Immigrants: They're the New Sex Offenders
If you can think of a way to make life difficult for immigrants of all nationalities and statuses, lawful or unlawful, the state legislature is here to help.
The article goes on to detail the seven immigration-busting bills now working their way through the Tennessee statehouse.
Since taking over the Tennessee House, the state's GOP has also addressed pressing issues like banning sharia law, making sure public schools only teach heterosexuality, and requiring presidential candidates to provide a "long-form birth certificate". (The sponsor of that last one later admitted she doesn't actually know what "long-form birth certificate" means.)
It's almost like the state doesn't have a $1 billion budget deficit.

How far is Tennessee from the nation's border?and what does this fact say about the paranoia of the immigrant-haters?
Not to defend this nonsense in any way, but places far from the border (e.g. Chicago) have illegal immigrants.
Those damn puckheads and snowbacks keep creeping across the border!
Maple-sucking puck-slappers.
They're a goddamn menace! They're taking the jobs that American actresses won't do!
Okay, still, look at Tennessee's ranking on the list of estimated illegal immigrants per capita (31 of 43).
So who do you think gets laid more, Balko or o'Keefe? I just saw o'Keefe's new music video where he dances with Mary Landeiu, and there are a lot of sexy babes in that video, so I'll bet o'Keefe gets more bang than Balko because Balko is kind of a baby and whines a whole lot.
You're the worst character ever, Towelie Pat.
Fuck off. Pat played sports in high school.
You're a towel!
I prefer Dundered, King Of All Things Trivial. Oh, and Pat? Luv you Captain Football!
Last ass Balko saw was Andrew Sullivan's.
Yeah, but unlike O'Keefe and you, Balko never has to pay for it.
It is not uncommon that the areas where only very few foreigners live have the deepest fears (because they have not made the real life experience that most foreigners are reasonably normal human idiots, just like themselves)
Instead of bitching about Tennessee why not consider the following facts.
1. Mexico has no problem deporting Guatemalans, Costa Ricans, Cubans and anyone who comes to their country illegally.
2. In Mexico it's illegal for a foreigner to speak out or protest against Mexican politics.
3. In Mexico foreigners can't own property directly, they have to do it through a "fideicomiso."
And for the love of god, stop refering to illegal aliens as immigrants. Immigration is a legal process, you cross through a CHECKPOINT, you show your visa, you are ALLOWED access into a country.
Illegal immigration is breaking and entering and it's a federal crime that the DNC ignores because illegal aliens breed Democrats.
THE CHINESE COME TO BREED: THE FOLLY OF BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP.
http://libertarians4freedom.bl.....right.html
Do you have any idea how much money public schools will save if illegal immigrants must stay 1000 feet away from them?
Groundskeeping and janitorial services would cost more, not less.
Damn, beat me to it.
I was going to say, "those lawns dont mow themselves"
Okay. We'll make an exception for illegal immigrants transported in a locked case in an inaccessible area of the car.
So, business as usual?
Be honest, Mexicans that sneak across the border cost America a lot in free education and free health care. Now every state house has some crank bills that get introduced, but it's dishonest to say Mexicans are not hurting the USA. Public schools are really, really bad, and are not safe because of the Cholo culture. Also if you're not suppose to be here, you're life should not be easy. Raisons are against building a fence on the border, so how do you handle 90 million Mexicans.
How is this an argument against allowing them to work here legally and pay taxes?
They are not fucking citizens idiot, what country in the civilized world lets aliens sneak in and work legally? There isn't one. It's the same with dope, you guys bash America for it's drug laws but it's no different in Europe or Asia. Cocaine is against the law in Japan and they raid drug dealers in Latvia. Want dope to be legal? Then do it through the system. Someone told you that bashing America sounds sophisticated, and if you do it enough it will make up for the fact that you can't get laid and will never be rich.
We used to.
Oooooh, idiot, eh? And where was I bashing America? A few questions:
1) Why do we need to be like other countries? I'm sure you wouldn't like it if we had a social welfare system like European countries.
2) Is it still sneaking in if we let them come here to work?
3) Do you ever criticize your country? Or are you just a pathetic, nationalist fuck that would be screaming U.S.A if we started invading countries just for the hell of it?
4) Why do you think I can't get laid and am not rich?
Be honest, Mexicans that sneak across the border cost America a lot in free education and free health care.
First, Mexicans that sneak across the border cost America as much in free education as Mexicans that are invited across the border, Mexican-Americans born to US citizens, other poor citizens, and in fact every citizen who goes to public school. If you don't believe that the supposed investment of public education is worth the taxpayer money paid for it -- a defensible stance -- then you should be fighting to shut down public education because it is costing America far more than illegal Mexicans consume of it.
