Holding Our Public Officials to a Higher Standard
Montgomery County, Maryland, police officer Jason Cokinos was going 56 mph in a 30 mph zone when his cruiser crashed into 14-year-old Luis Jovel Jr. The impact left Jovel paralyzed and brain damaged. A police investigation determined the boy, who was crossing the street, would not have been hit if Cokinos hadn't been speeding. Cokinos pleaded guilty to speeding, paid a $185 fine, and is now back on the job.
