Dave Weigel: Why do conservatives hate trains so much?
"You need to distinguish between Republicans and conservatives and libertarians when you look at this," says William Lind, the director of the American Conservative Center for Public Transportation. "It's the libertarians who push this crap."
"Conservatives used to be in favor of a civilized way of doing things," says Lind. "Board a train and you don't have the TSA groping you. If you think our greatest vulnerability is a dependence on foreign oil, here's a way to get around that can run on coal or electrified rails."
Fuck David Whygull.
This isn't Daily Kos. First, we succinctly state why that person is a dunderhead. Then we curse their existence.
You may want to rethink that.
Okay, unfuck him!
If you think our greatest vulnerability is a dependence on foreign oil, here's a way to get around that can run on coal or electrified rails.
Or we could, I don't know, open up ANWR or the Gulf (like the judge declared we should) for drilling.
"Board a train and you don't have the TSA groping you." So the sollution is to ride a train rather than do something about TSA groping people? Is William Lind retarded?
Yup.
That argument is invalid. The reason TSA isn't in full-grope mode on trains is that passenger rail (other than the strictly local variety in some cities) is such a low percentage of the traveling population to make it not worth their while. If rail became a major mode of transporting people, TSA would be feeling train travelers up in no time.
This is akin to bragging that Mac OS is immune to viruses. Ignoring the fact that the market share is so low as to make it not worth the trouble.
Nice analogy.
And the fact that OS X is not immune to viruses.
The day they switched to Intel processors is the day the Mac addict inside me died.
Though not immune, I bet you can't point out a true virus in the wild (as in a program that enters your computer, activates and spreads itself without any user okay to do so).
Trojans? Sure. But no viri yet.
Perhaps this might have something to do with it.
http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/for.....59127.aspx
Of course, it is also rather difficult to ram a train into the 60th floor of a building in lower Manhattan.
Not if you put rockets on the back.
Or have a microwave emitter on the train that somehow vaporizes water 50 feet below without cooking the people in the train.
Not if you put rockets on the back.
Didn't Mythbusters do that one?
Yeah, they signed an R&D contract with DARPA in March 2001.
They will be feeling up people everywhere just as soon as terrorists start bombing commuter trains, malls,
sporting events, theaters, tea party and union rallies, and everywhere else people gather. Airplanes are very hardened targets now so any terrorists around with brains will migrate to softer targets. Question: why haven't they already if, as some fear, they are everywhere hiding in the American Muslim community?
Let's ask the real question: Why does Dave Weigel suck so much?
"Board a train and you don't have the TSA groping you."
I believe this already false. So what's your actual argument then Mr. Conservative?
How many times do I have to remind everyone? Trains are where murders always have to be solved by the passengers before the next stop, which the engine is often barreling toward at uncontrolled speeds.
That's why conservatives hate trains. They've seen the movies.
Also, Phantom Train and Snakes on a Train
Easily remedied. The TSA can place on each train a Belgian detective.
Excuse me, is that shoe polish behind your ear?
Silver Streak?
why do statists love choo-choos so much?
I think George Will already wrote that piece, so this is Weigel's "clever" rebuttal. Obviously, the quotes indicate that clever=dumbass.
You can more aptly control where it goes and restrict travel when the time comes?
Board a train and you don't have the TSA groping you.
There's a lie, right there. The TSA might actually be worse on trains, since I understand they not only search when you board, they search after you leave the train.
And when your Chicago to New York route stops in Buffalo, the Border Patrol comes in and demands ID from everyone on board.
Fucking Dave Weigel, how does he [get] work?
Guess...
The great thing about being a reporter is you can always find some idiot who'll give you a quote to back up whatever premise/preconceived conclusion you're pushing in your piece.
Need a "conservative" who backs choo-choo subsidies? Yeah. I can find that.
Need a "liberal" who thinks bombing A-rab civilians is cool? Yeah. Got one o' them, too.
Need a self-described libertarian who thinks we don't spend enough on "x" government program, or that the First Amendment goes too far in situation "y"? I guaran-damn-tee you I can dig one up and churn out 12 column inches before lunch.
"See, Madge, see!!! Even the damn libbytarians think the ACLU should shut the fuck up! Educate yourself, bitch!"
