Small Businesses Not Doing Their Fair Share for the Jobs Recovery, Because They Hate America
Here we are nine or ten months into the Obama economic boom, and still the president who vowed to focus on "jobs, jobs, jobs" (or actually, the most recent president to vow to focus on "job, jobs, jobs") is unable to show any growth in employment.
What does President Obama have to do? He spends hundreds of billions of dollars on makework projects. He orders companies to pay their interns. He begs banks to start lending again. He turns everything from government contracting to student loans into a jobs-creation battleground. And still the jobs just won't come falling out of the sky.
It must be a conspiracy. But who are the villains? Insurance companies? Unscrupulous lenders? Republicans?
Maybe it's small businesses. Last year Obama praised small business owners as the engine of job creation. But according to Constant Contact's 2010 Small Business Attitudes & Outlook Survey, the ingrates have responded by not hiring anybody.
Although 70 percent of the 6,800 small businesses surveyed expect to grow over the next year, 61 percent say they do not plan to hire any new employees in that period.
What could cause such an unpatriotic attitude? Sure, 65 percent of small business owners say their costs of doing business have increased, and 45 percent say taxes have been the most significant portion of that increase. And cross-referencing Constant Contact's figures with this month's Index of Small Business Optimism from the National Federation of Independent Business, we find that small business owners are feeling unprecedented pessimism about their future prospects.
That kind of crappy attitude has no place in America. The solution is clear: The Department of Labor needs to order small businesses to start hiring people, at higher wages, with coverage for pre-existing conditions. And we should probably raise their taxes to make sure they get the message.

...that pretty much covers it. Beatings shall continue until the economy improves.
Probably because those Kulaks fear that the federal government is going to force them to act as unfunded social service agencies for anyone they're foolish enough to hire. First they're required to provide health insurance, then dental, then vision, then child care, then transportation reimbursements, and so on.
What we need is a dept. of attitude and an attitude czar to make sure these free loaders change their attitudes and start doing the right thing.

You're supposed to attribute the quote to the correct source. In this case, Jackie Chiles.
Hey, it works for public schools.
What the hell is "SHRM 2010" and why is it on ads on BOTH sides of this article?
Why don't you click and find out? I DARE YOU.
But the HRM is probably Human Resource Managers, from my past life experience.
What does President Obama have to do?
Keep lying about it.
Why don't they just nationalize every small business, instead of the pretense of giving a fucking iota of concern about small businesses? Oh, I forgot, these psychologically depraved Emmy award winners want to taunt first: "You want to buy another van for your fleet instead of hiring another worker? GREED! You want to save for your own retirement? RACIST! You want to put your own kid(s) through college? HOMOPHOBE! You have the temerity to cop an attitude with US? WELL BEND OVER PLEBE! We'll fix your sweet ass for fucking over the poor and making US look bad!"
That way they can just spread the misery quicker. Quit pussyfooting around with the cat and mouse shit.
Workin' on it, Groovus. This nationalizing-everything shit takes time, y'all.
STEVE SMITH WANT BENT-OVER PLEBE FOR TO MAKE RAPE!!!
That you epi?
Small businesses are racist.
especially the Black-owned-and-operated Small Businesses.
If the government can make us buy something, surely they can make small business hire people. Or am I misreading my Constitution?
And I see that none of the lefties have mentioned:
If potential commerce can be regulated as commerce, what does that say about potential humans?
Are you serious? Is that a serious question?
The Obama administration is fucking scaring the shit out of small businesses/startups. Health care mandates? Increased taxes? When you combine that with the shit states and localities are pulling (like Washington state wanting to up the taxes that startups pay (!?!)), it's looking pretty bleak out there for the entrepreneur. I mean, even the dumbest kid can have the concept explained to them that it's risky and difficult to start a small business, and increasing the burden will reduce small businesses, but it's too much for Obama an Co. to grasp.
I'm not following your so-called "concept".
Exactly.
That was a sockpuppet Forrest, right?
Is there really a difference?
Are you claiming that Forrest does not exist? Aforrestist!
That was a sockpuppet Forrest, right?
No, that is simply the apt handle under which Tom Hanks posts here.
Here's the thing ... small businesses don't really fit well into the progressive worldview.
Based, as is it on Marxist economic theory, late-stage capitalism (the stage right before socialism), is supposed to be a place where small businesses has been squeezed out of the market by increasing concentration in a few large monopolies.
