Recession For You, Boom Times For Federal Workers
When your neighbor loses her job, it's a recession. When you lose your job, it's a depression. And when federal workers not only keep their jobs but see their pay rise during a recession, it's something else altogtether. USA Today:
The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data.
Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.
Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector.
Bonus!: Since June, the federal government has increased employment by almost 10 percent, while the private sector has cut employment by over 6 percent. And which sector do you figure was more padded to begin with?

Dey took ur jobs!
federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded
If only.
Way back in the earliest days of the interwebs, there was "The Way of the Exploding Head," a rather crude but humourous site which featured 'shopped graphics of various famous folk having problems which would eventually enrage them, causing their heads to swell, crack, and eventually, well, explode.
I'd love to see it return, focused upon six-figure government flunkies. This is beyond an outrage....
Who else is going to gather statistics on how many jobs have been created or saved? You?
Thank God our Progressive Masters, the end results of thousands of years of moral and intellectual Progress, are getting the security they deserve as Our Betters.
Can we start calling THEM "Masters of the Universe" now?
I think you mean "Federal employees".

Yeah, I haven't seen a worker (that is, someone actually working) in any of the federal facilities I have worked in.
I think we're all Federal workers at this point ...
Federal Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your 6 figure salaries, lifetime tenure, massive retirement packages, and the trill of lording your power over the cattle!!
Perhaps there should be a database of these federal employees made available to businesses for the purpose of solicitation of sales and/or services.
There is: Federal Employees, 2008
Cool, thanks!
If it makes anyone feel any better, most federal jobs are rotten do nothing jobs that kill your soul. They are only rewarding for the slugs of the world.
Doesn't really make me feel better, but thanks for trying.
Hey, I've had rotten do nothing jobs that killed my soul. They didn't pay dick and there were no bennies. As to pensions, don't make me laugh.
Of course my employers were paying out of their own pockets, so it was probably easier for them that way.
With the short work weeks and copious amounts of vacation, federal workers have plenty of free time to pursue more rewarding interests. Of course I imagine most of them don't.
"If it makes anyone feel any better, most federal jobs are rotten do nothing jobs that kill your soul."
What an excellent reason to continue their funding and hiring.
I worked for years at a Maryland liquor store (one of the most over priced in town), and I swear at least 20% of our customers were federal agents or their spouses. (yeah, it's probably a high estimate, but tack on Federal contractors and I'd say it was safely a third).
My favorite was the DEA agent who was a couple years younger than me, drove a Titan and lived in a $400,000 house up the block. I carded him EVERY time he came into the store (and it obviously pissed him off).
Usually I'm above begrudging someone for having more toys than me, but when you make a big fat living putting people in jail for what they choose to put in their own bodies...well, fuck you.
You are my favorite person today.
Well, if it was in the part of Maryland which is the suburbs for DC, it would be at least 20%. DC is a company town, after all, and the company is the USG. Way higher if you include govt contractors.
Wow, congratulations on really sticking it to the man. He lives in a 400,000USD house and you got back at him by carding him every chance you had. Way to be a sore loser.
Once everyone works for the government, there will be no more recessions!
Yeah buddy! The more things change, the more they stay the same! LOL

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time ? in pay and hiring ? during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector.
Somebody has to be able to afford a house and college for their kids.
where would you rather have these people? locked up in federal office building or crusing the streets near the elementary schools? your choice.
The kids are locked up w/ govt employees (teachers), so there's no gain there.
We need to offer federal employees anti-efficiency bonuses. The less they do, the more they get paid. Then it's win-win for everybody.
I work for the feds through about June of every year. Does that count?
Feral employees pay taxes too.
Raised by SEIU wolves, no doubt.

Salaries go to employees, not surfs.
The less they do, the more they get paid.
You're a little late, I think.
Salaries go to employees, not surfs.
You so howley you don't even know you howley!
You mean haole?
It isn't even the salaries or the pensions that kill me.
What kills me is that every one of these pooh-bahs spent thousands of dollars of tax payer money redecorating their office.
Perks like that and other crap drive me nuts. Especially because none of that stuff ever trickles down to the feds who actually do the work.
Feral employees pay taxes too.
Not really. They don't have any not-tax-money-already to tax. Some is re-un-un-re-stolen, in a meaningless and wasteful display.
Brilliant.
...and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted
I don't believe that federal workers get overtime or bonuses, certainly not if they're making six-figure salaries.
Hah - you might be surprised. I know state and local "salaried" employees often get overtime, even if they're making $100k (and in California, *lots* of local employees make $100k). Bonuses in Fedworld, just like at lots of private companies, tend to go more to the higher-paid workers; the exception is that if Congress has to approve your job, you probably don't get a bonus.
This is nothing new - just another way that the Obama administration is like the Bush administration. Cato had the numbers: http://www.cato-at-liberty.org.....id-ascent/
Being a teenager with an allowance doesn't count as a job.
That was supposed to be a response to Joel.
The factoid that struck me: the Department of Transportation has 1,690 employees with salaries above $170,000. Does anyone think we get $287,300,000 of value out of them every year (not counting benefits and pensions)?
These Federal workers received these salaries because they are EXPERIENCED, very learned people!
(Uh, at least, that's what Tony said a few posts ago...)
A lefty Mexican cartoonist once published a cartoon where he assured that the "best men and women" man the government of Cuba. Maybe the "best men and women" of America man the government and deserve to make 3 times as more as the average worker in the US - I don't know.