But you know what I really love? That I'm not two rows of cubicles over, in the Sports Department, answering Jim Tressel calls all morning. (That guy will do anything to keep attention focused on the football program and away from basketball.)
Are you as sick as I am of Gus Johnson calling John Diebler "John Threebler"?
"Ya know, a lot of people call him Threebler!"
No they fucking don't.
yep. with trains TSA gropes you after you arrive at your destination.
http://gizmodo.com/#!5768805/tsa-harasses-9+yo-boy-and-other-train-passengers-after-their-trip
Check my link above, Amtrak wasn't happy about it.
Everybody needs a villain.
Private trains are awesome. Just need to get rid of the ones run by the state.
Fun fact:
There are people that actually own their own private rail cars
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....06333.html
Do we have any private passenger trains in America?
In the real world, libertarians aren't cheering for high speed rail but rather trying to stop it from being built.
I would rather be on a boat.
Fire at a Pennsylvania farm house kills seven children.
The one child who survived could become the Batman of firefighters.
Someone explain why a woman would run a mile to get her husband instead of getting the kids out first?
I kinda thought the same thing. I mean even at a dead sprint that's about 6 minutes to get to him, plus another minute or two to get back home.
Maybe it's the cynic in me, but the fact that neither of these parents had very good alibis struck me as kind of wrong too.
Because she's a good mother.
LOL!
White House to liberal-minded Muslims: drop dead
http://dailycaller.com/2011/03.....drop-dead/
Weak.
Not inviting to conferences == drop dead?
Yes. What the hell yes can they do? Shoot them? Why wouldn't they invite them to the conferences?
What else could they do to diss liberal Muslims? Well, they could hold hearings on the responsibility (unique among religions) of Muslims to keep tabs on their coreligionists for the feds.
But it looks like someone else in DC already scooped them on that idea.
Yeah. Peter King, white terror supporter.
king was an IRA supporter so yes.
According to Peter King, if you're a white Christian who bombs innocent bystanders, you're a freedom fighter. If your skin is brown and you're not a Christian, you're a murderer for committing the same act.
One Wisconsin Democrat says?if people don't like paying union dues that are used to support Dem candidates, they can always get another job.
http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler.....other-job/
Please tell me someone pointed out that taxpayers don't have that option with public sector unions.
One would suppose that the opposite would be true, also.
If unions don't like representing workers unless the workers are forced to fund them, the union can always leave.
The great public opinion failure here is the failure to differentiate between private workers and employers working privately and voluntarily to (ideally) arrive at common ground to mutual benefit, and public unions who use coercive means to extort their pay and benefits from taxpayers who have no say in the matter, and whose dues are extorted from their own members (again financed by the taxpayers) to purchase political pull from politicians (mostly Democrats) who in turn pass favorable (to unions) legislation that protects and perpetuates the scam. Private unions have no such power. Public unions are legalized theft. They are a tiny minority with political pull. In the end, the biggest gang (the private taxpayers) will win; not, unfortunately, through reason, but by force.
The great public opinion failure here is the failure to differentiate between private workers and employers working privately and voluntarily
If you think private employers negotiate with unions voluntarily, you have a profound misunderstanding.
They negotiate with them because they are required to, by law.
And what happens if their negotiating tactic is to say, "You're fired."?
Someone should explain to him that you have to actually control the government to benefit from a spoils system.
Tom Corbett proposes 50% cut in higher ed funding. State universities despondent that they will have to make sacrifices like everyone else.
I guess I should point out that a 50% cut in state appropriations is only about a 4% cut in the actual operating budget of Pitt and Penn State. Most of their money comes from other sources.
Got a email from my alma matar PITT last night. They say they are being "targeted with extreme, severe and disproportionate cuts to their already comparatively low-level of state support."
Whiney ass bitches. Guess they'll have to put off building some new building or such.
It's mean-spirited to force kids to sleep in 20-year-old dorms.
It's mean-spirited to force kids to sleep in 20-year-old dorms.
I know you're being snarky, but it made me think. Some of the dorms at the U. where I went to school are now more than 100 years old. A lot of the kids wanted to get those, because they're cooler than the ones built in the 1960s and 70s.
