A Conspiracy So Immense
What a new history of conspiracy theories tells us about Birthers and Truthers
It was at a dinner party on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, hosted by a family of mixed Jewish-Scandinavian heritage, that I first heard the theory. I had seen it posited during my trips into the fever swamps of the Internet—those websites and blogs where zitty teenagers ruminate on "false flag" terror operations and sad old men blame their social isolation on the Council on Foreign Relations—but this was something else entirely.
It was 2005 and the army of pathological amateur pathologists, physicists, and demolitions experts had emerged from their basement crime labs, washed their Cheetos-stained typing fingers, and unleashed their theories about Mossad and the Carlyle Group on the world. So there she was, an elegant woman of faded but still recognizable beauty, haranguing a table full of educated New Yorkers with a theory so explosive that it promised to bring down the New World Order.
"It's true. I looked at the list of names."
"If we accept that this is an accurate technique for identifying perfidious Hebrews," I asked, "that they must possess names like Moshe Ya'alon and Chaim Weizmann, the question remains: Why were you searching the 9/11 death register for Jews?"
My host, a Manhattan-bred journalist of indeterminate politics, seemed a magnet for such people. Slogging through my email archive, I find her complaining that her father's new girlfriend, who now occupied a large portion of the family's rent-controlled apartment, was "certain 9/11 was an inside job." A few months later, she sent me an email explaining that her sister was "bringing her boyfriend" to dinner and he was, alas, a man "who has repeatedly shown her films claiming 9/11 was an 'inside job.'"
Around this time, while I was living in Stockholm, a fellow American expatriate sent me a link to an unnoticed book review program on Swedish state television. The host receives a farrago of suggested reading on the tragedy of September 11, but the reviewer recommends this all be balanced with French conspiricist Eric Laurent's book La face cachée du 11 septembre, which reveals that there was a curious uptick in stock market activity in the days preceding the attacks and that—guess what!—the United States government was behind the attacks.
For a brief moment, it felt like a zombie attack. They were everywhere. Skeletal hands thrust out of the ground, clutching DVD copies of a "documentary" made by an autodidactic upstate New York teenager, imploring me to open my eyes and help in identifying the camp at which Barbara Olson was being held.
So was this a unique moment in American history? Was the shock of 9/11 simply too much to bear, the wars that followed indicative of something bigger? What was the motivation for all of this wild-eyed paranoia?
It was a question that intrigued British journalist David Aaronovitch. In his brilliantly entertaining new book, Voodoo Histories: The Role of Conspiracy Theory in the Shaping of Modern History (Riverhead), Aaronovitch demonstrates that there is nothing new, nothing unique, nothing specifically "left" or "right" about those who see dark forces manipulating every world event, every assassination, every war. And while they might be fun to consume—who among us hasn't watched a documentary alleging cover-ups in New Mexico or pinning the murder of President John F. Kennedy on mafia boss Sam Giancana?—they do great damage, Aaronovitch argues, to our understanding of history.
Aaronovitch revisits and debunks, with wit and in meticulous detail, some of the 20th century's most stubbornly persistent conspiracies—the so-called Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Soviet purge trials, the various theories regarding American complicity in the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Sen. Joseph McCarthy's "conspiracy so immense," the murders of JFK and RFK, the death of Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, and the obscure-to-American-readers anti-nuclear campaigner Hilda Murrell.
With the merciful exception of those British conspiracies about the Falklands War and the death of Iraq War critic Dr. David Kelley, it was distressing to realize that I knew at least one person, and often more than that, who believed in one of the theories Aaronovitch addresses. When I closed the book, I asked myself: Are my friends all mad? The cycle was completed, incidentally, with my introduction to two "birther" bloggers ahead of the yearly Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
For those gotcha journalists hanging around CPAC this weekend in Washington, asking middle aged women from Nebraska to stare into a Flip Video camera and explain that Barack Obama is a Kenyan intelligence asset, I understand that such antics are both wonderfully depressing and guaranteed YouTube hits. But for those who want to see some deep meaning in these misinformed expressions of paranoia, who argue that there is something preternaturally "conservative" about such lunacy, that the United States is on a uniquely dangerous path, led by radicals, militia members, and a new generation of conspiracy theorists, Voodoo Histories will surely help explain the complicated and bipartisan provenance of the "hostage government" theorists. In other words, nothing new here.
As could be expected, there are a few points where Aaronovitch's legitimate skepticism leads him to oversimplify. In a lucid attack on the excess of Joe McCarthy, Aaronovitch correctly defends Owen Lattimore, a State Department consultant identified by the crusading senator as a Soviet spy, against the absurd charges that he acted as the "architect" of America's China policy. It was, Aaronovitch writes, absurd that "someone as nonrevolutionary" as Lattimore, who "had been attacked" in the communist press, could be denounced as a Red agent.
But attacks from communist writers or newspapers mean nothing (as the Spanish Civil War demonstrated, communists were more interested in attacking so-called left deviationists than members of the fascist ruling class) and Lattimore's own writing is full of praise for Stalinism. For instance, the collective farm system, he wrote, "represent[ed] a kind of ownership more valuable to [the Soviet peasantry] than the old private ownership under which they were unable to own or even hire machines."
It is also odd that, in an aside, Aaronovitch professes his "sympathy for the undervalued Noam Chomsky," an academic who eschews the wild conspiracies of 9/11 in favor of wild conspiracies about Srebrenica and the killing fields of Cambodia. Odder still is that Aaronovitch, along with fellow liberal writers Francis Wheen and Oliver Kamm, sent an exhaustively detailed letter to The Guardian in 2006 accusing Chomsky of denying genocide in the Balkans.
But these are mere quibbles.
Because while liberal writers frequently bemoan the sales of apocalyptic religious pot-boilers like the Left Behind series or the latest interchangeable conservative bestsellers from Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, Aaronovitch reminds the reader about long forgotten conspiracy books, devoid of any scholarly value, that racked up millions in sales. Who today remembers Return of the Gods, Fingerprints of the Gods, The Sign and the Seal, or Worlds in Collisions?
Though he avoids mentioning the red thread of anti-Semitism, it is distressing how frequently shadow governments, secret religious orders, and the ubiquitous "false flag" terror attack lead right back to the ubiquitous Jews. Aaronovitch might have mentioned the case of Kevin Barrett, a former University of Wisconsin professor of Islamic Studies, who is not only a prominent 9/11 denier, but has also questioned whether the Holocaust was simply a cleverly constructed Zionist plot. When Wellesley College African-American studies Professor Tony Martin was criticized for his shoddy research and bizarre Afrocentric pedagogy, he released a book called Jewish Onslaught, blaming his troubles on an international Zionist conspiracy. (Unsurprisingly, Martin later appeared at Holocaust denier David Irving's "Real History" conference).
Martin and Barrett were both professors at prestigious American universities. And this is the great takeaway from Voodoo Histories. It is not, Aaronovitch argues, the plebs and the racists and the obvious nutters that promulgate these bizarre and provably false theories. The consumers might be marginalized figures, but often times the producers are not. The 9/11 conspiracists are members of parliament, former ambassadors and government ministers, celebrities, movie stars, poets, academics, and musicians. As Aaronivitch points out, one academic 9/11 denier "received standing ovations from some of America's best-educated people."
If the new generation of anti-Obama conspiracy theorists—the birthers; those who identify his "communist" background—are to be found at Tea Parties and CPAC meetings, it is misguided to dismiss them as lone cranks. Because as Aaronovitch demonstrates, "conspiracy theories originate and are largely circulated among the educated and middle class."