Second, the grand total of free health care received by illegal immigrants is capped by the trivial -- at least compared to efforts to reform health insurance to "fix" this problem -- 40 billion dollars that uncompensated care costs each year. That's a paltry 2% of health care expenditures in the US, and health care for illegal immigrants is but a subset of that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.....ealth_care
Eh... not so much, really.
Education - yeah, sure. Then again, it takes something like $15000 a year to send NYC kids to shitty High Schools... so you might as well argue for deporting the city of manhattan as far as it goes. Its not an unpopular idea in much of the country.
Then again, it takes something like $15000 a year to send NYC kids to shitty High Schools... so you might as well argue for deporting the city of manhattan as far as it goes.
I'd be in favor of that.
Free health care to aliens is capped? What the fuck are you talking about? The only reason anybody wants Mexicans to come to the USA is to change the voter landscape. Even if I believed it was 2% that is a huge amount you're asking the healthcare industry to give away. Do you know the what the profit margin is for a hospital chain? And what 2 percent means? Fool
Free health care to illegal aliens is not capped. It just cannot be greater than the total cost of uncompensated health care in the US, which happens to be $40 billion per year.
And since 90% of that is reimbursed, the health care industry -- or, rather, other patients' insurance companies, since that's who it's passed to -- is on the hook for around 0.2% of total health care spending.
You're spouting government shit, nothing is capped! Hector cuts his leg on the border fence and limps into the Tucson ER, he gets stitched up and often times there is someone from a Spanish speaking charity in the hospital helping him fill out forms and telling him what to say. You guys are fools, no sense of where things come from, and how wealth is earned. Your the same fools that get mad because you can't download free music and movies or whatever. How is stealing someone elses hard earned money or music or whatever libertarian? It's not and Radley Balko is making a living not as a libertarian, but as a so called left-libertarian that bashes Republicans so he can go to liberal parties and hold hands with fat chicks.
You're spouting government shit, nothing is capped!
All the Hectors in all the ERs in all the country cost no more than -- and actually significantly less than -- $40 billion.
It may be de jure unlimited, but de facto it is has a maximum, and we know what it is, and it isn't that much. The mere fact that these costs exist is not an argument against freer migration -- only part of the balance sheet on the negative side.
Actually, MikeP, Mexicans that sneak across the border cost far more. Besides the measurable costs, there is also a tremendous social cost when one society begins to supplant another. Not to mention the fact that it's impossible to do responsible planning for a city's budget and resources when an unknown number of people are crossing the border every year.
Interestingly, no one on the anti-immigrant side counts the added productivity of the illegal immigrants as well as the gains from the higher valued work done by Americans now freed from doing the lower valued now done by immigrants.
These benefits pretty much swamp all the fiscal budget effects that are invariably trotted out.
And, of course, none of this even begins to count the gains to the immigrants themselves due to immigration, which are truly truly massive.
LOL!!!
The "benefit" to Americans who are now freed from doing the lower valued work done by immigrants??
There's a word for that benefit. It's called "unemployment". It's now officially running at 9.2% (and unofficially much higher).
Unemployment's high because of illegal immigration? That's an interesting theory... similar to protectionists who argue the Chinese are stealing our jobs, but equally as economically ignant.
The fact that illegal immigrants get free medical in the ER is an argument against the welfare state, not immigration.
In other words, dey tuk ur jawbs?
Wow, Swedish libertarian, you got me there. What a genius: Simply asking a question in a mocking tone wins the argument hands down!
I shouldn't feed the trolls, but I can't help pointing out that they don't take MY jobs. I make far more than minimum wage. They take the jobs from poorer Americans, the ones who normally have too little leisure time to post comments at Reason.com.
Maybe it's my European perspective, but I have trouble feeling more sorry for American workers than, for example, Mexican workers.
Amen brother, these kids are fools.
Americans were not freed from 'lower-valued' work but ran from it.
"Actually, MikeP, Mexicans that sneak across the border cost far more. Besides the measurable costs, there is also a tremendous social cost when one society begins to supplant another."
Cite or I call bullshit... and make sure that when you do, you cite something that contrasts the pros and cons, not just the costs.
Cite what motherfucker? Go to any state prison and ask for the motherfucking racial makeup of the prison. Go to any courthouse in the country and watch them adjudicate the Spanish cases. You're a fucking mainstream media brainwashed idiot. Cite or call bullshit? It's like if CBS news or Vanity fair hasn't done a study it doesn't really mean anything to you.