Heck, it's a huge honor to get to live in one of the rooms on "The Lawn" at UVA - and Thos. Jefferson himself designed them.
(dons Cliff Claven hat)
Universities are complete whores for money. Well-established fact.
(removes hat)
Dude, my university can (and has) manage to get people to give them 1.6 billion dollars in 5 years. That wasn't enough for the richest public university in the country. So now they're trying to raise 3 billion. And you know what? They'll get it, and tuition will go up every single year the whole time.
But when we cheered for "everything within the State, nothing outside the State," we thought that meant we'd get all the money we wanted!! This isn't fair!!! [stalks off sobbing...]
The problem recently with higher (public) ed is that they haven't capped the number of students accepted into the university. The freshmen class continues to grow, and therefore more teachers are needed, so tuition rates need to go up, which means more facilities and amenities need to be built so that students feel they are getting something for their money. And it goes on and on like that.
Better to just start telling kids now: you know what, you might not get into college. So either work hard and challenge yourself in school, or start pursuing other courses that will prepare you for a trade school or something else.
What is really funny is that Pitt was a private school until the 1960's when they decided to jump on the government gravy train. Looks like they got left at the station this time.
Perhaps I'm missing something in your analysis, but doesn't a larger freshman class automatically mean more tuition money coming in (even without a rate increase) with which to hire more instructors?
The larger freshmen class usually means needing more instructors to meet class-size standards to stay an accredited/certified school. And in better times "more instructors" meant more tenure-track professors instead of just adjuncts who could be paid a stipend. So because the full-time tenured professors have massive salaries and actually teach less classes than adjuncts because they also have to churn out research and papers, the university overspent and received less, so tuition rates have to go up to meet the new salary requirements.
But also, you are correct about the administrative positions.
Well, these aren't better times. Few universities are offering tenure track positions except to replace retiring professors. It's definitely a "buyer's market", with most universities either constrained by state budgets or still wobbly from the endowment holocaust of 2009.
The problem with higher education is too many fucking layers of administrators, added during the relatively fat times of the 1990s and essentially impossible to get rid of at a state-funded school. At this point if I get an email from the Vice President for Paper Towel Dispensers I won't even be surprised anymore.
This. Admin positions are like the fire departments of academia.
Not only have universities not capped acceptance rates, but they're actively raising them.
State universities could cut all those useless majors, like African Diaspora studies (a real major at University of Texas in AUstin).
Well they couldn't call it "Slave Studies", now could they?
Not without sounding like they just got off the boat.
Scholarships for White Males Only.
"Scholarship applicants should be caucasian, male, demonstrate a commitment to education, and substantiate financial need. One obstacle that we immediately anticipate is to not appear racist or racially motivated. We do not advocate white supremacy, nor do we enable any individual that does. We do not accept donations from organizations affiliated with any sort of white supremacy or hate group. We have no hidden agenda to promote racial bigotry or segregation. FMAE's existence is dedicated around one simple principle, to provide monetary aid for education to white males who need it."
Hell yes! But where was this when I was in school 6 years ago?
The fact that they have to come out and say they are not racially motivated, but any and every pro-black scholarship or pro-Jew scholarship doesn't have to make that same claim, is utter bullshit. I might donate to this scholarship fund.
So they feel comfortable discriminating against caucasian males who do not demonstrate a commitment to education? Fuck them.
old news is old.
They've been talking about this in the news since last week, maybe even before that.
You lost me at "on its own."
Hillary Clinton says U.S. won't enforce a no-fly zone on its own.
Right. At least get, say, Honduras to help us.
Honduran Presidente: Sure, Barack. We'll help you. Could you give us $20B in aid to help you? Our economists estimate it will cost around $3B, but they went to Harvard, so I'm sure there will be a budget overrun, haha. But seriously, we'll do it for the $20B.
Let me be clear.
I have repeated said that My, uh, my Administration is open to serious ideas.
As a reward, here is an extra $5B.
>>The father drove a short distance away to pick up milk and then parked the truck about a mile from home. Then, Pinkerton said, he nodded off.
