Simpson's Sin: Tit for Teat
The New York Daily News reports that former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.), co-chairman of President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, has "outraged feminists, Social Security recipients, and many liberal Democrats" by likening Social Security to "a milk cow with 310 million tits." Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), who I'm guessing did not do too well on the verbal section of the SAT, called the analogy "beyond comprehension" and demanded Simpson's removal from the commission. Simpson apologized immediately, but it's not exactly clear what his offense was.
The mention of outraged feminists suggests that Simpson stands accused of sexist vulgarity. I have to admit that I was shocked the first time I saw my mother use tit in a Scrabble game, but I was about 12 at the time, and she explained that the word is a perfectly acceptable variation of teat. Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary backs her up, saying tit is deemed "vulgar" only when it refers to a woman's breast. The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary likewise lists "teat" as the first definition for tit, although it notes that the usage is "now obscure" except in certain dialects (such as Alan Simpson's, evidently). So even by the arbitrary standards that make certain words unacceptable in polite company, in family newspapers, and on broadcast television between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m (though that last rule may be a thing of of the past), Simpson need not apologize for his use of tit. Objecting to it is not quite as dumb as thinking that niggardly is racist, but it's close. The Daily News perpetuates the misconception that tit is always and everywhere dirty by rendering it "t-ts" in Simpson's quote. This is like writing "t-t for tat" or calling a bird a "t-tmouse."
If the "feminists" (and the Daily News) are simply misinformed, one suspects that the "liberal Democrats" and "Social Security recipients" (i.e., professional defenders of the entitlement status quo) are both misinformed and upset about Simpson's implication that Social Security is a welfare program—not because that's not true but because they prefer to pretend it's a pension system. Simpson's real sin, in other words, was drawing a comparison that was a little too apt for comfort.

"outraged feminists, Social Security recipients, and many liberal Democrats"
All the right enemies.
I'm impressed.
I could have said that with impunity.
"I hereby apologize for using the word 'tit,' and hope you bitches are happy now."
To all of America's perpetually outraged feminists: lighten up, sugar tits.
And get your bitch ass in the kitchen and make me a pie!
Isn't Simpson one of the "moderate" Republicans that Democrats love to praise now that hes conveniently out of office?

The Jezebel thread on this one is pure gold. They're not freaking out so much over tits as they are over their sacred cow.
A sample:
Why the hate for anesthesiologists?
Seems an odd, and small, group to choose.
Sounds like someone's stomach-stapling surgery didn't go well.
The plunging needles are simply phallic symbols, and the numbness brought on is analogous to the numbness felt by women/womyn/gender-queer-transsexuals for their entire lives as their womynhood is denied by the patriarchy.
**golf clap**
Anesthesiologists have a sweet gig, despite their insurance premiums. They are limited in their hours worked per week so they don't fuck up and kill you because they were too tired to read the dosage right. They don't have to take insurance because you get who is there at the time of the procedure. You cannot choose your anesthesiologist. Whatever they want to get paid, they get paid even from your HMO. So as doctors go, they make a lot and don't have to work as much as other doctors.
And they get to fondle your tits as much as they want
They have the best access to drugs too.
So as doctors go, they make a lot and don't have to work as much as other doctors.
As specialists go, anesthesiologists do OK. As far as their workload goes, its no walk in the park. For one thing, they have to partner up on every surgery case with some freakin' prima donna surgeon.
Radiology - now that's a sweet gig, especially if you can get your group to pick up your malpractice coverage.
Have you ever met one? Smug bastards.
This is true.
That is CERTAINLY true of one anesthesiologist I litigated against a few years ago. And no, I'm not an ambulance chaser that sues doctors. SHE was suing MY client (a large pharmaceutical co.) because SHE was allergic to a product we make and therefore couldn't work as an anesthesiologist. I'd love to rant in detail about why she was such a bitch, but in the remote chance that another lawyer involved in that case reads these boards I'll have to leave it at that.
She's just pissed cause she couldn't get a rich doctor to marry her and keep in the lifestyle she wants.