PDK, you're so full of shit. You rail against illegal immigration, yet you have no idea whether they cost more than the economic benefits they generate.
In the end, all you can cite is a 'study' done by, of all groups, CIS. The study says nothing about how much wealth is generated by illegals and therefore you failed.
Here's a clue: there have been no major studies performed and made public that weigh the costs against the benefits of illegal immigration. Therefore, any attempt by you suggest illegal immigrants come here and rape us economically are pure bullshit.
Also, for anyone want who wants to know about CIS, you merely need to visit their website's main page.
http://www.cis.org/
The group isn't only against illegal immigration, but any and all forms of immigration. They're nativist protectionists of the worst kind.
Sez the Reason subscriber. Pot, kettle on line 2!
I just realized the citation was by Slappy. Which makes your response all the worse. Just a bunch of hyperbole with no substance. You can't cite shit, and therefore are full of it.
Consider it cited.
See my response to PDK.
MWG,
Of course you are going to attack the bias of those doing the research. That's all anyone does with these studies. The problem is, for every study that goes one way, you can find one that goes another. Here is a good example side by side:
http://aclu.procon.org/view.an.....nID=000713
But even if illegal immigration was a plus to the economy, you have to look beyond the simple economy. The reality is that the whole SW USA is in the middle of a very serious fresh water crisis. An ever rising population simply is going to do more harm than good in the long run. One truth that both sides of the immigration debate can agree on is that the United States population growth rate would be almost a net zero without immigration. Largely because of immigration, it is rising quickly.
JR,
Thanks for the back and forth. You are correct that there are, in fact numerous studies that contradict each other, which is why I asked for a citation earlier. The fact of the matter is that there are no published mainstream studies that run a pro/con analysis on illegal immigration.
Citing the CIS (as slappy did) is a bit like citing the KKK on whether or not racial mixing is good or bad.
I live in AZ, but don't know much about the 'fresh water crisis'. I can imagine, however, that water is highly subsidized in this part of the country and believe that your argument should be against that, and not immigration.
People, when faced with he full costs of their decisions, be it where to live, education, how many children to have, etc. make different decision than when those decisions are subsidized... and that goes for immigrants as well.
As a libertarian I'm for free trade in goods and services, and I see no reason why human migration should be an exception to the basic laws of economics either.
MWR wrote: I can imagine, however, that water is highly subsidized in this part of the country and believe that your argument should be against that, and not immigration.
I have no idea if the water is subsidized but whether or no, the water tables are still already dangerously low, while the population keeps rising. This is a problem of people in general, but immigration is exacerbating the problem.
As a libertarian I'm for free trade in goods and services, and I see no reason why human migration should be an exception to the basic laws of economics either.
I am free trade too, but you are assuming that people from one culture are perfectly interchangeable with those from another culture, like nuts and bolts of the same size. I do not.
Moreover, I see a corrupt country (like Mexico) artificially keeping it's system afloat because it keeps exporting its disaffected people to the United States and enjoying the remittances instead of fixing problems at home.
"I have no idea if the water is subsidized but whether or no, the water tables are still already dangerously low, while the population keeps rising. This is a problem of people in general, but immigration is exacerbating the problem."
Again, people should have to bear the full cost of their decisions... and that goes for immigrants as well. If people (be they poor Mexicans, wealthy Canadian retirees, or US citizens) want to move to AZ they should have to pay the full cost for the resources they use.
"I am free trade too, but you are assuming that people from one culture are perfectly interchangeable with those from another culture, like nuts and bolts of the same size. I do not."
I assume nothing of the sort (though I'd be interested to hear what your definition of US culture is). The fact of the matter is we trade with countless countries in products that go beyond mere nuts and bolts.
"Moreover, I see a corrupt country (like Mexico) artificially keeping it's system afloat because it keeps exporting its disaffected people to the United States and enjoying the remittances instead of fixing problems at home."
This argument is similar to those that argue the Chinese are hurting us by keeping their currency artificially low. In the end they're subsidizing our own consumption and spending. The same goes for the Mex. govt. and 'sending' us cheap labor.
But...but...TEAM RED is better fiscally than TEAM BLUE!!! We should support these people and their policies in the hope that they'll throw us a bone and cut spending by .5%!
Don't let teh perfect be the enemy of teh good!!!
I see I've been replaced by a strawman.
Of course this is based on the rather flimsy assumption that TEAM BLUE!!! is better on immigration than TEAM RED!!!
Team Blue is to immigration as Team Red is to small government.