The fact that this hasn't happened, that there are still lots of small businesses being formed all the time, simply doesn't *make sense* according to the theory. Which opens the way for confirmation bias to kick in. When a progreessive see a small business he doesn't go "oh look there's a poor person owning the means of propduction and making himself rich", what he does is look the other way and forget that it exists.
Interesting.
I should have read downthread before responding because Chad seems to add evidence to your theory.
Yeah, and I posted even before reading Chad's comment.
Damn my psychic powers are getting honed.
Or, they're just totalitarians. You don't need an economic theory to be a totalitarian, just a burning desire to achieve paradise on earth by creating a secular God.
That would fit with Chad's personality as well.
Anyone else notice that he seems like a throwback to the Reformation in many ways? You know Hegel was a protestant right?
Here's the thing: intelligent liberals don't fit into the libertarian worldview. When a commenter who presents arguments that challenge libertarian dogma appears in a libertarian-dominated forum, which is of necessity a very small and out of the way forum, (s)he is immediately branded a "troll" and not taken seriously. Then the commenters take turns making fun of his/her name, and offering pseudo-critiques of his or her trolling ability, as if a troll would care whether the other commenters approved.
So the libertarian dialectic is just as pronounced: on one side you have the fellow libertarians, and on the other the evil liberal trolls. And it's just as divorced from reality.
D-, Mr. Gump. Where's Lt. Dan? Maybe he could help you out.
Forrest just wants a big-government/high taxes on Teh Rich White Mens echo chamber.
Interesting that your comment pertains only to the behavior of people on forums, and not to the substance of either side's world view.
Libertaians *might* dismiss commenters that disagree with them as trolls, but that really has no bearing on the validity of libertarianism in general. Whereas the inability of progressives to acknowledge the role of small businesses in the economy pertains directly to the theoretical underpinnings of their ideas.

I've tried to engage said trolls a few times now, and they usually ignored my reasoned responses after they ran out of talking points to spit back. So, now I mostly don't bother and just call them the douche-wads they are.
So, why should I bother?
"45 percent say taxes have been the most significant portion of that increase."
What federal taxes increased this year or last? None at my business as far as I can tell. Are we talking state and local taxes?
Steve
We are talking about the taxes that are inevitably coming to pay for all of this crap that Obama wants. He's even floating the idea of a VAT now. Welcome to the Europeanization of the USA, complete with high taxes and stagnant employment.
Europe is okay, if you have a job...
Can I haz croissant?
So we can presume you and your business have the forecasting ability of, oh, a dog?
How about an example:
In San Francisco, any building completed prior to 1978 is subject to rent control; those built later aren't.
So, of course, people build rental units, right?
Wrong. What the government grants, the government can deny. No developer builds rental units unless under subsidies or unless it's required to build the profitable units (with the discounted costs of those now built into the higher price of the market units).
I that clear enough? Or do you need single syllables?
State taxes way up for me and my company in Oregon. Licensing and compliance fees for my industry (mortgage banking) way up as well.
Well, duh. Your greed caused the crisis.
What you libertards don't like for people to have jobs? I get it, in Libertopia, rich people can do whatever they want and shirk their commitment to the community.
Most small businesses are owned by people who are more fortunate than others to have such wealth and they need to be sharing it with others in the community in this time of need, that, coincidentally, was caused by their greed to begin with. I don't see what's so controversial in asking them to help their fellow citizens when they need it most. Lots of these wealthy business owners already have more than enough money, anyway.
You're only against people having jobs if you're for the law of the jungle property rights, right?
Fuck off.
Awww, come on, that was a good parody for a beginner.
Oops... another one. Damn, I'm not detecting the sarcasm.
his name is Troll 1.0....
Your user name is a dead giveaway.
I knew I should have stuck with the usual Tony/MNG/Chad to make it more believable. Darn.
oops; sarcasm meter malfunctioned.
To your credit, I half-believed that troll wasn't a troll at all.

"...shirk their commitment to the community."
Care to define "commitment"? Or just admit you're a raging asshole who has no idea what you post?
Which one is it?
"Most small businesses are owned by people who are more fortunate than others to have such wealth..."
Yep. Like those Koreans who scrounged to buy the deli down the street. 'Way more 'fortunate' than you. At least when it comes to brains.