Funny you should mention Francis Wheen in that article, because his related book "How Mumbo Jumbo Conquered the World" touches on the subject of conspiracy theories, metaphorical "end of the world" theories (Clash of Civilizations by Samuel P. Huntington, etc) amongst such spurious claims that Thatcher and Ruhollah Khomeini were somehow linked by virtue of ascending to power in the same year and an underlying hatred of "consumerist" culture (I guess that's to be expected from A Grauniad columnist). Still worth a read though.
Interesting that these conspiracy theories are not associated with moderates. The Blue Dogs and RINOS must be up to something sinister but my tinfoil hat with a direct link to Limbaugh has not been working recently. No matter, Michael Moore will soon have a movie out that will explain everything. Come to think of it if you spell "dog" backwards it says "god", isn't that something Jews believe in? Coincidence? I think not.
groggy old chap, it is my theory that invectives such as "tin-foil hat" and crackpot arise when the user doesn't have the intellectual ability to counter the opposition's claim.
You fit the class. Congrats
Actually, those invectives usually get raised only after you have thoroughly and comprehensively debunked the conspiracist's claims, only to have him say "Oh yeah? But you still can't explain why there's a reflection of a camera in Neil Armstrong's visor!" It's at that point that you give up and call him a fucktard.
Hey, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you, right? CHEMTRAILS OMG
"Building 7!" is the "Roswell!" of the 00's
Building don't fall straight down, dude! Pancake! PANCAKE!!!
That's what they want you to believe.
jj, you got me there, you're absolutely right that I don't argue with people that think the Mossad brought down the trade towers to hide Obama's birth certificate. You know I just have such a hard time thinking of any logical thought out response to their admittedly persuasive arguments.

"groggy old chap, it is my theory that invectives such as "tin-foil hat" and crackpot arise when the user doesn't have the intellectual ability to counter the opposition's claim.

Could be, but it also shows up from those who aren't willing to spend the time to link the science and know full well that doing so only elicits comments about 'how clever those guys are' and 'it only proves how they hide it'.
Gotta ask, jj, what conspiracy theory is your fave?

Bravo! Bravo! Brilliantly said!
JJ For President.
Of course people don't come up with conspiracy theories to sell books and make money, oh no their motives are pure and unassailable. Of course no one questions the fact that any group that could blow up the trade towers and cover it up so skillfully should also be very capable of knocking off anyone who found out about the operation long before they could expose it. Or even better, the people who blew the towers allowed false conspiracy theories to be spread around to further cover their tracks.
From David Aaronovitch, April 2003, re: Iraqi WMDs:
"If nothing is eventually found, I - as a supporter of the war - will never believe another thing that I am told by our government, or that of the US ever again."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Colu.....51,00.html
OMG, does that make him a dread conspiracy theorist? Get him, Moynihan!
Of course, this was an idle threat, as ex-commie Aaronovitch never quit believing either government for even a moment. Remind me again why this statist is worth reading?
I guess this doesn't count then.

No, it doesn't. Are you fucking kidding?
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/20.....085598270/
The 155-mm shells containing sarin gas that exploded in Iraq May 17 were manufactured before 1991, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday.
"That was a pre-Gulf War shell, a different category than the weapons" being sought by the Iraq Survey Group, Brig. Gen. David Rodriguez, the joint staff deputy director for operations, told a Pentagon news briefing. ...
Neither find is being offered as evidence of Saddam Hussein's alleged illegal weapons programs, one of the prime reasons offered by the Bush administration for the March 2003 invasion and war.
You mean David Kelly not David Kelley. It was Kelly who was found by a government that didn't like him to have killed himself in the woods with a blunt knife.
Perhaps he actually did mean David Kelley, writer/producer of Ally McBeal, who spread the pernicious lie that a young career woman really can have it all. How many fish-lipped anorexics were led down the path of ruin that is law school by that evil genius? Kelley is also responsible for the widespread (false) belief that Dylan McDermott is remotely tolerable.
Seriously though, Moynihan doesn't say what conspiracy theories his acquaintances don't have regarding Dr. Kelly's death. But it is certainly unfair to describe him simply as an "Iraq war critic"; not a UN weapon inspector or someone who worked closely with British intelligence agencies before and during the invasion.
Moynihan, who put you up to writing this thinly-veiled article about me? It was the Trilateral Commission, wasn't it?
reverse vampires.