Who was the last Preisdent that offered large scale amnesty?
Bush
Well, he tried to, at least. So did the last Republican nominee for President.
Does the DREAM Act count? The CBO estimated 1.1 million would get amnesty and conservative anti-immigrant groups estimated 2.2 million would.
Calling the DREAM act large scale amnesty is much like calling Bush's proposed Social Security changes "massive reform".
At best both proposals played around the edges and neither had a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding.
When I first saw the list of idiotic bills proposed I thought it wax Tex, not Tenn. But the deficit was too low.
You can LEARN heterosexuality!
Yeah, that was a good one. They're too stupid to realize they just handed a ready-made excuse to every 15 year old couple that decides to have sex. "We were only doing what they taught us in school."
"I LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU, DAD!"
Showing your age SF. Yeah, I remember that commercial.
Ah, but it's on Youtube.
"No, we are not homosexual, but we are willing to learn." "Yeah, could they send us someplace special."
"Oh, it's not the speed really so much, I just wish I hadn't drunk all that cough syrup this morning."
"I bet no one has ever given you the Aunt Jemima treatment."
"Bhaahrmeee training, sir!"
And I wondered if anyone would appreciate that reference!
I keep trying, several times a week. I think I'm getting better, my girlfriend does too, but my boyfriend? not so much. I think he's just jealous.
It was the homework I always looked forward to.
Sure, until I learned heterosexualaity I was only autosexual...still am from time to time.
I used to be vegesexual, but I've learned better.
Which was better, the cucumber or the squash?
Couldn't resist.
Carrots. They're the kinkiest.
Aaahhhh The carrots. Of course!
This deserves this mention =

I didn't know bringing a penis and a vagina together was so complex that it required book-learnin' to do properly.
I'm reminded of a scene from the movie Coal Miner's Daugher where Loretta Lynn has just married Doolittle but, being only about 14 and knowing nothing of sex, rebuffs his sexual advances. He buys her a book that explains things.
Laws solve everything. Don't you guys know that? This country used to have a drug problem. Then, they enacted laws against drugs, and they completely solved the problem.

It appears we have reached the point that we know have sockpuppets in real life too. At least, I'd prefer that was the case...
""It appears we have reached the point that we know have sockpuppets in real life too""
For me to poop on.
Well, its Mother Jones busting on a conservative, so ordinarily I would be skeptical.
But its a Texas state rep, so I find it totally plausible.
Yeah, I was pretty skeptical based on the source. But the accusation is so ridiculous that they couldn't make it up and get away with it. The only misinterpretation I can imagine is that was a super sarcastic comment where the sarcasm was ignored.

I really, really dislike all the Obama birth certificate brouhaha because it's entirely fucking beside the point when his agenda is 98% shared by Republicans who occasionally bicker about minor details.
They are just pissed that's it's not a republican with that agenda.
Remember that lady that said drill baby drill? You laughed at her and now you have to walk to buy your dope because you can't afford gas. Hehe!
Dude, I'm in NYC, I get my dope delivered from a guy that rides a bike.
Total volume of oil estimated in ANWR: around 10 billion barrels
Consumption of oil by the United States: around 20 million barrels/day
That is around 500 days worth of oil. Mind you, oil probably cannot be extracted that quickly from ANWR. Drilling in Alaska isn't free either, nor is transporting the oil.
Gas is currently around $3.89/gallon nationally, while crude is around $2.65/gallon and the average tax is $0.48/gallon. That leaves $0.76/gallon for refining costs.
Let's say ANWR could provide 1/4 of our daily supply at $1.00/gallon crude. Then the price of gas would be around $3.48, for a savings of $0.41 or 11%. Assuming all of this is even remotely accurate, that savings could be sustained (at current levels of worldwide and domestic consumption and current levels of foreign production) for 5.5 years before all of the oil would be extracted.
That's not something to discount out of hand, but it's certainly no miracle or long-term solution.
Further research seems to indicate that my assumptions are overly optimistic, too. It is more likely that ANWR could provide around 1 million barrels/day at peak, for around 25 years, but it would take 5-10 years before a single gallon was produced.
There's no guarantee that the crude would be any cheaper than the foreign product, either. The cost of transporting crude thousands of miles by ship is actually very small (on the order of pennies per gallon for the whole trip).
All that being said, I'm definitely in favor of the Federal government leasing the mineral rights to the highest bidder, including environmental liability (it is a national park, after all). I'm just being realistic about the benefit (not much).
I really, really dislike all the Obama birth certificate brouhaha
I think its great entertainment. And a fine example of people being right for the wrong reason.
