lots of shots of children's rooms that were taken by the state because the parents used meth, lots of carefully selected (by the frigging sheriffs office) mug shots of people to demonstrate the horrible effects of meth, lots of insinuation that if only the evil drug companies that made cold meds would just stop lobbying against the valiant DEA's efforts to get rid of pseudophederine supplies all together )legitimate uses be damned) then everything would be glorious. The only people they had on at all to question the drug warriors measures were PHARMA reps, that way they could insinuate only profit-driven Scrooges opposed them.
Terrible stuff.

Where was this predicted?
they are right about one thing. high dose/longterm use of meth is amazingly effective at aging/ruining a person's looks. sorry, but that's not hype. it's fact. you should me somebody who has used meth with any frequency for 5 yrs who DOESN'T look like shit. it's rare.
i personally have seen plenty of people in the course of 5 (let alone 10) years radically change their appearance for the worse. this isn't hype or myth. when people get on meth (other than occasional rec use), their bodies waste away. granted, if they'd use clean needles and proper injection technique (needles are OTC here) they'd avoid the abscesses etc.
the WORST part about search warrants in a meth-house/lab are the invariable finds of homemade meth-head pr0n.
otoh, it's hard to stay obese on meth!
sorry, but that's not hype. it's fact. you should me somebody who has used meth with any frequency for 5 yrs who DOESN'T look like shit. it's rare.
Odd. I know 5 regular long-term users, and 3 of them don't look any more worn out than anyone else. The two who do look torn up drink a whole lot more than the others. Maybe it's a combination?
i can just speak to my experience. heck, i've seen many very pretty 18-25 yr old women who within 5 yrs look like dried up hags.
granted, you could argue there's a selection bias in that i notice the ones who look like shit and go "meth-head" whereas the ones who look good don't get assumed to BE a meth-head. i can consider that this bias may affect my apprehension
regardless, i certainly see far more degradation of looks with meth, than i do with abuse (and we are talking abuse. occasional recreational use of any drug rarely has any negative effects) of heroin, alcohol, or pretty much any drug I can think of
the medical literature mentions some possible reasons. for example, meth causes chronic dry mouth, which combined with the general poor hygiene of drug addicts in general, leads to dentistry that would scare a brit!
also, meth - being a form of speed- is like running a motor at max + RPM a lot.; the body simply breaks down because you are talking very out of shape people with their heart rates screaming for hours/days on end.
most of the drug warrior hype is bullshit. both the drug warriors and the drug advocates are prone to exaggeration to help their cause.
the reality is that (imo and ime) meth is a pretty nasty drug, especially beavis and butthead bathtub lab meth (not particularly pure or sterile)
certainly, the hype in general is WAY overblown.
but the looks thing ime (and my experience is pretty extensive with methheads ) really is true ime
Hmm, tough call. Ending the Drug War or an opportunity to fuck with the hyperactive New York Yuppies.
Can libertarianism make an exception on this one?
Compromise: Make Adderall readily available OTC, but only in pharmacies outside of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
New York could go all "I Am Legion" and Will Smith's dog would die.
Legend. If you are going to reference bad movies get the title right.
Legend Starred Tom Cruise.

*sits quietly in corner*
Taking adderall and ritalin makes you retarded. Making kids take it is criminal.
[TRIATHLON REPLYS] We have a prescription for [RITALIN], 30mg morning/20mg noon/10 mg afternoon and We have had no [ZERO] problems attaining it in the [CC] Canadian Confederation Single-Payer System, though to be perfectly honest We never took it as indicated but instead have built up quite the stickpile of [PILLS] medicene in Our cabinet. HERCULE TRIATHLON SAVINIEN
HERCULE! Welcome back, my friend!
I found this to be hilarious.
Okay, this explains way more than HTS intended.
Yes! He's back.
Wait wait. You were examined by a doctor and their solution was...Ritalin?
Did they mention anything about "you are completely off the reservation"?
I would have prescribed Lithium.