"Birthers" and "Truthers" are smear terms that conflate unrelated people and tendencies and signify little.
Their function in the statist media is to discredit anyone who might ask why Obama's documents (transcripts etc) are unreleased or why no one asks basic questions like how we can spend trillions to "build" nations and create a multi-continental military empire but have no effective plans for air defense of the Pentagon or Manhattan.
You're an anachronism. Defense doesn't mean what you think it means; get with the program. War is...
Putting aside that one of the truther claims is that one or more of the planes were shot down..
Nevermind, don't put it aside. Which is it Mr. Majors, should Cheney ordered the Air National Guard to start shooting passenger planes willy nilly out of the sky? Or not?
What about those crazy wacko Tonkiners?
oh ya, the Gulf Of Tonkin was a huge lie perpetrated by the media and the government for 30+ years and now the conspiracy nuts have been proven right...why not discuss how this relates to your theories Moynihan? Were the Tonkiners all anti-semites as well?
This is something of an overstatement. There were a lot of anti-anarchist & anti-Trotsky(ite) pamphlets, but "fascism" was probably still a bigger topic, if only because they included social-democratic societies as "fascist".
The second link won't work. If you want, type "Trotsky" in the search field. Then "fascism", and compare the number of hits.
And I have to say, considering some of the shit the Mossad pulls, perhaps it's not surprising that they wind up in a few conspiracy theories.
That was the Masons framing Mossad, BP. Dur.
I thought the Masons were Jewish, god [or dog if you prefer] it's hard to keep these conspiracy theories straight. Some Einstein out there needs to create a unified field conspiracy theory.
"Einstein"? Sounds like a Mossad name!
Pretty convenient that Mossad contains the acronym 'SS', isn't it? Looks like there are wheels within these wheels...
If that linked example is how effective Mossad is at hiding their shit, they are the worst conspirators in history.
I could do better...
No, the CIA wins that prize for the Bay of Pigs. A Guatemalan newspaper ran a front page story on the training camp for the Cuban refugees, and the Miami Herald was about to run a story, when the reporter called someone at the White House, who asked (successfully) for the story to be killed.

From Mirror article:
"An insider said the UK secret services would be forced to cut ties with Mossad if Israel acted "against British interests"."
Is supporting Hamas a "British interest?
Not having their citizens' passports stolen to commit crimes in foreign countries just might be a British interest.
Go ahead and scream "Anti-Semite!"
How cute. Well if you insist: "ANTI-SEMITE!"
But since the fact that Israeli is a majority Jewish nation is purely incidental there's no need to accuse anybody of anti-Semitism, right? Always good for a chuckle when I hear the "anti-Zionist not anti-Semitism" retort. Like when a person opens a sentence "I have a Jewish/atheist/etc friends...". When you hear that you've already heard the rest of the sentence.
Why do you call yourself a? Are you Canadian, a?
The preferred spelling is "eh" not "a". Since he didn't mention Sunday's US v. Canada hockey game, and how we're a bunch of sucks who are going to get our asses kicked, he's probably not Canadian.
Wow, excellent response. You behaved exactly as expected and avoided the substance of my actual comment.
Reading comprehension must not be your strong suit, a.

In other words, he ranted about anti-Semitism (I never said a goddamn word about Jews or Zionism, just the British government's grounds for complaint), completely ignoring the point about identity theft.
"Avoided the substance"? More like the "substance" went straight over my head. I never said anything about anti-Semitism, I just thought the issue of an assassination of a head terrorist in a private hotel was of greater importance than identity theft, which is fantastically widespread in the UK and would not warrant "a 20-minute dressing down" of a foreign ambassador under normal circumstances.
The British government has to moan in public about the identity theft. How could it not?
I'm deeply uncomfortable with Israel because of my Jewish heritage. I don't think that countries should exist for the people of one race or religion. I don't think Christian nations should exist, or Muslim nations, or Jewish nations. I get why so many Jews want to be in the majority for once, but I don't think it's any more right for Muslims to be second class citizens in a Jewish country than it is for Jews to be second class citizens in a Muslim country. And I know that I should be condemning every Muslim majority country on the same grounds, and I do.
Israel is just a majority-Jewish state and is in fact the most secular state in the region (according to Wikipeida "In Israel, around 50% of Israelis who were born ethnically Jewish consider themselves "secular" or hilonim")
That, coupled with relative economic freedom, is why it's a developed nation with greater freedom and human rights for Muslims, women and Muslim women than any Islamic theocracy nearby.
Ends and Means. The former will never justify the latter. They may always be connected and impossible to change without more "justified" means, but going about the wrong way for the "right" things should never be a plan for life.
The Warren Commission Report is whackier than at least 25% of the JFK assassination conspiracy theories.
Case Closed: Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK is a weaker argument than at least 50% of JFK assassination conspiracies
Where is your alibi?
The real problem is that some conspiracy theories wind up being true. Like Gulf of Tonkin false flag operations.
I, for one, am putting a long bet on cattle mutilations being a covert mad cow monitoring programme. You know, that way in the odd event that it should come true, I get to say "toldja so" to all my unbelieving friends. You gotta do that from time to time so that you seem like some sort of all-seeing oracle.
+1 for Wayne Morse
According to Moynihan, if you use the term "false-flag attack "then your practically a birther-anti-semite.
Moynihan, false flag attacks do exist and they have been carried out by our government to get us into wars in the past. If you think this is a good thing(Straussian), then be honest about it. You are addressing these issues int eh shadiest of ways.
The more that people are aware of the false flag attack concept the safer we will be from them in the future. Putting a turd in punch bowl by trying to make it seem anti-semite to use the term is a attack on reason.
I, for one, am putting a long bet on cattle mutilations being a covert mad cow monitoring programme.
I blame Steve Smith.
The history of Game Theory is more interesting.
Me, today: Funny, isn't it, how now that there's a Democrat in the White House, people who oppose various government programs and policies are lumped in together with the Birthers and other assorted whackjobs, so that it looks like anyone who protests anything the Administration does is a potential domestic terrorist? I don't know, it's almost like the previous 8 years under Bushitler and his evil overlord Darth Cheney never happened...
me, circa 2004: Funny, isn't it, how now that there's a Democrat Republican in the White House, people who oppose various government programs and policies are lumped in together with the Birthers the communists and ANSWER and other assorted whackjobs, so that it looks like anyone who protests anything the Administration does is a potential domestic terrorist? I don't know, it's almost like the previous 8 years under Bushitler and his evil overlord Darth Cheney Slick Willy and all his evil machinations never happened...
I honestly don't remember the Bush I and Reagan years all that well (there was no Internet and I was drunk a lot). I know everyone on the left thought Ronnie would get us all nuked, but was there the same level of paranoia and frenzied conspiracies as there was/were under Clinton and Bush II and Obama?

