Reason and Gary Johnson at Smokin' Betty's in Philadelphia on May 12!
Please join the East Coast staff of Reason for a reception at Smokin' Betty's in Philadelphia on May 12 featuring Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico and honorary chairman of the Our America Initiative.
In 2003, Johnson climbed Mt. Everest just a few months after busting his leg in a skiing accident. That's a feat less inspiring than his record as governor: Johnson vetoed 750 bills and never raised taxes in eight years. He is outspoken on issues ranging from the deficit to the war on drugs to Afghanistan and Iraq. He is frequently mentioned as a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012. The Our America initiative is dedicated to advancing the public debate on national issues including civil liberties, free enterprise, limited government, and traditional American values.
The event begins at 7pm and will feature generous drink specials throughout the evening. Smokin' Betty's is located at 116 South 11th Street, near the corner of 11th and Sansom Streets. Please RSVP by sending an email to events@reason.com to reserve your space.

The rocky picture has got to go. Something about it causes instant glaze over.
I agree. How about something from Angie?
we in philadelphia believe fervently in the cliches of rocky, the liberty bell, and replacing "f" with "ph".
My friend Laurie licked the Liberty Bell back in the summer of 1981. It was an age of great freedoms, now long gone.
RACIST ! You don't seem so concerned about teh slavery
LOL
So that's where Barney got the idea?
When is Ron Paul going to step aside and let Gary Johnson carry the torch?
Johnson can be VP to Paul, and then take over in 2016 when Paul retires.
(It would be good to see both in the debates. How about a debate over how to drastically cut federal spending.)
Ron Paul sounds more like a neo-con posing as a Libertarian. Gary Johnson is the real deal. I'd vote for him over that Romney fellow from Mass.
Smokin' Betty's is a fine bar and wasn't a bad choice for the Reason/FIRE event last summer, but it isn't as cool as, say, The Big Hunt where so many of the Reason DC events are held. Philly has a whole bunch of great bars and I think that others should be considered in the future.
I agree with you Qualis.
I'm really surprised Reason got invited back. I know I was horribly drunk by the time I left, and from what I heard from a bartender friend the party only got worse after I left. She said we broke more glasses than any party there had, ever, and that the Reason tab was incredibly impressive. (One of the glasses was me, which I feel terrible about. Got way too hammered. Thanks Matt for cleaning it.)
The bar had been open for, like, two weeks before that party.
True, I left out some info for brevity. I met the bartender socially this winter, at which point Betty's had been open 8 or 9 months. She said I looked familiar and I remembered her tattoos, at which point we talked briefly about the Reason party.
Glassware can be expensive, but it's usually not if you aren't talking fine dining wine glasses, the markup on alcohol is massive (it's how restaurants stay in business), and if you can fill your bar with drunks on hump day, after happy hour, especially if you don't usually have a massive dinner rush, you're gonna do it, even if said drunks are assholes.
