Segregation Hits 100-Year Low in Most Cities. Thanks Labor Mobility! Sorry Democrats.
America's cities are becoming less segregated. In 75 percnt of the nation's 100 largest metro areas, racial segregation rates are lower than they have been for a century, according to yesterday's Census Bureau American Community Survey of 10 million Americans:
"Milwaukee, Detroit, and Syracuse, N.Y., were among the most segregated, all part of areas in the Northeast and Midwest known by some demographers as the 'ghetto belt,'" according to the Associated Press. "On the other end of the scale, cities that were least likely to be segregated included Fort Myers, Fla., Honolulu, Atlanta and Miami."…
It isn't that the North, which has lagged behind the South and West in integration rates, has dramatically different attitudes on race. Rather, new housing and job opportunities in the South and West have helped to spur integration there.
The trend looks likely to continue—48 percent of babies last year were born to non-white families. Besides being a cool story of economic freedom promoting positive social gains, there's also a purely political angle. Congressional redistricting is coming up in the wake of the 2010 Census and race will be a major factor
Federal courts have a civil rights mandate to protect minority voting power, which tends to help Democrats, but such court orders may become more difficult to enforce in places such as urban Atlanta, where blacks and whites increasingly live next door to one another.

Damn! Caught up in my love of alt-text.
On the other end of the scale, cities that were least likely to be segregated included Fort Myers, Fla., Honolulu, Atlanta and Miami.
Really??? Little Havana is and the ATL are not segregated communities? I must have missed the memo the last time I had to drive through Calle Ocho.
*Little Havana is...
Depends on how you classify people. In Little Havana there are white and black and somewhere in the middle. Mostly latinos. I would say that Liberty City is more segregated than LH.
Remember, Hispanic can be any race according to the Census Bureau.
Look, this is Reason. The last time I saw an article here that didn't have a big, fat thumb on the scale must have been some time back in the late '90s. What were you expecting?

It is a comparison...as segregated as you think Miami and ATL is they are less segregated then Milwaukee, Detroit, and Syracuse, N.Y.
She did not say they were not segregated at all. She said "least likely to be segregated" which was a weird phrase to use I admit. I would think "less segregated" would make more sense or simply "least segregated". Still she did not write "not segregated" as you claim she did.

Not in Druid Hills (30306).
Dammit, Mangu-Ward... I left grad school for law school to GET AWAY from calculus!
So racial integration is embedded in the calculus? Man, Newton and Leibniz were way ahead of their times, huh?
The more people there are under the curve, the harder it is to integrate.
I have trouble seeing any differential.
I have created a monster.
Well, due to the continuity, it's not obvious.
All comments here are necessarily absolutely convergent.
But those by Chony, Max and a few others are irreparably discontinuous in the thinking domain.
I'm going to have to diverge with you on that one.
"Milwaukee, Detroit, and Syracuse, N.Y., were among the most segregated, all part of areas in the Northeast and Midwest known by some demographers as the 'ghetto belt,'"
Known by economists as "the union belt".
Fort Myers isn't segregated? The census is obviously looking only at zip codes and counties instead of actual neighborhoods.
Oh, I dunno about that - I noticed a while back that the Dunbar neighborhoods had a number of whites and hispanics hanging around. I'm in Cape Coral now but I used to live over the river - right on the 'edge' of Dunbar. My neighborhood there was certainly mixed - as were the neighborhoods bordering my area.
And my neighborhood here is mixed too. So there's more mixing than you think, perhaps.
Probably using census tracts, which, except in a few larger cities, tend to follow incorporation boundaries or be rather arbitrary in unincorporated areas.
Minneapolis is now more segregated than ever before.
It's like crazy segregated. In fact, where are all the black people?
There are black Norwegians?
Warmer climes.
So opposing AGW is racist?
Isn't everything?
No, because apparently it helps Democrats.
"It's like crazy segregated. In fact, where are all the black people?"
Northside, Ceder Riverside and the Phillips Neighborhood.
Who has the better Juicy Lucy?
St. Paul. And they're driving cabs.

