Nobel Committee Defends Award to Obama, Who Has Created "A World With Less Tension."
The head of the Norwegian panel that awarded President Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize defended the choice in really lukewarm language. The AP reports that Thorbjorn Jagland cites "Obama's efforts to heal the divide between the West and the Muslim world and scale down a Bush-era proposal for an anti-missile shield in Europe" and concludes:
"All these things have contributed to — I wouldn't say a safer world — but a world with less tension."
Over at The Daily Beast, Elaine Lafferty reports on one of the other Nobel finalists, the Afghan doctor Sima Samar, and makes a strong case that she should have gotten the prize. Certainly, Samar's efforts at bringing health care to her misbegotten country earned her the ire of communists and Taliban leaders alike, deserve to be better known. A snippet:
Openly opposed to religious extremism and questioning Sharia law, Samar has noted that high incidence of bone fragility among Afghan women is due to an absence of sunlight because of the forced wearing of the burqa. She was driven from office by death threats when a Mullah announced a fatwa on her and called her Afghanistan's Salman Rushdie.

"A World With Less Tension."
But I spend my days now filled with seething rage against the latest travesties from this idiot administration - I'm hardly less tense.
I other words - Obama just gave the world a "happy ending"
+1, beat me to it (pun intended)
My Vietnamese massage parlor should get a peace prize too, relieving tension and bridging cultural divides.
I would have expected less, i don't know, pussified reasoning from someone with an awesome name like "Thorbjorn."
"Less tension"? Perhaps he has confused the real world with some online thing he's doing.
heal the divide between the West and the Muslim world
I knew it! The Norwegians think Obama is a Muslim!
In addition to Obama being Teh Coolness!!1!1, Republicans are unlikely to issue a fatwa against the Nobel Committee for awarding him the Peace Prize. So he has that going for him.
Xeones, a man named Thorbear should be carving the blood eagle at all times, or having his arm bitten off by a wolf, or something like that.
Agreed, Warty. And, ""All these things have contributed to ? I wouldn't say a safer world ? but a world with less tension" is not exactly the fiercest of war-cries.
Sima Samar, you fucked up. You actually accomplished something worthwhile.
That video certainly is chock full o'reason.
As many have noted, he got the award for "not being Bush." I think this true. One cannot read any leftwing commentary about Obama without it devolving into a rant about Bush.
How sad it must be to stand in another man's shadow and to be defined as not being him. As things stand now, Obama will never be anything more than foil in Bush's story.
Perhaps this is met. Great people in history act and act decisively. Whether history eventually judges Bush acted wisely or not, it will nevertheless have to record that he did act and that he did change the world. I very seriously doubt it will record the same of Obama. We rapidly forget leaders who temporize.
I'm really curious as to what new information "history" would need in order to judge that Bush acted wisely. They say that patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, but seeing the behavior of Bush dead-ender apologists since, oh, 2007 or so, I suspect we have to add waiting for the judgement of history to the list of scoundrel refuges.
Think of it this way: without the arrogant incompetence of the Bush administration, there would be no President Obama and Dem supermajorities in Congress. Even a partisan hack can understand that.
By this logic, Nikita Khrushchev should have won a Nobel Peace Prize for not being Stalin.
Are you implying George W. Bush is a 'great person,' simply because he acted? Of course history remembers people who act, wouldn't you say that was George W. Bush's entire motivation for invading Iraq? He could give two shits if he brings anything to Iraq, he just wants to be remembered as a 'great person' wartime president.
It's sad that history only remembers assholes who act, instead of the presidents who preside over peaceful fruition and expansion. It gives these assholes motivation to be even bigger assholes.
Luckily for us, Obama will be remembered as the first black president. I'm not looking forward to the next president after Obama, who will have to start an ego satisfying war to be remembered for anything.
Great people in history act and act decisively. Whether history eventually judges Bush acted wisely or not, it will nevertheless have to record that he did act and that he did change the world.
Yeah, well, the same thing could be said of Hitler. Presumably the verdict of history is still out on him?
I don't think Shannon's point is to say what a great President Bush was (although maybe she is saying that?). I think the point is that Bush is someone who will be remembered, maybe hatefully, but Obama will never be remembered as more than "that guy that took over AFTER BUSH." Which is probably true.
Shannon has praised Bush in the past. The zebra done don't changed its stripes.
Tulpa,
I suppose Bush could be seen favorably by history if Iraq and Afghanistan were to become glorious, self-sustaining liberal nations, with robust economies and their own respective Disney parks. While that seems quite unlikely, it's not impossible.
Of course, some of the means used to accomplish those goals were. . .unsound.
some of the means used to accomplish those goals were. . .unsound.
I don't see any means at all, sir.
Where's Ford's prize for not being Nixon?
Where's Ford's prize for not being Nixon?
Where's my prize for not being ANY of those goons?

Suddenly I see a connection between the peace prize and the health care bill:

Of COURSE there is less tension. All we had to do was give in to Russian demands in Eastern Europe. Also to give in to a tyrant trying to illegally seize power in central america.
It takes two to make an argument. You want peace? just give in! Anyone who says otherwise is just a chickenhawk.
The White House's support for Zelaya, wasn't "caving in", they supported him immediately after his expulsion from Honduras. Not that I support his position on Honduras at all (in fact I've vocally opposed it right on these here thredz) but it wasn't an act of caving. He likes the Chavistas.
I am certainly feeling less tension now that those nasty Poles and vile Czechs have no prospect of neutralizing my missiles.
The delusional fuckers don't realize that it added to the mockery of Obama in the US. Further, it made those that don't like the guy even more angry.
So how is that lessening of tension going?
The Europeans are less tense, because now they think they have a president that will just do their bidding. "Please, go defend our oil in the Middle East. Without our participation. Thank you."
Uh, wasn't that exactly what Bush did?
It would be easier to keep blaming Bush for everything if the guy didn't so totally retire. If you Google for news on Bush, you'll find that the biggest story is speculation whether he is going to start his own Twitter feed. Seriously.
I blame Woodrow Wilson for pretty much everything, and he's pretty seriously retired at this point.