I'd check under your chair; it looks like yours leaked out.
Maybe the president's own disdain comes the usual cliche using size and/or scale as a metaphor for the size of one's penis and thus sees small businesses as mocking his own shortcomings.
Man, do you really have to bring up this kind of trash in a political forum? Not to mention that you're incoherent.
What federal taxes increased this year or last? None at my business as far as I can tell. Are we talking state and local taxes?
Might it depend on the nature of your business? How about this one for starters:
http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/0...../index.htm
Companies in at least 35 states will have to fork over more in unemployment insurance taxes this year, according to the National Association of State Workforce Agencies. The median increase will be 27.5%. And employers in places such as Hawaii and Florida could see levies skyrocket more than ten-fold.
I get so sick of hearing about "small businesses".
Half of them are your local McDonald's or Pizza Slut franchise, and a quarter of the of rest are subsidaries of MegaCorp or some offshoot which they outsource their low-wage work to, so they don't have to pay benefits to the guys or gals who clean the toilets. Most "small business" jobs are worth jack shit in the first place. The only reason they are "created" so fast is that turn-over among these businesses are so high.
Chad shows us why leftists are so happy about consolidating businesses into fewer and fewer mega-corporations.
-jcr
John C., you are so close to the truth... but you're leaving out the part where all those mega-corporations are owned by Me.
Bitches.
Umm.. Chad?
If small businesses are bad and I assume big businesses are even worse and I also assume medium sized businesses are bad since they started out as small businessees, what kind of job creation entity do you approve of?
Yeah, I know he is a troll...
what kind of job creation entity do you approve of
Hint: if the job requires SEIU membership, Choad is all for it.
Validating my point above.
To a progressive, small businesses dont *really* exist. Not *real* ones anyway. They can't. It doesn't make sense for them ti exist. If they existed, then the whole edifice of the belief that the entire economy is run by megacorporations would collapse. If they really existed and even replaced megacorporations over time, then it might prove that Marxism is just fucking totally completely WRONG. Such bad thoughts can't be permitted ...
I'll make THAT illegal, too.
Chad, do you have a cite for that?
My parodies will never be as good as the real thing. That's vintage stuff, Chad.
Don't sell yourself short. He was too lazy to even think of a play on the name, McDonald's. Let's see ... SickDonald's ... there, took me about two seconds of effort.
Hey, 1.0... sorry about that earlier. I'd have caught it if you would've tossed in a "what about teh children???" or something like that...
Anyway, good work. Always glad to have another ChadSlapper around.
Hi, friends... Billy Mays here for The ChadSlapper! Watch as we demonstrate this amazing product...
Is Chad Slapper made by a small business? Are you hiring?
And can we look forward to Trollslapper, MNGslapper, and Scotchslapper?
Um... I'm kinda dead, so I can't do any R&D work. But if someone invents 'em, I'll shill for 'em!
Ha ha, no hard feelings. I'm still 1.0 and didn't cover all of the catch phrases. The major feature right now is trying to properly assimilate the disdain for property rights and the default assumption of them being subservient to the whims of the state. That's a hard one for me to get my (actual) libertarian brain to get around.
2.0 will have a better "banal language" module.
Gotta get the basics down, yep. So much banality to cover, so little time...
But yer doin' the Lord's work, 1.0, and we commend you for it.
Well, if you want to study the all-time master, look for old comments by a guy named "joe". He was the maestro of passive-aggressive, goal-line-shifting argumentation, with hissy fits thrown in every once in a while for accent.
It's not so much what he said, but how he said it. It's the thought that counts.
I am the original Troll 1.0.

"I get so sick of hearing about "small businesses".
Half of them are your local McDonald's or Pizza Slut franchise,..."
Where Chony couldn't get a job by begging.
Small businesses are also very difficult to unionize, so the workers suffer from that too.
Because the employer doesn't count as a "worker".
Hey, Forrest... should the self-employed be forced to join unions?
Like hell I'll join a union. Fuck that.
Only feed the better trolls.
Chad, I am the only employee of a small business... owned by my boss, who works slinging packages and payroll envelopes and other small stuff, just like I do.
He is not affiliated with the USPS, UPS, or FedEx. He owns two vehicles - two cargo vans. One's a '96 model. Yep, he's fartin' through all that MegaCorp silk
My former employer owns a carpet-cleaning company, except he owns ONE van, and is also not affiliated with any "corporations". He, like my current boss, started his own business, from scratch, borrowing some money for startup and getting a clientele through mostly word-of-mouth and a small yellow-pages ad.
