Some Lessons Learned From Operation Geronimo
Ron Hart in the Orange County Register:
Among other lessons learned, we need to rethink giving $3.4 billion a year to slippery and untrustworthy governments like Pakistan's.
Osama's crib was less than a mile from Pakistan's equivalent of West Point. He was protected by Pakistani officials for the same reason Elvis was protected by the Memphis police: he was a celeb and a big tipper.
…the Obama doctrine must be, as far as I can tell, that it is OK to bust into a terrorist's home and kill him, but we just cannot waterboard him to get information that can avert future attacks. Interesting how the logic works. It is the same logic applied to being pro-abortion and anti-death penalty, or vice-versa for the GOP.

I don’t get this latest meme; that it is only OK to kill people so long as it isn’t up close and personal. The 1500+ drone strikes were fine even though they probably caused a large amount of non-combatant casualties, but a surgical strike that only killed bad guys is a no-no…
It’s only okay to kill guilty people if you kill a bunch of innocent people along with them.
Exactly. But from far away so you don’t see the collateral damage…
Let’s see, what have we learned? That dimwits who see everything through the prism of a simple-minded ideology rarely take their heads out of their asses long enough to clean the shit of their eyelids? Yeah. Thanks, Nick.
It’s good that you’ve finally learned about yourself, Edward. It’s the first step in what’s going to be a long process for you. But the anti-psychotics will help.
Only if he takes the whole bottle.

Enough about you, Max.
P Brooks! Take care of the inevitable Ron Hart sockpuppets.
How is torturing a helpless and defenseless prisoner that you hold at your mercy the moral or practical equivalent of attacking and killing enemy personnel, holed up in a fortified compound with weapons at the ready, during a military operation?
And what sort of moral or practical equivalency is there between the death penalty and legal abortion? In one instance, the state acts affirmatively to kill a person that it holds in its controlled custody; in the other, the state acquiesces in the private choice of a woman over whether to continue a pregnancy to term. Those are the same?
This claptrap was worthy of special quotation in the nation’s flagship Libertarian organ?
Drink!
Yes, yes. I think I’ll do that.

Science H. Logic, Danny, that was a twist, even for you. Euphemisms like “continue a pregnancy” really get in the way when you attempt to make moral arguments. Well, obviously not for you.
The state a woman acts affirmatively to kill an innocent person that it she holds in its her controlled custody?
Why does it not surprise me that you see no moral difference between an innocent child and someone convicted of a Capital crime?
The abortion question raises a legal argument rather than a moral argument. It may be immoral for the state to use capital punishment. It may be immoral for a woman to have an abortion. But how, from a matter of law and politics, do you equate the two? One is “state action.” The other isn’t (except in the squishy sense that “not making something illegal” functionally “makes it legal”).
(In fairness, I did use the word “moral” in relation to the abortion question, but did so in the sense of “public morality” or legally-enforceable morality, rather than the morality of personal conscience.)
Because to pro-lifers, killing a fetus is equivalent to murder, which is a “public morality” issue.
I understand that, but I don’t see why either side has to be “consistent” by being either pro-life AND anti-death-penalty OR pro-choice AND pro-death-penalty.
One might be consistently on the side of “innocent life” by opposing legal abortion and advocating the death penalty. One might be consistently on the side of limiting government power by opposing the death penalty and simultaneously upholding “a woman’s right to choose.”
One might be consistently on the side of limiting government power by opposing the death penalty and simultaneously upholding “a woman’s right to choose.”
The only real consistency in this is the attack on personal responsibility. Nice try though.
Osama bin Laden’s dead.
No, no, no, no, He’s outside looking in.
Osama bin Laden’s dead.
No, no, no, no, He’s outside looking in.
He’ll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Osama bin Laden. Osama bin Laden.
Hey boys, take me back
I want to ride in Geronimo’s Cadillac.
Epi, you’d better post something stupid and snarky in response to me. I don’t feel assured until your stupidity is laid in opposition, thus confirming my view. Receiving your derision is the only sure sign of being on the right track.
Desperate for attention?
Utterly. Well, more like desperate for guidance. Epi is like “south” on a compass — the surest indicator of north.
a quote to remember
The airliner through the head and the Muslim sharks cartoons were both pretty good. The Statue of Liberty should be crying over the declining circulation of those newspapers she’s hawking
I had to stop looking through the cartoons. They’re all so insipid (I mean, it’s political cartooning; what do I expect?), and on top of that, the ever-present “meeting Satan in hell” was so unoriginal that it hurt.
I didn’t click the link, was there one with Muhammad giving Osama a wedgie?
I stopped after only a few, so…I predict yes. There’s probably one with Obama giving Osama a nuggie too.
John Cox did a couple, the artist from Cox and Forkum, they had some good takes like this one-