The Irish and Italians and Jews used to be called "non-white."
Allright, we'll take the niggers and the Chinese, but NOT the Irish!
Yup. Blazing Saddles, like Huckleberry Finn, is often cited as a racist work of art. Why are "libertarians" playing that game? Because the Census defines us thus?
The game I won't play is being categorized. So fuck them if they think libertarians are racist. I won't even allow myself to be categorized as libertarian. Huckleberry Finn was my favorite book when I was a kid. I read it numerous times. Not because it has the word nigger in it. I saw Blazing Saddles two times in a row when it came out. And who knows how many times since. Not because it has the word nigger in it. (For you youngsters, there was a time that they let you stay in the theater as long as you wanted without having to pay more.)
So, eat shit categorizers.
As Mel Brooks pointed out, all of the complaints he received were from whites. Blacks who saw the movie understood that it was critical of racism.
Also, you have to take it in context. When it was used in my grandfather's generation, for example, it was simply an adjective not a pejorative. And I guarantee that in northern New Mexico in the 1930's, gringos were definitely the minority!
And if you didn't get the poke-in-the-ribs jab at racism (lumping the Irish in there) by Brooks then you're probably wound too tight.
Oh, and fuck categories, too. Race is an artificial artifact of the 19th Century, Census be damned!
... Hobbit
Hey, where are the white women at?
Well, we shall have NONE of that!
BTW, for something completely different:

Hmmmm.....
Um, how about, thanks free-housing laws, which Ronald Reagan campaigned against while running for governor in California in 1966 (but then cravenly allowed to stand, thus violating the sacred right to discriminate against Catholics, Jews, and non-whites of every color)?
Oh, and how about thanks, Willis Haviland Carrier, inventor of air-conditioning, and thanks, pork-loving southern politicians? How about them?
Can't thank the inventor of A/C without thanking the TVA then.
Hmmmm.....
Psst. Hey. Psst...
The "?" up there is a florin?a silent golden cry from within the 'pus.
The revolution lives on!
Shh!
It's also an F-hole, for you violinists out there.
It isn't that the North, which has lagged behind the South and West in integration rates, has dramatically different attitudes on race. Rather, new housing and job opportunities in the South and West have helped to spur integration there.
And so I now claim ultimate victory over Joe and all his smart growth hypocritical racist Bullshit.
Libertarianism is the second most lily-white political cult in history--a bunch of white losers rooting for winners.

Nice try, but we all know the REAL Max couldn't type ten exclamation points in a row without throwing one or two 1's in there.

It almost sounds like minority voting power has been protected to the point we don't need any more court orders. OTOH, I'm not holding my breath, given that San Antonio's 65% Hispanic minority apparently still "needs" protecting.
As somebody that lives in Miami, I have to question the methodology of this thing. I wonder if they are considering "Hispanic" a race unto itself? If you do that, you'd get high integration because the very few rich white anglos who have stayed in Miami and the rich white latinos live together in the same neighborhoods. It could also be a zip code thing. The Coconut Grove area is all one zip I think, but a single street divides the almost 100% black West Grove from the nearly 100% white Center Grove.
Quite so.
Every time I think of gerrymandered districts, I think of Gene Green. They drew up the 29th District to give a certain disadvantaged minority a majority in the district and they elected a guy that's whiter than me.
Of course, the first time it was either him or a crook.
Federal courts have a civil rights mandate to protect minority voting power, which tends to help Democrats
Helps Democrats? You don't seem to understand how Gerrymandering works. That one majority-minority district gets 2 or 3 Republicans elected next door.
The trend looks likely to continue?48 percent of babies last year were born to non-white families.
What's the definition of "non-white family"?
How does it classify babies who have one white parent?
What counts as a "white" parent, anyway?
And, given the number of babies born in my hospital, for whom nobody apparently has any earthly idea who the father is, how do they even know?
"How does it classify babies who have one white parent?"
One drop, R C, one drop.
I have decided that I will check "other" from now on and put down beige.
You know I think there is more interracial porn than there was even a decade ago. At least based on internet searches.
Just because you're searching for more interracial porn than you did a decade ago doesn't mean there's more of it.
Katherine, I am definitely a nerd and I should be your husband. I promise to try not to slobber all over your intellectual hottiness (I am in no way implying your physical hottiness is in 2nd place) as much as i can.
Katherine, I think you're good enough to share. Since we're all cultural libertarians here, why can't we try to make polyandry work? I'll gladly become your third husband along with Dan and Troy.
Sorry, but KMW isn't hot enough for me. And she lives far away. And is a complete stranger. And I'm not a d-bag who slobbers over strangers on the internet. And ...
Yossarian, your're insane.
Have you no sense of romance, prolefeed? The utter improbability of anything actually happening between Katherine and me is half the point.