I would have prescribed a rather large single dose of lead.
BTW, sorry about the dicktits.
This is particularly despicable, especially to those of us that actually have ADHD and can't function well without it.
The Gummint Says: "Omelets, eggs, collateral damage, etc."
I on the other hand, hope you don't suffer any ill effects as a result of this nonsense. Good luck.
Upon further reflection, I might enjoy watching a creative class riot. I'm trying to imagine what they would do and failing miserably.
The creative class is just a bullshit marketing gimmick by Richard Florida to sell some books.
Stop applauding each other and stare daggers instead?
Whoa, whoa, whoa!! That's like going right to the "Tripple Dog Dare"!!
But those labored hands need a break every so often...
The Mexican mafia is thrilled that the US government is ever valiant in working to increase their market share in the lucrative meth-cooking business.
I would love to have seen the effects of this shortage on my old U of C Finance class. Some people even had the balls to use adderall while simultaneously getting a note from their doctor saying they needed more time on their exams. Bullshit.
"I would like to clarify that I believe there are lots of people who need ADHD drugs..."
I suppose that is true and I guess I sort of believe that too, but as a practical matter I have never knowingly met anyone who fits that description.
I don't think there's a single motherfucker on the face of the planet who NEEDS ADHD drugs.
There are a shitload of us who need ADHD drugs to be as successful as we are though. I probably would have been laid off last year if it hadn't been for taking Adderall. I was a working adult before anybody ever even implied I had ADHD (it's easy to pass for normal if you're smart enough & I never had the "hyperactive" part of the diagnosis).
Once I was diagnosed, I fought with myself regarding both the diagnosis and the treatment. I was a perfect match for the "Predominantly Inattentive" variant of ADHD, but I didn't (and still don't) think it's a disorder. I just have a different mind from the people who are able to listen to a teacher/boss/coworker for more than 15 seconds at a time without being distracted.
It took me a couple of years to actually start taking Adderall on a regular basis, but it has improved my life immensely. I'm the same person, just a lot more on-point when it matters.
I'm the same person, just a lot more on-point when it matters.
No, you aren't. You're a filthy, diseased addict, a disgusting wretch who needs to be put in prison for at least 10 years to reform your deviant ways.
Again, it's like you're describing my experience precisely. Except I did my research and investigated my diagnosis between high school and college. For me it's been long term low dosage use, except for a year of abstinence. Use feels like a double-edged sword at times, I am far more "on point" but life feels somehow flattened and narrowed, and a bit joyless on adderall.
I've always been functional enough to do without, but been leaps and bounds better when on. I wrestle with whether I have a lack of discipline, some kind of "drug-liking", a combination thereof, or neither.
The publicity makes me nervous because, as with every other drug I've seen go by through the years, publicity leads to more restricted access.
It's like tylenol. You can have a headache and still get through the day without it, but it helps. It depends on what you mean by need. A diabetic needs insulin to live, but someone with high blood pressure doesn't need medication to live (just to live longer and better). Nevertheless, you would never say that you didn't need blood pressure medication if you had a condition which it helped.
Actually most diabetics don't need insulin to live. The body does need some insulin, but as long as the pancreas has some functionality, a low-carb diet is much better than insulin injections, allows the pancreas to recover and cells to regain insulin sensitivity.
Good to know. And furthers my point. You would never find an diabetic on insulin who says "I want" to take some insulin. They say "I need" to take some insulin. And no one would fault them for that. It's a double standard imposed by society for anything with a recreational use. Even when we've thrown off most of the brainwashing on the matter, little things like this remain.
Lou Barlow|5.18.11 @ 5:02PM|#
Dinosaur Jr. Lou Barlow?
Or is your comment a joke about J Mascis?
Too bad Adderall is so similar to meth, (dextroamphetamine vs. methamphetamine) otherwise I would make it myself. Well, looks like it's time to go Breaking Bad before I fail my engineering classes.
ADHD drug-free treatment method.
