Reason Writers Around Town: Peter Suderman in the New York Post on Democratic Dissent Over Health-Care Reform
In Sunday's New York Post, Reason associate editor Peter Suderman takes a look at Democratic divisions over health reform, and concludes that on health-care reform, Democrats have become their own worst enemy:
As health-care reform struggles to stay afloat, Democrats are desperate to pin the blame on Republicans. But the truth is, no matter how much Democrats gripe, it's their own fault.
With the passing of Ted Kennedy, Democrats have only 59 votes in the Senate, one less than they need to break a filibuster. Until this week, Democrats held out hope that at least one Republican would sign on. But when Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus finally released his plan on Wednesday, Olympia Snowe, the most likely GOP vote, quickly backed out.
That leaves Democrats with just one option: Go it alone. And that won't be easy. Because a party that not long ago was united behind a leader and a purpose—guaranteeing health insurance to all Americans—has, in just a few short months, descended into disarray.
Whole thing, including a list of Democratic dissenters, here.

Why do you hate black people, Suderman?
I'm not dead yet!
"That leaves Democrats with just one option: Go it alone. And that won't be easy. Because a party that not long ago was united behind a leader and a purpose-guaranteeing health insurance to all Americans-has, in just a few short months, descended into disarray."
As a good liberal Peter, I am sure this will come as a shock to you, but the reason why they are in disarray is because their policies are really unpopular. Change the poll numbers for Obamacare and it would be passed by now with Republican moderates voting for it as well. Instead, it is an unpopular poorly thought out poorly explained bill that is political poison to everyone but those in the most yellow dog Dem districts.
Newsflash, Dems unwilling to commit political suicide by passing unpopular bill with no bi-partisian cover. That is not disarray Peter, that is survival instinct.
Dissent is patriotic!
Healthcare is Dead!!
This is all politics. Republicans don't want Obama to be the hero in anything...no matter what good/bad it does to the country.
They delayed the vote and Now there is a filibuster that the PUBLIC WILL be ok with.
CONSERVATIVES have it right.
Libertarians have it wrong.
A Conservative wants the status-quo...and they've got it. They'll be ok and things will move on.
Conservatives understand that in order to have a "Thats not my problem" society you must have a police state simply because as more and more people become disenfranchises more people will turn to crime. Conservatives are aware of this and are willing to give up some (if not most) civil liberties to maintain the status-quo.
Libertarians want civil liberties and the "That's not my problem" society. You can't have BOTH.
Why?
Because once you take away welfare, public education, healthcare, social security, medicare, government regulations, and all of the other social entitlements more people will be dis-enfranchised. This will lead to a rise in crime.
The future of America: !!! Law Enforcement
!!!
That's right, don't send ur kids to college...those jobs are going over seas anyway. Beside, with the elimination of public education, there will be more and more drones in our society.
Have your kids become cops. Even conservatives know that the PEOPLE with GUNS will have to be taken care of. Conservatives ONLY look down on teachers and trade unions. NOT POLICE Unions. And their right!
Libertarians want something that just won't happen.
You gotta pick one:
A> Civil Liberties
B> The "That's not my problem that other people get sick and have no money to send their kids to school...i ain't paying for it" attitude.
Don't worry Libertarians. You'll come around.
Do you know what the definition of a CONSERVATIVE IS?
It's a former Libertarian that Got Mugged.
Shut the fuck up, Alice Bowie.
Isn't Massachusetts trying to rush through a bill to appoint someone to fill Dead Teddy's seat?
disenfranchises
Another of those pesky words that liberals don't understand the definition of...
It is RC. But if the Dems pass Obama care without a single Republican vote, then they own healtcare lock stock and barrel. I think the thought of having every Obamacare horror story turned into a campaign commercial in 2010 or 2012 is going to give enough Dems from red states pause enough to vote it down. To get it through, they are going to have to do it through reconciliation, which will damn near cause a revolution.
New York Post
DO
NOT
WANT.
What's the matter 0%...don't like the truth ?
Conservatives understand that in order to have a "Thats not my problem" society you must have a police state simply because as more and more people become disenfranchised more people will turn to crime.
"Your honor, I swear I never would have mugged that poor old lady if only we had a public option."
Alice, do you have brain damage?
"Conservatives understand that in order to have a "Thats not my problem" society you must have a police state simply because as more and more people become disenfranchised more people will turn to crime."
And we all know creating the welfare state in the 1970s reduced crime. Or maybe it caused an explosion of dependence and criminal activity that practically made our cities unlivable.
It's not the truth Alice, it's your idiotic ramblings and not much else. Every time there's a health care thread you post and haven't been right about one damn thing.
It's not the truth Alice,
Fine, then lets see how it will pan out.
The future is for conservatives ... we'll see how your 'Civil Liberties' will survive.
Every time there's a health care thread you post and haven't been right about one damn thing.
You and others on this site do not share my opinion. We won't know if I'm (or you are) right/wrong until something (or nothing) happens.
With all respects. We have a different opinion to a solution for a common problem. I don't know if either of us is truly right or wrong.
"What's the matter 0%...don't like the truth ?"
No I don't like the truth that in the past you have demonstrated clear cut racism.
Oh, and that brain damage thing.
...once you take away welfare, public education, healthcare, social security, medicare, government regulations, and all of the other social entitlements more people will be dis-enfranchised. This will lead to a rise in crime.
So, the first 100+ years in this country before any of those things existed meant higher crime rates than once those policies were enacted? You really should stop talking.