Dagny,
I'm not sure I see your complaint. That particular comment was dead on. There are two viable solutions to making SS fiscally sustainable:
1) Strip the pretense that it's a pension plan and turn it into pure welfare for the old.
2) Scrap it.
The no cap on FICA part (I assume she meant SS, as there is no cap on Medicare withholding) and the I hates teh rich part were my favorites.
This.
I disagree with lifting the cap.
But I completely endorse the other part.
If there's one thing more offensive than welfare for old people paid for by taxes on young people, it's welfare for old multimillionaires paid for by young people making minimum wage.
Turn social security into welfare pensions.
Actually, the money shot to me was her complete and total inability to grok that it already was this.
They made a lot of money already, so tough shit.
I can only presume that she empties her wallet when the bums hit her up for spare cash. She already made a lot compared to him, so fuck her.
What's wrong with lifting the cap? The cap perpetuates the fraud that SS is a "savings" program for workers. In practice though, it makes SS the most regressive tax of any in America.
What's wrong with lifting the cap?
Its a tax increase. Duh.
Not if you change the rate to account for the expanded tax base. Duh.
People making minimum wage don't pay taxes.
They pay for it with a reduced standard of living.
They pay FICA taxes.
Well, this will play out in one of two ways. Once SS is welfare for the old, it loses it's political base and popularity.
Welfare recipients, old or young, are not a majaority, and welfare programs are easier to cut than entitlements.
However, they are just as impossible to completely eliminate as everything else.
So if we means-test SS, what we are really doing is "saving" a shelled out version of it. When, without means testing, we MIGHT be able to abolish the program in it's entirity.
I tend to lean towards means testing, but it's still a compromise, and I realize that it will make it harder to ultimately get rid of it completely.
Why were they your favorites? Old rich people getting welfare and young rich people paying less proportionately in taxes are the two features of SS that convince the masses that it's a "pension" system.
You don't think that "the rich" already pay more than their share of taxes? Lifting the cap means so, so much more money gets taken to be mismanaged. I get what you're saying about public perception, but taking the stupid of SS to 11 won't hurry it's demise.
That may be a good policy for nefarious libertarians who seek the end of SS by hook or by crook, but it's shit for a political policy. How do you think that would play out in the realm of public opinion?
"We fully recognize that SS is not fiscally sound, but we prefer to leave in place a highly regressive taxation structure so that it dies a horrible death."
Yeah, that's a sound political approach.
If you're going to tackle the problem, and tackle it honestly, you need to be up front about everything. Again, there are two viable choices:
1) Welfare for old farts.
2) Scrap it.
And I guarantee you that #1 will win the day. Given that, how do we get there?
I think you have to make the case that SS does nothing to pass on wealth. That it's funding golfing trips and buses to atlantic city for the well off while stringing along the poor. To see so-called advocates for the poor defend this is simply disgusting.
"If you're going to tackle the problem, and tackle it honestly, you need to be up front about everything."
Okay:
There is no money left in this BS Federal ponzi scheme. Get over it and good luck.
1) Welfare for old farts.
Ah. Means testing.
Some of us recall the bad old days when they had asset tests for Medicaid, and what a farce that was. Good luck with that.
Right. One of the big problems with means-testing, to me anyway, is that it would introduce significant costs into the system in several areas thereby making it unclear how much money would be really saved.
That plus the standard warning about how tax increases never seem to generate the additional revenues they're projected to makes it dubious that such moves would actually help the solvency of SS any.
To me _that's_ the worst case scenario: means test Social Security and have that not do anything significant to solve the problem.
No one is getting "welfare" from the federal government unless the absolute dollar amount of taxes of any and all types comebined that they pay to it is less than the absolute dollar value of services/benefits that they receive personally and directly in return in exchange for their money.
But the externalities!
I think you mean "teh externalities!"
Dagny, I must say your perusal of Jezzebel worries me. While SF is a dude and thus immune to the taint (hehe) of that site you are not. I don't want to see you lost to the taineted One True Source like Lews Therin Kinslayer. You should be cautious. On the otherhand, if you do become lost but take out that whole group with some messed up magic and trollocs it might be worth it.
