Rand Paul Takes Polling Lead
Over at the blog In the Agora, Joshua Claybourn notes that libertarian (and Ron Paul offspring) Rand Paul has taken an early polling lead for the Republican nomination to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.). Paul has already raised far more money than his opponent, Kentucky's GOP establishment-backed Secretary of State Trey Grayson. But Paul has also been able to convert dollars into poll points. He has jumped 14 points in the last three months.
Claybourn, an attorney and writer just across the Ohio River in Evansville, Indiana observes:
Rand Paul is a strong states' rights advocate who wants the federal government out of people's lives. He opposes federal drug laws and says the U.S. government should not outlaw gay marriage because only churches should be in the marriage business. He is skeptical of foreign interventionism and doggedly Constitutional about any engagement. But more than anything he likes talking about fiscal issues and the need to scale back government intrusion in economics and reform the nation's fiscal policies…
Libertarian intrusions into Republican primaries are nothing new. But what separates Rand Paul from most other libertarian candidates (including his father) is that Rand is not a novelty act. He is a known commodity as a long-time practicing ophthalmologist in western Kentucky. Along with tremendous intellectual heft, Rand is a polished public speaker with a professional presence. In short, he is an ideal candidate for the libertarian cause.
All of which would explain why the national GOP is trying like hell to make sure he doesn't get the nomination.

I hope the Republican establishment eventually learns a lesson. Too bad it didn't happen last night.
STALINIST!
I'm going to Paul's townhall meeting this Saturday in Louisville. Any suggestions on what question to ask?
If he became an opthamologist instead of a dentist because most everyone in Ky has more than one eye?
+2
And only one tooth?
Ergo the +1
It's a toothbrush in Kentucky and Arkansas. Any where else and it would be a teethbrush.
Ask him if he is going to continue the proud Bunning tradition of gently pissing himself before passing out in chambers.
Ask if he would support his state's electoral voting apparatus being reformed from a winner-take-all to proportional representation.
On second thought, don't ask that; it will make more virulent enemies on both sides if he answers Yes.
So just ask him if he supports the compulsory serving of asparagus at breakfast.
Bunny, ask what his position on fleet-footed minorities is. Videotape the answer and post it on Youtube.
I though Libertarians were opposed to legacy / dynasty politicians (e.g., the Kennedys, Bushes, etc.). Why do the Pauls get a pass?
Because the Kennedys and Bushes are turds and douches. That's why.
lIBeRtArIaNs are opposed to conceited idiots holding political office. Most officials prove themselves to be just that during the campaigns, if not well before. When Paul does so publicly, you will see wrath.
Because the Pauls don't qualify as such. Ron Paul is a Representative from Texas; Rand Paul is running for Senator of Kentucky. And as the article indicates, Rand qualifies in his own right. Surely you don't suggest that Dubya can say the same?
You thought that, eh? all by yourself?
Shut the fuck up, Meta4. We takes what we can gets.
Goddammit. I forgot middle schools let out at 3. Thanks anyway, H&R! (Xeones clearly exempted.)
Just kidding, Fr. You could ask him if he's in favor of a strong dollar - if he is that would set him apart from his father. If he's in favor of a weak dollar that would set him apart even further.
(And Warty!)
Meta 4,
To correct you, libertarians are oppose to "all" politicians.
Politician - a seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favor or retaining power than about maintaining principles.
Neither Ron Paul or his son are politicians. They are the opposite. They want to reduce the size and power of government. They are not representatives for the sake of fame or fortune. They would rather be practicing medicine.
This is a rarity. 95%+ of all representatives are politicians.
"Neither Ron Paul or his son are politicians. They are the opposite. They want to reduce the size and power of government. They are not representatives for the sake of fame or fortune. They would rather be practicing medicine."
Stormtrooper: Let me see your identification.
Obi-Wan: [with a small wave of his hand] You don't need to see his identification.
Stormtrooper: We don't need to see his identification.
Obi-Wan: These aren't the droids you're looking for.
Stormtrooper: These aren't the droids we're looking for.
Obi-Wan: He can go about his business.
Stormtrooper: You can go about your business.
Obi-Wan: Move along.
Stormtrooper: Move along... move along.
This comment was so clever, I only yawned twice before skipping the second half and moving on.
"They would rather be practicing medicine."
So why don't they?
Altruism, the Libertarians friend.
I'd rather read a book than take out the trash, but sometimes you have to get the chores done.

