The syndicated columnist looks at California's 2010 gubernatorial race, and proclaims that:
An especially intriguing candidate in a colorful field is Tom Campbell. Colorful he is not. "Talk softly and carry a small calculator" could be his motto. What glitter, however, are his résumé and agenda.
He has a Harvard law degree and a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago, where his faculty adviser was Milton Friedman. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Byron White. Working in the Reagan administration in 1983, in the wake of a severe recession, he assumed Reagan would lose in 1984 ("proof of my political acumen," he says; Reagan carried 49 states) and accepted a professorship at Stanford's law school. He represented Silicon Valley in Congress for five terms. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the Senate in 1992. He won the nomination in 2000 but lost the election. His third statewide run might work because, after Arnold Schwarzenegger's childlike faith in personality as the conqueror of problems, blandness may be charismatic. […]
If Campbell is nominated, he can win, but if Californians were sufficiently rational to nominate him, their state would not be shambolic.

The comments to the Will editorial are just depressing. California is in trouble because it can't raise taxes fast enough and the government has been ruined by radical, free market Republicans. It astounds me that people are that stupid. And worse still, these are Washington Post readers. It is not like it is 24ahead.com or whatever it is.
It not just their stupidity. When I read liberal commenters in places like the Washington Post, not only are they stupid but also they are so pissed off. They won the damned election and own the government. But still they are pissed off all the time and everything is "the free market" or some simile thereof's fault. They are totally dogmatic, narrowminded and completely unself aware.
Isn't Tom Campbell the guy who singlehandedly destroyed California's system of governance by trying to tell people they were going to have to, you know, *pay for* their government programs? Or was that some other radical wacko?
I don't know the guy but if Will likes him my guess is that he will errudite and thoughtful and proceed to raise taxes through the roof to balance the budget to support 90% of what liberals want so that he can be called a centrist. Only a complete overhall of government will save California. That will not happen under anyone that impresses Will.
Seriously, though, the dude's a politician. He ain't gonna save shit, and the only question is how long California will remain a Mad Max-esque wasteland before its final, inevitable plunge into the ocean.
The only thing that will save California is a complete meltdown of their government. I am not sure how that happens short of an invasion. That of course is already happening but it is coming from Mexico and contributing to the problem not solving it. They need Sherman burning the whole place down and starting over not Juan filling out his welfare paperwork.
When did this "he went to harvard he must be qualified" crap begin? I don't recall anyone caring that Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar or that GHW Bush went to Yale, or that Reagan didn't go to an Ivy League.
Is there anything more pathetic than being older than 40 and still living on your college resume?
"The Rhodes Scholar thing was brought up constantly, as was Reagan's attendance at mere Eureka college."
Now that I think of it, maybe you are right about the Rhodes Scholar thing. But still, it seems more prevelent today. Who the fuck cares where the guy went to college? The question is does he have any sense and what is he saying now.
John, are you feeling okay? You been hangin with WhackAlone over the weekend? You're bein kinda cranky 'bout the metsicans this morning and that's just not normal for you IIRC.
The cause of liberty might be advanced a bit further in California if Reason spent less time promoting Republican candidates and more time promoting Libertarian candidates.
"Being over 40, living on your high school football glory, and selling women's shoes."
Say what you want about the Al Bundies of the world, but no hasbeen former high school jock has ever bankrupted the country. That puts them above former Harvard Law Review Editors.
Attending the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, Ford played center and linebacker for the school's football team[15] and helped the Wolverines to undefeated seasons and national titles in 1932 and 1933. The team suffered a steep decline in his 1934 senior year, however, winning only one game. Ford was the team's star nonetheless, and after a game during which Michigan held heavily favored Minnesota (the eventual national champion) to a scoreless tie in the first half, assistant coach Bennie Oosterbaan later said, "When I walked into the dressing room at half time, I had tears in my eyes I was so proud of them. Ford and [Cedric] Sweet played their hearts out. They were everywhere on defense." Ford himself later recalled, "During 25 years in the rough-and-tumble world of politics, I often thought of the experiences before, during, and after that game in 1934. Remembering them has helped me many times to face a tough situation, take action, and make every effort possible despite adverse odds." His teammates later voted Ford their most valuable player, with one assistant coach noting, "They felt Jerry was one guy who would stay and fight in a losing cause."[16]
Ford was the only really high class athlete ever to hold the office of the President, although you can only count 20th Century ones since the idea of a college or professional athlete didn't exist before then. And his reward was Chevy Chase making him out to be a klutz.
I think Abe Lincoln was regarded as unnaturally strong, and a (locally) famous wrestler in his youth, but he had quite a size advantage (as, for that matter, did Washington).
Ford famously fell down those stairs, but people never mention that he landed on his feet, rolling right into a hand shake.
"When did this "he went to harvard he must be qualified" crap begin? I don't recall anyone caring that Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar or that GHW Bush went to Yale, or that Reagan didn't go to an Ivy League."
My question would be when did this "higher education means absolutely nothing" crap began, but I suspect the answer is "when people started deciding that their lack of higher education made them experts on every subject."
Education alone is meaningless. I have an advanced degree and research experience in academia and have seen idiocy on par with that you see among the uneducated. You either are rational or you are not, it appears.
Most teams called the MLB position (or one of the two LBs in a 6-2, the other being "fullback") "center" in those days. It was the position the snapper was expected to play on defense.
Also, Eisenhower was a very good player on the West Point football team.
IIRC, that was until he tore his knee up - or some such injury.
Ike was also an expert horseman. But, of course, he was at West Point when we still had horse mounted cavalry. Every Army officer was expected to be able to ride but apparently Ike was better than most.
But then, I have pictures of my grandparents on horseback. I never thought it was that odd until I realized that we had horses for recreation, they had them for transportation.
There's also the football career of Byron White, the Supreme Court justice, which most people are familiar with. He was a major football star, but the wiki entry pointed out one really embarrassing stat:
He also holds a somewhat embarrassing NFL record: playing against the Los Angeles Rams, White took a snap and ran backwards 51 yards towards his own goal, trying (and failing) to weave his way around the L.A. defense, before finally fumbling at the 1-yard line, at which point the Rams recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. To this day, it is still the biggest loss of yardage on a single play in NFL history.
"My question would be when did this "higher education means absolutely nothing" crap began,.."
When the highly educated began swooning over monsters like Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Castro, etc. like a slutty high school girl over the quarterback with the fast car.
I saw shambolic as a reference to Shambala. Cali wanting to be paradise and all. And spending billions that they don't have is certainly the way to get to shambala.
Yes, and if Lonewacko weren't a sheep-fucker, he wouldn't fuck sheep.
LOL, thats actually pretty funny when you think about it!