Love that wedgie idea, sage.
Bin Laden’s goal was to spark the decline of the US by slowly bleeding it, leading it down the path of bankruptcy through endless war. He always talks about money hin his speeches, always.
Looks like he won.
He was funded entirely by the Chi-Coms, of course.
I think Bin Laden won, until I read posts like The Troother’s.
Nah. The wars aren’t bankrupting us. The entitlement/regulatory state is.
If his plan was to bankrupt the US, he should have moved here and run for the Senate.
I’m sure he would have qualified.
A major part of the wars is an entitlement program for foreigners.
Money’s fungible, bro.
So, the 2 or 3 trillion spent on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Pakistan in the last 10 years has not contributed to our growing impoverishment and insovlency.
Surely the Lion King cartoon, with Obama holding up bin Laden’s head instead of Simba, is hugely RACIST. It’s equating Obama with a baboon, the stupidest, ugliest, smelliest ape of them ALL!
It’s equating Obama with a baboon, the stupidest, ugliest, smelliest ape of them ALL!
I donno … Michael Moore || baboon … itsa tough call.
I’m a little confused by this. Has President Obama ever demured on torture? I know Candidate Obama roundly denounced the waterboarding policies of the evil BusHitlerWarPig administration, but I don’t recall President Obama ever having a bad thing to say about hooking prisoners’ nutsacks up to car batteries to get their names and addresses.
I believe Holder is still conducting a criminal investigation into the CIA interrogators who gave us the leads on Obama’s hideout, if that helps.
No, he isn’t.
On a related matter, he isn’t investigating the interrogators who used torture, either.
You fell into Mr. Dean’s trap.
Even better, Debra Burlingame asked Obama today at ground zero if he could get Holder to drop the CIA prosecutions.

Is the stupid business about the operation’s name being insulting to Indians over yet? Because it’s a high point in PC idiocy.
It’s awesomely dumb. Oh, let’s see, they just killed the most wanted guy in the world, and we’re going to poke our heads up in the midst of that and complain about using Geronimo for the operation name.
I thought their beef was that Geronimo was the codename for bin Laden, not the operation. Still pretty stupid, just a bit less so.
My god, it *was* the operation name. Nevermind, those guys are complete idiots.
Exactly. If they were referring to him as Geronimo, maybe there’s something very small to be vaguely annoyed about. But bitching about it as the operation name when the operation was intended to kill American Enemy #1? I don’t get that.
Personally, I’d have called it Operation Gandhi. Or maybe Operation Peace Prize.
Operation Peace Prize.
I’m speechless. That is amazingly perfect.
Agreed. These occasional diamonds in the comments are why I keep reading here.
Does that mean that I, too, will get a Nobel Peace Prize? That would be cool. Does it come with cash like the real Nobel prizes?
Speaking of awards, will Obama get a Congressional Medal of Honor for killing bin Laden?
Obama will give indians yet another subsidy, and their outrage will immediately cease.
Rob, how to bawls taste?
institutionalized civil war of pressure groups vying for special legislative favors all at the expense of others
I can see a pretty compelling case for the name being a compliment, not some sort of racist insult. Or, God forbid, being entirely fucking irrelevant.
Operation names used to have nothing whatsoever to do with the job, and that seems the case here. It’s truly amazingly stupid to complain about this. Just mindboggling.
Good operation names have nothing to do with the job. But there are morons who use cutesy names that do have something to do with the job, e.g. “Operation Linebacker” in the Gulf War.
For M&A, the smart companies use random names. Though they shouldn’t necessarily be truly random, as that random name generator could spit out something that points a finger right at the acquirer or the target.
Surely they shouted Geronimo! as they exited the choppers.
That’s probably illegal now.
Not necessarily.
The rules are always different for people in the Beltway.
DRINK A FORTY OF CRAZY HORSE!
Is the stupid business about the operation’s name being insulting to Indians over yet? Because it’s a high point in PC idiocy.
I was terribly offended that they used a man’s name. Women are just as capable of wanton slaughter as any man. Shouldn’t it have been more sexually sensitive and been called “Shirley”?
Surely you can’t be serious.
I dunno. If someone called killing the world’s most important criminal Operation Charles Parnell or Operation Eamon de Valera, I think I’d be pretty pissed off.
The Irish have always been compatible with Apaches.
is Obama’s personal bathing of the corpse before disposal.
Corpse?
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The false flag operators must laugh their asses off at how gullible murcan sheople are.
cadaver.
“It is the same logic applied to being pro-abortion and anti-death penalty, or vice-versa for the GOP.”
I know this was sort of addressed earlier, but I don’t get it. In one case, the state is taking action against a convicted man (though I am starting to soften somewhat on this after finding out how often wrongful convictions happen), whereas in the other an individual is taking the life of another who has committed no crime other than being inconveniently conceived (as I see it).
Exactly. It makes no sense. State action against a party adjudged “guilty” compared to private action against what might be argued as life, or potential life, to which no blame can be ascribed.
GO! WHITEY!

He was protected by Pakistani officials for the same reason Elvis was protected by the Memphis police: he was a celeb and a big tipper.
I’m pretty sure he wasn’t tipping $25 million. His comment reflects culture ignorance.
I’m really upset about this whole thing. My next epic, Slappy Shot, will portray OBL as the good hero whacked off (sic) by BHO.