Good for Rand.
Whoever wins the GOP primary will win the seat. Good luck to him. He'd be a huge upgrade over Bunning.
Mortimer Snerd would be a huge upgrade over Bunning (who was a hell of a pitcher in spite of being a crackpot).
A fucking potted pot would be... about the same as Bunning, actually.
I have lived in Kentucky all my life. I don't think things are going to go as well as we might hope once the 'base' gets a whiff of the rest of the message. Most 'conservatives' in rural areas of the commonwealth are social cons who have no problem living off the government, disability, work comp or auto insurance, or helping others to do the same. His fiscal austerity may not play as well as we would like. However, his non-hatred of homos and willingness to listen to pot legalization is what will do him in. As a resident I hate to say it but I'd be shocked if he wins. Encouraged, but still shocked.
I agree with Little Papi. His description of Kentucky "conservatives" is dead-on.
LP, are you aware that those country bumpkins are the ones growing all the pot?
Which is why the are against legalization.
Um, I um ~read~ about these dope growers out in the state once. When I was in college. Anyway, the few who vote probably adhere more to an authoritarian philosophy than a libertarian one. Most are very small time growers. They also subsist on disability, work comp, etc. While you would think that would make them socialists, their main reasoning in voting Republican is that they are 'not pussies'. That is how they can lie about not being able to work, pawn the hydrocodone they got from saying they were injured in a car wreck and still wear a "Livin 4 Jesus" t-shirt.
And the GOP establishment backs Grayson, who WAS A DEMOCRAT.
WTH is wrong with that picture?
I'll vote for Paul, thank you.
Eek!
Run. I'll hold him off, my dear leporidite.
SF, aren't many of the growers already corporate farmers of other stuff, who may stand to gain from legalization?
No, my understanding is that the vast majority of our marijuana crop is grown in our state parks on the sly. We have a lot of hydro as well, but that could come from anywhere.
There is, however, a large push to legalize non-psychoactive hemp and the fear is that it would be used as a cover for high-THC crop (i.e. grown together), but that betrays a fundamental ignorance of marijuana cultivation so profound as to be disingenuous.
Sure, he's a practicing opthalmologist, a polished public speaker, a proven fundraiser.
But he's also a RACIST!
I wonder how the inevitable accusations of racism will play with the hillbillies described by Li'l Papi. Plus, or minus?
It all depends on turn-out demographics. The racism stuff will play well in Louisville and Lexington, but nowhere else. The hillbillies want their Oxy and aren't smart enough to realize that their SSI checks might stop coming. The city liberals will hear "libertarian" and think GOP baby-starver. East KY will be suspicious of his Western KY ways, no part of the state will consider him a "true" Kentuckian (re-verse carpetbagger!)
Kentucky is a fucking mess. It would be best if he flew under the radar and garnered the "don't hate him as much as the other guy" vote.
"But he's also a RACIST! "
In what way? Please be specific.
Mostly because he disagrees with The One.
"But he's also a RACIST!"
Kindly source that statement, please.
RC Dean was just saying what will inevitably be said in a character assassination attempt against Paul, probably stemming from the same accusation made last year against his dad.
Ah, all Evansvillians unite in our shitty-ness. We may even lose our horse track, which is about the only thing we've got. Unless you want to gamble next to oxygen tanks at Aztar.
I've never heard of this In the Agora business. I'll investigate.
Your horse track? Did you get one I wasn't aware of, Hoosier?
Like the powers that be will allow him to win.
I hope Dr. Paul Jr. doesn't fly small planes for the next year.
Ayn Rand + Ron Paul = Rand Paul?
Interesting....
It's short for Randal, if that helps.
It would be best if he flew under the radar and garnered the "don't hate him as much as the other guy" vote.
Yes. A billion yard signs and no public appearances. This is how KY's leaders are chosen.
Rand is not racist, and he is not for the legalization of drugs. He is a Republican and has never been a Libertarian. Read his issues, it just shows that none of you have.
he is not for the legalization of drugs.
You're mistaken.