Robert Jordan alert
Dagny is made of sterner stuff than you give her credit for.
I blame Sug for my addiction. I cannot help going back for more fresh hell.
That's why he always hands it out for free. He's like a demon or something.
I have no problem getting rid of the cap. Lower the rate slightly, but extend it out to infinity. And stop the "employer pays half and you pay half" nonsense and streamline the whole thing right into the the normal income tax collection process.
I don't understand why so my lefties are so for this one regressive income tax though. A lot of them know that it'll show the american people what the true costs are, and they know that breaking the fake link between this regressive part of our income tax and our welfare-for-old people might accidently slow down the growth of government for 5 seconds, but many even otherwise honest lefties still won't face the logic of the situation.
I agree in general.
However, one of the means test questions I would like to see is "are you healthy enough to work?"
We need to get away from the notion that there's some magical age when all of a sudden it's A-OK to sponge off society.
Save for your own retirement or keep working.
I think she wanted to show she could spell big words.
Also, lift the cap. All of the rich people's money should be dinged for FICA.
This kind of talk makes me nauseous... and the people who are proponents of it belie a terrible sense of narcissism and insecurity.
Who the fuck are you to propound whether someone else should be able to keep his own money?
Taking someone's money and giving it to someone else of your choosing does not make you "compassionate." It makes you a thief.
Fuck you.
Taking someone's money and giving it to someone else of your choosing does not make you "compassionate." It makes you a thief.
Compassion is easy when someone else if doing all the compassioning for you.
Actually it makes more sense (at least as a first step) to just turn Social Security into a welfare program and pay it from the general fund -- eliminate FICA as a separate entity and raise taxes to make up for it.
Now, as an endgame, I'd still like to see welfare programs reduced along with taxes, but at least we would be honest with ourselves about the nature of the program instead of listening to bullcrap about "insurance" or "pension".
And while we're at it eliminate the accounting fiction that SS receipts are held in a separate account and not immediately spent and replaced with T bills.
This story simply confirms my belief that the majority continues to buy into the fraud that SS is a "pension". It's welfare. The sooner this becomes an accepted fact, the sooner it can be dealt with.
Good work, Alan.
"the majority continues to buy into the fraud that SS is a "pension". It's welfare. "
It's neither. It'a a Ponzi scheme with a vesting schedule.
A Pension plan would have assets. Welfare would pay money to the poor.
SS only benefits people who were early to the game and lived long enough to see a payout.
Whatever. As is, it's a wealth transfer from laborers to the elderly. The benefit schedule may make it look like a Ponzi scheme, but the inter-generational wealth transfer of TODAY'S WEALTH is the only fact that really matters.
Not only is SS welfare masquerading as a pension, FICA is a tax to raise revenue for general expenditures disguised as an insurance premium/pension contribution.
If the pension system is simply a transfer payment from the young to the old, then fine, the tax funding it should be set in each year to match outlays, with some wiggle room for contigencies. Revenue trust funds can be a useful accounting fiction to balance revenues with outlays from year to year, but building up a huge imaginary "trust fund" od IOUs to yourself is utterly meaningles, unless you see through the disguise to the one of the most disturbing facts about SS.
And that fact is that Social Security is has always been intended to raise general revenue. The pension is purely secondary. The problem is, of course, that the people who devised it didn't seem to have realized how demographically flawed it is. The though the gravy train of SS "surpluses" would go on forever.
The though the gravy train of SS "surpluses" would go on forever.
If you mean "they thought"... well it only took 2 or 3 years after SS's inception before they had to raise the rate because they were projecting to pay out more than they took in that quickly. The rate has been lifted at least a dozen times. Lifting the cap won't do anything as it has been lifted before, too.
The same people who think raising the rates and the cap will cure insolvency are the same nitwits who think society can be engineered to their whims via tax policy.
Crap, is Minnesotan one those strange dialects that still use tits?
Is this another thing the effete east coast liberals are laughing at me for? Do they really giggle at me when I nudge the troglodyte next to me and say "look at the tits on her" just like do when I order a "pop" or ask someone to "borrow me $5"?