How can everyone miss the obvious real coverup - Aaronovich's book is a diversion to keep everyone's attention off the fact that aliens want to get Scotland to the Wimbledon finals so the Blanc Mange can win. Duh!
Scotland will never win anything ever.
and should they ever do, it will be a British win.
Nothing can compare to the fendish plot called golf.
The Scots win with every swish the rest of us waste on that infuriating "walk spoiled".
So there she was, an elegant woman of faded but still recognizable beauty, haranguing a table full of educated New Yorkers with a theory so explosive that it promised to bring down the New World Order.
A room full of educated New Yorkers. What more enlightened group could you possibly ask for? If she got it by them it must be true.
Just like Cheney being Darth Vader.
to be fair if you've seen the rest of america even a room full of staten islanders is an improvement.
The rest of America is the charming part.
ha! no, really, though, have you seen it? hundreds of miles of cowboy hats and sweatpants. and half of them are on welfare because their gut threw out their back. (which is where i presume the sweatpants come in)
i suppose that's charming in a david cronenberg sort of way.
Brooklyn is NOT the rest of America!
try reading that again: cowboy hats AND sweatpants.
they do not go together, and yet they do. it is a mystery. perhaps it's just very comfy to wear to the diner? you have to do a lot of driving in 'merica so comfort is key. the hat keeps rain and howler monkeys from your brow, and the sweatpants allow ease of movement for quick braking/application of syrup.
Dhex, Your cultural commentary is so good...honestly, I can only compare it to Breakfast of Champions.
you know, i've never really read any vonnegut, but i did laugh at the movie. (which is apparently terrible according to those who would know?)
The mental rigors of the educated intellectual New York crowd is only surpassed by the TSA screening capabilities for exploding undies.
I always thought of Rove as Vader and Cheney as the Sith Lord. Bush was the bumbling General that was choked to death or the trade federation guy.
Then again stupidity in this sense shouldn't be confused with a lack of intellect. There are some very well educated stupid people. The question is one of application and not education.
Spot on. As my grandmother used to say, "there's plenty of educated fools."
Of course, she was both uneducated and foolish. And pretty dumb to boot.

