That argument is invalid. The reason TSA isn't in full-grope mode on trains is that passenger rail (other than the strictly local variety in some cities) is such a low percentage of the traveling population to make it not worth their while. If rail became a major mode of transporting people, TSA would be feeling train travelers up in no time.

This is akin to bragging that Mac OS is immune to viruses. Ignoring the fact that the market share is so low as to make it not worth the trouble.

The problem recently with higher (public) ed is that they haven't capped the number of students accepted into the university. The freshmen class continues to grow, and therefore more teachers are needed, so tuition rates need to go up, which means more facilities and amenities need to be built so that students feel they are getting something for their money. And it goes on and on like that.

Better to just start telling kids now: you know what, you might not get into college. So either work hard and challenge yourself in school, or start pursuing other courses that will prepare you for a trade school or something else.

The larger freshmen class usually means needing more instructors to meet class-size standards to stay an accredited/certified school. And in better times "more instructors" meant more tenure-track professors instead of just adjuncts who could be paid a stipend. So because the full-time tenured professors have massive salaries and actually teach less classes than adjuncts because they also have to churn out research and papers, the university overspent and received less, so tuition rates have to go up to meet the new salary requirements.

But also, you are correct about the administrative positions.

Well, these aren't better times. Few universities are offering tenure track positions except to replace retiring professors. It's definitely a "buyer's market", with most universities either constrained by state budgets or still wobbly from the endowment holocaust of 2009.