Seriously, I know it's a legitimate condition for some but from what I hear anecdotally about the screening process it seems to me like ADHD has advanced to the class of disease where if you think you've got it, you've got it.
t seems to me like ADHD has advanced to the class of disease where if you think you've got it, you've got it.
That might have been true ten years ago (some states were identifying as many as 15% of people...not realistic). The medical profession has gotten much better about accurate diagnosis with ADHD. These days, most new ADHD diagnoses are legitimate.
No more brain viagra? I guess Uncle Sam just wants to turn everyone into Christian ditch diggers.
You know, I don't recall any riots when caffeine pills were removed from the shelves. As I Google it, I can't even find any record of the event happening, but I could have sworn that there were news items at the time about the Bush administration cracking down, yada yada. This was around my junior year of college, so 2003-2004 IIRC.
Then, the mostly-disgusting "energy drinks" were suddenly popular. Now it's 5 hour energy. I guess Ritalin/Adderall have been upscale/prescription required alternatives the whole time.
I think the American people are really so cowed that it doesn't register as offensive that our government tries to tell us what we can consume in order to stay awake and pay attention. I doubt there will be riots, because the mainstream will just accept that it's "for our own good." Maybe I'm wrong.
When did caffeine pills come off the shelves? I used to pop those things regularly on watch back in 2007 and they came directly from the shelves at Target.
Well, maybe I'm not remembering that correctly, then. Or, it may just have been that Harris Teeter grocery stores in VA stopped stocking them.
Could be regional, I guess. This was in Washington and I haven't needed them since.
caffeine pills are readily available OTC in WA and elsewhere. i bought some the other day
Caffeine pills weren't outlawed, ephedra supplements were.
correct. but that was because congress subverted DSHEA, used bogus AER's etc. regardless, it was only made illegal to MARKET ephedrine as a dietary supplement. it was still legal to buy, possess and USE personally as a dietary supplement.
as a strength athlete, i've used ephedrine/caffeine stacks for at least a decade. safe, legal, and effective.
also, congress was overturned.
btw, DSHEA is a very libertarian piece of legislation.
Joshua in the comments: "I take Adderall & I'm concerned that Riggs didn't stress enough the freedom angle here."
Just a note that the Joshua in the comments is not me.
I never got the chance to get into the cool prescription drugs as a child as i was 5 to 10 years to old before the fad hit.
I don't understand the people who said "Adderall made me a zombie, it wrecked my social life" blah blah blah.
I took it for a while [read the symptom list online and knew what to say to my GP to try it out] and it's amazing stuff. I keep thinking I should go back to it.
You know that little voice in your head that when you're thinking of some work or some activity you could be doing whispers to you, "Damn, that sounds like a giant pain in the ass. I think I'll sit here and talk shit on the internet instead"? Ritalin shuts that voice up. You can build a suspension bridge in the morning and tear it down in the afternoon, all while thinking, "You know what? This is all really no big deal."
I don't understand how that could harm your social life. My social life when I was younger was impaired mostly by thinking, "Adams Morgan sounds like it's really fucking far away and a pain in the ass to get to. I think I'll sit here and watch Friends instead." Ritalin would have helped that a lot, I think.
The other thing about Ritalin is that apparently you can score 5% higher on IQ tests when you're on it.
I don't understand why we don't make taking it mandatory for everyone.
I would compromise my libertarian principles to make a bunch of 90 IQ douchebags that much closer to normal.
Fuck you!
I like being constantly distracted and clinically dumb.
And when the Zombie Apocalypse comes my ADHD addled mind will probably save my ass!!!
Probably because the rate of heart disease would skyrocket if we forced everyone to take uppers constantly.
except by definition, 100 IQ is the average (mean), so you would just be defining average upwards!
I think I enjoy all the drugs my mind produces naturally too much to try and "fix" it.
I could probably write "the novel" if i took Adderall....but the unfinished novel I write in my head every day is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY fucking better.
while lots of people take ritalin and adderall for adhd, it is not its only use. my wife takes ritalin to treat fatigue related to multiple sclerosis. this now explains why when we went to the pharmacy to fill her most recent prescription they didn't have any.