It's nice that there's another book debunking crazy conspiracy theories. You can never have too many of those, I suppose. But what's up about the "Soviet purge trials" not being true? I've not heard that before. Are we talking about Stalin's show trials during the Great Purge?
I think Moynihan's referring to the fact that lots of starry eyed Western libs refused to believe, for an inexcusably long time, that Stalin was conducting the show trials and purge.
I should have been able to figure that one out. Thanks, stubby. I guess I'm not used to the old pro-Soviet stubbornness being labeled this way. It sure fits, though.
A couple examples from the same online library I linked to above: Eyewitness to the Wreckers' Trial and The First Two Moscow Trials: Why?.
I know some people in these here parts read Tim Powers.
Declare is set in WWII and immediately post-WWII Europe. The protagonist falls in love w/a beautiful French Resistance chick who's a commie and spying for the Soviets. At some point after the liberation she gets nabbed by the Russians, charged with some kind of counter revolutionary bullshit, and slapped in prison. As she's changed to a wall in the bowels of Lubyanka, she decides maybe the glorious communist revolution isn't all that she thought it was.
One of her cell mates, however, remains relentlessly dedicated to the cause, certain that eventually, the Comrades will realize their mistake and understand that they - i.e., Protagonist's girlfriend and cellmate -- don't belong in prison for thoughtcrime. Other people do, yes, but not them.
I'm not sure how that relates to the conspiracy theory mindset, but I think it does. Anyhow, I love that scene.
What's not to like about that scene.
He should keep writing about beer.
That novel definitely sounds far more interesting than the pamphlets I posted. But the sheer denial and utter bullshit in some of those pamphlets has its own macabre interest.
Well, in that case, wouldn't that be a "conspiracy theory" that proved true?
Yes, it would be a conspiracy theory proved true....be careful, this sort of thinking will lead to belief in lizard people.
So the Jews didn't JUST conspire to murder someone in Dubai? Look the other way folks, nothing to see here!
Mossad="The Jews"? Ha ha, OK.
Are the members of the Mossad not Jews? Are the leaders who give the Mossad its orders not Jews? Is the Prime Minister not a Jew? If every single person involved was a Jew then whats your problem?
Are the members of the Mossad not Jews?
Not all of them.
When you say "The Jews", I assume that group to include all, or at least, the vast majority of Jewish people. I don't think this scenario fits the bill, so I think you could use a more specific term like Mossad or Israeli Intelligence.
Seriously, it's like watching the US Olympics Men's Basketball team win gold and saying "did you see what the blacks did?"
Metonymy/synecdoche/stereotype should be used carefully.
Yeah sure, all you people think like that...
...fucking artillerymen.
Te Art is Artillery? They use math a lot don't they? Very cool.
I'll be honest. These days the artillery ends up working outside of MOS more often than not. But it's still all gravy and I'm glad you think it's cool.
I've also got to admit that the pogue in my name references my background in artillery repair (ordnance) rather than the field artillery proper.
All this time I thought Art was for your music and poetry. Sigh.
It is actually for my painting and illustration. I'm a warrior-poet in the classical sense.
Awesome! Do you have any of it on the internet?
I have some on my Myspace page, some on my Facebook page, some at an undisclosed location on the internets.
Awesome. If I ever do finish my screenplay, I'll be in touch about the storyboards...
Israel is primarily populated and governed by Jews and Arabs. For obvious reasons Arabs are favored for some Mossad field operations.
No, working for Mossad is not a sure indicator of one being Jewish. Nor would a Mossad operation alleged or otherwise indicate a Jewish conspiracy. Mossad is the Institute for Intelligence within the government of the state of Israel, most Jews live outside that state, Israeli or otherwise many Jews despise Mossad or at least they claim to. Israel began as a communal socialist state, as is always the case with socialism that model failed and was abandoned. With that abandonment the support of much of world population of out spoken Jewish people was also lost. There has never been one voice of the Jewish people in the past and it was never more so than today. I know for a fact there are Jewish libertarians and of every other political philosophy and group and even those who are entirely apolitical.
It's obvious you are letting your emotions infect your information processing that's rarely if ever a wise choice.
Two Jews, three opinions.
If you cut me, do I not bleed?
And an assassination means some sort of spooky conspiracy. Not action in the course of business.
How about that big conspiracy to sink the Bismark? It involved thousands. Saw the movie on TV too.
Wait! IT may have tricked us there The Art.
No conspiracy's too spooky for me, Suki! Wait, I take that back.
I gotta admit, I have no problem with Mossad offing that guy. I never weep for Hamas. Using real peoples' passports is what pissed me off - on the other hand, perhaps Mossad intended that the subterfuge would be quickly discovered - I still think someone in Dubai is working with Mossad - so they knew the passport holders wouldn't be targeted.
I think Hamas sucks too. Just like the rest of the terrorists, like the PLO. Is there still a PLO?
While I can understand that, it's the same issue as any capital punishment case. What if they got the wrong guy? It's happened before.
"some conspiracy theories wind up being true. Like Gulf of Tonkin false flag operations."
Even if you accept the Tonkin Gulf conspiracy theory, it wasn't a "false flag operation".
What is known to be true about the incident does not support the conspiracy view - that is, a bunch of people on the destroyers got spooked and wound up shooting at nothing.
Plus, I thought "false flag" meant a whole different thing. Like the Australians pretended to be North Vietnamese instead of a phantom North Vietnamese ship.
"False Flag" is the in comment for the modern tin-foil hat types. Using it shows that you really know a lot about intelligence operations, and are qualified to explain them to the rubes.
Once you hear the term you can pretty much guess the content of the rest of the conversation.
Let me guess : YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT who licks his master's balls daily. s/master's balls/his country.
You're correct. That's what it means.
"So there she was, an elegant woman of faded but still recognizable beauty" I have a conspiracy theory that Moynihan would never have written a sentence describing a man in such a manner. Wait, what do you call a theory that's true?
Well, if you're a man and you describe another man's beauty, that automagically makes you gay. And AFAIK, Moynihan's not gay. Or are you insinuating sexism on Moynihan's part?
Well, if you're a man and you describe another man's beauty, that automagically makes you gay.
Or European or Cosmotarian . . .
Sorry, you covered that already.
I already figured that Moynihan is straight. I don't know any gay men who would describe a man or woman by their looks when it had no relevance to the article.
Oh, c'mon, let it go and have a drink.
I would if I could get a good whack in by doing it. You don't know any of us mean queers do you? Stay out of dark alleys.
I rely on my gay friends to protect me from mean queers.
If I describe a woman's beauty will that make me straight? My cock says "no." Talk to it if you disagree.
Bruce, re-read Art's post again, this time with sarcasm detector on.
Thank you Penguin. C'mon, Bruce, whenever I use the word "automagically", I'm being tongue-in-cheek.
"I'm being tongue-in-cheek." Stop teasing Bruce.
Only when talking about a naked Scott Brown.
Was there anything about crazy Soviet conspiracies about the West? I only caught the first page.
For a brief moment, it felt like a zombie attack. They were everywhere.
Ha! You nailed the feeling, Michael! I had the exact same reaction a few years ago when, working at an aerospace company, I uncovered a group of engineers who were Apollo Hoax Believers. This was a company where you could go talk to people who were directly involved in the Apollo launches! And these were guys who worked on satellite designs! It was one of the most surreal moment in my life.
I did what I could. Directed them to Dr. Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy site and clavius.org and other debunkers, but after a short while you realize there is no way to reason with people like that. I just flat out consider it a mental illness now.
Sadly, my elderly father is a birther and an "Obama is a muslim" advocate. I have made several attempts to break him of the delusion, but to no avail. I even tried it from the other direction with arguments like, well, if Obama *is* a muslim, maybe they'll quit their little holy war against us? Nope. Just baffled looks. I guess if it gets too bad I could threaten the Retirement Home Gambit.
He wasn't elected to bring peace. He was elected to make us all take the sign of the beast!*
*Heard that back home on VA from ONE person who is a little off.
Years ago I had some people explain to me that the Euro is another piece in the One World Government conspiracy. These people were reliably informed that the stamp on the Euro - what do you call the pictures on coins and paper money? I don't know - anyway, the picture on the Euro would be a woman riding a seven-headed beast - straight out of Revelation! The Euro is another sign of the End Times!
And I said - um, there are still Christians in Europe, y'know, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want the Whore of Babylon on their coin. But obviously I was just in denial, or else I just didn't Believe enough. And these people were Catholic, which really pissed me off. The Catholic Church doesn't go in for the whole Left Behind-style literal reading of Revelation. I wonder what they'll think when the Euro collapses.
Why do people have to believe Obama's a Kenyan Muslim? Isn't the fact that he's a naive, narcissistic, unteachably incompetent asshole reason enough?
+1
One-world government conspiracies are superfluous. In my opinion, it is simply the nature of the organism of government itself that things will end up that way. No conspiracy could bring about, nor is any necessary to bring about, its inevitable existence. Once we get there, we will find that it does not work, but it is unavoidable that we will try; people will not give up their deep-seeded adherence to the idea that one man should rule another, until the ultimate, final, monolithic government has caused the deaths of billions of people, and its inherently violent nature has finally been laid bare for all to see and understand. This will mark the beginning of next, and final, Great Enlightenment. Not in our lifetimes, but that's the future that I see.

