Reason Writers Around Town: Shikha Dalmia on ObamaCare and Forced Coverage
With unemployment rising and the economy swooning, ObamaCare has nothing going for it anymore. So why do Republicans seem so hopeless and hapless in defeating it? One reason, says Shikha Dalmia in her latest Forbes column, is that they have focused on the wrong issue. Instead of exposing the dangers of forcing Americans to purchase coverage, Republicans have droned on wonkishly about the "public option."
She writes:
But a mandate will fundamentally alter the relationship between Americans and their government. Instead of the government being accountable to them, they will become accountable to their government. No less than the Congressional Budget Office—a non-partisan government agency—once admitted as much. "A mandate requiring all individuals to purchase health insurance would be an unprecedented form of federal action, it noted. The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States."
If the government can force Americans to buy coverage on the threat of fines or even imprisonment—an option that Nancy Pelosi has pointedly refused to rule out—every other government diktat becomes small potatoes by contrast. In fact, it becomes necessary. If uninsured Americans must buy coverage, why shouldn't other Americans be taxed to subsidize them? Why shouldn't the insurance industry be required to sell them coverage? Why shouldn't government set insurance prices to ensure affordability? Why shouldn't doctors and hospitals be asked to charge only "reasonable" rates—or offer only government-sanctioned treatments? Nothing about ObamaCare fundamentally changes so long as the individual mandate remains intact….

Shikha's calling you out, Ron Bailey.
Let's get ready to rumble!
In broad principle, I'm not sure Dalmia and Bailey disagree. The employer-based health insurance system is generated by the tax codes that arbitrarily reward it. Shouldn't Dalmia and Bailey agree strongly on that point?
The whole point of Shikha's piece was a smackdown Repubs/Heritage for humping mandatory insurance, which Ron has been humping for a long time
"A mandate requiring all individuals to purchase health insurance would be an unprecedented form of federal action, it [the CBO] noted. The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States."
That's because doing so would have been struck down by the courts as unconstitutional faster than you can say "Repeal the 17th Amendment". However, right now is different because the government has been taken over by fascists.
They're opposing it badly because they don't oppose it.
Indeed, it's the only thing keeping the insurance lobby behind both party's efforts.
Dude, you know as well as I do that f there is something to benefit the Sheeple (thats us), then it means less profit for the medical giants. And since the medical giants have all the politicians in their back pockets, bought and paid for, it wont be!

I always wondered who these Sheeple were. Thanks for the clarification.
OH MY GOD HE"S GOING INTO CONVULSIONS!!! DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW CPR???
But... but... what about ER costs for the uninsured?!? Instead of paying X for that, let's pay X x 100 for universal coverage! omg free riders omg.
When I was young, we were out in the streets rioting against the military service mandate, which would send us to Vietnam to risk death. I don't understand why the young of today are not demonstrating against the insurance mandate, which would force them to buy lavish health insurance they do not need -- and mainly in order to subsidize the insurance of old folks who do need it.
Because the yutes are retarded. The liberals ensured that by taking over education in the 60s.

PS3, child, please. My generation may suffer from forms of brainrot, but we at least choose the superior forms of brainrot.
Like blonds and brunettes, you got to have both. Even a redhead is nice.
The Wii is the redheaded stepchild of any serious gamer
X-Box and PS3, HaH! Toys for the kiddies. PC GAMERS PWN!
Yes. Everyone should know the sheer excitement of repeatedly pressing F6.
Lot of good it did you. Vietnam lasted for 10 years and the draft didn't end until 1973.
Lester,
A illustrative anecdote. A very smart graduate student working for my wife kept coming into work with the flu. Possibly the swine flu. There was a low-cost clinic set up on campus to do the testing and administer Tamiflu or triage her into the (heavily-subsidized by the state) hospital. The checkup and Tamiflu dose was $40 dollars. When my wife suggested she go down there, instead of trying to make everyone else sick, she replied "I don't have health insurance."
I see that all the time. The young have been trained to believe that no health insurance means no health care. They seemingly cannot conceive of paying for anything health related out of pocket. When I talk about going to see a doctor without health insurance, most of them think I'm kidding.
God forbid anyone actually pay something directly for healthcare. They'd much rather pay exponentially more to the federal government in exchange for insufficient care because at least then they won't see that there are costs in life.
It never ceases to amaze me that people that can't fine $50 to pay for health care can always come up with $500 to fix their car.
On vacation in Alabama this summer and my son got sick. The local clinic didn't take our insurance, but for the visit, bloodtest and antibiotic shot like $70. Then we went to the Rx and got generic liquid antibiotic for $10.
Does anyone know if this bill will require doctors to accept all insurance? I know a lot of doctors in NYC don't take insurance because the repayment rates are so low.
I don't understand why the young of today are not demonstrating against the insurance mandate?
Two words: Guitar Hero.

Why would the Republicans oppose this? They are fanatical lovers of Big Gooberment, just like the Democrats. They just want to pass the stolen loot to different cronies.
Because a minority in the House can't do anything, and a minority of 40 in the Senate can't either?
The Republicans (and others) have succeeded in making the bill poll really badly. That may make moderate Senate Dems waver, but that's the only way to stop the bill. The Republicans are hopeless because they don't have the votes.
Elections have consequences.
Yeah but man, didn't it feel good to bash the shit out of those Republicans in the last election? Because after all they deserved it.
We're so much better off now.
OTOH, the Republicans have surrendered the right to claim that they still have any guiding principles. Their sole virtue at this stage of the game, is that they'll oppose the other team just because it's the other team.
Arguably "we should be in charge" and "oppose the other team" are guiding principles.
I believe taxes go towards government services and that seems to be a condition of lawful residence in the United States.
I buy taxes?
Obama is a socialist pig.
