Iowa Gay Marriage Stats, One Year Out
Some stats from the first midwestern state to legalize gay marriage, one year out:
Out-of-staters made up 60 percent of same-sex couples married in Iowa since the state began allowing such unions in April 2009, officials reported Tuesday.
The new report from the Iowa Department of Public Health says 2,020 same-sex marriages were recorded in Iowa from April 27, 2009, through March 31. Only 815 of the couples were from Iowa. The newly married included 199 gay couples from Illinois, 158 from Missouri and 111 from Nebraska.
Overall, 19,904 couples were married in Iowa during the time period. Of those, 2,020 were listed as "same gender" couples, 16,869 were listed as "opposite gender" and 1,015 were listed as "not stated."
Among gay couples getting married here, 728 were two men, and 1,292 were two women.
Polk County had the most gay marriages, with 484; Scott County had 238; Johnson County, 235; and Pottawattamie County, 222.

Gay marriage may not have made the institution of marriage as a whole seem less credible, but dry statistics sure make gay marriage seem less fabulous.
To what I'm sure is the surprise of many, civilization in Iowa has not yet crumbled. Maybe it takes two years.
I was hoping they would include statistics indicating whether or not there have been more/less straight marriages/divorces. I would think the numbers would be about the same in contradiction with the chicken little jesus types.
There's civilization in Iowa?
There's civilization in Iowa?
Indeed. Much of Iowa actually is a lovely place. Some of the most incredibly friendly people I've ever met anywhere - and I've been in nearly every state of the Union. And very low cost of living; strong education system. If not for those nasty winters and pesky tornadoes - and being a little too far from an ocean for my taste - it's actually a pretty attractive place to live, for me, anyhow.
I dont know about civilization in Iowa. Seems like people live here by THE BOOK!
Nice people here but very conservative. Lots of gay men married because of religion and then cheating on their wives...claiming to be bisexual..not gay!
You just wait. Yahweh will nuke Des Moines just like he did Sodom and Gomorrah over this ABOMINATION.
"Now, Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large US city where there's a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa, for an example. Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart. You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on, Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to God."
-- Dead Milkmen
I like you, Stuart.
You're not like the other people, here, at Hit & Run.
Oh, don't get me wrong, they're fine people, good Americans.
But they're content to sit back, maybe watch a little Mork and Mindy on channel 57, maybe kick back a cool Coors 16-ouncer.
They're good fine people Stuart, but they don't know what the queers are doing to the soil.
Your abomination has nothing to do with this articla, so shh, be quiet.
Also, divorces have quadrupled, over 15000 children have been abandoned by their parents, and there have been over 700 recorded orgies in public parks.
*over 800
How many people have married their pet?
I believe they're included in the 1,015 listed as "not stated."
Wait... who recorded them and where can I get a copy??
I would be curious to see the statistics on sexual assault, sex with minors, molestation, exposure, mopery etc. Is it not unreasonable to assume a correlation between one form of deviancy and another?
Also - I am sure the more traditional citizens of "The Corn State" just love it that there proud state has become the midwest's "pit of same sex marriage." attracting the deviants like moths to a bug zapper. You don't say?!?
Dude, Iowa is the Hawkeye State. Nebraska is the Cornhusker State.
We used to be the "Tree Planter State" We should go back to that.
I'm sure all of the pervert stats have gone through the roof since Iowa legalized gay marriage but the left wing media is hushing it up.
If only there were some source of gathering information without relying on the New York Times, PBS and The Village Voice. Some place where the news was reported without a commie leftist slant. Then you could gather the stats and get back to us. I guess we'll just have to wait until there are multiple all news channels and seies of tubes for passing information around.
series of tube
Series of lubes.
Actually, there has been absolutely NO increase in priestly activity.
WTF is mopery?
I googled this term, mopery.
It is pretty obscure, and means; to expose yourself to a blind person, especially one of the same sex.
Damn. I always thought it meant just moping around and acting all emo and depressed. I won't accuse anyone of aggravated mopery again, that's for sure.
Mopery: You never see it coming.
Two puns in one sentence. Well played.
Dr. Raymond Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddmore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!
TrappedOut - your conclusion is erroneous. Those stats could very well have increased, but you may have noticed that a majority of gay marrieds do not live in Iowa. Any negative effect will be visited on the states these perverts live in. How do you like those Apples?
You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with perverts, perversions, and deviants.
Why did you capitalize 'apple', is this wierdo code for something?
clearly, his internalized homophobia is showing.
Locked in the closet, locked in the closet.
A man's 'al walid hagi' is not for marrying. A woman's is for the 4 Finger Club series, volumes 1-14 on region-free DVD, addressed to The Prophet Mohammed, House of A'isha, and not for marrying.
Certe penis tuus c?lum versus erectus est, as they say. About me.
okay, Orlon is in two threads now. incif time.
Incif doesn't work for me anymore. Any hints?
Google search for the new version.
hey, the post at 4:36 is not the real robc. fucking trolls!
Dude, if you are gonna spoof, change your email address.
Lame.
Which Orlan/Orlon? I think there's different ones. I am OrlAn - with an A - I never post anything here, and just read along. So there's no REASON to impugn my character.
Drink?
Anyone have a direct link to the IDPH report? I lazily glanced at their site for a minute and didn't see it.
Also, any word on man-turtle sex crimes? Perhaps an increase in unwanted human-turtle hybrid offspring? Or turtle-transmitted "social diseases"?
They make my balls all waxy.
lol -> Iowa + gay marriage
After every gay Iowan marriage the happy couple gets a nice big corn cob for them to use on their honeymoon. LOL.
On a slightly more serious note, the numbers run 36% male and 64% female. So does this mean women are almost twice as fond of marriage as men are? Or should I not try to generalize from this sample set?
You've never heard the joke?
Q: What does a lesbian bring on a second date?
A: A U-Haul.
I thought it was a turkey baster.
Listen to me, you fools, Orlon is about as authentically a libertarian as a Cheesy Gordita is authentically Mexican food. Please don't feed the trolls.
I think that's the point. Orlon is a synthetic (read: fake).
I'm actually surprised that many men got married. So two men are clearly not smarter than one.
For the record, Iowa's state motto is:
"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain"
Iowa did not 'legalize' same sex marriage, the Iowa supreme court ruled that barring same sex marriage was in violation of the State Constitution. Like it or not, our State Constitution guarantees certain rights, the Court ruled correctly. We can amend our State Constitution if we want, that has yet to happen. Maybe Midwestern practicality and sensibilities are prevailing. Perhaps middle America (fly over country) isn't as backwards as the MSM wants you to believe. Can you say libertarian.
It depends on if the Court used the original public understanding of the relevant clauses.
It is not as if equal protection in Iowa took a new form, right?
Here's the decision:

Ivan is correct that the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that the statutory ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional under the state constitution. However, the result was that same-sex marriages are now legal in Iowa, so I don't think that saying such marriages were "legalized" is incorrect.
I accept your premise. They went from being illegal to being legal, therefore they were "legalized".
My take: all the queers that wanted to get hitched badly enough to drive very far already went to Mass. Iowa is just skimming the leftovers.
Wait. 16,869 straight couple went to Iowa to get married? Why would anyone to travel to Iowa to get married?
gays should not have rights, we know they are gay but the shouldn't get the same rights, its like saying child malestors should have rights too.