Bruce, your sarcasm detector is more fucked than a Prius's gas pedal.
The government messed up those gas pedals so people will buy GM and Chrysler.
I'll be honest. Ryan Sorba's comportment struck me as that of a closet case.
He's as queer as a three dollar bill.
My gaydar went off but I can also tell he does both.
The funniest part is that there is mounting evidence that homosexuality is inborn. This means nature or God (your choice) created people exactly the way they are, gay or straight.
I really, really, want to hear the homophobes (homomisos if you prefer) stretch their logic to "God made them this way, but he still wants us to hate them."
They don't have much difficulty with stretching logic.
If you are trying to say that innate desires automatically make something acceptable, then you've got your own logic stretching to explain.
It doesn't harm anybody else, and offense does not constitute harm, so it's acceptable.
I should say that this comment refers to Bruce's comment about Moynihan, in that he apparently viewed or views Moynihan as thinking CPAC is full of Nebraskan dowagers with visions of The Nairobian Candidate.
Given Moynihan's "conservatarianism", and the context of the above paragraph, I strongly doubt that.
I saw that on some television news program last night.
Ryan Sorba made my gaydar go off!
I have always felt that the whackier of conspiracy theories where deliberately contrived and perpetuated by those who control things in order to make all conspiracies theories seem ridiculous and to disguise the actual conspiracies which most certainly do exist. Create a bunch of chaff so that the wheat can not be distinguished from it.
As far as all of the theories that feed into the overall NWO conspiracy theory, well, this stuff is really done out in the open for all to see so it's kind of nutty to talk about secret conspiracy theories in that regard.
Really great conspirators hide their evidence well.
I read an article about the Stazi where it said they kept letting the air out of the tires of an activist. It was just being done so that if she started saying "and I think they let the air out of my tires again" everyone would discount all the other stuff she was talking about.
Frankly, considering the shit the government does right in plain view, I have no idea why people worry about conspiracies.

Should be quoted for truth.
okay, sorry. Am not very well versed in internet-ese.
I'm unable to find any reference to a book called _Worlds in Collisions_ on either Amazon or Library Thing. There was a well-known book by Immanuel Velikovsky called _Worlds in Collision_, singular, but it was a presentation of a strange astronomical theory, not a conspiracy theory.
This is an interesting article from the LvMI about Conspiracies for those who might be interested:
http://mises.org/daily/4110
I wasted 3 hours of my life reading that article and the associated eBook with it. Not only does he claim that libertarianism is a Left ideology, but that it is aligned with progressivism. I can understand the claim that the libertarian movement is not part of the political right, although I do not agree with such a claim, but to claim that libertarianism is a political philosophy of the Left? Not only that, but to mention it in the same sentence as the Progressives without any adjoiners of the forms "bitterly despises"? He also gives a lot of support to the idea that the US is almost solely responsible for the Pacific theatre of WW2, and that the US is largely responsible for the Cold War. What, the imperial Japanese and the soviet Russians were just enjoying an ice cream cone one particularly warm Sunday afternoon when we grabbed their guns and started firing on Pearl Harbor and Eastern European countries? Get real.
You don't know the true story!
In 1914, having tricked the Germans into attacking Belgium so they could better invade France to protect the Austrians from the Russians who were mobilizing to protect the Serbs from the Austrians, the conspirators (my ancestors) induced an Austrian, Adolf Hitler, to join a Bavarian regiment so he could ... well, it gets complicated after that.
This all started when the conspirators (my ancestors) induced Varus to campaign in Germany and then betrayed Roman plans to Arminius who they later had murdered to cover their tracks. Known as the Yehudi, these conspirators, having already concluded that a heretical sect of Jews would one day rule the known world from Rome, decided to create an enduring rift between the Latins and the Germans ...
I name names and reveal all in my book, "How the Jews are to Blame for Everything Bad that has Ever Happened" available here.
Just so you know Jeff Riggenbach does NOT blame "The Jews" for anything in this. It might be helpful to understand that Ludwig von Mises, the man for who the LvMI is named was himself Jewish. The LvMI is simply anti-war. They oppose just about any war you can think of. Think of a war and you can probably find an article on their site opposing that war.
Don't get your knickers in a knot.
It is just that statists constantly accuse the LvMI of all sorts of things. It is funny in a way because some of these accusations contradict one another.
I thought it was common knowledge that the British Crown and MI5 are behind all the conspiracies that implicate Masons, the Catholic Church, or Jews as the source behind NWO. All of which coincidently or not the Crown has motives from its imperial history for an NWO takeover and extermination of Jews, Catholics and Masons see NAZIs. Besides, Bush is not only a skull & bonesman but he's also related to the Queen therefore everything wrong in the world is Bush's fault because the SCOTUS took orders from the Queen and crowned W.Bush as King George.

Even with my sarcasm detector on, I cant figure out if you are serious or not...
Oh, on this one I must tell you I am serious. This one is well documented. Now, some take the conspiracy to levels far beyond what is rational but I do agree that the administration of FDR is responsible for getting the United States involved in the Pacific theater of the war.
I'll be serious for a moment.
Are you arguing that the Pacific War was not in America's interest or simply that Roosevelt, knowing he could not get a declaration of war, maneuvered the Japanese into attacking us?
I shudder to think what history would have been had we accepted Japanese hegemony in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia (and by extension German hegemony in Europe as we would likely not have entered the war without Pearl Harbor). Probably a much more terrible war, fought largely by America alone.
(This is without considering the fate of those occupied by the victorious Axis powers.)
How about those occupied by the "allies"?
Mao and Stalin are well known humanitarians. Half of Europe and a major chunk of Asia got to enjoy their particular beneficence(somewhere between 50 and 300 million were so moved they simply expired from the experience..)