Soon after, one of the children smelled smoke in the home and ran to the barn to alert the mother, Pinkerton said. The mother called 911, ran with the child to the father's truck and banged on its windows, screaming that their home was on fire, he said.
Darwin Award nominee.
How so?
You're kidding, right? OK, here goes. A mother is told that her house, full of her kids, is burning and so she runs a mile to tell her husband of this fact. They run a mile back to the house, only to find that - surprise! - a conflagration has snuffed all her kids that probably could have been saved in the half hour she was farting around summoning the husband. We can hope she is post-menopausal but the gene pool is at least thereby largely cleansed of her dumb shit genes. That's prime Darwin material.
Wait, it just occurred to me - you're nitpicking because she herself wasn't killed, is that it?
"Police said the children's father had left the two-story home on a working farm in dairy country not far from the state capital, to begin his rounds hauling milk around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Two children, ages 2 and 3, were watching television at the time.
The father picked up milk and then parked the truck about a mile from home before nodding off, state police Trooper Tom Pinkerton said."
How did she even know that's where he'd be?
Something in this whole story stinks to high heaven. My gut says the parents planned this.
Have you seen the economy? I mean, I love my kids, but have you seen the economy lately?
King receives threats on hearing's eve

"Don't call us terrorists or we'll kill you."
Silence! I Kill You!
Don't let Huckabee or Gingrich hear you say that.
""King receives threats on hearing's eve""
British government agents over King's support of the IRA?
So because King supported the IRA, there are no worries about Islamic extremists. Got it. Well, I am glad we have cleared that up. I feel a lot better now.
I'm sure a Congressional hearing will solve the problem (assuming it even exists in the US), rather than merely allowing King to showboat for Fox News viewers.
I'm glad you feel better
Do you worry about Islamic extremists? I almost never do.
King is an attention-whore
""King is an attention-whore""
Must be, since he's having a hearing about Muslims not co-operating with LEO but back in February didn't want to invite LEO to the hearing to get their opinion.
http://www.ulitzer.com/node/1707966
A more descriptive line would be "Perpetual Attention Whore Peter King claims to have received threats on hearing's eve"
Fucking A. The damn Libyans don't need the USAF flying cover. They need antiarmor and antiaircraft missiles.
But, of course, some of those missiles might wind up in the Wrong Hands. So the bureaucratic imperative of risk avoidance takes over. Better to leave Ghadafi in office, surrounded by a pile of corpses, than to make friends with the next rulers of Libya and have a few AA missiles out there.
Like the fucking Islamists can't get their missiles from Iran.
Would that include the bureaucratic risk aversion that got us two land wars in Asia at the same time?
Nah. That's what you get with bureaucratic mission creep.
Nobody said all the internal dynamics of a bureaucracy were consistent.
Just like we made friends with the "next rulers of Afghanistan" when we armed the Afghan guerillas? Or like how we made friends with Saddam when we armed him against Iran?
Well, the Afghans we armed were actually the opposition to the Taliban when they took over.
And we didn't arm Saddam against Iran. He got most of his stuff from other countries. We helped a little, sure, but we weren't his sugar daddy.
France and Russia armed Saddam. Anything we gave him was tiny in comparison to what those guys ponied up.
The irish American support for the IRA reminds me of the pre-WW2 romanticism during the rising emergence of Germany. Post conflict, both parties were naive and regretted their loyalty
Apropos of nothing -- anyone who RTFA will note King "does not regret his past pro-I.R.A. statements."
The IRA transition from freedom-fighters to criminal-organization a long time ago. Anyone that has been paying attention is well aware of that.
The IRA transition from freedom-fighters to criminal-organization a long time ago.
1919?
King "does not regret his past pro-I.R.A. statements."
No fool, he. Dance with the one who brung you.
So fucking what? Have hearings on King then. But that has nothing to do with the hearings on Islamic extremism. That is just attacking the messenger.
Let's have hearings on everyone. Grab a phone book and start with the Aardvark Lovers.
Cleverly making sure you're way down the list, I see.
Next up: Hearings on the Fourth Amendment, chaired by TSA head John Pistole.
wow, i'm a slow typist. Kept changing my mind about what to put after Tea Party.
I suppose you would have been just fine with hearings on "Tea Party extremism", chaired by Alan Grayson.
