Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Fails to Save D.C. Schoolkids from D.C. Schools
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) tried to sneak an amendment to revive D.C.'s voucher program into the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization yesterday. Despite the distraction of the healthcare fight, the Senate took the time to ax Lieberman's proposed measly $20 million to offer kids in the District a path out of the city's failing schools.
Tuesday's 55 to 42 vote was widely seen as one of the final chances for the program to be extended beyond the students who are already currently enrolled. Funding will continue for current students until they graduate high school, but has been cut off to new students for a year.
This is actually Lieberman's second try at getting voucher cash appropriated. He proposed an similar amendment to another unrelated bill earlier this month. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely the third time will be the charm.

Bastard should have held out on ObamaCare for every damn thing he ever wanted back when they needed his 60th vote.
+100
Indeed.
Gotta give the Lieb a little credit for stalling ObamaCare and for supporting this. I guess everyone has a few redeeming qualities.
If the Republicans had any sense, they could make quite a campaign ad out of this. "Little Shaneequa used to go to a dangerous school in Washington. Then, a small pilot program gave her a voucher to go to a safe, private school. But Democratic Senator X voted to kill the program and send Shaneequa back to the dangerous school. Senator X, why don't you care about Shaneequa?"
Racist!

...Then, a small pilot program gave her a voucher...
Because it has nothing to do with Senator X. Obama himself is against vouchers. Not to mention that Fenty sends his kids to a school outside his district.
Because it has nothing to do with Senator X.
There was Tuesday's 55 to 42 vote.
"Little Shaneequa used to go to a dangerous school in Washington. Then, a small pilot program gave her a voucher to go to a safe, private school; the same school as Obama's girls. But Democratic Senator X voted to kill the program and send Shaneequa back to the dangerous school. Senator X, why don't you care about Shaneequa?"

Hmmm. I wonder if the real reason congress is eager to kill this is because it exposes their own chilren to the sinister influence of those poor black kids.
You know, before you know it our nice well bred children will be listening to gangsta rap and going down on eachother in the bathrooms.
You must live in the Beltway, KMW. $20MM is not, for the time being, chump change. And if this is money in addition to "normal" school funding I don't see how any self-respecting libertarian can support it, its noble purposes notwithstanding. If it's money swiped directly from the existing system that's a different story.

Coming from someone who posts as "Tapeworm," I suppose a nap is sounding a little better.
The voucher program cancellation was the point when I realized Obama wasn't just unqualified for the White House but was, in addition, a huge douchebag.
I received an email from Secular Coalition for America thanking me for my support to defeat this bill that they said was "an initiative that forced American taxpayers to subsidize religious institutions through school vouchers."
Grrr, I hate it when people supposedly advocating for me get it all wrong.
My Dad, not a Catholic, went to the University of Detroit on the GI Bill. Does the Secular Coalition for America object to the GI Bill "subsidizing religious institutions"?