You are such a douche.
Bonus info:
The delivery company I work for has been around for 22 years, and the carpet-cleaning company has been around for fifteen years. Both with LOTS of competition, big and self-owned startups.
And, again, you're a douche.
Eh, I work for a small business -- 5 people, including the owner. Most of the other businesses in our office complex are (as far as I can tell) also independent shops. Anecdotal, maybe, but unscientific observation suggests that there seem to be more small businesses than large ones, even if they take less of the pie collectively.
Maybe there are more things in heaven and earth, Jerkassio, than are dreamt of in your ideology.
I am sure you can see a counter-anecdote by driving past any strip mall, and noting any of the dozen franchises.
Personally, I work for a "small" business that was born as an division of MegaCorp A, but then was sold to MegaCorp B.
What is your problem with franchises, exactly? They allow small business owners to draw on more funds for advertising and a larger supply chain.
Even the days of franchises seems to coming to an end. Look at the chain restaurants, like Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse. They are all corporate entities, owned and managed by a large corporation. But, there's always 7-Elevens and Red Roof Inns.
Well, restaurants are getting fucked by regulation. Banning trans fats, HFCS, salt and soda are easier to deal with if you're big. But the biggest one is calorie disclosure requirements.
Huh. It's almost like there's a trend. When government interferes, it benefits those who are already big and powerful. Someone should create a political philosophy based on that.
Yeah really. If you're a mom-and-pop bistro, how the fuck are you supposed to find out what the calorie count in your menu items are?
They probably have to send away to an independent lab to do the testing, which is going to be expensive for a one-restauraunt operation.
But if you own 1000 outlets, and you have strict control over ingredients and process ... you only have to do it once.
Slap, slap, slap, slap, slap (Thank you Mr. Mays) -- Chad, you're even farther out of your league than usual.
Hm. Hubby owns a small business (OH NOES! A FRANCHISE!), but since he only owns one store he struggles mightily and works his ass off 60+ hours a week.
I work for a start-up business with less than 10 employees. We work our asses off too, mostly because, thanks to government regulations and the difficulty they create when it comes to taking a product to market, we can't afford to hire more people.
We'd happily employ 300+, if we could.
Yeah, incidentally, I consult part-time for a small engineering startup.
Which makes me BOTH self-employed AND working for a small business.
Hey, troll currently using the name Chad. Try this: pick up your yellow pages telephone directory and, starting with the first category, begin counting the small, local businesses. Don't stop until you hit the MacDonalds under "Restaurants". After you have educated yourself, smack yourself in the head with the directory.
Re: Chad,
You know what, I do too - they just don't have the wherewithal to support the Socialist state you dream about.
I would venture to guess that most small businesses are not franchises, but doctors and lawyers offices. Especially here in the North East.
But please tell me Chad, why is there such a "high turnover" for the small businesses you speak of?
You are right, TP. Doctors, lawyers (and farmers) make up a lot of these "small businesses". In these cases, the "businesses" are more of an accounting fiction than anything real.
Which makes me wonder what fraction of small businesses are nothing more than tax dodges...
Tax dodge? As usual, you have no idea what you are talking about.
Here's your fucking tax dodge.
Can you say "unfair competitive advantage"?
Every physician and shyster I've needed to engage has employed at least one additional person to handle the front office. Likewise the physicians I know who are in business, though I do know a couple of lawyers who answered their own phone the first few years in business.
But take it from Chad, those "businesses" aren't real.
This really makes no sense, if you're going to make sweeping generalizations and not cite any pertinent data, your argument should at least contain some iota of a logical thought out basis. But, that doesn't matter to you; as your beliefs all seem to stem from an unquenchable urge to annoy those around you.
When reading you posts, one does not get the impression that your worldview is, though misguided, grounded in good intentions. I think your politics stem from a need for revenge. To avenge, not the downtrodden as you claim, but you; Chad, for some delude sense of injustice you feel.
Your disdain for the poor shines through your posts like a beacon, for all the world to see. Your respect and awe of power and all of its manifestations is also obvious to anyone who reads just a couple of your posts. Living vicariously through the potent vigor of the state may help you feel better, but for everyone else its a repository of misery.