The guy's a lawyer; lower your expectations.
I don't know the guy but if Will likes him my guess is that he will errudite and thoughtful and proceed to raise taxes through the roof to balance the budget to support 90% of what liberals want so that he can be called a centrist. I'm astounded by your lowered expectations, X.
If my expectations get much lower, you'll be seeing grainy photographs of me on MSNBC.
That's about what i'd expect from you, CN.

He has a Harvard law degree
This may not be much of a "plus" these days.
"He has a Harvard law degree

No kidding. Why does that mean he knows anything? He worked hard in school and is a good test taker. Big deal.
"They are totally dogmatic, narrowminded and completely unself aware."
I find it hard to believe that anyone that spends a good chunk of their time arguing on the internet could ever act in this manner.
I fight battles every day! On the internet!

Racist!
Seriously though, being educated in the Chicago school of economics is a good sign.

Yes.

Didn't Nixon warm the bench at Michigan?
No, I'm thinking of Gerald Ford.
Gerald Ford didn't warm the bench, IIRC -- he was a really good back.
Wikipedia as usual:

We're all fucking wrong. He was the star center and linebacker his senior year in 1934.

Look at that studly young stud.
Gerald Ford, our most athletic president? Probably. George Washington would be another good bet.
Ford was the only really high class athlete ever to hold the office of the President, although you can only count 20th Century ones since the idea of a college or professional athlete didn't exist before then. And his reward was Chevy Chase making him out to be a klutz.

Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar.
I say skip the "student of Friedman" and go straight to "son of Friedman": David Friedman for Governor.

Perhaps around the time that the Best and the Brightest really buckled down to bankrupting this country and destroying the Constitution.
Education alone is meaningless. I have an advanced degree and research experience in academia and have seen idiocy on par with that you see among the uneducated. You either are rational or you are not, it appears.
"Shambolic"?
Is this a word that people have used before? Does it mean that the state is a shambles, or that it is a sham?
Most teams called the MLB position (or one of the two LBs in a 6-2, the other being "fullback") "center" in those days. It was the position the snapper was expected to play on defense.

"Shambolic" means "disorderly or chaotic." And that is a pretty fucking apt adjective for my state government.
Warty, Subjunctive's a mood, not a tense.
I like to think "shambolic" means "shambling sham."
"My question would be when did this "higher education means absolutely nothing" crap began,.."