Is Obama an illegitimate President who should be removed from office? Yes, but not because of where he was born. Because he has serially violated the Constitution.
It's also fairly irrelevant to learn whether a president is the pawn of a nefarious foreign power more than halfway through his term of office. If you can't tell a spy sent to deliberately destroy America from the typical dipshit politician who accidentally does it, your society has much bigger problems.
(The sponsor of that last one later admitted she doesn't actually know what "long-form birth certificate" means.)
It's a shoulder thing that goes up.

Apparently neither does Bill Oreilly, Chris Matthews and anybody on MSNBC, Jay Carney, Jay Leno, you name em, they don't know either. I think the only person on TV everyday that knows may be Donald Trump.
You know, I've been harping on this but I really would like to know, have any of the commenters, or do any of you know anyonw who has, applied for a birth certificate certificate lately?
If so, has anyone gotten a long form birth certificate?
ANAICT, the "long form birth certificate" is a relic of the age of typewriters and stenographers. No state issues them any more.
If I am in error on this anyone who can correct me is welcome to do so.
When I applied for my birth certificate from the State of hawaii in 2001 they sent me one that looks just like the one that the Obama team posted on line. At the bottom there is language to the effect that this document is all the evidence you'll ever get from us that you wer born in Hawaii and this thing will stand up in any court in these here United States.
So one of the things that I'm finding really stupid is that these birthers are asking for something that doesn't even exist anymore.
I'm a lifelong Tennessean.
True story:
I had to secure a death certificate recently, and talked to my local county record keepers. I gave them the name, not a common one in these parts, and their index didn't contain it. The only one with that name they had was in a rural county at the other end of the state.
I got online and secured the proper certificate from a private service within four days. The county goobs I was unfortunate enough to deal with weren't able to conceive the notion that their record could be wrong.
you should have asked them for to file a 27B-6
Again, no one seems to be able to answer my question.
Is there any such thing as a "long form birth certificate" issued by any American State or any Canadian Province in the age of digitized records?
Until I get an answer to the contrary, the answer is NO. If there is a hit and runner who can contradict me, I will stand corrected.
But until then, I will stand by my belief that, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE".
The "long form birth certificate" is now as much a staple of conspiracy theory as the man on the grassy knoll and the shooter hidden in the storm sewer and that AIDS is a CIA plot to destroy the black man. Oh, and a paper fire isn't hot enough to melt steel.
Until I get an answer to the contrary, the answer is NO. If there is a hit and runner who can contradict me, I will stand corrected.
In South Carolina, where I was born, and you can get both short and long forms:

I still have my own personal copy of my long form birth certificate, although the copy was made in 1977 and is getting a bit fragile by now.

See, this pisses me off. I love Nashville but the social cons farking ruin it sometimes.
I grew up in Boston in the Cambridge area and the leftists there were also fucking horrible. Have you ever listened to a liberal lesbian roman catholic spout off hypocritically? Good times.
I'm not sure what's worse here though. The social cons in Nashville are for the most part a circus sideshow and we pretty much ignore them most of the time, but they do sure seem to make the news a lot.

Exactly! Why do you think they go off on these bizarre tangents? Why do you suppose the budget debate became centered on Planned Parenthood and abortion? Because that's the most important issue? Don't make me laugh.
It's a red herring to distract the masses. While Team Red and Team Blue were distracted over a pointless abortion debate, team big government passed a budget with an obscene 1.5 trillion deficit. They didn't even have to debate it.
And their idiot base supporters each went home fired up about how the other team sux. Team blue is of the opinion that the Republicans managed to rape old ladies and leave them for dead on the side of the road with a budget that didn't cut a single thing from the President's budget (for any value of "single thing" that is at all meaningful) Team Red is convinced that their guy went to the mat for cuts and fought the good fight on abortion. What dopes...
I really don't want public schools to be teaching either heterosexuality or homosexuality. I just want them to teach straight science, straight math, straight history, and such. Unfortunately I don't think such a thing as straight english exists so I will give a pass on gay english class. Reading Shakespeare shit really did make me feel like a dickless pussy.
Are you kidding? You need to read a good annotated version of Romeo and Juliet - chock full of some of the randiest language available in Elizabethan England. And it weren't gay.
I don't think it's possible to run public schools well. The incentivization structures are not present.
Actually, if the state has a 1 billion deficit, then cutting education costs by keeping out students who AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE COUNTRY IN THE FIRST PLACE, seems like a pretty good idea.
I also don't see what's a problem with drivers test in English. After all, road signs are in English aren't they?