And of course, small law outfits or doctors outfits don't count as small businesses. They are all fronts for TEH EVIL CORPORATIONS!
There seems to be a trend in my area regarding doctors. It seems that the University of Pennsylvania hospital, and Temple U hospital are now buying doctor offices. I originally thought that the big UPenn sign was just that the doctor had an affiliation to UPenn. But no, he is actually an employee of UPenn. Doctors are selling their practices to UPenn and becoming employees. I know Temple and UPenn get huge subsidies from the state. I'm not sure if they are considered non-profit.
Wow. You're a fucking idiot, you know that?
Most small businesses are taxed nearly to death. It's almost impossible to keep your head above water.
Tax dodge... what an ignorant douche you are.
I own a small construction company. Right now, I'm its only employee. When I tell people I charge $32.50/man hr, for home improvements, they look at me like I'm crazy, or trying to rip them off. They don't understand that, when I work alone, I'm lucky to see half of that. Taxes are my largest burden, insurance is second. If I ran a Union shop, or had to do a prevailing wage job, I'd have to charge about $65/man hr.
Fucking tax dodge???
My business writes a damn $125,000 check to the god damn feds every fucking quarter, you low-life ass wipe. I got your fucking tax dodge, nancyboy.
Chad, that is fucking stupid shit, even for you.
"Here we are nine or ten months into the Obama economic boom,..."
(snicker)
I will start hiring again once the construction industry turns in So Cal, probably 2011-2012. How's that for optimism?
Bwahahahahahahahahaha.
Same here in PA. We're hoping residential picks up, but that won't happen for a while because the market is flooded with unsold houses.
Ve hoff vays ov making hyu hire.
Where in SoCal? If the Inland Empire-good luck. Irvine, coastal San Deigo County, etc.-yeah, things will turn around by then.

Want universal health insurance? There's a law for that.

What scares me the most is that small businesses will eventually thrive as the economy rebounds and then Obama will take credit for saving us.
Dow 14 k by 2013 and Obama cruises on to his second term.
All this will be a minor speedbump on the road to progressive heaven, paved with the finest intentions.
Dow 14 k by 2013 and Obama cruises on to his second term.
If the DJIA goes up to 14k, defined benefit, public sector pension plans with private sector investments, like CALPURS, would get gasp of air.
I'm a small business owner. I mean very small, just me. One tiny benefit of owning a business is that I can create a deferred tax profit sharing plan. An itty-bitty nest egg. Here's an interesting regulation for you. If I hire someone, just one someone, just one someone who does some little chores, some little chores like taking out the trash and answering the phone, I either have to fire him after 2 years or vest him in the profit sharing plan.
This isn't Obama's doing. This is from Washington DC's best and brightest.
I'm comin' after your ass, j.
I didn't blame *you* Barry for this one, Barry.
You suggested he wasn't Washington DC's best and brightest.
Obama has only been in DC for about 6 years. The Borg was there long before he was assimilated.
Here's a bit of advice. If you need someone, try the temp agencies like Labor Ready and Accu-Staff. They charge a flat, hourly rate, and they do all of the payroll, and provide all of the necessary insurances, like Worker's Comp and General Liability. And, it's a deduction.
I've worked for one of those outfits and found it desirable only in comparison to not working at all.
How do they do from the other side of the picture?
It's kind of disgusting, if you ask me. I used general labor workers. Most of them were on parole (I don't have a problem with that). I was charged $14/man hr. For me to hire someone, I'd have to pay 10-12/hr. Figure in payroll taxes and insurance, and that adds up to about 18/hr (high risk construction). But the workers got a shitty deal. They got paid minimum wage. If they wanted a check at the end of the day, there was a charge. If they wanted cash, there was a special ATM in the office, for another charge. If they need a ride from the office to the jobsite, there was a bus, for an additional (each way) charge. After all of the charges, those guys were lucky to get $40/day. I always tried to tip my guys at the end of the week, at least 50 bucks.
Your own profit sharing plan!!! I could tell you were a racist just by looking at you!
This is why there needs to be, frankly, more under-the-table work. By as many damn people as possible.
"He begs banks to start lending again."
And, again, while the Bush and Obama Administrations were so focused on who was going to do the lending in the future, still no one in the White House seems to be worried about who's going to be doing the borrowing.
Nevermind that discretionary income is the very fuel that makes economies grow, why are we making it more difficult for small businesses to raise the equity they need in order to borrow?