he is not for the legalization of drugs. He is a Republican and has never been a Libertarian.
You may have mistaken your audience. If you're with the campaign, we're fukked.
Shut the fuck up, new guy. We know more about him than you do.
You were once new. Is that how you developed such a toxic epidermal layer?
Xeon Pigs, all of you!
annnnd GOOOO Rand!! We need some of that here in Florida..
The people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky are going to lead the fight to wrest power from Washington, DC back to the states and individuals as the Constitution properly requires. We've been screwing up our country for too long by letting the representatives and senators use the Constitution for their Capitol doormat for too long, and the damage it's causing is obvious. We need to send MANY more people like Dr. Paul to make our country once again one that our founders would be proud of.
What the GOP needs to realize and soon is that libertarians are not middle of the road Democrats. The fundamental difference isn't just our free market love; it's our fundamental distrust of government and our desire that it be very limited in scope.
He... has never been a Libertarian.
Wow. Kentuckian has just flashed some serious libertarian cred.
Instead of attacking him, why don't you persuade him? You can do that, can't you?
Pro Lib, you sound like some kind of fuckin' comm-oo-nist.
It's a fair cop.
I believe a series of factors are combining to make the odds of a Rand Paul victory in the primary and general election significantly better than one might assume. The current political and economic climate may just make voters question the party establishment enough to say that new ideas and personnel are what is needed. Besides, many people enjoy poking a stick in the eyes of those people who hold the reins of power, particularly in tough economic times. I don't know what odds the bookmakers are giving, but I think betting on a Rand Paul victory may be a very smart wager.
A third party? YES!
Doug Hoffman garnered 45% of the vote in the NY 23rd; more than William Buckley in his NY Senate Run on the Conservative line. The National GOP is afraid of any politician that espouses true American Values; they are doing everything they can do to discredit any party other than a Demoncrap or a Republicum.
Even today on El Rushbo's propaganda show, he discredited any third party. But if we want to reshape the system, we will need additional parties, not to modify the existing one. (Yes, Goldwater was correct in his observation.) Rand Paul is another politician who can lead this movement and the LP is the party that can draw from the moderates of the Republicums and Demoncraps. It is going to be an effort to get the message out, but Rand and Ron did it. After all, Ron almost succeeded in reshaping the Republicum party. There was certainly an influence on Republicum policy.

Hoffman wasn't really a third party guy though. He was the only Republican in the race. He just didn't get the official nomination from the party. If he had been elected, he most likely would've voted the Republican line as much as any other R.
One more time, Freeman. A little slower this time, if you please.

Come again?
Yes!
America needs a SECOND party!
Wow, Libertarian? Comes from the word Liberty. Not very many Americans believe in Liberty, do they?
As a matter of fact, yeah, from what I can see most Americans are horrified by the idea of liberty. They like to have it in their pledges and anthems, but the actual article - oh my God the horror. I have taken to calling myself a classical liberal - mainly because it confuses retards from both ends of "the political spectrum".
I've lived in KY all my life, and so have many branches of my family since before it was founded. My 85 year father, and World War II vet, put a Rand Paul sticker on his car. This was the first time in his life that he put any sort of sticker on his car. He asked me where to get the sticker, I didn't ask him if he wanted one. I think there's hope.
When marriage doesn't require a license and divorce doesn't require a court room than than the Gov't should get out of the marriage business but not until than. As long as marriages are legal contracts they should legislated.
The only legislation needed -- if it IS indeed needed -- is to obligate the government to respect the marriage contract like any other contract. On the other hand, what is NOT needed is for the government to oblige NON-PARTICIPANTS to perform under a contract, to which they are not signatories.
"But what separates Rand Paul from most other libertarian candidates (including his father) is that Rand is not a novelty act. He is a known commodity as a long-time practicing ophthalmologist in western Kentucky."
Ron Paul a novelty act? An "unknown commodity"? In his own district, he delivered hundreds of babies as a practicing Obstetrician, and formerly served in the air force. By the time he ran for President (either time) he had served multiple terms in the House. So I don't understand where the writer of the above quote tries to hang the "novelty act" label on him.
The reason the GOP establishment has disdain for Rand Paul is twofold.
1) He's proving that the GOP needs him more than he needs the GOP. For party establishmentarians, that's a massive blow to their super-sized egos.
2) His last name is Paul. Like it nor not, he's going to be tarred and feathered by the inside-the-Beltway types with every controversial statement that his father has ever made.
From what I've read of Rand Paul, he seems like a fairly good candidate, and certainly better than his father. The question is a matter of how much he can get his campaign to stand on its own merits and not on those of the current Ron Paul base.
Randal Paul for president 2020-or-so.
Kentuckians have a chance to lead this nation back to its roots. I can only hope more recognize this than not.
Rand Paul 2010!
Rand Paul has left his father's ideals behind. His 11/19 press release calls for the abandonment of the ideals of liberty. He wants to INCREASE the size of military spending. I can't support him anymore.
