Reason.tv presents Citizens Against Government Waste's Porker of the Month for August 2010: Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY)!

Conservation or nepotism? Since 2007 Rogers has been promoting a bill which would provide federal grants to overseas wildlife protection for lions and cheetahs. Surprise! Rogers' daughter is the grants administrator for the Namibia-based Cheetah Conservation Fund, and has been since—you guessed it—2007.

Congratulations, Hal!

    Just a cursory search of the term "mosque" on the State Department's list of "projects" reveals 26 examples of federal funds going to fund construction, renovation, and rehabilitation of various mosques abroad. The benefiting countries include Bulgaria, Pakistan, Mali, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Benin, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Egypt, Tunisia, the Maldives, Yemen, Turkmenistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Serbia and Montenegro.
    
    The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) ? which is putting millions toward "heritage preservation" projects in the developing world ? financed mosque-related projects in all the aforementioned countries.

In all seriousness for the commentors downthread, why is this not before the House Ethics Committee? If this guy has been lobbying for a "cause" where his daughter is a direct beneficiary, then he has clearly broken House rules.

Not to imply anything in defense of Rogers, who may well be a mercenary bastard for all I know, but hypothetically -- If a Representative's relative were to approach him and make a compelling pitch for some charitable effort he or she was involved in, would that necessarily mean that the effort was motivated by greed rather than sincere concern?

If some saintly young lady was involved in charities benefiting the homeless, and approached her US Representative father for funding to aid the cause, is that inherently corrupt? 'cause it sounds like a Frank Capra movie.