Why aren't we slashing corporate tax rates? Why aren't we slashing or eliminating the capital gains tax?
Why are we effectively about to raise the capital gains tax by 25%?
The answer to all those questions is that the emperor has no idea what he's doing.
Discretionary profits, if you will, are to businesses just as discretionary income is to consumers--that's what makes the growth thingy happen. They're eating our seed corn. There's gonna be a lot less to plant if somebody doesn't wise up soon.
We can eat all the seedcorn we want now because the Fed is busy handing out slips of paper with the word "seedcorn" on it. That'll grow when you plant it right?
It's not so much that the emperor has no idea what he's doing, as that cutting corporate and business tax rates is completely contrary to the emperor's ideology. Using tax credits and deductions, the government has an opportunity to exert some measure of control over what a business does, rate cuts do not allow for such control.
I really love your website, it's so useful, i'm just sharing for my friends?Strong winter weather is hitting most of the United States right now. Many of the states that are not used to seeing even the slightest amount of snow, are being bombarded with strong winter weather. If you want to keep warm in this winter
you might try adding some clothes to your inventory like Abercrombie clothing . And the best sell is Abercrombie hoodies . In winter Many people are out enjoying this weather while it lasts and snow skiing and snow boarding are two of the most popular winter time sports. Both of these sports require good clothing right? Good . Abercrombie and Fith is our best choice.

As the partial owner of a small family business that's been around for 58 years, I can assure you that we will not be adding any additional staff or anymore expansion until this America-hating bastard and his dick licking, America-hating bastard congress is out of office and no longer threatening us, stealing from us, forcing us to finance a lifestyle for his thugocracy, and calling me racist because I don't do affirmative action bowing and boot licking at the government's nudging.
Fucking asshole commie dickweed. I hate this metro-sexual fucker and his big-ass beard-wife too. Call me a racist, you coward, suck-ass, freak! Big fucking deal. Everyone's a racist now.
Feel better now?
Interesting, Peetsker, but how do you really feel.
Interesting, Peetsker, but how do you really feel.
OK...moving on.
My small business owning boss feels the same way. I fear what will happen if the 2010 and 2012 elections leave this gang in power.
That had to be good to get off your chest. XD
Find a quote where Obama calls somebody a racist for just opposing affirmative action. I double dog dare you.
You can't, because that's not his style. His style (unlike yours) is inclusionary and non-confrontational.
Oh, and he'll be in office until January 2017, so you'll have a long time to wait.
Yeah, cmon guys. No one has called anyone racist for opposing affirmative action (which might make at least a little bit of sense).
They've just labeled anyone who opposes the president and his "movement" racist. And if you can't understand that then your a racist.
Just curious:
Which taxes went up for small business owners?
Which taxes went up for small business owners?
From earlier in the thread.
Chad's attitude towards small businesses is the same as his views of ALL business:
They suck if they make even one cent a day in profit.
Chad's attitude towards small businesses is the same as his views of ALL business:
His attitude is that of a permanent employee He doesn't have what it takes to start a business, and will always work for someone better than he is. Envy is considered a "mortal sin" for a reason.
His attitude is that of a permanent employee
Ding ding ding WINNER
There are lots of them out there and they vote, so Congress - both parties - panders to that mindset. Not to mention that they actually prefer it that way, because it makes the people easier to control and it makes for fewer levers that have to be pulled in the overall economy.
Corrupt corporatism at its finest, with its boot on the face of the very people it purports to help.
I think the envy is the key. I'm a permanent employee, myself; I've always worked for somebody else. But it would be bizarre and perverse of me to resent the person giving me a job. We're just engaging in peaceful trade, that's all: my labor for his money. We're both happy. Where's the problem?
See in the ideal socialist world, everyone is an employee. Preferably of the state, but if not that then of a large government-regulated monopoly.
That way, their wages can be controlled to make sure they are "fair".
The self-employed and the small business owners would not exist in progresso-land, because the state can't easily control their profits, benefits, and wages.
It's simply more efficient for a centralized government to regulate a small number of megacorporations than a large number of independent contractors and small businesses.
Its not just the tax and benefits mandates scaring businesses. Its the hostile regulatory environment.
Hiring anyone now means taking on an increased risk that some foaming-at-the-mouth bureaucrat will go postal on any complaint that any disgruntled employee gronks out.