Hearings on red-light cameras, chaired by Tulpa.
Sorry. Couldn't help myself. Yeah, I'm an asshole.
We should have red light camera hearings, and they should invite me. I'd prove all of you wrong once and for all on national TV!
Well, CSPAN at least.
CSPAN will be defunded by then. 😉
""But that has nothing to do with the hearings on Islamic extremism. That is just attacking the messenger.""
King's not the messenger, he's the facilitator. Congress can have their little inquiry, but King isn't really a friend of liberty or the Constitution.
On guns
http://gothamist.com/2011/01/1....._on_gu.php
Quite frankly, King holding hearings on the militarization of our police forces and how to demilitarize them might make me feel safer, and could lead to a better quality of life in the US than what the hell the Muslims do.
>>She said as many as 20 people in Illinois have received the death sentence but been exonerated. "That suggests to me that we don't do this very well. We don't do a good job of selecting the right people to kill."
Hey, here's an idea: Do the damn DNA forensics before you sentence them to death.
Hey, here's a better one.
Do away with the death penaly as the fucking government has repreatedly demonstrated it is too goddam incompetent* to be trusted with it.
* "too goddam incompetent" is a charitable assessment.
And what will replace the death penalty?
Were lynch mobs better?
Hello? What? Did somebody call me?
How is that a false dichotomy?
Either you have the death penalty with a great amount of due process, or lynch mobs with little, if any, due process.
There is no third option.
Life imprisonment? We can still afford it, for now.
That is insufficient. As Jeff Jacoby pointed out
Answer that .
I favor doing away with desert privileges for anyone convicted of a capital offense. That ought to send the right message!
Hey, here's an idea: Do the damn DNA forensics before you sentence them to death.
Uh, no.

Is an AOL address still declasse? I figured it'd be kitschy chic by now.
Who really gives a shit? We have real problems in this country.
Like defending the piece of shit DOMA (GOP Speaker of the House John Boehner) and cowboy poetry festivals (Dem Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid).
The more time they spend on issues like that, the less time they have on fixing their spending problems.
Did one of you guys put something in George Will's drink? He's starting to sound like one of us.
First he bashes trains, now he has questions for the Libyan interventionist wing of the political establishment.
When Will did the interview with Colbert he stated the constitutional duties of the federal government were limited to "defending the shores and delivering the mail".
Will is a thinking conservative. I'm sure he listens to today's GOP on the news and throws beer bottles at the TV.
Recalling an earlier post, we have a great opportunity to "keep the anger alive".
Charlie Sheen: [screaming at the top of his lungs] I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
Better lay off the Tiger Blood, Rich.

So close, and yet so far away:
But there are things education can't do. In particular, the notion that putting more kids through college can restore the middle-class society we used to have is wishful thinking. It's no longer true that having a college degree guarantees that you'll get a good job, and it's becoming less true with each passing decade.
So if we want a society of broadly shared prosperity, education isn't the answer ? we'll have to go about building that society directly. We need to restore the bargaining power that labor has lost over the last 30 years, so that ordinary workers as well as superstars have the power to bargain for good wages. We need to guarantee the essentials, above all health care, to every citizen.
He was actually doing pretty well, and then...

the middle-class society we used to have
Pauly needs to get out more. Apparently, he spends all his time with wealthy people and their servants. This is still a middle class society.
Hard times in in fantasyland.
Most family incomes in Bronxville, about 15 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, are in the six and seven figures, ranking the village among the wealthiest enclaves in America. But even an additional $100 to $200 tacked on, in a village where the typical homeowner already pays $43,000 in annual property taxes, has met enough resistance to make town officials think twice.
However else I might refer to the overprivileged yuppies who infest this town, I wouldn't call them "undertaxed".
That is just attacking the messenger.
Sometimes, the messenger's credibility is germane.
Don't forget, King is the fair-minded and sober legislator who wants to make every congressman and senator a gun free zone unto himself.

It is a little harsh to saddle the whole GOP with King's douchebaggery.
I usually votes GOP, but certainly would not vote for King. I try not to be a one issue voter, but support of the IRA (or UDA, for that matter) would be a single issue that would have me not vote for the douche.