One of the big problems I have with the 911 conspiracy theories is that they credit our government with being the masterminds of pure, absolute genius and skill. If our government is really *that* smart, then we're all being duped and I want my money back.
We'll have to start a counter-tea party to protest how capable our government is.
To be fair, those theories don't directly indict the government. According most truther theories I've seen, it could have easily been defense contractors or even completely private parties who would profit off the disaster and resulting wars.
So the fucking assholes who believe their governments' lies know only ONE fallacy. If Mr. Smith says, for instance, that the central bank's purpose is to benefit a corrupt elite and explains the mechanism, the retarded sheep will call Mr. Smith a 'conspiracy theorist' and think that by calling Mr. Smith a 'conspiracy theorist' they have refuted Mr. Smith's argument. Well, only FUCKING RETARDED SHEEP think that such a fallacy is a valid argument.
"One of the big problems I have with the 911 conspiracy theories is that they credit our government with being the masterminds of pure, absolute genius and skill"
Uh oh. So to blow up a couple of buildings you need 'pure absolute genius' ? That's news.
Uh oh. So to blow up a couple of buildings you need 'pure absolute genius' ? That's news.
Well, let's see F'r...the amount of collusion between at least hundreds of people which includes skillful organization, cooperation, agreement, planning, and a significant amount of people willing to die for some unknown gain in which their families would have to remain secretive and silent, relying on counter-intuitive human nature to eliminate any threat of leaks and retaliation against mastermind gov't...uh, yeah...I think that's pretty impressive, if not extradordinary.
What's your non-argument Cookie? That the government can't do anything successfully? Well, in reality the gov't is a pretty successful criminal organization. For starters you should explain how is it that the biggest military on earth failed to stop a couple of hijacked airliners. And no, saying that the military are to inefficient to 'defend Amerika' is not an argument.
too* inefficient
For starters you should explain how is it that the biggest military on earth failed to stop a couple of hijacked airliners.
Well, it's not as easy as, "We're under attack, shoot down commercial airliners potentially seen as a threat."
There were many obstacles, unprecedented situations and physical laws of time/physics involved, not to mention, the hijackers turned off their transponders.
Regardless, I can go over all the facts, but whether or not fighter planes had the ability to mobilize effectively or whether it was executed properly, doesn't come anywhere near suggesting or supporting the theory that 911 was an inside job or that the two are mutually exclusive.
Good explanation, Cookie.
"You have attributed conditions to villainy that simply result from stupidity"

Only statist and sheep pretentiously dismiss overt indications that an events official story is partly erroneous or a total consummated lie. Someone is not a "quack" to observe that WTC Building 7 collapsed perfectly from every corner at the same time, right into its own footprint. Imagine a person who had no knowledge of 9/11, and that individual watched the video of WTC Building fall into itself as it did, having never heard of 9/11, they assuredly would say "that was a controlled demolition. No plane hit Building 7. This coupled with the fact that never in the history of the world has a steal-structure high rise collapsed to fire. NEVER in the history of the world (unless you believe that the WTC building 7 fell to fire) has a STEAL STRUCTURE HIGH RISE collapsed do to fire, let alone, perfectly from every side, every corner, all at the same time, right into its own footprint. NEVER!!!!!!!!! How exactly that really happened I have no idea and would not presume to know.
What about Pearl Harbor? Anyone who has studied American history knows of that "conspiracy theory"...Roosevelt had information, he knew it was coming, they had the planes too close on the bases run-ways, the ships were not ready, all whilst belligerent nations are running amuck, he needed a reason to rock loose the prevailing American isolationist sentiment, etc. etc. etc.. What about the "Gulf of Tonkin" incident, Same deal. Is that conspiracy theory not today fact? What about Waco when Janet Reno burned all those little kids alive? Does anyone in their right mind really believe the FBI's official story? Most people dont want to think that the government lies, that governments do harm. They would rather live in a bubble surrounded by televisions watching American Idol.
a bubble surrounded by infowars isn't much of an improvement, yo.
Sorry Andy, but you need to get that colandar off of your head.
There are some serious problems with the official account of what happened on Sep.11,2001. Aaronovitch's book can provide comfort to those who wish to not look at or listen to those who point out the discrepancies. Those who look away do so at their peril. This is the most important topic of our time. This will destroy the United States if enough people ignore it.
Perhaps you should state what qualifies in your definition as a conspiracy? Certainly you wouldn't try and paint people who believe the president was secretly replaced by a look alike alien with people who are concerned about Russian and Chinese infiltration and spying?
Or people who point out the massive Soviet propaganda machine that infects much of the world today and has its fingerprints on many of current woes.

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/20010430/
It's only middling staff work.
The parts that involve killing Americans are likely "thowaway COAs" and the fake MiG / airliner shoot down COAs are too insanely complicated to ever work.
If you want to simultaneously believe in a government of evil, super geniuses and bumbling, neanderthal bureaucrats, I recommend you join a church. Church dogma about the supernatural is just as silly but better developed and much better illustrated.
Hey Jew - are you denying the existence of the conspiracy known as 'operation northwoods' ?
A military plan - not even a real plan but courses of action - is not a conspiracy except in a technical sense.
Freak out about it, if you like. Last time I checked, no real plan came of Northwoods and the non-existent plan was not carried into effect, so your great conspiracy was little more than the musings of Lemnitzer's staff.

My theory is that all conspiracy theories are false leads to throw people off from finding out that the Knights Templar control everything. Notice that stories about the Knights are few and far between? Why is that? The ONLY possible explanation is that they have completely hidden their organization from view so well that nobody believes they are still around. Disbanded by the Pope in 1312 my ass, they just went underground and are secretly manipulating everything still today. I defy anyone to dispute me using logic and science. You just have to open your mind about this and see through the Templar controlled conspiracy media.
You have fallen for OP BROADSWORD, one of our false flag operations. Because you believe in the Templars, our operations are able to proceed apace.
"I defy anyone to dispute me using logic and science. You just have to open your mind about this and see through the Templar controlled conspiracy media."
Ha ha. That's either a mediocre attempt at satire or a stupid straw man.
I guess none of the events described here can be considered 'conspiracy' either...

Moynihan seems to contradict himself about Owen Lattimore. Was his point that Lattimore was not a Soviet agent?
He was a spy for the Russkies. Stanton Evans' book makes that abundantly clear.
As for McCarthy, he was right on in most of his accusations. The historians who accuse him of a "witch hunt" are the ones committing fraud.
Here's a good link on McCarthy: http://historyhalf.com/lying-about-mccarthy/
Wouldn't surprise me if explosives [helped] took down the WTC. Conspiracy theorists think Muslims are too stupid to rig explosives or hijack planes?