Let's see what it's like once you take them away.
Look. I hope that when these things are ultimately taken away (and it won't affect people in my social class) that the rabble will stay quiet and content.
I don't want to be a victim of crime either.
I may be wrong, but taking things away is a completely different thing.
@ Alice Bowie
Don't worry. We got guns.
I don't want to be a victim of crime either.
Nobody does. Welfare states aren't historically associated with low crime rates, though.
If you don't want to be a victim of crime, then take personal responsibility for your safety. Its the only way to be sure.

I do, I live in a suburb far away from this.
My property taxes are high, the property value is high, and is very low in crime.
And the cops are real real real tough on strangers
"And the cops are real real real tough on strangers"
So who is your sockpuppet master?
I think the thought of having every Obamacare horror story turned into a campaign commercial in 2010 or 2012 is going to give enough Dems from red states pause enough to vote it down.
Only one problem with that scenario. There won't be any horror stories yet, as the scheme will not become law until after the next two elections. The damage will be in terms of perceived, potential horror stories. The Dem's opposition will fully exploit those fears, as they are doing now.
I don't think any version of ObamaCare will pass. Because of this, coupled with Obama's fading star power, I'm ready to officially take that bet with me to Vegas? Who's with me? What are my odds?
Come on now. Let's win one for the rummy!
Hey Ryan,
I've got FULL ODDs on the PASS LINE for you.
THere's no way this character will get 2012.
In fact, I'm get'n ready 4 a FULL REPUBLICAN CONGRESS in 1 1/2 years.
I've just come to the conclusion that I should just change my vote to the winning team here in american...THE CONSERVATIVES !!!
That's what keeps America young and Pretty!
"Beside, with the elimination of public education, there will be more and more drones in our society."
Ok i'm convinced your a troll
Hey Alice Bowie,
WTF is wrong with you?
Because once you take away welfare, public education, healthcare, social security, medicare, government regulations, and all of the other social entitlements more people will be dis-enfranchised. This will lead to a rise in crime.
That's why we libertarians want to see all the rabble on cheap, legal, mind-numbing, pacifying drugs. You could use some yourself.
That's why we libertarians want to see all the rabble on cheap, legal, mind-numbing, pacifying drugs.
If u look at the proliferation of heroin in our inner cities (Specifically NYC, Chicago, Detroit, etc.) to a certain type of people...you'll see the same motivation.
And...it was never considered a problem...as long as it was us.
Once, the suburban-ites started coming over the bridge, well, that called for a drug war.
"Because once you take away welfare, public education, healthcare, social security, medicare, government regulations, and all of the other social entitlements more people will be dis-enfranchised. This will lead to a rise in crime."
Yes, without the welfare state doing its noble work the poor would be doomed to live in dangerous neighborhoods wracked by violent crime and gang warfare, where lack of economic opportunity, shitty educations, and a cultural environment that has had hope for better things beaten out of it would lead thousands of young men to prison or an early grave. Thank God we don't have that happening in this country.
And...it was never considered a problem...as long as it was us.
Look, it's not my fault they've made life choices that have led to their not being able to afford a nice snifter of brandy every evening. Just like it's not my fault that you can't spell the word, "you".
What is it that makes conservatives allergic to responsibility? Do you think that's how to win votes? You're like a soldier that just lays low until the fight is over. It's really not very attractive. Your time will come around again. It's really sad that you have so little to recommend yourselves. I know I'm being partisan, but you really do disgust me. You're a bunch of cowards, and you make me sick.
Sorry, Craig, you're going to have a hard time getting an answer about why conservatives do what they do. The folks hanging out at this blog are libertarians not conservatives.