Seriously, tits is my number 1 goto name for female anatomy as well as a description for how things are going when everything is going great.
How dare you try to take my vulgarity away!
borrow me $5
Giggling isnt appropriate. Im pretty sure thats a death penalty offense.
And Im not even getting started on pop.
You wouldn't believe how long it took "Outsiders" to convince me that "borrow me $5" was not valid english.
When I was matriculating at Memphis State (yeah, I know that didn't help my english skillz), every time I made fun of the hillbillies for saying "fixin", they would bring up the borrowing thing.
Even though I know it is wrong, I still can't eradicate it from my vocabulary.
I use "tump" regularly, so I really shouldnt criticize anyone.
dictionary.com doesnt any have the local KY definition (it only has tump as a noun, not as a verb). Usage:
He drove too fast around the corner and his truck tumped over.
or
Watch it, your bottle of coke is about to tump over.
TUMP is a verb according to the people who compiled the legal word list for Scrabble. (At least, TUMPED, TUMPING, and TUMPS are all in the list.) I'd never heard of the word before.
Man that is a good one. I didn't even realize that was a weird part of my vocabulary until a couple of years ago.
I have lots of odd regionalisms from my time in the Army that I still use occasionally. Borrow me is one of those. Always good for a twitch from the OCD grammarian spouse.
No, everyone uses tits when referring to women's breasts, but it is obscure as an alternative to teats for farm animals.
My working class father-in-law used to talk about getting stuck with the hind tit.
Us college educated (well Memphis State educated), folk know that the correct usage is "sucking hind tit".
thanks, he's been gone for awhile, so I haven't heard it recently.
Simpson is using the country-boy vernacular. A brief glance at his bio suggests he never got very close to the country. He probably says crick and yonder, too.
Ah, the common man, the noble yeoman Simpson. Has his wife ever been to Spain?
Well I never been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
Simpson should have said that Nancy Pelosi has an ass like a forty-dollar cow. Even the fem-bots couldn't argue with that.
Jesus Christ, why do people from fucking Minnesota even bother to try to pretend that they're not really godamn Canadians?
Ike, if you had ever suffered through an invasion of Canadians during one of their Long Weekends during the summer, you'd realize why you'd never want to be associated with them.
They also committed the following heresies:
1) Insist on pronouncing the letter "t" instead of slurring it into a "d" (i.e. Minnesoda)
2) Rooted for the Winnipeg Jets
3) Say "eh" and refuse to incorporate "uffda" into their vocabulary.
LOL, OK that makes a lot of sense now.

SHOW US YOUR TITS, JEAN.
The mention of outraged feminists suggests that Simpson stands accused of sexist vulgarity.
The ladies have run out of new things to be victims about. It's always a shame when that happens.
but it's not exactly clear what his offense was.
I believe this falls under the prohibition on truthfulness. They signed a nondisclosure agreement, and everything.
Another thing to consider is that "teat" and "tit" are pronouncesd the same. Therefore, if Sen. Simpson said "teat," not wrote it, and pronounced it properly, his critics are the ones who created the confusion between bovine and human anatomy.
While we are on the subject of taking offense at innocuous words and phrases, I was very amused a few years ago when no one, and I mean no one, publicly used a venerable and non-racist term by describing (then) obscure and long-shot candidate Barack Obama as a "dark horse."
While /tit/ is an acceptable pronunciation for "teat", /teet/ is the primary one.
It's my understanding that the "teet" pronunciation is a Victorianism.
I, too, learned that the spelling tit is just a more phoentically correct spelling of teat, but the pronunciation is the same.
Webster's and all the dairy goat farmers that I grew up with would agree with Jeff. /tit/
... Hobbit
I inadvertantly went to a bad, bad site, and I inadvertantly read bad, bad commentary, where people referred to him as a "darkie horse"
"his critics are the ones who created the confusion between bovine and human anatomy."
So the femists are saying that they themselves, are in fact, indistiguisable from cows?
Fascinating.
