Government bailouts actually started with Carter and Chrysler.

  2. sage   15 years ago

    Is that show still on?

  3. Pope Jimbo   15 years ago

George looks like his involvement with this show was a result of losing a bet.

  4. Jeffersonian   15 years ago

Colbert talked more than Will did.

    1. .   15 years ago

      It has always been thus.

  5. sage   15 years ago

The last time George Will was on, Colbert got schooled. It was actually fun to watch.

    1. Jeffersonian   15 years ago

You could see Colbert trying mightily to keep that from happening again.

    2. Internet Etiquette   15 years ago

      Link?

      1. sage   15 years ago

Uh, not from work, sorry. If I can remember later I'll try to find the show. I think on their site you can watch previous episodes. This probably would have been before the '08 election.

      2. Pope Jimbo   15 years ago

        This?

I'd say Will schooled him again. Colbert tried to get him on the defensive with his caricature of conservative ideas several times, and George is just too smart for him. I wish I had his sense of wit and self and place so that I could outmaneuver my real-life adversaries in the same way he handled an imaginary one on a comedy show. By the end of the interview he had the crowd whooping and hollering in his corner. That's really tough to do when you are in the enemy camp.

No there is a dude who is just way too full of himself LOL

why did this exchange remind of the exchanges between Spicolli and Mr. Hand in "Fast Times..."

  9. Warty   15 years ago

Colbert gets more and more punchable as time goes on, doesn't he?

  10. ed   15 years ago

Interesting vid. The best part is how Will exposes the NFL for the sham sport that it is (11 minutes of action in a 60-minute game that takes 3+ hours to play). But more instructive is how Colbert plays a character trying to be funny, whereas Jon Stewart plays himself trying to be funny and serious at the same time and falls back on the comedy when critics call him out on his political philosophy. In this regard, Colbert is the more honest of the two.

    1. IceTrey   15 years ago

If you took the time that the ball is actually in play, timed each pitch and each hit, in baseball it's probably only about 10 minutes also.

      1. ClubMedSux   15 years ago

Yeah, I love baseball but knocking other sports for lack of action seems like a losing argument.

        1. Distinguished Gentleman   15 years ago

Technically, the ball is in play whenever a player can legally steal a base. So, outside of foul balls and empty bases, the time would increase.

  11. Distinguished Gentleman   15 years ago

I would love to see Will talk to Colbert for another 30 minutes or so. Or really any situation where Colbert had to respond to as many questions as he asked. His form only works when he can state his oppositions most overreaching statement and then quickly get in a few jabs while they backpedal. Will's facts, followed by innocent sounding queries is what makes him a tough opponent for satire comedians.

  12. bruno   15 years ago

Will suffered Colbert with wit and aplomb.

  13. HuzzahHuzzah   15 years ago

    Good.

The Will of the paternalistic "Statecraft as Soulcraft" has been replaced by a much better model in recent years.

Fortunately, he hasn't been "growing" living in Washington.

  14. Picktorrent S.E.   14 years ago

Will is a very good writer who is certainly a conservative, as distinct from a Republican, pundit. He never hesitates to blast the President or any other Republican for straying from their principles.
I've read a lot of his stuff. As a libertarian, I dont' necessarily agree with his views on everything. The whole notion of "statecraft as soulcraft" (the title of perhaps his best known book outside Men at Work) gives you an idea about what animates the part of his political philosophy with which I disagree.
If we had more political commentators like Will instead of the dreck like Limbaugh, Coulter, Franken, and Stewart our nation would be a better place.