The cost-benefit ration of employing someone gets worse all the time, on all fronts.
I agree with this 100%. I have exactly one employee and the hoops that one had to jump through are mind boggling.
Unless you have ever dealt with the Social Security Administration as an employer, you have absolutely no idea how awful it really is.
The grating propaganda on the literature ("Don't let your employees down"... by what, giving them a job in the first place?), 1980's era computer systems ("After you apply online we will send you a password in the mail in 2-3 weeks"), and the petty tyrants who run the place, who all seem to be 50-something black women with enormous entitled chips on their shoulders that expect 100% obsequious servility after that 90 minute wait on the telephone to talk to them.
You are absolutely right - it's not so much the taxes as it is the burdensome regulations. I don't have a contractual relationship with my employee, I have a contractual relationship with my employee, through the government.
To be clear, that should say "one HAS"
He didn't have to jump through any hoops, aside from filling out a W4 and a I9.
Goddamnit Tim stop giving them ideas!
Have taxes on small businesses really increased in the past couple years? I've seen no indiciation that they have.
Even the health care bill favors them. Businesses with less than 25 employees actually get a new tax break in the health bill if they provide their employees with health insurance, and small businesses with less than 50 employees are exempt from the fines if they don't provide insurance.

A tax break that would be less than the cost of insurance or they don't have to purchase it? I can't imagine why such "stimulus" hasn't permanently ended unemployment.
Look Marshal, you dolt, if i give you $50 for going out and spending $100, you MAKE money off the deal. Get with the program.
those Kulaks fear that the federal government is going to force them to act as unfunded social service agencies for anyone they're foolish enough to hire. First they're required to provide health insurance, then dental, then vision, then child care, then transportation reimbursements, and so on.
Here's a totally crazy idea. What if the "shopkeepers" just gave their employees some sort of universally accepted medium of exchange at the end of every work week, and then each individual employee could decide for himself how to spend it?
It
could
work!
I work in accounting/finance and most of our clients are small businesses with 50 or fewer employees. I can confirm most will not be hiring soon, but it doesn't have anything to do with taxes. It is because most did not layoff enough employees during the recession. The ones they have are under utilized. The employers did this through loyalty, taking money from their own pockets to help "my people". This is how they view their employees: as family. And they see the employees well being as part of their responsibility.
Of course this does not fit the liberal mindset that all business owners are greedy and profit driven, so it is a side you will never hear. And I hope Chad's statement about no real small business (or whatever he said) was just to get a rise out of the crowd, because if he truly believes that, he is a complete fucking idiot with no idea of what he is talking about.
My employer has been around for several decades and had the policy of no layoffs. We were somewhat overstaffed in the first place when work seriously dried up over the last year. The boss finally had to give in to reality and laid off about 10% of the workforce.
And yeah, he really values loyalty.
he is a complete fucking idiot with no idea of what he is talking about.
I figured that out months ago.
My hometown has 14,000 people and is not the least bit rich. But we have the following small businesses, none of which are megacorp-owned:
doctors' offices
dentists' offices
lawyers' offices
pizza parlors (no Papa John's or Pizza Hut in my hometown)
subs/hoagies shops
diners
Chinese restaurants
bars
liquor stores
banks (that's right, no megacorp banks in my hometown)
title insurance
barber shops/beauty salons
tanning joints (it's Jersey, folks)
florists
knick-knacks shops
laundromats
karate studios
extreme sports gear shop
car washes
bait & tackle shop
more contractors than you can imagine
auto parts shop
auto repair shops
dance studio
convenience stores (no 7-11)
gym
bowling alley
storage units
We have a local video rental store that competes very well against Blockbuster. We have a local realtor that competes very well against Coldwell Banker. We have a local car wash that competes very well against the one run by the BP station. We have a few locally-owned car dealerships. I'm sure I'm still missing some things.
Oh, we also have:
a small, locally-owned marina
a small, private hunting preserve
several independent custard stands
two farmers markets
dry cleaners
a news stand
photography studios
I'm not sure who owns the two nursing homes. I can't remember if the local orthopedic shoe shop is still in business. I don't remember if the local carpet store is still in business, either. We also have a couple farmers, too, but not many.
as if a troll would care whether the other commenters approved
Um, duh? Isn't that exactly the point of trolling? Its a failure if other people don't care about your post.
