Village Voice Writer Trapped In White Derangement Feedback Loop

I don't think I ever want to meet Steven Thrasher in person. Aside from the fact that the NPR and Village Voice contributor has an ominously violent last name, this dude is pissed. Despite this, I'll admit that while reading his recent Voice cover essay on the insanity of white America, I occasionally pictured myself giving Mr. Thrasher a hug. Don't worry, Steven, I'd whisper: Christine O'Donnell is down 15 percent in Delaware. The Islamic community center near Ground Zero will soon be a reality. A single tweet from Sarah Palin doesn't signal the end of white American sanity. (In fact, there is no such thing as collective white American sanity, or collective black American or Jewish American sanity, for that matter.) It's alright. Everything is going to be alright.

Sadly, it appears that Thrasher is suffering from the same genus of derangement as many of the people he slams, something no amount of hugging will fix. Sample insanity:

By feedback loop, I thought your referring to echo chamber effects, which is definitely a huge factor shaping liberal perceptions of whites, in particularly the tea parties.

Basically, their only experience of Tea Partiers is via the reporting of other like-minded folks. Such as when the NYTimes cites it's own articles on the Tea Party in support of other analysis of the Tea Party.

At some point, these feedback loops result in people becoming completely disconnected from reality. As in the case of Thrasher.

The problem is we're trained to treat journalists as authority figures. People accept the word of authority figures more readily. But journalists have no real expertise or authority in the fields they report on.

IMO, most journalists get into the profession because they have an activist agenda anyway. The whole point is to assume the mantle of a neutral reporter into order to persuade people to your point of view.

Anyone who thinks that journalists are pure professionals who only desire to report the truth is laughably naive.

Nah. I used to be a reporter and deal with reporters every day in my current gig. Most people I know who became reporters did so because they loved the mechanics of the job -- finding the story and writing it down -- rather than its ability to advance the People's Agenda or something.

Remember, most reporters cover everyday crap and are not doing anything to which Politico or Huffington Post will link. It's school board meetings, local real estate developments, last night's house fire and the heartwarming story of the water-skiing squirrel. I was covering state government, and the closest I got to advancing the libertarian agenda was doing a story on third-party health care reform proposals during an election cycle in which I did a gazillion horse-race Red Team vs. Blue Team stories.

There's certainly a subset of activist journalists (See: Taibbi, Matt) but they tend to end up at, say, the Voice or Mother Jones or Current Affairs or National Review, etc. where you know what you're getting.

If you're trying to understand the media, don't follow the money. Follow the path of least resistance. Sorry Mr. Rosen,as a sixty 61 year old african american male thats served with the U.S. Air Force 1968-72, a year in Viet Nam 69-70 and spent 27yrs with the Chicago Police Dept. retiring in 2000. The last ten years being spent with personal and entreprenuerial endeavors. Offering my background,I thought I could add another experience and outlook. It's been an interesting ride and I have a nice life, however, I'd have to say that as far as I'm concerned Mr. Thrasher is 100% correct. During the campaign I would constantly tell family and friends"If this man gets elected;you're going to see alot of white folks have exorcisms". Meaning, a very distasteful display, and a
segment, not all showing who they really are.