I've considered taking ritalin or adderall, but I don't much like the side effects of stimulants in general. Taking adderall, or any stimulant, everyday for years cannot be good for one's heart. That includes coffee, but it's realtively mild.
Heck, taking a sudafed gives me jitters.
I'm way late to the party, but here goes anyway.
I was guardian of a teenaged girl that was diagnosed with ADHD. She literally could not stand still, read a single page in a book, or comply with any command that was more than one instruction long.
On ritalin, she'd read the newspaper and we'd have long, interesting chats; she completed all her homework and her grades shot up; and she wouldn't have three different TV shows going in three different rooms at the same time. Some people really do need these meds.
That being said, the school system is responsible for 90% of the people taking ADHD drugs even though they don't need them. I have heard from multiple people that their kids would be denied entry into school if they were not medicated. Which means the parents are on the hook for private school because they'd be criminally liable if the kids aren't in school somewhere.
I have heard from multiple people that their kids would be denied entry into school if they were not medicated.
So, you can keep kids out of school for not paying attention to the teacher during class.
But somehow, it's impossible to expell a student for assaulting the other students during recess.
I have heard from multiple people that their kids would be denied entry into school if they were not medicated.
Urban legend. That would be illegal under IDEA.
Cue a "dangerous rise" of meth use in 3...2...1...
I've started lowering my dose and taking less, as well as "stashing" a supply. Keep in mind, there's allways the chance patients on these meds might just have to "taper-down" yourself.
Also, I wouldn't recomend telling your Dr.that you are self-dosing. That has caused me problems in the past. I also agree with how it makes you "off-balance?" when not taken. Happiness, Marriage, Kids, Job, I can totally relate.
I have been on Ritalin for almost 20 years. In high school I was a C student until my senior year when I started taking it. I made honor roll for the first time after that. In college I made Deans List. I am a programmer, a job I love, that I would have never been able to get into, without Ritalin. After a couple of years, all the side effects were gone. My happiness, my marriage, my kids, and my job would all suffer without it. Off of it, I will procrastinate, get bored with everything, irritable, moody.
The key for me was changing the dosage. About 13 years ago, I started taking half the dosage every two hours, rather than a full dose every four hours. It me from getting to up when I first take it and to down when it would start wearing off. My doctors who would often say that I was one of the biggest Ritalin success stories they had, but the sad thing is that I have been afraid to tell them about my changing the dosage in case they would stop prescribing it.
I don't think everyone who takes it, needs it, but as one of those who does need to take it, if this shortage doesn't let up soon, I will go f'n crazy. Luckily for the past 10 years I would take smaller dosage over weekends and evenings, to keep a stash in case something like this happened. Even with rationing and lower doses, I am getting near the end of the my backup supply.
You do realize that a sudden stoppage of Ritalin and Adderall (as well as their generic equivalents) can cause severe depression and mood swings, right? Not just that groggy feeling you might get if you don't have a coffee in the morning.
People who didn't plan and are simply forced to stop cold turkey are likely having serious issues, and you treat it like a joke that people use to just get a boost. pitiful
This is Trite & Moronic, even as satire.
Adderall is essential for many of us w/ rehabilitating P.S.T.D.
I can say, as a 35 yr old man that has been taking adderall for years, whats happening is the "underground" culture, as well as businessmen, lawers, and housewives, buy up pills from people whom have bigger addictions, but sneak their way through dr.'s offices, look on the internet on what symptoms consist, and just tell the Dr! Unfortunately, I live in an enviroment in which I see this everyday! For the few but true people that ACTUALLY benifit from it, are now in an unbalance. I myself was shocked when my pharmasist told me "We will probibly be out of all Adderall next time you come in." WOW!
There's got to be a way to weed out these vultures that sell their script, just so another junkie can be born? Im not too political, but Im wondering, who's to blame?