That's offensive. Feminists have flannel shirts.
means-test it so that anesthesiologists don't get the payments if they make it to 65. They made a lot of money already, so tough shit.
I have no problem with that. Plus, it leaves them free to bitch ["BITCH" haha, get it?] that that money was just like all the other taxes they paid: wasted.
From here:
It really is astonishing how male sexuality is considered inherently offensive in some circles. It's pure objectification.
I wonder what happens when Social Security finally goes tits up.
I snickered
How the fuck can anyone call the analogy "incomprehensible"?
Is this fucking Opposite Day or something?
Hey, Defazio: when you understand something and don't like it, you shouldn't use the adjective "incomprehensible" to describe it. Dumbass.
Maybe he's actually that stupid. That said, I'm surprised you didn't take the opportunity to riff on Princess Bride.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Daily News perpetuates the misconception that tit is always and everywhere dirty by rendering it "t-ts" in Simpson's quote. This is like writing "t-t for tat" or calling a bird a "t-tmouse."
I t-ttered at that one.
I guess he should be glad he didn't use "niggardly" and just move on.
How the fuck can anyone call the analogy "incomprehensible"?
How? By sticking their heads in the sand to hide from old people who vote.
What did he apologize for, exactly ?
He's been married since 1954. That's 56 years. I'm sure he's used to apologizing for a lot of shit without knowing why.

Tits are a type of bird. There are bushtits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushtit), long-tailed tits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aegithalidae) and even black-breasted tits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-breasted_Tit).
What about boobies?
i really like both black tits and black boobies.

No, that's not racist.
He said he liked both black tits and black boobies.
If he was racist he would have said some of his best friends were black tits and black boobies.
Reverse racist!

No wonder I always get redirected when I type "Great tits" and "blue-footed boobies" (I was looking for Avatar fanfare) into Google

Calling the analogy "beyond comprehension" is beyond comprehension.
November second, Rep. Peter DeFazio is out.
When I was on the board for our homeowners association, we were formulating a letter to the members to keep them informed about a situation that was ongoing. I tossed out the phrase "...the board wanted to keep the members abreast of the situation..." Damn if that didn't piss off one of the women.
That's when you just take it to the next level. Never apologize to a twit. They eat it up and come back for more.
never apologizr to a tit? why ever not?
I'm surprised she didn't object to your "member" as well.
Your first mistake was being on the board of the homeowners association. You should have known. Dealing with all the hyphenated name, clinch-jawed anxiety-ridden types would driven me insane.
No, his first mistake was living somewhere that has a homeowner's association.
If that's all outraged feminists have to be enraged about, they need to catch themselves on.
Mr. Burns was appointed to Obama's Financial Reform Committee?
I think Sanders and DeFazio need to enroll in a study a broad program, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
Pension system my ass. I'd like to see statistics on how many people under 45 receive social security benefits.
The building I work in used to be the old Social Security office. When we moved in, the first year an a half we had to redirect people looking for the social security office. Not a one... NOT A ONE was over 50.
Would "the biggest, government-sanctioned Ponzi scheme ever created" have shut the militant femininsts up? Or is Ponzi some slang for cooch now that I'm too old and unhip to know about?
""Pension system my ass. I'd like to see statistics on how many people under 45 receive social security benefits.""
SS pays for disability. I'm too crazy to hold a job, or doing a great job pretending to be, can get you SSD or SSI. The payout is not as big, but it's still a payout.
Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker aaannd tits!
I can't be the only one to remember that this line is originally from Mencken, can I? Here he is, in an essay titled "Sham Battle" from October 26, 1936, referring to the New Deal:
"It may be, indeed, that the Rooseveltian or anti-Jeffersonian concept of the government as a milch-cow with 125,000,000 teats still has many years to go."
Looks like he was more right than he could have guessed!
Isn't Simpson one of the "moderate" Republicans that Democrats love to praise now that hes conveniently out of office?
"You know how bashful I am - I can't even say the word 'titmouse' without giggling like a schoolgirl. [giggles]"
I tossed out the phrase "...the board wanted to keep the members abreast of the situation..." Damn if that didn't piss off one of the women.