Muawahahahahahahaha!
I am surprised, nobody mentioned USS Liberty...government and media definitely lied about that for about 40 years. Then some of the truth came out about that in the Chicago Tribune a couple years ago. The track record of the government effectively lying aabout some of these conspiracies is pretty big and we have seen how they tried to discredit honest people...like the sailors who were on board the USS Liberty.
Never mind. The sheep will ignore any actual evidence and keep on licking their governement's balls.
the fact that conspiracy theories are common hardly make me feel better than they're shaping policy decisions and the future of america today.
besides, conspiracists tend to think small. we need a grand unified conspiracy theory.
for example, the earth is not a globe but a flat plane stretching in all directions. and the plane truth is they've lied about everything to keep us contained and under control.
Michael,
I suppose I can't stop you from exploiting your former "hosts," (who gave to you and to your girlfriend very generously before you decided to move on up) for cheap political potshots, but a few corrections are in order: The woman was never my father's "girlfriend" and she most certainly never occupied half the apartment.
Classy of you to use our supposed lack of sophistication to elevate yourself and catapult your own paranoid theories.
One would never know from your snobby condescension how you once felt about your "hosts," nor how they (we) figured into your career trajectory.
Gi-Hong found Johanna's mittens and scarf. When I told him how you conducted yourselves after we all showed you so much genuine friendship and hospitality, he said, "You don't need friends like that," and threw the mittens and scarf in the garbage.
No doubt the REASON censors will delete this, out of sheer dread that your cronies will find out you once hung out with people of "indeterminate" politics.
I didn't know I was a petri dish. I thought I was your friend.
"My host, a Manhattan-bred journalist of indeterminate politics, seemed a magnet for such people. Slogging through my email archive, I find her complaining that her father's new girlfriend, who now occupied a large portion of the family's rent-controlled apartment, was "certain 9/11 was an inside job." A few months later, she sent me an email explaining that her sister was "bringing her boyfriend" to dinner and he was, alas, a man "who has repeatedly shown her films claiming 9/11 was an 'inside job.'""
This is what he said in his article. Whether you're pretending to be the host in the article or you really ARE the host, get it straight: his issue was with the beliefs of the people you supposedly draw to you. I'm not sure what exactly you're so upset about that you'd toss his g/f's property into the trash and then rant about it on the comments page of his article, assuming you are the actual host and not some artist or writer trying to get more exposure by pretending to be something you're not.
Won't someone think of the poor mittens and scarf!! What did they ever do to you?
I have a problem with your use of the term, "tin foil hat".
Everyone knows that only a steel V2K Cap will protect against mind control weaponry.
Dear Intrepid Demise,
I wouldn't expect YOU to know "what exactly" I am "so upset about," but you can be sure the one it was addressed to does. If there is any doubt about who I actually am, we can continue this, though it is the stuff of society novels, not political blogs. I am not the one pretending to be something I am not. I concede that what I wrote was "inappropriate," and irrelevant, and if I could delete it I would. But I am human. It hurts when you have friends and they abandon you cold because your indeterminate politics on some subject are disadvantageous.
And the reporting was shoddy and incorrect. My family was being mocked and I objected. Is that so hard to grasp?
Nick, Michael, anybody--can you delete it? Can you please never invoke my family again, and make the erasure complete? Thanks.
If what was said in the article was accurate, he wasn't mocking you, but stating the facts and that he didn't understand how people could come to that conclusion. If what he said was inaccurate (or an outright lie), I rescind my scolding and I completely understand your frustration.
Celia,
I for one very much enjoy this exchange and I agree that you do not need friends like Moynihan. I am not proud of this, but I have been a frequent reader/commenter on this blog for years and Moynihan is always quick to write a article filled with 80's style paranoia about how the commies were about to take over the world and the only way to stop them was to treat the American people to higher taxes and to set up military dictators around the world to torture their peasants(as long as they agreed to buy their tools of torture from Lockheed Martin, instead of Russia).
He never is the type of guy who will take strawmen(aliens, birthers, lizard people) and burn them down while refusing to acknowledge real lies surrounding Gulf Of Tonkin, USS Liberty, Operation Gladio, Operation Northwoods, MK Ultra, Warren Commission and the 9/11 Comission. The number of people who were actually on the 9/11 and Warren Commission who say they were rigged/lies/unfair/deceptive is long. To refuse to acknowledge and think about what these people say while focusing on hologram theories and "the Joos" is silly.
People who argue like this will be just as duplicitous in their personal affairs and it is not a surprise that this guy writes articles trying to make fun of you and your friends after you were nice to him.
The only compelling conspiracy theory I heard growing up was that Martin Luther King was complicit in his own assasination in a quid pro quo arrangement with J. Edgar Hoover. In return for Hoover not releasing his infamous sex tapes invloving King (which would destroy his family & reputation as a minister), King agrees to effectively martyr himself in return, ensuring that the civil rights movement continues without a charismatic leader -- thus slowing it down. The theory (like many ct's) provides this compelling "proof" to support its tenability: MLK, who was notoriously circumspect about snipers and assasination attempts, uncharacteristically chooses to go out onto the hotel balcony by himself; something that he supposedly never did.
Though I doubt this theory is true, I wouldn't put it past Hoover to consider making such a twisted overture.
I swear if I'm told one more time to "have an open mind" by shittards I know for a fact to be intellectually inferiour to me...
Apparently having an "open mind" these days entails entertaining every fucken idiotic conspiracy theory concocted by some loon claiming to be against the zeitgeist.
And yes. It IS disturbing professors hop onto these aimless exercises.
"I swear if I'm told one more time to "have an open mind" by shittards I know for a fact to be intellectually inferiour to me..."
Don't you mean "inferior"?
I think the biggest conspiracy of our time is Warty. How many of you have actually ever seen a picture of him? Try facebooking or myspacing Warty? Nothing. Nada. See what I mean? Warty is nothing more than a front for the Knights Templar to turn us all into a hedonistic pile of goo. We will all get into the 300 person circle jerk and never notice when Warty takes over the world.
I don't got your point. But thank you all the same.
